What I Ate on National Fro-Yo Day

Did you catch the latest and GREATEST food holiday?

Well, besides Sunday being National Nutella Day…which I would have luvvvvved to celebrate, but being as the fact that I’m a recovered Nutella junkie, I’m pretty sure my sponsor would not have approved of me falling off the wagon so soon…

This past Monday was National FROZEN-YOGURT Day!

But before I even knew about what grand holiday celebrations awaited my taste buds (Thanks to my girlΒ LaRaeΒ and Instagram), I had to peel myself out of bed at 5am…ok, more like

5am…hit snooze,

5:15am…hit snooze again,

5:30am…hit snooze AGAIN,

WAIT!! Get up you moron! You have to leave the house in like 30 minutes!!

Pause to give thanks to our hostess with the mostest…Jenn of Peas & Crayons!
Of course, I definitely “Loved my veggies” before ending the night in great celebration…but that’s nothing new! πŸ˜‰Β

Obviously, breakfast was quick and on the go:

And also liquid…but I can think of 3 other beverages I’d rather start my day out with!

Well, besides maybe one of these…but hey, it’s a workday! πŸ˜‰

Since breakfast came so early, I had some much needed fuel mid-way through the morning:

One of my top favorite Chobani flavors…is it just me and my jacked-up sweet tooth (or lack thereof) or are some of the flavors almost too sweet? I’m actually thinking about mixing half a container with some plain yogurt in the future.

Since I had about 5.0009 minutes to throw a decent lunch together, I dug this little almost-forgotten-about gem out of the pantry:

No salt added…100% sustainable…AND 24 grams of protein? Sign me up!

It went perfectly atop my spinach salad with whatever random veggies I grabbed from the fridge + salsa and some nutritional yeast (because everything’s better with nooch!) πŸ˜‰

On my way to the gym after work, I munched on a red pear:

My favorite…always full of flavor.
No guessing like Bartlett’s and Green Anjous

When I got home, I walked into the kitchen to a nice surprise:

Ok, so I knew BB was going to be making dinner, but what I didn’t know was how fantastic the house would be smelling!

This is his I’m-so-excited-to-be-chopping-onions face.

He cracks me up!

While I got cleaned up, BB prepared a dinner of searedΒ scallops and grilled mahi-mahi with fresh, HOMEMADE mango salsa

Click the links above for the recipes he used.

My only contributions were cooking up the quinoa and suggesting we add avocado to the salsa since we didn’t have all the ingredients needed, plus, it’s always better when there’s more

COLOR!!!

As promised in a text earlier in that day…

After a little time to rest and digest, BB and I made a special trip all the way across town to the only fro-yo place that carries my favorite flavor:

TARO!!

I was totally going to go the fruit topping route, but as is the case on most occasions, I was tempted by the more indulgent confections: yogurt covered pretzel balls, white chocolate chips, almonds, and graham crackers!

I would have totally added one of my favorite cereals, but sadly, some little leprechauns had already raided the bin:

The insanity!!!!

Did you celebrate National Frozen Yogurt Day?

What is your favorite flavor/topping combination?

AWw mannnn I missed Frozen Yogurt Day! I’ll just make tomorrow the official one in my house! πŸ˜‰ You guys have the best toppings! The toppings we have here in Malaysia or Melbourne are mostly fruits and nuts- that’s it! boo:( someone need to show these people how it’s done!
I adore taro-flavoured stuff as well!!! πŸ˜€ GREAT EATS!

  2. I *wish* I could have celebrated national froyo day! Unfortunately, there’s no froyo in Sweden. Dare I say it’s even too cold for froyo right now? (it got down to zero fahrenheit)

  3. GAh wish we had cool froyo places near me!! my favorite topping is nuts!

  4. Tiff says:

I want to come home to freshly prepared dinner! Awesome. Actually, the entire post is nothing but awesome eats. Hmmm… kinda’ jealous.

  5. katie says:

    I sadly did not celebrate : p I wish I did though!

BB is a good man! Cooking dinner for you guys, he is a keeper! So happy for you love, you deserve a good man!

