Midnight Cravings

Hello loves!

I seriously canNOT believe this is the last WIAW post for the year of 2011! Where did the time go?? I still can’t even believe that I turned 27 on my last birthday…although the 3 gray hairs that I’ve plucked in the last 3 weeks have served as a cruel reminder…

*grumble*

Anywho! Get out your noise makers and party hats…it’s time to go out in style..

Foodie style that is!

Be sure to stop by Peas & Crayons and thank Jenn for such an amazing job hosting WIAW each week in 2011 and gear up for even more delicious link-ups in the new year! If you have a blog and you haven’t joined in on the fun, please PLEASE check out the “how-to” on P&C. It’s so much fun to get new ideas for meals and snacks and/or just sit in front of your computer and drool over everyone’s food (if you happen to be a total food nerd like me anyway)!

Like I mentioned in my Christmas post, I worked the night shift on Christmas night so this is my “24 hour WIAW”

1am is dinnertime on the night shift and the hospital cafeteria was kind enough to give us a complimentary meal for the night…I only wish they had been kind enough to put a little flavor into the food.

The green beans were terrible and the turkey tasted like something out of a microwave meal, but I was totally craving those mashed potatoes once I caught a whiff of them in the cafeteria and had no problem putting away that and the roll slathered in gravy!

Mmmm, carbs!

Around 3am, I needed a little pick-me-up so I helped myself to two little treats from a co-worker (my favorite holiday treat I might add…BUCKEYES) and I also had a cup of unpictured black coffee.

Hit.the.spot!

And I rode the caffeine/sugar high all the way to the end of my shift at 7am! πŸ™‚

After I got off work, I decided to run to the grocery store and pick up some eggs because I thought I was out. And then somehow I found myself in the middle of the “Post Christmas” sale aisle!

Only I can go to the store for eggs and come out with eggs, coconut milk ice cream, and an electric griddle!

In my defense, I had a FREE coupon a So Delicious product (thanks to Jenn’s giveaway a few months ago) and c’mon, just look at the price of that griddle! How could I, a self-proclaimed pancake queen walk away from that??

Back at the house, I discovered that I DID in fact still have 1/2 a carton of eggs. I blame my fuzzy memory on lack of sleep…and yeah, I’m pretty sure some of my brain cells have been plucked along with those gray hairs.

So then, I get this massive craving for French toast…and if there’s one thing I’ve come to realize while working night shifts, it’s that you don’t deny yourself a craving…because you simply don’t have the brain capacity to fight it! πŸ˜‰

8:30am: 2 egg French toast, bananas, and
peanut flour sauce (2 tbsp peanut flour + 2 tbsp almond milk + 1 tbsp maple syrup)

After I practically licked my plate clean…wait, I did lick my plate clean…I was out like a light for solid 4 hours. May not sound like much but I had to get back on schedule to work days again for the rest of the week.

I woke up feeling a bit zombie-like, but it was nothing that a good cardio sesh couldn’t cure

Thank God for elliptical programs…no thinking required…just sweating!

After a good workout I almost always crave veggies. Luckily I had stuff to put together a little salad that went perfectly with leftover bean and beef enchiladas that I made on Friday.

2pm
Enchilada topped with sharp cheddar and black olives.
Salad topped with Naturally Fresh ranch dressing.

Mmmm!

And I enjoyed it alongside a 1/2 bottle of Sweet Leaf iced tea. I’ve seen this on Christin’s blog before, but this was my first time trying it (couldn’t pass up a 59 cent bottle of tea!)

And the verdict?

Soooo good! Perfectly sweet with a subtle lemon flavor!

My last meal of the day before passing out around 9pm…one can only hang on for so long without coffee…came around 5pm and wasn’t really a meal at all, but that was A-ok with me because there was a particular Christmas leftover in the fridge calling my name:

The last of Evan’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Dessert Hummus with a nice big, juicy Honeycrisp apple

I swear, you guys, this stuff is seriously addicting…make it now!

