Aussie Love & Neverending Smoothie Bowls

Hey guys! Are you ready to party?

Yep, it’s that fabulous time of week again…

Happy What I Ate Wednesday…with a new theme!

“Sensible Snacking!”

Be sure to pop on over to Peas & Crayons and show a little support for our hostess with the mostest! Thanks Jenn, for all the work you do each week so that we can all party hardy!

I have to say, yesterday was pretty darn delicious…

Breakfast:
ONE cup of coffee (I’ve been working scaling back a bit and I have to say, it’s been easier than I thought it would be), Incredible eggs, 1/2 a peach sprinkled with cinnamon, and a whole wheat English muffin schmeared with butter and cream cheese

and….

Aussie love in the form a squeeze tube!

A HUGE thank you to Lizzi for showing me that Vegemite is like 110% better than Marmite…sorry to my Brits, but it’s true!

I enjoyed it again for breakfast this morning…as I probably will the rest of the week!

“Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! Oi! Oi!”

Sensible Snack #1:
Handful of baby carrots and my newest savory snack addiciton…
Sahale’s Tuscan Almonds!

I picked found these babies on sale near the bulk bin section at Whole Foods and I’ve been hoarding saving them for a special day random Monday…

Close your eyes and you’ll SWEAR you’re eating cheesy buttery garlic bread in an outdoor bistro in the middle of Italy!

Now if only I could get my hands on the BBQ flavor!

Sensible Snack #2
Unpictured 100 calorie pack Smart Pop Popcorn
Just a little something to tide me over until lunch…ya know, so I didn’t chew my arm off!

Lunch:
DeliciousΒ Which Wich leftovers and a cup of super-sweet, juicy pineapple

Sensible Snack #3 (Preworkout):
Blueberry Pure Bar*

*BOGO free sale on the variety boxes running until the end of the month!

OMG was this was good…
Like, close-your-eyes-tilt-your-head-and-moan good! πŸ˜‰

For the record, I’m pretty sure this is what the blueberry muffin Larabar is trying to be!

I actually savored every last bite (where I usually woof down a bar like this in like 3 bites) on my way to the gym after work. Once I got there, I gathered my keys, water bottle, earbuds, and ???

Yep, I totally forgot my gym bag at home!

On the way home to get my bag (that was waiting oh so conveniently on the kitchen table), I decided the day was just TOO nice to stay indoors. So I walked the 1/2 a mile to the park up the road and did THIS workout surrounded my trees, birds, and a cool (and MUCH needed) breeze!

Fitness Blender’s workouts are NO joke! I was smoked after the hour it took me to complete this circuit 3 times AND I’m more than feeling the burn today!

All I wanted after my workout was a shower and something COLD!

Green smoothie to the rescue!

The “Great Pumpkin” Β Green Smoothie

by Heather Powers

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: N/A

Ingredients (1 LARGE serving)

  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • 1 cup leftover juice pulp (optional)*
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 a banana
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 3-5 drops liquid Stevia (optional)
  • 5-6 ice cubes
  • 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • 1/8 teaspoon guar gum*Acts as a great thickener and is a good way to use up leftover pulp! If not using, decrease water by
1/4-1/2 cup.

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smoothie and creamy.

Add some crunch with a topping of cereal/granola and a good drizzle of nut butter!

Powered by Recipage

Notice the name “Great Pumpkin”?

Well, that’s not JUST for it’s great flavor and texture…nope, this baby was
1 1/2 quarts (1.4 liters) of creamy refreshing goodness!

Needless to say there was no room for dessert later on that night! πŸ˜‰

Water Count: ……

Remember how one of my goals for June was to aim for 4 liters (about a gallon) of water a day? Well, let’s just say, so far I’m exceeding my expectations…

I lost count after FIVE LITERS!

AND I’ve had about SIX liters today! I’m really starting to realize what they say about drinking water before a meal is true…I’ve felt much more satisfied and even slowed down during my meals since I’ve upped the water intake. Win win!

Have you ever tried Vegemite or Marmite? Which do you prefer?

