Not Your Average Hummus

Wow! That’s all I know to say right now! I was a little hesitant last night to click “publish” but I’m so so glad that I did! I just finished reading through all of your comments and I can’t thank you all enough for the huge amount of support I feel right now! I love you guys SO much!

I think for now, I’m just gonna go with the flow and see where it goes….if I feel like posting every day one week and only a few days the next, so be it! Just know that I have absolutely NO intention on quitting blogging for a LONG time! I love it too much!

I have actually been excited all day today to get to this post tonight! I have a little something for you guys…

Disclaimer: Please continue reading this post with an open mind.

I made PB&J!

Wait…was that a little anticlimactic? Oh, I’m sorry. Let me try this…

I made PB&J HUMMUS!

Are you still there? I promise it’s absolutely delicious! Remember the disclaimer people!

It all started when I got a craving for one of my childhood favorites for dinner. It is practically impossible for me to sink my teeth into a PB&J without thoughts of bike riding, hide-n-seek, and Saturday morning cartoons. And while I’m totally not against indulging in childhood comfort food, a simple PB&J never really “sticks to my ribs” as my mama would say (Hi, Mom!).

So, how do you make a sandwich that’s filling for a five-year old work for a more grown-up sized hunger? You add beans!

Black Bean PB&J Hummus

Cranberry Bean PB&J Hummus*

*Don’t be lured into buying cranberry beans for a recipe thinking they are some sort of fancy new and exotic ingredient…they taste like plain.old.pintos! #imnotbitter #ihateyoufoodnetworkmagazine

PB&J Hummus:Β

  • 1 cup cooked beans
  • 3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons of your favorite jam or preserves
  • 1-2 tablespoons of water as needed to thin out mixture

Combine all ingredients into a food processor, Magic Bullet, or blender and give it a spin. You will have to stop a few times to scrape down the sides of your mixing vessel…hmm, I like that word…all of a sudden I feel like I’m making hummus on a submarine! πŸ˜‰

Made with my favorite brand of blueberry preserves from TJ Maxx.

You may remember from this post why I love these little jams so much!

Y.U.M!

Or maybe you’d like a little apricot preserves?

The combinations are pretty much limitless!

But wait just a minute…this isn’t JUST for sandwiches…

It also makes for a fantastic dip for apple slices!

They are totally loving their dip in the “hummus hot tub” πŸ˜‰

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous…

Oh yes. I did.

And it was incredible!

Hmm, what is the Tree of Life doing in my banana?

You know that’s a sign right? This stuff was MEANT to be in your life! πŸ˜‰

What is one food that when you eat it, you automatically think of your childhood?

  1. That’s not hummus without tahini πŸ˜‰

  2. Whoa! Girl, you are my kinda food crazy! πŸ˜‰

    And LMAO at the hashtags!

Banana slices always look like they have weird creepy faces to me, so the Tree of Life thing is way cooler! xoxo

  3. This made me love you just a little bit more! On top of everything else…you mentioned the tree of life! I love it. Biscuits make me think of my childhood. Especially sitting in the kitchen with my grandmother as she made them! That is my all time favorite food memory. I love my granny!

  4. Priyanka says:

It is so funny, I used to hate oatmeal as a kid. Back then my mum used to pester me and my brother to eat our bowl of porridge and now when I tell her I love my morning bowl of oats, she laughs.

  5. No way!!!! That is SO awesome!!! You make the best recipes!! πŸ˜€

I love the Tree of Life in your Banana!

  6. Emilia says:

Oh my goodness my friend, this looks SPECTACULAR! I think I could seriously eat the whole batch in one sitting πŸ˜‰ I’ve totally made hummus with nut butter before, but not in a sweet way with jam and such.
    SO. Bookmarking. This. Now.
I bet it would be good with a slice of honkin’ tempeh, and apple Ashley style πŸ˜‰

  7. janetha says:

dude. that banana slice TOTALLY looks like it has the tree!