  6. I’m so sad that I didn’t know it was National Fro-Yo day….:-(

  7. Okay Heather. You are allowed to shame me because I only show up on WIAW. BUT I love your blog, as you know. So I’m going to put it in the special folder for “blogs I read daily” that way I don’t have to ask stupid questions like “who is that man?” and whatever else I decide to be ignorant about πŸ™‚
How did I miss that it was national froyo day? I seriously feel gypped. Perhaps it wasn’t happening in the UK?
Aw BB is a cutie and you’re so lucky to walk into a nice smelling house. And a BF that loves chopping onions? He’s a keeper πŸ˜‰
Taro froyo? That sounds like my cup of ….froyo. But how dare those little buggers filch all the marshmallows out of the lucky charms! If they were truly lucky, they would have magically regenerating marshies that kept coming back when greedy little fingers found their way around the cereal.
As for froyo flavours, I usually find most flavoured ones too sweet, (key word: usually) so I stick to plain and smother it with fruit!
    Best, Hannah

  8. Black cherry Chobani is my favourite too! Nothing is too sweet for my sweet tooth though. πŸ˜‰

I’m so bummed I missed National Fro Yo Day though! I’m definitely going to have to make up for it this weekend. Our store doesn’t have nearly as many cool toppings as yours though – I LOVE that yours has Lucky Charms! πŸ˜€ I usually roll with berries, coconut, and crushed Oreos for my toppings.

  9. Lee says:

There was a yogurt place near my office giving away free yogurt and I forgot about it! Boo.

  10. Peanut flour smoothies! Freaking awesome, peanut flour is a staple in my diet.

  11. Whaaattt? It’s national froyo day? I really wish I could get some right now, but there is no froyo place near by where I live πŸ™ Bummer!

All your eats look soo great!!

  12. I wish I had known it was national froyo day! Then I could have made bananner ice cream (as I can’t have dairy).

Where do you get your peanut flour?

  13. Betty says:

okay, so i have to ask.. what’s this nutritional yeast all about.. i’ve seen it a few places here and there, on diff blogs.. but what does it do? just flavor? any health benefits?

    • Nutritional yeast is “inactive” yeast…as opposed to the active dry stuff you use for baking. It is a great source of protein, and is used a lot in vegan recipes to make ‘cheesy’ sauces and such. The flavor is sort of like parmesan, or powdered cheddar cheese? Hard to explain, but it really is good!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, like Sarah said, it’s an “inactive yeast”…so you don’t have to worry about it being something that would go against…ahem, you’re lady parts. πŸ˜‰ Laugh all you want, but that is one of the FIRST things that came to my mind when I first started researching it. It is a really good source of protein (9 grams per 3 Tablespoon serving) and it’s LOADED with B-vitamins. I think Sarah described it well by comparing it to powdered cheddar cheese…there’s definitely a cheesy taste to it with maybe a little nutty aftertaste. The first time I tried it, I just sprinkled it on top of some steamed broccoli and…YUCK! I hated it! But then, after mixing it in sauces (and it’s really good in hummus too), I started to develop more of a taste for it and now I absolutely LOVE it! You can find it in the bulk section at Whole Foods, but Bragg’s also makes some that you can find in regular grocery stores.

  14. Taro was always my favorite flavor, too. πŸ™‚ But seriously? How could they not put more marshmallows out??? Lucky Charms without marshmallows are just…lucky?

  15. Jessica says:

I was so out of the loop on the whole National Fro-yo day thing! So bummed I missed it!

  16. I totally missed Nat’l Fro Yo Day. Soooooo bummed!

  17. I just shed a tear for my not being able to have fro yo anymore…so sad. You two crack me up! A man that will cut onions for your meal is a keeper for sure! Sounds like you had a delicious day!

  18. Oh I can’t believe I missed national Froyo day…AND National Nutella day? How will my world go on?

And I can’t believe someone stole all of the marshmellows from the lucky charms! Oh…people

  19. so every time i pass a fro-yo place i seriously think of you. i want to get some so bad, but can never convince the boy!! why is mine not as willing as yours!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

What?! What is wrong with him? Just get him to go in a try a sample or two…nudge him close to the “junk food” toppings…surely that’ll bring out the ice-cream loving kid in him! πŸ˜‰

  20. i am so sad that i missed national fro-yo day. i’ll have to make up for missing it soon! πŸ™‚
