The Cookie Conundrum

What’s up guys?

Looks like it’s time for another edition of What I Ate Wednesday hosted by the ever talented Jenn of Peas & Crayons. Be sure to stop by P&C and show some love and support for all of her hard work getting this shindig up each week…especially with the stress of the holiday season!

Speaking of the holiday season, I hinted at this in yesterday’s post, but I’m totally leveling with you today…

My name is Heather and I’m addicted to Christmas cookies.

[source]

I am an equal opportunity addict as well…discriminating not against any cookie the season may offer, be it chewy, crunchy, layered, or sugar coated….hell, I don’t even have to be hungry!

But before I get too ahead of myself, allow me to show you how my morning started:

Plain Greek yogurt mixed with a little peanut flour, Kashi Golden Goodness, fresh organic raspberries and an un-pictured cup of black coffee…healthy enough right?

If only I had known what awaited me once I got to work…

The above is a picture of a tray of cookies that my co-worker brought in on Monday. Each and every year his wife sends him to work with this plate of sugar and I always vow that the next year I will be more selective and not overdo it.

And each and every year, I fail….miserably.

It always starts out innocently enough.

“I’ll just try one cookie…”

“Oh wow, that was good…maybe I’ll have just one more…”

Then suddenly I lose all conception of life’s simplest tasks (stressing that on COUNTING) and end up like that person standing in a 15 items or less line with many many more than 15 items…all the while oblivious to the rest of the world.

Seriously guys, I think I ate almost half the tray by myself! πŸ™

I had grand plans for lunch. There was going to be salad, a steamed sweet potato drizzled with cashew butter, and toasty bread…

I somehow managed to find room for one of those things…and the thought of nut butter at the time was nauseating so I went with my trusty BBQ seasoning.

For the rest of the afternoon, I guzzled water and told myself

“NO MORE COOKIES!”

Though before heading out at the end of the day, I ended up eating at least 3 more!

Damn you, Sugar Gods!

Needless to say, I drove straight to the gym after work:

And well, it turns out, cookies may be the next experiment in carb loading:

BAAAAAAM!

After my run, I continued to guzzle water and actually didn’t get hungry until a few hours later.

Then I realized what I was craving and I wasn’t at all surprised…

Massaged kale salad (Bragg’s liquid aminos, dijon mustard, nutritional yeast, and a little water) topped with orange bell pepper and mushrooms

And it totally hit the spot…

For an hour.

Then, I found myself in the kitchen scraping down the sides of this:

Turns out, I have a sixth sense for finding cookies in my cookie-less house!

And with that, I’ve decided that I need an intervention…
Either that, or I’m going to reserve myself to eating only stale bread and unsweetened applesauce for the rest of the year. I may have got a great run time out of this, but it doesn’t change the fact that I feel like gum stuck to the bottom of a sneaker!

Help!

How do you get off the cookie train once you’ve jumped on for the season?

Anybody know if they’ve developed sucrose patches yet?…you know, like nicotine patches only for quitting sugar! πŸ˜‰

  1. I think we could be best-cookie-friends. LOL!

After the holidays I have to go cold turkey with the sweets and holiday drinks. There’s no weaning option for me. πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yep, me too! Seemed to work last year…once you get all that sugar out of your system, it’s amazing how the cravings vanish!

  2. Ahh story of my life. I’m gonna try HARD this year not to overdo it, to avoid the crazy sea of guilt! Cookies are just so good…

  3. lindsay says:

oh yes, the cookie craze! at this point during the holidays, i am actually thankful for my Gluten intolerance. Otherwise I’d be with you hoarding the cookie tray and more.
    Oh happy holidays!

  4. Ulya says:

For me, if I eat one cookie, I eat the whole batch. So the trick is not to have any cookies around you. Because the more you eat, the more you want to eat. But if I make a mistake and eat a lot during holidays, which I always do, I try not to eat any sugary food for a week.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

That was what I was trying to do after the other day…”trying” being the operative word! So far today, I’ve been cookie free…hmm, you think there’s a Cookie Addcit Anonymous meeting I can check into? πŸ˜‰

  5. I can’t resist the cookies which is why THERE ARE NONE IN MY HOUSE!! Thank goodness, no one has given us any…yet…Never thought of bbq seasoning on a sweet potato…Great idea!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, if you do get any, just break them up into pieces, right! πŸ˜‰

I love the taste of sweet BBQ…this is one of my favorite combos!

  6. Solution: develop a severe allergy to nuts. That way you can’t eat any treats that people bring in to work because you don’t know what went into baking them. Story of my life. πŸ˜›

If I didn’t have allergies, I don’t think I would have been able to resist those either. They look sooo good! I wouldn’t stress out about splurging too much. It’s the holidays after all! πŸ˜‰ And it looks like you’re balancing it out with some good healthy meals.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, I feel so bad for all of you guys with nut allergies…I think that has to be one of the worst allergies for a food blogger…especially with all the nut butters floating around! πŸ™

Thanks girl! I’m trying to do my best, but I know after the beginning of the year, I’m definitley getting a bit more serious. Let’s just say scrubs hide things VERY well! Lol

  7. I have the same addiction! No matter what, I can not say no! And once the sugary goodness hits my lips I can’t stop. Thank Goodness for gyms! πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know! It’s crazy how addicting sugar is! I don’t know what I’d do without my gym membership…wait, I know, I’d weigh 300+ pounds! Haha!

  8. Your not alone heather!! I have been a cookie monster since my Christmas cookie party. I had to wrap the leftover cookies 10 times in foil and stick them in the freezer. That seemed to help, and making healthy sweet treats. I just posted how a apple pie filling smoothie Ii made, helped curb my sugar cravings. Christmas is almost here and the cookies will be gone soon.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“Christmas is almost here and the cookies will be gone soon.” <-Thank God!! I haven't done any baking myself this year...mainly because I know I'll probably just eat half the batter and THEN want to keep all the cookies to myself! Haha! I am definitely checking out that apple pie smoothie! Sounds dreamy!

  9. Hahahaha I love that you’re an equal opportunity addict. I am too! My b-friend is super picky about cookies, and I’ll basically eat any of them πŸ˜‰

I’ve never had the Mint flavor of Arctic Zero! How is it?! I’m not normally a mint + chocolate fan (ok so that’s like the ONE combo I don’t love) but I also surprised myself by liking the cookies & creme over the pb& chocolate. so who knows!

Merry Christmas and happy WIAW! πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’m not a huge mint chocolate chip ice cream fan but the mint is pretty subtle in this. I didn’t like the pb chocolate at all…had kind of a fake pb flavor. Ick!

Merry Christmas and happy WIAW to you too lovely lady! Hope those new sneaks are treating you well in the gym today! πŸ™‚

  10. Eric says:

Yeah I bought the premade chocolate chip cookies to make for coworkers..told myself that I could have a couple.

A couple turned into 20 or so πŸ™ Had to buy new packages of cookies hahhah

  11. I’m a cookie monster! πŸ˜›
I’ve been dying to try that Arctic Zero Ice Cream! I’m SO bummed that its not sold here in Germany! πŸ™

  12. Nice run! Nice pace. Was that because you horded the cookie plate as your own for lunch? πŸ˜‰

  13. I’ve been on a chip bender lately instead of cookies. Damn holidays (and hormones in my case, sheesh!). I can’t keep away from the crispy crunchy chippy goodness! Thank goodness for ass-kicking yoga classes and circuit workouts at home! πŸ™‚

  14. LauraJayne says:

I think we should form a cookie eater’s support group – I thought after finding out that I couldn’t eat gluten I’d be able to eat less cookies, but my sweet and helpful friends and co-workers bring desserts just for me now! It’s worse, because I CAN’T turn them down, even if I had the willpower to do it before (I didn’t). Now I just use it as a convenient excuse! I do like that I have a ton more energy for my workouts though… I just know there’s no way I’m burning off ALL of the cookies I’m eating!

  15. Lou says:

    mmmm cookies.

I just make heaps of “healthy” cookies to contribute – low sugar etc… then I can eat as many as I jolly well like. HA.

  16. haha! this post cracks me up. cookies are soooo tempting during the holidays. besides the cookies though – the rest of your day was quite healthy so i wouldn’t be too worried. a part of me is jealous of your cookie plate and another part is glad i don’t have to face it…yet that is.

  17. I’m still on the cookie/sugary everything train myself! I’ve even been dumping some sugar on my oats in the morning! haha. I do the same thing though! I always want to “try a bite” and end up eating like 8564683 bites haha πŸ™‚

  18. oh man, i feel your pain! i “accidentally” had cookies for dinner the other night. i didn’t even realize how many i was eating until i was stuffed. i think half of my problem was that i made a little plate, brought them to the table, then ate them while i wrote thank-you cards. then i made another plate. and another. i honestly don’t even know how many i ate.

i need to remember to concentrate on what i’m eating. i KNOW i wouldn’t have eaten so many if i was paying attention to it.

  19. Emily says:

Oh man, I thought I was the only one who did stuff like that. I always feel SO disgusted by myself afterward, so it’s good to know I’m not alone? Haha. Tomorrow is actually cookie-baking day for me, so we’ll see how that goes… Eep. Wish me luck!!

  20. After standing in the kitchen over the cookie tin bearing the chow mein noodle “Haystacks” (hay-CRACK, really) last night for an excessive amount of time, my stomach was a bit unhappy with me this morning. I sent the rest of the cookies with my dad and stepmom in the car to Wisconsin.

Hopefully I won’t make myself any more.

PS- I need to try that dressing concoction! It sounds delicious. πŸ™‚

  21. Cookies and brownies…I can NOT control myself around them. I’m a sugar addict, too. They taste good at the time, but I always have to remember how I feel after.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

See my problem is I have some sort of hormonal thing….like women get after childbirth…that makes me forget ALL about how I feel afterward! Haha!

  22. elise says:

i got my “lady fun” while in buenos aires and probably ate a million and one pounds of chocolate. it. was. epic. and disgusting all at once. haha. i feel your cookie love.

  23. The husband of mine keeps bringing home platter and tupperware containers full of Christmas cookies. It starts with just one and next thing I know, I’m eating my weight in sprinkles and frosting…freaking cookies can suck my ass. They just taste so dang good!!!