And you know, since my “meal” wasn’t sweet enough, I had to end it on a SUPER sweet note:

All I can say is, it’s a good thing I only had ONE of these in my possession! πŸ˜‰

What’s the last craving you had? Did you go for it?

pps my cravings in south america were chocolate chocolate chocolate chocolate (pms much?) and i gave in following fodmaps and im happy to say my stomach actually handled small amounts of dairy in limited amounts provided the rest of the meals around it werent full of fodmaps and such. im really getting a hang of this way of eating and im LOVING how much more its opening up for me!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

That’s awesome Elise! So glad to hear the fodmaps is working so well for you! I don’t really know what I’ve done differently lately, but my tummy issues haven’t been a problem in at least a few weeks…score! Now, I just need to separate myself from the holiday cookies before I develop diabetes! Haha!

Confession: I totally swiped the pumpkin spice chocolate square from a candy basket at work…I haven’t even seen them in the store once…probably a good thing though!

Good luck with your night shifts! And I’m so glad you enjoyed my little story! Happy New Year to you and Kyle!

  5. It didn’t look like the most flavorful meal either – but the rest of your eats looks delicious! Can’t believe it’s almost 2012!

  6. Looks like a tasty 24 hours! I always give in to cravings. Life’s too short not to! I need to try that dip. I keep forgetting about it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Do ittttttt! But proceed with caution…I swear I can only make it every once in a while…I will eat the whole batch in 2 or 3 sittings! Haha!

  7. Girlfriend, all of your eats are delicious! You crave veggies after a workout, too?! I love it. Too bad I’ve worked at uh, twice (cheeks blushing) in two weeks. I gotsta get back on track. Happy WIAW!! (and thanks for always liking my Instagram posts!!)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you! I’m sure you’ll get back on track in no time…a new year is a fresh start! And keep posting those delicious looking pics and I’ll keep liking ’em! πŸ˜‰ You’ve seriously got me craving some grilled pb&j!

  8. Lauren says:

I always give in to what my body craves. It’s way easier to let your body do the deciding than to let your food choices get all in your head!

  9. Jessica says:

The last craving I had was for exercise! After all the holiday eating, all I wanted to do was get a good sweat session in….and I did! Spin class!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh girl, I hear ya! I haven’t missed a planned workout in over 2 weeks and if I get a chance to do anything on my off days, I go for it! Feels so good to sweat it all out!

  10. Robyn :) says:

I was craving Chinese food a little while ago, but have not acted upon it yet.

Where do you get your peanut flour? I cannot find it. I will be going to Whole foods this weekend, though. Do they have it? Can you suggest anything else I should get there??? (it is 2 hours away so I do not get there often lol).

The mashed potatoes and gravy looked really good!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

There was absolutely nothing real about the mashed potatoes…totally tasted like the ones from KFC, but they were absolutely DEEEE-licious! πŸ™‚

The only place that used to sell peanut flour was Trader Joes and they discontinued their line (boo!). I got mine from http://www6.netrition.com/protein_plus_peanut_flour.html…decent price and they have flat rate shipping too!

Hmmm, what to get from Whole Foods…every time I go, I ALWAYS get at least one pint of Arctic Zero, and I go mad crazy in the bulk bin section (oats, quinoa, nutritional yeast, flour…that’s where I get my whole wheat pastry flour for my pancakes). Have fun on your little road trip! Let me know what all you get!! πŸ™‚

  11. The last craving I had was for gingerbread…which has resulted in me testing a recipe five times in the past three days. Cravings can be dangerous!

[Glad you posted about that PB hummus. I marked that MONTHS ago and forgot about it….]

  12. Nicole says:

Love the food today! The griddle looks like something I could use – actually! I can’t get behind the hummus but that Ghiradelli chocolate square looks divine!

  13. Emily says:

I’m the same way when it comes to grocery stores- I always leave with WAY more than what I “needed”. Oh well! An electric griddle is practically a necessity anyways. πŸ™‚

I’m sorry that the hospital meal was such a fail. But it looks like the rest of your meals made up for it!

  14. Ulya says:

Generally, I crave for two things: chocolate and pizza. My last craving was for chocolate, and I gave in and ate some. But usually, I try not to listen my cravings and exercise instead. When you exercise, all you crave is water:)

  15. The last craving I had was for a mini Hershey’s cookies n’ cream bar… it’s 7 am in the morning, but I went for it. πŸ˜‰

Yay I’m glad you ended up buying that pancake griddle! It was definitely a necessary purchase!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Love it! Hey, a little breakfast appetizer doesn’t hurt every once in a while! πŸ˜‰

My thoughts exactly…it needed me as much as I needed it! Can’t wait to bust it out this weekend!

  16. Ironic you made the dessert hummus because I had been craving my banana bread hummus and made the boy stop and pick up some garbanzo beans so I could make it! I love that stuff!!

  17. Ashley says:

Ahhhh! buckeyes! Now you’ve got me craving those babies! My mom always use to make them when we were little, except we just called them Peanut Butter Balls…lame, i know.
Hmm, the last thing i was craving was a big yogurt parfait topped with a vegan brownie and a big heaping of peanut butter. Did i go for it? Heck yes! After i ate it, i admit, i felt ashamed of myself, but now i look back and am happy that i gave in to my cravings…just what i needed!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well I’m glad to hear you came to your senses…because that doesn’t sound like any treat to be ashamed of! Just think…there are so many worse things out there. Sounds to me like you made a pretty “healthy” choice…and NOW you have ME craving peanut butter! Hahaha!

  18. Isn’t that Sweet Leaf the best?! My favorite is a toss-up between the citrus and the honey-mint… if you ever see either of those you should totally pick one up!! And I just posted about those pumpkin spice Ghiradellis the other day too… I picked some up in San Fran (the only time I’ve ever seen them!), and I only have one left that I’m saving… but I doubt I can hold out for long! πŸ™‚

  19. What delicious eats! That dessert hummus looks incredible!

  20. I love me some french toast!!
My current craving is the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday’s, I’m trying to talk the husband into taking us tonight, a little more $$ on the credit card won’t hurt the already bulging limit πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmmm, LOVE the Ruby Tuesday salad bar! I swear each time I go, I find something new to add! Hope you were able to satisfy your craving! Happy New Year!

  21. janetha says:

um, yeah, that dessert hummus is calling MY name. janeeeethaaaaa

  22. Lindsay says:

Pumpkin spice ghiradelli?!? Gaaaaah where has that been. I seriously need some of that. Although I have a bag of salted caramel ones in my room, so I can’t really complain. Those enchiladas look so dank though.

After eating hummus for 10 days in Israel, dessert hummus sounds like a nice change. I’m gonna have to get on that trend.

  23. Lexie says:

Ohmygosh, hospital mashed potato…my experiences have been TERRIBLE! When I was in various admissions they used to make it with flour and water and nothing else…then it would go hard, get a skin, turn into a rock, and be used for various useful purposes! I’ve never had french toast before either; I once ordered it and it came instead as a really soggy toasted sandwich with runny eggs inside…? I was not happy! My last craving was … paprika coconut and lentil curry. It tasted so incredible. Lentils on there own taste so bland; only smoked paprika can liven those poor things up.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my gosh, what in the world are they trying to pass off as French toast?! C’mon over hon, and I’ll gladly fry you up some…sans soggy bread and runny eggs! Too funny about the potatoes…reminds me of the rolls they serve us at the hospital that could double as door stops…paper weights…or just something to throw at stupid people! Haha!

And oh yeah, smoked paprika makes ANYTHING better! Your curry dish sounds amazing!
