The Healing Power of Yolkporn

Hallow!

For the record, I’m saying that in my best Labryinth worm accent! πŸ˜‰

Ok, since it’s NOT Wednesday, I feel I should give you guys some sort of warning before proceeding any further with this post…if you are hungry, you will probably want to gnaw your arm off before you get to the end. So yeah, maybe grab a snack first? Don’t worry, I’ll wait!

Ok, got it? Good! Let’s go!

So you know how they say a picture is worth 1000 words? Well, today I have about 40 bajillion for ya…yeah, let’s just gloss over the fact that I’m really bad at math. Like I mentioned yesterday, last week was pretty rough, but instead of trying to explain EVERYTHING, I’ll let the pictures help me out a bit!

It all started on Sunday with the opening of this little “gem”…

Grail Mix TJ Maxx

A TJ Maxx find called “Grail Mix“…a combination of pure unadulterated crack peanut butter granola, butter toasted peanuts (?!), raw nuts, dried cranberries, and raisins.

Now take that picture, subtract the nap I was SUPPOSED to take before work, add in a heavy dose of frustration and anxiety over the next several hours, and then multiply that handful by like 40 katrillion!

And the next few days looked like this…

Peanut Flour + Pumpkin + Trail Mix

Pumpkin puree mixed with peanut flour and topped with a whole lot more grail mix than is seen in this picture.

Ice Cream + Peanut Butter Dots Cereal

Crumbled Greek yogurt bar (x2) topped with peanut butter cereal

Trail Mix Bowl

Peanut flour mixed with pumpkin topped with homemade trail mix, cereal, and crumbled pretzel slims.

Greek Yogurt + Cereal + Grail Mix

Greek yogurt topped with cereal and grail mix

Monster Trail Mix

Somewhere around this point, I just quit trying to pretend that I was only going to eat what I served myself in a bowl and began eating straight out of boxes and bags.

Peanut Butter Dots Cereal

This box, that I was so excited about finding at Food Lion that I hoarded it for MONTHS, made it a whopping three days.

Tea & Calcium Chocolate

But then, later in the week while sipping on some tea, I got served up a healthy dose of enlightenment…

Tea Fortune

How did Yogi know?! 😯

And the next few days looked like this…

Bok Choy + Egg + Mushroom Quesadilla

Burrata, onion, and mushroom quesadilla with a side of steamed bok choy and a sunny side up egg

Quesadilla Egg Dip

Which quickly became a dipper for the aforementioned quesadilla! πŸ˜‰

Eggs + Pumpkin + Burata Cheese + Bok Choy

Steamed bok choy, pumpkin puree seasoned with TJ’s 21 salute seasoning, burrata cheese, and a DOUBLE YOLK!

BBQ Sweet Potato & Eggs

Baked sweet potato topped with peanut flour, FROG jam, and BBQ seasoning (my favorite #strangebutgood combo) with a side of ANOTHER double yolk!

Yolkporn

Also known as the healing power of yolkporn! πŸ˜‰

And why do I call it “healing”? Well, because I had gotten to a point where I was seriously starting to fear certain foods again. In an effort to “allow myself what I wanted”, I found myself stuck in a FOOD RUT and just could not seem to find my way out. All of a sudden, that tasty trail mix had gained power over me. But, rather than keep all that shame to myself, I took a lesson from my latest read and shared my struggle with my closest and most trusted friend. And one thing she said stuck with me most:

“When you’re tired, hungry and frustrated, sugar carbs are the most comforting. They taste good, they sound good. BUT sometimes you just have to over-ride that. You have to tell yourself, ‘Heather, you can have that stuff after you take a step back and have a healthy portion of protein.'”

