Calling All Carbs!

Happy Friday everyone! I want to thank you guys so so much for all the get well wishes and tips for knocking out this cold! After a terrible night’s sleep (even after 2 benedryls), I woke up this morning feeling a bit Crypt Keeper-ish.

So needless to say, I called in dead sick to work. I hate having to use my time off hours for laying up around the house, but I just knew I wouldn’t be able to make it at the hospital today…not on a Friday…not with that (above) face!

One thing that I realized about being sick and living alone: no one to cook for you and empty out your trash bin full of used kleenex! I really wish Tiger had opposable thumbs…and could stand upright…dang! Guess he’ll just have to stick with being cute!

(Enter shameless kittie love photo!)

So my mission for the day was simple: continue trying to kick this cold’s butt, make a Heather-sized indention in my couch cushions, and dust-off the x-box for some Netflix lovin!

Check…check…CHECK!

When I’m sick I try my best to give my body exactly what it wants. Well, turns out all my body wanted today was CARBS, so carbs I had!

Blueberry Almond Oats with Decaf Green Tea

Blueberry Almond Oats: (serves 1)

  • 1 cup rolled oats (HEAB-sized serving)
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 banana, whipped in after oats begin to boil
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • a big ol’ handful of bloobs!

1. Cook oats in a medium-sized sauce pan over medium heat until thickened.
2. Stir in blueberries and top as desired (I topped my bowl with more blueberry goodness Β  Β  and a bit of vanilla almond granola for a little crunch!)

Creamy Turkey and Wild Rice Vegetable Soup
+
A Tropical Fruit Smoothie

Lunch compliments of Frio! I froze this soup back in late November and it made for the perfect get-well-lunch today! The smoothie was just a simple frozen fruit mix (steebies, mangoes, pineapples, and peaches) blended with almond milk & coconut milk in the bullet de magician.

Whole wheat bagel thin with sugar-free apple walnut butter + honey
3 clementines

Although I couldn’t convince Tiger to jump in on the meal preparations, I did get a little help from Annie for dinner!

Whole wheat white cheddar shells
+
peas and roasted kabocha
+
parmesan cheese
Annnnnnnd…

KETCHUP! πŸ™‚

Other than carbo loading for much of the day, I have easily drank my weight in decaf green tea, done some catching up on blog reading, and made it through season 2 of Secret Life of the American Teenager (my newest guilty pleasure) via Netflix.

I’m definitely feeling better than I did this morning. The cough seems to be going away, but my head still feels congested and heavy. I’m hoping that maybe with one more day’s rest I’ll be back to normal! No one wants to be sick all weekend! Plus, I eventually have to get my overdue library books back (I know, I’m such a rebel)!

What are you guys up to this weekend? Tell me something exciting!

You eat a very healthy and filling amount and don’t skimp out and you listen to your body! and you look awesomely healthy and beautiful! <3 ya! Hope ya feel better Heather!

  2. Oh girl, if I lived closer, I would SO come take care of you. I’m very much the mothering-care-taking sort, haha! Anyway, I’m glad you are feeling some better and I hope you continue to improve!

Tonight was pizza and a movie night which ended a bit ago when Christopher snuck off to the garage to finish working on a project for someone special (ME!). Tomorrow we are spending the day celebrating 6.5 years of being together, 3 year engagement anniv, and 2.5 years of marriage. Oh yeah, and Valentine’s Day too. πŸ˜‰

  3. Great job for listening to your body! Your body knows what it wants. Since you are fighting off a cold, your body is using up energy, and carbs=energy.

    Get better soon! πŸ˜€

Same thing… Getting over a cold & over-due library books. I am going to try out a recipe for some Poppyseed Apricot Raw Bars. YUM

I’m ill too- isn’t is awful? I wish my case were just a few sniffles and head congestions, but it’s a more severe- long term kind of sickness. Pooey for being sick. I wish I could eat soup and carbs with you, but unfortunately you live too far away.

Drink lots of carrot and orange juice! Ginger is supposed to help, too πŸ™‚

    • So I guess you still haven’t heard anything back from all the blood work, huh? I hope they get you fixed up real soon. That is just no way to live life!

Right about now, I wish I had a juicer! All the more reason I should come live with you…warm weather, soup eating buddy, fresh carrot juice…why have I not packed my bag?? πŸ˜‰

I did find some really tasty crystallized ginger at TJ’s that I’ve been snacking on with my tea! It’s so good and it helps to settle my stomach after meals.

  6. If I lived by you I totally would have made you some soup! Getchur rest on tomorrow and get BETTER, love! xo

  7. I hope you feel better! My body asks for carbs all day, every day, so that’s what I give it πŸ™‚ I’ve seen a few episodes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager and it was horrifying!! All those teenagers sleeping around- ugh! Although I love Jersey Shore, so it’s not really any different… πŸ™‚

Yummy looking foods! I am a green tea fan myself too, usually have a couple of cups a day. Do you like other herbal teas too? Hope you get well soon & have a nice relaxing weekend. Betty xxx

    • Thanks for stopping by Betty! I just checked out your blog…congrats on the weight loss! You look great!

I am pretty much in love with any and all herbal teas. I honestly don’t know how I’d make it through the winter without them!

  9. Hope you continue to feel better. It’s funny seeing that box of Annies – that is my go-to family dinner when I don’t feel like cooking anything impressive. We eat it with peas and broccoli. I’m feeling a little off too, hoping to take it easy today and nip it in the bud.

ps – I just want to love on your cat! Beautiful!

Here’s hoping a good night’s sleep helped you feel more like yourself. I hate being sick, and it seems I’ve been sick so many times this winter.

I don’t really have anything super exciting for you about my weekend. My husband is in Atlanta until Friday :(. I’ve got a lot of grading to do. The most exciting thing is picking up a bridesmaids dress and using my Barnes and Noble Groupon! πŸ™‚

    • Well, I did sleep better! Still stuffy though…hopefully after I throw down a Zyrtec, I’ll be able to breathe again! πŸ˜‰

Oh, I could spend all day in Barnes and Noble! I’ve never tried Groupon before…do you get some pretty good deals with it?

  13. Catherine says:

I feel for you! I’ve been sick all week with a sinus infection. Glad we had Thursday and Friday off, that’s for sure! Feel better soon, Heather! Love you!

  14. I hope you get better. How miserable to be sick especially on a weekend. πŸ™ There is something comforting and seemingly healing about carbs, isn’t there?

Your request for something exciting caught me off guard so I didn’t have time to make up a good story! I’m making split pea soup and delicious grilled bread for dinner since we are sick too. I’m making bread for Monday and a sweet treat of some kind. Tomorrow the guys are cooking for us girls since Valentine’s Day is Monday. I’m curious to see what they make…

    Get better my dear!

  15. inmytummy says:

Super sick over here as well! I’ve been fighting all the cravings and trying to load up on healthy fare, but after reading this I may give in- within reason of course :] I took a benadryl last night as well, but I still tossed and turned and coughed all night!

I wish I could tell you about some exciting adventures, but I’m just hangin’ out on the couch watching bad movies. Haha :]

  18. Erika says:

That is my kind of eats for sure. Lots and lots of carbs! <3