What is your favorite AND least favorite leg move?
LOVE = Lunges
HATE = Jumping Lunges or Star Jacks
(Who am I kidding, I pretty much despise all plyometric exercises…because I’m a whiner! ;))Β

  1. I much prefer promite. Much better than vegemite. Have you been introduced to Tim Tams? Basically the best thing to come out of Australia since the brits kicked us out πŸ˜€

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’ve never heard of promite before…what’s it like? And yes, I’ve got THREE whole packages of Tim Tams…but I haven’t opened them yet! Kinda scared I’ll demolish them all in a matter of seconds! Lol

  2. Hey – I didn’t know you were a marmite/vegemite fan! I am a HUGE fan of vegemite, but have only been able to get my hands on marmite in the states (which is fine, just not as good – like you said)- where did you find yours? I plan on stocking up when I’m in Australia in a few weeks. =)

  3. Pinned the smoothie recipe. πŸ˜‰
I used to make those snack bags. One out a TJ canvas bag. come in so handy for sandwiches and snacks. And easy to clean – throw it in the washer. πŸ˜‰

Your green eggs had me. I have a jar Amazing grass. might need to think about trying it. πŸ˜‰ and then making green eggs and ham. haha. i know. cheesy. mimics your ‘green eggs and jam’ comment.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

C’mon! Cheesy is my middle name! You have to do it tho…so good!

Ugh, I wish I was crafty…the only thing I can do with a needle and thread is put a button back on!

  4. That smoothie looks fab! I’m so glad I’m not the only one still enjoying pumpkin even as summer edges nearer and nearer…! Love 100-cal popcorn bags too, can’t be beat for a quick snack!

  5. Heather, where did you get your great little bag that you have your carrots in? Water is SO good for you. Keep up the good work with that!

  6. lindsay says:

now you see why we stocked up on vegemite before we left New Zealand?! It’s ADDICTING!

  7. That workout looks killer! I’ve stopped doing full lower body workouts because they always make me so unbelievably sore for 4 days afterward – especially lunges and squats! πŸ˜›

Also you’re amazing with your water consumption! I think I only had… maybe 3 cups yesterday? I need to remember to take my water bottle out with me when I’m running errands!

  8. katie says:

    Happy WIAW!!

Loving your smoothie in a bowl combo! Looks amazing!!! I have been loving smoothies lately! Summer time makes me crave them!

    <3

  9. i tried vegemite once and i really wasn’t a fan..its definitely a required taste!

  10. I’ve never had marmite or vegemite…what exactly are they?? :-X
I LOVE lunges and HATE mountain climbers! ICK. And plank jacks. Those can go to hell LOL.
P.S. The comic book app I got is called Halftone. I think it was 99 cents. I love it!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I guess they’d be considered condiments. They both have a sharp salty taste…similar to the taste of worcestershire sauce. Definitely an acquired taste. Kind of a love it or hate it sort of thing. Ugh, plank jacks CAN go to hell! Blah!

      Halftone. Got it! Thanks!!

  11. Yum- all of your food looks delicious! That’s my kind of day!! I love a big smoothie for dinner- I feel like it pulls double duty and also knocks out my dessert craving. πŸ™‚
What does vegemite taste like? Can you compare it to anything?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I keep thinking worcestershire sauce, but a little more sharp…concentrated. Mixed with cream cheese it’s amazing (the creaminess totally balances the salty taste of the Vegemite!)

And oh yeah, smoothies totally knock out my craving for sweets late at night!

  12. That blueberry bar looks amazing! As does that pumpkin smoothies, I went to bed thinking I would have one this morning, maybe I should try pumpkin this morning…hmmm but with chocolate.

  13. Kat says:

LOVE the leg work!! I typically hate leg workouts, since I use mine so much already in soccer!! I hate jump lunges, but actually love most plyo moves!! My favorite is a long jump straight into a squat jump. Talk about a booty burner!

  14. I need to try vegemite. I love marmite on my eggs! I love plyometrics. I’m a sicko that way.

  15. Mmm green smoothies are the best! I have tried the cherry cashew Pure Bar and loved i but wasn’t sure if the blueberry would be really good- can’t wait to try it now!

  16. Blahhh I hate vegemite! My uncle is from Australia and gave some to us and my sister’s and I didn’t like it at all haha.

  17. Alexia says:

hey heather! its been a while since i commented and i havent realized that you got all crazy about green recipes πŸ™‚ AMAZING! i love you smoothie bowls and the green eggs are a real inspiration! will make them asap! I have tried different grass powders too but now stick to simple barleygrass, wheatgrass or chlorella.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hey Alexia! I can’t believe I’m JUST now getting to responding to comments from this post. Since I fell out of blogging the week after this post, I never realized I didn’t check my comments on this one. So good to “see” you! The green eggs are definitely a MUST. I’ve been wanting to find some fresh wheat grass to experiment with in my new juicer! πŸ™‚

  18. Outside workouts are awesome! I am with you on the jumping lunges, haaaaaate them.

  19. Woah those almonds sound so good! I’ve never seen those!

Smoothie bowls are like my go-to meal/snack/anything in the summer!!!

  20. Pumpkin green smoothie– yummm!!!

  21. Nikki says:

Oh my goodness! Those almonds sound terrific!

  22. smart pop popcorn is my boyfriend. totally is.

  23. Okay, I definitely have to ask, what is juice pulp? Is it something you buy or acquire after making juice?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It’s from making juice! You can also make what’s called “pulp crackers” with it, but I haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. So, instead of just throwing it away, I threw it in my smoothie! πŸ™‚

  24. i. hate. vegemite. i thought it’d be right up my alley because it’s such a funky vegetarian food. but no. oh, well. everything else looks delicious! i like your idea of using a food processor for the smoothie. i might have to give that a try…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, it definitely is an acquired taste. Not for everyone…just like the Marmite (ick!!!)

And to think, I used to think I NEEDED a blender! Though I do have one tip: Always pour the smoothie from the food processor, NEVER take the blade out first…unless you want a rendition of A River Runs Through It in your kitchen! Lol

  25. Janetha says:

    grooooosss i hate vegemite

  26. Lizzi says:

Ahhh I’m so happy to have brought vegemite to your life – these people who hate it CLEARLY need a how-to guide from me :p

That smoothie looks killer! I can’t wait for the weather to warm up here so I’ll actually feel like smoothies and juice again!

  27. Ugh…I hate when I forget something I need to go workout. This may be TMI, but I usually wear cutesy underwear during the day (gotta have a lil somthin, somethin to feel special, right?) and then I pack granny panties to wear at they gym. Of course, a lot of times this is the very thing I leave out of my bag! I’m then forced to workout while simultaneously attempting to descreetly pick wedgies throughout the entire workout. Lol!

  28. Right there with you on the jump lunges…blahhh!
Favorite – split squats and single,straight-leg deadlifts

  29. Georgia says:

Yay for Vegemite – massive pat on the back from an Aussie fan (of both Vegemite and your blog)! It’s such an iconic food here and is consumed on a daily basis in our household.
Don’t ever let any Brit/Kiwi tell you Marmite/Promite is better. Neither can be trusted! hehehe!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! That’s funny, someone JUST mentioned Promite in another comment…I’ve never even heard of it before, but good to know it’s not worth my time! πŸ˜‰

Thank you so much for commenting, Georgia! Sorry it took me so long to respond!

  30. Marie-Sophie says:

I LOVE Vegemite! I’m from Germany but my Aussie friends have converted me πŸ™‚ … it’s amazing on crackers or on toast (preferably with an over-easy egg on top *yum*)!!

Wow, 6 liters – that’s a lot! Don’t you have to be careful with drinking too much?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yum! Yes, Vegemite and eggs were MEANT for each other!

And yes, you can drink too much water, but I think it would be more in a case of forcing yourself to drink it. I was thirsty so I drank! Of course, since then I seem to be averaging more around 4 liters a day now. πŸ™‚

  31. Carly says:

Ew; vegemite, isn’t that the stuff that tastes like grass? haha I’m jk, I like tons of things that people think are weird so who am I to talk right? (: But seriously, what does it taste like to you?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, it definitely doesn’t taste like grass! Hmm, let’s see…*goes to cupboard and grabs tube*…hmm, I think I’m gonna go with a blend of things: salty, yeasty (like how beer smells…good beer, not the nasty stuff…not that you should know anything about that sort of thing, right? ;)), with a taste that kind of reminds me of worcestershire sauce? Does that help? πŸ™‚

      • Carly says:

Hmmm; maybe i’ll give it a chance. What do you put yours on?

        • kissmybroccoli says:

So far, I’ve been stuck on the combo of butter and eggs on toast, but it’s also good mixed with cream cheese (the creaminess cuts the sharp saltiness of the Vegemite really well). And Lizzi told me it’s amazing on garlic bread! πŸ™‚

          • Carly Clark says:

hmm, and I have a question for you about blogging, why don’t I get emails to tell me that you responded to my comments? I wonder if it’s like that on my blog too, did you know that was the case? Because on some blogs I get an email saying that the author has responded to my comment.

  32. Lauren says:

I’m hoping you told them your name was Athena at Which Wich and not that you have a co-worker named Athena who picked it up for you. The first story is more fun πŸ˜› I have been craving a hummus sandwich from WW for weeks! Must.go.now.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

OF COURSE I let them think my name was Athena! Where would the fun be without that? Lol Get your booty to Which Wich girl!