  8. Missy says:

Wow- that was really quick to come up with “a blog worthy recipe”!!! And here we thought you were struggling to come up with new and exciting stuff πŸ˜‰
That looks so delish and creative! The combinations truly are endless. I have thought about trying different flavors of hummus/bean dips using different types of babyfood (quick, convenient and perfect size!) like butternut squash, sweet potatoes, etc but I am too lazy and tired at the end of the day! But I will have to be making these soon!

    • LOL!! I have to admit, I’ve been hoarding this one for a little while…I wanted to try making it with different beans before I posted it!

Hummus + baby food sounds genius! Take the lazy girl route: buy the hummus pre-made and just play around with the flavors!

  9. Did you ever know… that you’re… my herooooo… Seriously, you are a genius!! Definitely making this ASAP. I love a good PB&J, so I already know I’m going to love this!

I just got caught up on your last post where you talked about your blogging schedule. I often feel guilty for not coming up with new recipes all the time, especially because the name of my blog says COOKING, for Christ’s sake, but you have nothing to worry about! Don’t feel pressured to pump out a bunch of new recipes all the time- just keep posting this one over and over because it is genius πŸ™‚

  10. I’ve never even heard of cranberry beans?! Haha this hummus looks AMAZING though! I really want to try it!! And Bagel Bites remind me of childhood =P

  11. Lindsay says:

oh my goodness you’re a genius! I love the idea of sweet hummus. I tired making coconut before and it turned out…. ehhhhh, so-so. The idea of peanut-butter hummus is making me drool just thinking about it.

  12. carlee says:

Okay seriously! I’m trying every single one of these PB and J hummus concotions! They all look so intriguing and gooddd!

  13. Ellie says:

interesting recipe!! I trust your judgment. πŸ™‚ salty crackers like RITZ with jam make me think of childhood! along with a few other things.

  14. Ania says:

oh my YUM! your ideas are incredible πŸ˜€

and what makes me think of my childhood is rice with cinnamon and apple – unfortunately it’s not a good memory, I probably had it too often and I still don’t really like cinnamon.

  15. LOVE! I’ve never tried a “dessert hummus” even though they’re all the rage right now…but I know, I know! I need to. No excuses.
Hmmm…what makes me think of my childhood? Goulash. Random? Perhaps…but we had goulash every monday night! haha. That or frozen green peas. I still love them, though.

  16. NO YOU DID NOT JUST DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you are SO FREAKIN SMART AND GENIUS!!!

  17. No you didn’t! No way. Genius! Why didn’t I think of this??? Sheesh I gotta go make some!

  18. lindsay says:

the tree of life banana cracks me! too funny! this just means that its really enjoying your hot tub hummus, and uh….WHO WOULDN’T?? YUM!

  19. And….I love you.

PS. When I saw it on the sweet potato, I REALLY thought, “That’s my kind of girl!” Considering I made sweet potato nut butter a month or so ago, I’m now thinking I might need to add banana to that recipe…. πŸ™‚

  20. Lol about the hashtags and that hummus sounds awesome, maybe i’ll just skip the sweet potato though πŸ˜€

  21. yours might be a dangerous blog for me, I think I’ll be hungry just looking at the title πŸ™‚ hehe.

Hmmm sliced turkey makes me think of sandwiches as a kid!

  22. Amazing. There are no words. !!!!!

AND you used Smuckers Natural??? Done.

P.S. cracking up at the hashtags. I’m now starting to think in Twitter language, too! #kindofsad πŸ™‚

  23. Kayla says:

Um this is CRAZY! Haha, but very intriguing! I was going to make some sort of dessert hummus tonight, I don’t know if I’m brave enough to try this! Haha!

  24. elise says:

whoa. you are an amazingly daring and highly creative chef!

are those waffles in the background? or stacked bread? mmmm….carbs….

  25. LOL @ the #tags. Love it!!
This looks interesting, but I’m not sure I could do it!!! A little too adventurous for me πŸ™‚

  26. Michelle says:

Yum, yum, yum! I love this idea πŸ™‚

  27. Oooh look at you being all inventive! πŸ™‚

  28. Katherine says:
