About

Hey there!

I’m Heather, the gal behind the broccoli stalk! This blog has been through MANY phases in the four years it’s been on the map…from experimenting in the kitchen and sharing every meal with my camera phone to refining my photography skills and developing a knack for recipe development. While things have shifted more to life and travel, I do still share the occasional recipe because let’s face it, once a foodie, always a foodie annnnnnd foodies like to share…figuratively of course. Get ‘yo hands off my sweet potato fries! 😉

I started KMB in 2010 shortly after a huge change in my life. As a recent divorcee, I needed something to focus my energies on. Instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself, I realized that I’d been given an opportunity to reflect and find the things that brought ME joy. As someone who has always enjoyed making food for others, it should come as no surprise that I actually stumbled into the food/healthy living blog community after Googling healthy recipes. I started trying out a couple of recipes on the blogs I found and the next thing I knew, I had all these ideas for recipes of my own! While I had absolutely no idea what I was doing at the time (and sometimes still don’t), late one November night, KMB was born!

I believe in the importance of eating a balanced diet…even if sometimes that means a cookie in each hand because diet is just as much about mental health as it is physical health. It took me a while to realize that. After years of delving deeper and deeper into the world of health and fitness, I developed an unhealthy relationship with food. In March of 2013, I discovered intuitive eating (click here for more info) and it seriously changed my life! It really is amazing how much your perspective can change once you let go of society’s “perfect” standards. I don’t believe in labeling yourself by what that you eat…meat, no meat, healthy, unhealthy. You should eat whatever makes YOU happy…and pardon my French, but fuck what everyone else thinks!

Other than that, I’m just a small town girl living in ♫ a lonely world ♫ middle Tennessee. I graduated from college with a degree in radiologic technology…which sounds so smart and cool, but it’s just a fancy way of saying x-ray. I work the nightshift as a CAT scan tech…you can call me crazy, but whatever you do, don’t call me a nurse. 😉

I love spending time with family and friends, being outdoors, drinking wine, reading books with pretty covers, discovering new music (check out my Music Monday tab for some of my favorites), dreaming of beach vacations, sweating my ass off in hot yoga, and sleeping in…whenever it’s physically possible. I cuss like a sailor and have the sense of humor of a teenage boy. I’m easily amused and have self-diagnosed ADD. I really could go on and list the things that make me me, but where’s the fun in that? If you REALLY wanna get to know me, you’re just gonna have to keep reading! Hopefully you like what you see and if not, well…

You can kiss my broccoli! 😉

    • Thank you so much Parita! It really is all about creativity and trusting yourself in the kitchen, isn’t it? Eating nutritiously is not as hard as people make it out to be!

Hey Heather – so I’m kinda new to this blogging thing, in fact, this is my first time! I too live in TN. I’ve always loved eating good food. There is nothing quite like the way really exquisite food can make you close your eyes and forget where you are for a moment!! I’m 27 and recently divorced. I was too depressed for a long time to cook for myself. (anything other than fishsticks or peanut butter and jelly!) But my heart is on the mend, and my appetite (for food and life!) is SLLOOOOWLY returning! haha. So I wanted to say thank you for your blog! I can’t wait to read more!!

    • Thank you so much for popping in and saying hello Lexi! It’s amazing how similar our stories sound. My love of the kitchen (and enjoying food in general) was the first thing to go when depression reared its ugly head during my divorce. It took me a long time before I was able to find joy in anything again. I remember that time when I started to come around and “see the light at the end of the tunnel” if you will. Stick with it girl, I promise it DOES get better!

If you ever need to talk about anything, I’ve always been a good listener. I know one of the biggest problems I had going through my divorce was finding someone just to listen (and not bash my ex). I’m just an email away!

  22. Hi Heather! I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself because we have mutual blog “friends” 🙂 I’ve only been blogging for a few months and I just started reading your blog shortly after that. I have been truly LOVING it. And I just thought it was about time that I comment and let you know that I think you’re awesome and I absolutely love your blog 🙂 Thanks so much!

  23. Hi Heather!

Thank you so, so much for your help! I’m happy I’ve found your blog now! 😀 😀 😀

I’m very sorry that I needed so long for a proper response and thank you, especially given your support! These days, I have a little technical trouble (my laptop died last weekend), so I’m not as present in the blog sphere as I’d like to be. I’ll be back to your blog with a vengeance as soon as I have a new laptop, hopefully by the end of the week.

    Have a happy day!
    Kath

    • You’re very welcome Kath! I hope you are getting enough feedback to help with your thesis. It’s a very interesting topic! Good luck with getting the new laptop!

      • It’s going quite well, thank you for asking! 🙂 And I’ve borrowed a notebook from a friend, so I’m back in the net now and about to hop over to your homepage.