I knew this, but to hear it from someone else, someone who can see things from the outside, it was the slap in the face pat on the back that I needed. Once I started incorporating more savory meals, I felt the balance coming back. And guess what! Yesterday, I had THIS for breakfast…

Cottage Cheese + Pumpkin + Grail MixCottage cheese, pumpkin puree, with a DECENT sized portion of cereal and “grail” mix

After I finished the bowl licked the bowl clean, I put it in the sink and walked out of the kitchen feeling PERFECTLY satisfied! And with that, I’m back to normal…again! πŸ˜€

  1. I love that line from your friend! Lately I’ve been eating a lot of chocolate. I’m not normally a chocolate person so this is kind of out of the norm for me. But I’ve been allowing myself to eat what I want and just compensate in other ways. So yesterday when I was stress eating I got a salad for dinner and then allowed myself to eat that chocolate. And guess what? I was full. I stopped. I was satisfied. I didn’t feel bad. I ate what I wanted, a bit of chocolate with a hefty bowl of veggies. And I honestly patted myself on the back for finding some balance! Love reading about your journey twinnie! It totally resonates with me <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“And I honestly patted myself on the back for finding some balance!” <- Ahhhh, I'm seriously clapping my hands together for you right now! I went through a little chocolate phase myself a couple of months ago which was so weird because I NEVER go for chocolate, but I still remember having one simple chocolate chip cookie one night at work and feeling so satisfied from it...that sense of satisfaction after a meal, when I feel no need whatsoever to take random bites of anything else? I feel like that is one of the BEST feelings! Like ding ding ding, I got it right! πŸ˜€ Lol

  2. i’m always here for you babe, too, but thanks for sharing this <3 all of your meals look so amazing! thank goodness i had my breakfast beside me while i read this! πŸ™‚ hehe it had yolk porn too πŸ˜‰

  3. Your pictures always make me so hungry! I’m glad I was already planning to get up and make some microwave oatmeal for breakfast. Sometimes food rut’s are hard. Cold cereal is probably one of the hardest foods for me to control myself around. I like the taste of it but since it never really satisfies my hunger I will eat through way to much before I realize I just need to eat something else.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, same here! I can’t believe I used to eat cold cereal every day for breakfast when I was younger…it does absolutely nothing for my hunger now…unless I have just the right amount of protein to go along with it I usually just keep it as a snack. What’s funny is that I hated eating oatmeal back then, but now it’s one of my favorites and much more filling!

  4. Fran@BCDC says:

I need to go to T.J. Maxx more often! The egg/quesadilla combo looks delicious! Have a great day, Heather!

  5. Marina says:

Your food looks delicious! Can I eat it all right through the screen? : D actually very interesting to read about your deliverance from certain food habits … I’m like a secret fan – for quite some time enjoying your blog)) I hope your day will be great;)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh heavens! If ONLY we could reach through our screens, right? Unfortunately Pinterest would make us all big as houses if that were the case! Lol Thank you so much, Marina for sharing your secret-ness! It makes my day to see comments from “new” readers! πŸ˜€

  6. Oh, how I love the Labyrinth worm. He’s such a cute li’l guy. Actually, I love that entire movie and I’m really glad that you just made a reference to it. Amazing. Aaaaaand now I’m gonna have the Magic Dance stuck in my head all day. Great.

It’s really, really hard to get out of a food rut, especially one that feels controlling and powerful. I love the idea that just switching things up can help fix that.

Can I tell you a secret? I’m actually kind of weird about eggs… The texture of them (esp. scrambled) freaks me out. I haven’t had an egg in years, yolky or otherwise. SAVE ME FROM MY EGGLESS PRISON.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ok, so I can kinda understand the whole texture thing of scrambled eggs…especially if they’re overcooked (hello plate of crumbled up sponge!), but we need to get you on the yolk train STAT! There is nothing better than the rich buttery taste of a sunny side up (or over medium) egg…nothing! Oh my little eggless inmate, do I need to come all the way to California just to cook you up a plate? πŸ˜‰

PS, I love that you love the Labyrinth! I wasn’t sure if too many people would know what I was talking about!

  7. Lucie says:

Totally feel you on this, lady. I am an expert in powerful foodruts. Especially WHITE BREAD – it’s the worst, I swear! I never have it at home, I can not handle it.
You know what helps me when I sit in front of the fridge and want to eat emotional? GO to your calmest place in your flat, lay on your back and lay your downsides of feet together (like a frog, you know?) – this Yoga pose takes me to peace BIG time. My trainer said, it’s because the energy can flow evenly again. It’s so good especially when you have a bloated belly from all the sugar πŸ™‚
My first meal out of a food root is a omelette!! Eggs are healing, STAT!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow, thank you Lucie! I will definitely be using that! I’ve been working to get my range of motion back in my knee (hence all the foam rolling recently) and I think I have finally gotten to a point where I can actually get into that pose. After a few more weeks, I’m really hoping to be able to get back into my favorite yoga class at the gym…just have to work on getting into child’s pose now! <- I never realized that would be so hard to do after surgery!

  8. ….so I’m eating eggs for lunch. Yup, that needs to happen.
And that’s definitely good advice! Sometimes when we need to stuff our face full of chocolate…we need some veggies/protein first…and then go for the chocolate πŸ˜‰

  9. That cereal looks SO good! Also, I now have a major craving for a baked sweet potato topped with BBQ sauce!! πŸ˜‰

  10. Katie says:

sooooo needed this! i’ve been stuck in a sugar rut lately, too. you always seem to be one step ahead of me, and thank God for that because you always have the answer first πŸ˜‰
needless to say, i’ll be having eggs for lunch.
thanks for a much needed pick-me-up!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

No Katie, thank YOU! This is the only thing that motivates me to open up about my struggles on the blog…to reach out to others who may be in the same place. Hope those eggs did you good! πŸ˜€

  11. I feel ya on the food rut! When I find myself eating the same sweet stuff over and over, I just whip up some delicious savory protein and/or carbs – usually eggs or chicken sausage or savory sweet potatoes – and BAM! back to normal. Works like a charm!

  12. I love that you put it in picture progression.
Your raw honesty is beautiful and freeing.
    Love you!

  13. Purelytwins says:

we love our yolks πŸ™‚ the best part!
we go through food ruts, we try to change things up when we feel we are feeling stuck. we try to buy something different which makes us eat something different haha

  14. Kat says:

Oh TJ’s….that place is like a secret heaven. I ALWAYS and I literally mean ALWAYS find some unique food there. Lurve that place!!
Im also loving the amount of nut fats in this post! Have some peanut butter there girl πŸ™‚
And you’ve got some mad yolk porn skills there my friend. Sometimes I can pull it off, but I find that I’m typically too concerned about eating to care what my yolk ends up looking like. BAHAHA. I’m just like “get in my belly!!”

  15. I wish I hadn’t read this food porn. I want balls. I mean huevos. I mean anything but asparagus.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Or as Gigi pointed out, egg BOOBS! And of course, the immature 12 year old in me is now giggling at the thought of egg boobs and asparagus TOGETHER! πŸ˜‰

  16. You’re such a pro at fixing your intuitive eating slip ups and getting out of your ruts these days – it’s awesome and I’m so proud of you! πŸ˜€ When I get in a food rut I turn to Pinterest and make a plan to try out at least a couple new recipes that week. That always helps to spice things up for me!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I definitely don’t feel like a pro, but thank you so much, Chelsea! Pinterest scouting is definitely something I need to start doing…but instead I just keep pinning away and forgetting all the recipes I want to make! Hmmm, I think I hear a New Year’s resolution coming on? πŸ˜‰

  17. Sarah Pie says:

I’m glad to hear you were able to get yourself out of your rut with a little help from a friend… and some tea (which always makes everything better). I used to have a REALLY hard time with cereal in college (we’re talking a whole box gone in a day during finals week kind of problem) so I feel you on it’s addictive power.

