WIAW: The Birthday Edition

Hey, hey puddin’ pies!

I hope you are all having a great week so far! I’ve been super excited for this week’s edition of What I Ate Wednesday becaaaaaaaause…

It’s time to share the deliciousness that was my
BIRTHDAY WEEKEND! πŸ˜€

After taking a stroll with me down birthday memory lane, be sure to head over to
Peas & Crayons and check out all the other yum-tastic link ups!

It all started Thursday night with a trip to one of my favorite local eateries here in Clarksville, the Blackhorse Pub & Brewery where I introduced my man friend to better- than-pepperoni pizza…

Along with the so-not-optional order of beer cheese dip, he ordered the multigrain garlic crust pizza with ham, spinach, gouda, and mozzarella (I have to say, the boy has good taste) and I picked the black and bleu flatbread: prime rib, bleu cheese, spinach, onions, mozzarella and tomatoes drizzled with a balsamic glaze…BEYOND amazing!

On Friday, I already showed you guys the Almond Cookie Protein Pancakes that went down for breakfast lunch the meal I ate when I ended up waking up at noon, but what they heck, totally worth another look, right?

Pure, unadulterated pancake porn right there, folks! πŸ˜‰

For dinner that night, I went with my parents to my mom’s office Christmas party (two birds, one stone…nice work mom!) at McNamara’s Irish Pub in Nashville. All inclusive dinner including appetizer and dessert with one free drink…sign me UP!

We started with some fresh kettle chips and the most amazing french onion/spinach/HEAVEN dip I’ve ever tasted and I ordered a glass of their
hard cider which was fabulous!

For our appetizer, we got a couple of plates of Corn Beef Bites and Scotch Eggs for the table.

Oh my god, have you ever had Scotch Eggs? If you haven’t, your world is not yet complete…hardboiled eggs wrapped in sage-infused sausage, breaded and deep-fried and served with spicy mustard that I wanted to sneak into my purse!

At this point, I was already full, but hey…you only get free Irish food turn 28 once! πŸ˜‰

I ordered the lamb medallions (which was just ok) and the roasted carrots and parsnips, but the sweet braised cabbage seriously stole the show!

And then by some act of God, I managed to squeeze in a couple of bites of their famous bread pudding with whiskey river sauceΒ before my parents and I practically ROLLED ourselves out of the restaurant!

I may have felt like I was going to explode, complained halfway home, and popped a handful of antacids, but it was TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Needless to say I didn’t have much of an appetite the next day, but when the man friend and I met up Saturday night and there was mention of Memphis style barbecue, let’s just say there was no arm twisting involved!

My first everΒ dry rub ribs (I’m so not messing with BBQ sauce anymore), perfectly-seasoned buttery collard greens, and some tasted-like-they-were-from-a-bag-I-only-had-two fried okraΒ (can’t win ’em all), and a spicy corn muffin from Corky’s.

And what better to round out a weekend of carnivorous delicious eats than with Sunday’s Meatless Monday recipe…

Curried-Quinoa Stuffed Acorn Squash

Let’s just say it felt good to have something light and fresh after three days of indulgence…but if I had it to do all over again…I wouldn’t change a thingΒ would have ordered five plates of Scotch Eggs! πŸ˜‰

What did YOU eat this weekend?

  3. Happy Belated Birthday, Heather!! You’re tempting me with pizza (although I had some over the weekend too πŸ˜‰ ) But the acorn squash looks incredible. I’ve never tried using acorn squash. I does look tasty…must find some and roas those babies up! Have a great WIAW!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you Fran! Believe it or not, this was my very FIRST time with acorn squash…and now I’m totally addicted! I have so many more ideas for “stuffing” that I want to try!

  4. Farrah says:

Oh wow, everything looks so good!! Sounds like the perfect weekend!

  5. Happy belated birthday girl!

And holy WOW – everything looks amazing, it must have been a great birthday! πŸ˜‰

  6. Oh man, those are some serious yummy lookin Irish treats! Happy Birthday by the way!

  7. Definitely some amazing birthday eats! I’ve never had scotch eggs, I may have to look for them next time I hit up an Irish pub!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, you must…LIFE CHANGING! These were so full of sage flavor too…I was just sad I only got one half! πŸ™ Lol

  8. Oh my gosh everything you ate looks amazing!!! What a perfect way to celebrate your birthday!!! I hope this is a fantastic year for you, darling!

  9. These are some amazing birthday eats – especially that pizza! I’ve never tried prime rib on a pizza before but something tells me it would be nothing short of heavenly!

I don’t think I’ve ever had dry rub ribs before, but you say they’re better than ones with BBQ sauce? I’ve got to try that!

Hmm the best thing I ate this weekend was mushroom and bacon stuffed pork tenderloin!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yes, ab-so-LUTE heaven…especially with the sweet balsamic glaze! I was in my happy place for sure! Haha! And I really do think dry ribs are the way to go now…I think the smoky flavor of the actual meat can get lost in all that sugary barbecue sauce, plus it can be such a mess!

Mmm, you had me a bacon! πŸ˜€

  10. Well congratulations on a successful birthday! All of that food looks divine, especially that bread pudding, mmm… Oh, and thanks for the little comment spree over at HIE! I loved reading them all! I don’t think I’ll have time to respond to all of them, but they sure did brighten my day!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, if it brightened your day, that’s ALL that matters! I’m just glad I was FINALLY able to get caught up! I’ve missed you! xoxo

  11. Sounds like a great birthday weekend! Those pizzas look ginormous for just two, but oh so good πŸ™‚ And I just love all the pictures of your pancakes. So thick!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh we DEFINITELY had leftovers! And the boy’s pizza was a MEDIUM! I was like, holy crap! Haha!

And you’ve just got to have thick and fluffy pancakes as far as I’m concerned…no thin crepe-like impersonators over here! πŸ˜‰

  12. Happy Birthday!!! Those pancakes look incredible- Better than any bday cake:)

  13. Mmmmm, so much yum! Pizza n’ beer is my go-to birthday dinner.

  14. Looks like you had a great birthday! I really like that you and I seem to share omnivorous tendencies–lots and lots of veggies to the point that maybe you are vegetarian, but then, lamb/sausage/ribs sound yummy, so fine, eat some meat!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Exactly! I honestly don’t even realize when I go days without eating meat unless I stop to think about it…or when yet another person asks me if I’m vegetarian! Haha! The world is just full of too many yummy things to limit myself!

  15. Kat says:

Girl you sure do know how to celebrate!! My bday is on valentines day, so we try to avoid going out on that day since every couple in the universe is out, but we try to rig something up on the weekend or the day before. Hubby says he has plans for me this year, so Im a little nervous!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, I can see how you’d want to steer clear of the masses, but YAY for surprises! Any ideas what the hubs has planned? πŸ™‚

  16. That sounds like the perfect birthday-food-day! Gosh, the Pizza looks SO delicious, reminds me, that I need to go out and order one soon. But I am still a fan of your homemade stuff, dou you think you could be hired as a private cook in Switzerland one day? πŸ™‚ Happy Wednesday girl! The Blogger grandma (34) πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Blogger grandma? Puh-leeeeease! You’re too hot to be considered anything close to grandma material! πŸ˜‰ And I would TOTALLY take you up on the private cook offer…just let me get a passport first! Haha!

  17. Oh wow, so much goodness on your birthday weekend, I’m loving it! The pizzas look great and I don’t even like pizza that much. I cannnottttt wait for the pancake recipe on Sunday.. love the photos. & I’ve never had a beer cheese dip before but I feel like that would be very interesting indeed. Must try *mental note*

  18. Man friend?! I need details!

Scotch eggs do indeed rock. Now I’m craving them, thankyouverymuch.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ok, just give me until after this weekend to get more of a feel for things…we’re going to my first ever ugly Christmas sweater party! πŸ˜€

  19. Happy Belated Birthday!!!! Sorry I missed it! Those pancakes look DIVINE!

  20. OMG, pizza and pancakes? You’re a girl after my own heart….

    Happy birthday!