Love your food philosophy, btw! The “You are what you eat”, and freeing yourself from labels. 🙂

I just found your blog through Pumped for Pumpkin and I LOVE IT! AHH your foods are delicious and droolworthy and I just love your broccoli-kissin awesomeness. Can’t wait to read more! 🙂

  25. Cute blog name, makes me smile.

You take really good pictures. I just read the post about protein pancake. I have protein pancake recipes and then there are days where I want shortcut and just add protein powder to Kodiak pancake mix and call it breakfast. It satisfies me the same.

Thank you Lea! I just took a quick look at your blog and I can’t wait to see more! You have some pretty stunning photographs as well!

  26. Hey girl, nice to meet ya!! Thanks for following me on twitter because it lead me to your blog and I love it! I love your blog title too 🙂 lol and I love your food philosophy too. I hate the feeling of being labeled when it comes to food. Sometimes I won’t eat meet for a while, and other times I’ll eat a ton of chicken and turkey! Whatever makes me feel good!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you Lisa! And thanks for stopping by! I don’t think we should ever live our lives according to our food. Eat what you love for yourself and no one else! <3

  27. Jenn says:

Oh I am SOOO excited I just came across your blog! You are right up my alley – I love to cook and eat clean and agree that the right spices make things so yummy. Plus, how much better do you feel for including all those clean, nutritious foods in your diet? Since I started eating clean, I noticed so many benefits and feel amazing. Very happy to add your blog to my google reader… I’d been searching for another healthy, fun blog recently!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Welcome Jenn! I’m so glad you found me too! Thanks for taking the time to say hey! So true how much better you feel once weed out all the processed junk and include more “clean” foods…no more feeling “bogged down” like I did when I ate all the preservative laden stuff! Hope to see more comments from you in the future! And happy new year!

Actually, when Jay (my computer guy) and I were trying to figure out what was going on with my high CPU usage, we had to delete a few things to see if it helped. Hey,
Did you think about putting an opt-in form of some sort to capture the emails of all the people who’ve been to your blog? It looks like you have a ton and there’s nothing wrong with putting together an ebook of recipes that you put together and selling it for a few measly bucks that could make you a real decent living….i’m just sayin….

  33. Hey girlie! Question, where do you host your blog?

  34. Zeniram says:

I saw your coconut pancake recipe. It looks delicious! However, my husband is allergic to all sorts of nuts. What can I substitute for almond milk?

  35. Hi Heather, I just recently found you through Instagram however, this is my first visit to your blog…just wanted to let you know I’m loving it! Hope you’re having a great 4th!

    Hi Heather!

My name is Sue, and found your blog today thru mouthwateringfoods.blogspot.com
    – it captured my interest! I’m from SlimKicker (a healthy living/fitness app), and was wondering if we can do a giveaway for your blog readers?

Our site basically turns people’s health/fitness goals into a level up game with challenges such as quitting soda for a week. We’re looking for new challenge ideas, so was thinking of holding a contest where your readers leave a comment on a health challenge idea, and we’ll pick our favorite challenge idea, use it on our site, and give the winner either a free digital health scale, slow cooker, or digital heart monitor.

Let me know if you’re interested by email: sue (at) slimkicker.com

PS. You can choose not to publish this comment since it’s not really a comment, I just couldn’t find your email address =)

    Best,
    Sue

  40. Hi Heather.. Love the blog! Just wondering how you edit your pictures so they are collaged like side by side or a few pictures. thanks 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you Caroline! I started out using Picasa from Google, but recently switched to Pic Monkey since it allows for more manipulation within the collage. But the best part? They’re both FREE programs! 😀

I’m a kissmybroccoli virgin, and I have to say, wow! Great stuff. I love cooking. I do most of it for my family. You have plenty of great recipes here and all kinds of goodness. Tough to pick just one fav. What’s on the horizon for you? Do you have any appetizers in the works? My wife and I throw a party every Christmas and we prep and prep and prep (Okay, I prep and prep and prep.) for a week to get ready for this and I’m always looking for ideas. Hit me with your best shot!

  42. Denis says:

I meant to add, you should have your own Food Network program. Have you ever thought about going on the Next Food Network Star? You’d be great.

  43. Hi,

I’m working on a pancake story for The Huffington Post Kitchen Daily. We are highlighting the 10-15 best pancake recipes on the web and I came across your blog post. I would love to include your recipe and photo in my piece. I couldn’t find an email address to reach out to you about it. I’d appreciate it if you could get back to me about it.

    Heather,

Just wanted to say thank you – sometimes it is easy to forget to make time for simple pleasures. I have been down lately and every once in a while I remember your website and it makes me smile every time I visit.

It is easy to see that you are a good egg.

Thanks for sharing your world and helping make mine a little better.

    Eddie

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, Eddie! You seriously just MADE MY DAY! That is one of the very reasons that I blog…if I hear that I’ve brightened anyone’s day even just a little, it warms my heart so much! I’m sorry to hear about you’ve been feeling down (the winter weather has been getting to me lately so I can definitely relate) but I’m SO glad I was able to be a part of lifting your spirits!

Thank you so so much for leaving this comment!

      -Heather

      • Fast Eddie says:

        Heather,
Doggonnit! I am sorry to read that you have been in the hurt locker of late. Sending you fast healing karma in copious quantities.

I had a birthday on St Patty’s Day and what I really wanted for my meal that day was pancakes. Everywhere I went was pack with lines out the door, alas I never had the pancakes. Then today I remembered you are lover of grilled batter too. 🙂 I came to get some inspiration and found your recent knee notes. As with seemingly everything, you have a way of turning it on its head and making a positive out of the situation. You are a blessing and an inspiration Heather. Hope you are healed up real soon!

        Eddie

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Seriously hon, I didn’t think I could feel more love than I did from your last comment, but now…as I sit here with my hand to my heart, I have been proven wrong! Thank you SO much for the well wishes and ALL your kind words! I sure hope that by now, you’ve managed to indulge in a bit of cake for breakfast…I mean, it’s only fitting with a birthday and all! 😉 And happy belated!!

          • Fast Eddie says:

Wow…..I am in utter and total shock. I feel a numb sense of dread and sadness. Say it isn’t so, no more pancakes?!? Please don’t consider this “hater mail” or criticism as I am not interested in giving you grief of any kind dear lady. It is just that pancakes, poor innocent harmless dear sweet pancakes should never be a source of stress, much less dread or confessions of deep dark confessions. 🙂 So let me assure you that regardless, I am still confessed you are a good egg, moreover I am certain that you have touched many people’s hearts along the way with your words and efforts. I appreciate that about you more than any flapjack flare ups.

Be kind to yourself…..but someday, hopefully you will come to want to reacquaint yourself with the power and love of “skillet bread”.

Best wishes for your continued healing with the leg and may your summer be full of love and joy from those you are around.

            Eddie

          • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Eddie! Thank you so so much for your kind words on my healing (getting better every day!) AND my decision to take a break! Rest assured the pancakes will eventually make they’re faithful return…my love of “skillet bread” runs TOO deep within me to deny it for long! 😉

Love your gumption and energy! While I usually don’t trust/believe thin folks who promote and love food, I’d give you a try:)!

How do I get on your blog?

How do you try all those great recipes and stay thin? Do you work out like ALL the time you aren’t working or creating recipes?

How would you compare the Incredible Greens you were saying were delicious with Green Vibrance? Is one healthier than the other? Hard to believe that Incredible Greens actually tastes good…..love the idea of paying the amount you can….wild.

Lastly, in one of your recipes, the nutrition information stated 12 grams = # calories. OK, how in the world do grams and tablespoons coexist?

Just tried to contact you at kissmybrocoli@gmail.com twice and it came back to me.

    that’s it!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hey there Lauralea! Thank you so much for your sweet comments! First off, I’m so sorry, but I just realized something happened to my email subscription plugin! I’m gonna have to do some Googling (since I know absolutely SQUAT about computers) and see what I can do to fix it! As far as your other questions go…I feel I’m pretty average when it comes to working out (3-5 days a week), but lately, since I’ve been having trouble with my knee (I had surgery back in March), I haven’t been doing much at all. Most of my recipes are fairly light and healthy, but I do indulge every once in a while…the key is moderation! 😉 I’ve not heard of the Green Vibrance so I’m afraid I can’t be much help in comparing it with Incredible Greens, but I will say that out of all the superfood powders I HAVE tried, IG is by far the best tasting! Which recipe were you looking into? I know occasionally give the gram weight of protein powders (because scoop size tends to vary from brand to brand), but it could be a typo.

And as far as the email goes…you were simply missing a “c”…happens all the time! 😉

We also explained the benefits of avoiding animal products.

We are contacting people who would like to receive additional income by becoming an affiliate to our products, and since your website is receiving high amounts of traffic, you can have the opportunity to earn lots of commissioned sales with our product by promoting it in your website.

I’ve JUST gotten to where I can sit Indian style for a few minutes without it hurting…yeah, and it’s been a year and a half since the surgery. But hey, at least I don’t limp around like Peg Leg anymore! 😀

Second – I don’t really have much to compare to since I’ve almost always lived in TN (and in this area), but I like it alright. The summer humidity can be a bit annoying and winters seem to go on forEVER, but the cost of living is decent, most big cities aren’t far from small town suburbs, and the tea is always sweet! 😀