Nothing that a few good double yolk’s can’t turn around though πŸ™‚

  18. That peanut butter dots cereal OMG! And that homemade trail mix, I couldn’t stop myself eating it all πŸ˜‰

I have definitely got myself out of a breakfast rut since doing Meg’s breakfast challenge this month and last month to force myself to eat something different each day. After this challenge I may do it for dinners too as I’ve found myself in a rut with those lately too and need to expand what I cook and not just make the same thing over and over.

    Mmm yolk porn!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I think Meg’s challenge is a great idea and I commend each and every person who is participating…it takes dedication to not fall into a quick and comfortable groove when you first wake up! And I love how many different recipes you’ve tried!

  19. The double yolks were your salvation! How about that? Go play the lotto stat!!

I just went cold turkey on my sugar fix and by cold turkey I mean I cut cookies, cakes, candy, chocolate…that type of thing. I had some jam on toast, fruit, granola and even a glass of wine, but I don’t count those things. Phft.

By the way, great, great, great job working yourself out of a foodie meltdown. You saw it, you fixed it, and you moved past it. That’s huge my friend!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks girlie! I only hope that in time, I can save myself from actually having to have a breakdown to see what needs to be done…yep, check this one off of the lessons learned/experiences gained list! πŸ™‚

PS, ever stopped to think about where the term “cold turkey” came from? Ahhhh, as in little to no preparation…a COLD turkey! Thanks Google! Yes, I’m a dork!

  20. I don’t bat for the other team or anything but…….. I cannot resist a good set of egg boobs! LOL!!!!!

And why why why does TJ Maxx always have the WEIRDEST but BEST food products?!?!?! UHHH MAZING! I haven’t wandered that store in awhile, I think I might have to do that tomorrow!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Egg boobs! Omg, love it! And totally, the Maxx man and I have a bit of a love/hate relationship…love it when I find amazing foodie items but HATE it when I can never find them again!

  21. Jodie says:

    Breakfast ruts….oats, granola, cereal…carbs carbs carbs…

    Now I want eggs!!

  22. Pingback: What I Ate ‘Round the Clock |

  23. OK, should have read this post before I told you about sweet potatoes and eggs. Guess you already figured THAT out. πŸ˜‰

My first thought upon seeing that Grail Mix was “MUST HAVE THAT,” but I know I would have done the exact same thing. The way you say, “I finally gave up and just ate from boxes and bags”? Oh girl…how many times do I find myself standing in the kitchen, neatly pouring things out, and then say, “Just a little more…” and one fingerful becomes a handful becomes FIVE?

But no guilt. Just a reset. Right?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Right! You just gotta get up, dust yourself off, and try again…oh, and cue Aaliyah! πŸ˜‰ But seriously, it’s all about forgiveness and patience with yourself…though I’ll be the first to admit sometimes that’s easier said than done.

PS, Puhlease, I’ve been on top of this egg sweet potato thing for EVAH! You’ve seriously got to try this combo though. I know you’d love it!

  24. I’m sorry to hear you had a rough time which involved having to resort to addictive goodness. I was actually having a convo with Amy the other day about how for me personally, protein does jack all for my hunger- I need fats to feel satisfied or I just scrounge around all day. Its great to see that you understand that for you, you need that nutrient to add satiety for you! Food should never have that control over us or make us be fearful of it- its a learning curve and with each setback, it only makes you stronger πŸ™‚

As silly as this sounds, I often find actually SAYING something out loud instead of reading it makes it more of an affirmation and more cemented… thus likely to follow through.

To get out of a food rut, I simply ban myself from hitting the grocery store. It means having to make do with what I do have and be creative!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Love that with the food rut! I definitely need to start doing that if only to just carve a dent in my overstocked pantry! It’s beginning to get has GOTTEN nuts! Lol

But seriously, thank you for your empathy and supportive words Arman. It means a lot to me to know that I have friends out there who can relate to my troubles. πŸ™‚

mmm I LOVE that cereal, it’s my absolute favorite. Do you know the nutrition facts of it, by any chance? Specifically the sodium content? Just curious!