  21. Happy belated Birthday, Heather!

While birthdays obviously aren’t all about the food even if they were you’d have had a pretty rocking one! Now I should have really mailed you some of those Speculoos Chocolate Cups …

  22. We all love a bit of pancake porn.

Looks like you had some really yummy birthday eats.

Hope you had an awesome birthday.

  23. Jeeeeez Heather. I can’t pick a fave. This all looks awesome. Also a great reminder that I haven’t had lunch yet πŸ˜‰

    Happy Belated Birthday!

  24. Happy belated birthday!!! πŸ™‚

  25. It sounds like you had some amazing meals for your bday!! I want you to make me pancakes on my birthday! πŸ˜‰ I’m so glad you had a great time girl! Happy Birthday….again!

  26. all your eats look delicious! happy birthday!

  27. On Saturday night I made a grilled tofu steak topped with mushroom gravy and served over garlic mashed potatoes that was pretty freaking incredible!! Other than that, it was a little tame for us, nothing too extravagant. πŸ™‚ I’m so glad you had such a fabulous birthday!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmm, mushroom gravy! Made with your mushroom stock? I still need to get on that…oh so many recipes to try, so little time! Wish I could just stay home all day and cook! πŸ˜‰

  28. Melissa says:

OMG – I love McNamara’s! I actually live not too far from there in Hermitage, but have never tried their scotch eggs…I will have to do that immediately πŸ™‚ lol and happy belated birthday!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, you have too…they are SO good! I’m already planning on taking a friend of mine out there JUST so I can get them again! Haha!

Thanks for the birthday wishes! πŸ™‚

  29. I’ve never heard of Scotch eggs. Sounds interesting! I enjoyed a flatbread pizza this past weekend too! I am usually pretty boring when it comes to ordering while out and stick with a salad or sandwich. This time I stepped out of my box and ordered a pizza with gorgonzola, pears, basil and a balsamic glaze. It was pretty tasty!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow, that DOES sound good! I’m really not much of a fan of blue cheeses, but if done right (like in the flatbread I ordered…and probably in yours too) I can appreciate the flavor. If it’s not paired with something sweet, I just can’t handle the taste!

  30. Happy Birthday!
I see scotch eggs on Top Chef all the time and have wondered if they were really good…question.answered!

  31. Happy (late) birthday! All of the food in this post looks and sounds sooooo good – especially that multigrain pizza crust?!? Count me in! πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Olivia! Yes, they’re multigrain crust is to die for…not dense or tough in the least bit! One of the MANY reasons I love the place so much!

  32. Cait says:

Those are some gorgeous pancakes. Happy late birthday!

  33. So…the food looks amazing. But what is this about a man friend?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, so you caught that did ya? πŸ˜‰ Like I told Laura, details to come (to a select few) AFTER this weekend since we have plans again…we’re going to my first ugly Christmas sweater party! πŸ˜€

  34. purelytwins says:

pancake porn – love it!!! your pancake stacks always look so perfect!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks girls! That really means a lot to me coming from you two…I was totally drooling all over my phone with the pic of your latest raw dessert! Can’t wait to see the details! πŸ™‚

  35. I don’t think my bday eats have ever been that magical =) hope you had a fantastic bday week and a rockin wiaw lovah! miss you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. I saw the scotch eggs when scrolling through on my phone and thought – wow, there is a place just like McNamara’s in Clarksville. We actually live 2 minutes away from that pub and I can never get enough of their veggies. If you ever go back, definitely try the veggie plate – it’s heaven! We go to Blackhorse a lot when we visit my family there – my cousin actually works there. I don’t think I have had a bad meal there yet! So glad you had a great birthday!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, too funny! I will DEFINITELY be going back…and it looks like I’m ordering the veggie plate! Hey, maybe you could be my date? πŸ˜‰
