Music Monday: The Chillax Edition

Music soothes the soul.

I am a firm believer in this. Music is a powerful thing and without it, life would be very very different. For me, music is a lot of things, but lately, it’s been my reprieve, an escape from life’s craziness where everything slows down…even if it’s only on the drive to work. Without even realizing it, I’ve been trading my toe-tapping, knee-slapping, get up and DAYance beats, for melodies that help soothe my tired toes, warm my knee bones, and make me wanna get down…and sleep! And if I can’t sleep? Well, I’ll just stare into space and DAYdream. Lol

There are MANY songs I love winding down to, but today, I’m narrowing it down to the tunes I’ve not been able to get out of my head since I’ve been sampling a few of new playlists on Spotify…

Fade Into You by Mazzy Star

I know this is an oldie, but it’s definitely a goodie and actually one that I’d forgotten about until I stumbled over it on a Throwback Thursday playlist. That was just last week and I swear I’ve played it at least a half dozen times.

Karma Police by Radiohead

I’ve never really thought of myself as a Radiohead fan…well, except when I was belting out “Creep” as lead singer in my Rockband back in 2007. It’s another one from the 90’s and I know there are probably more than a few of you out there who were just being born around that time, but seriously, just listen to it.

Wait by M83

Now this is a band that’s been around for over a dozen years…but I am only now discovering them thanks to a couple of recent movie soundtracks they’ve been involved in. This particular song showed up in The Fault in Our Stars and has been one of my loves since my ol’ pal Google hooked us up.

Arsonist’s Lullabye by Hozier

Another newly discovered artist. I know EVERYONE knows “Take Me to Church” but have you listened to anything else by Hozier?
Because seriously, his stuff rocks! Love that soulful voice! Oh and FYI, he’s “pretty sure” it’s his name is pronounced “Ho-ZEE-er”…unless you’re in France and then it’s “Ho-zee-AY”. 😆

Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars

Like sweet sweet medicine to the ears. I’ve loved The Civil Wars for years. Let’s just pretend they didn’t break up five months ago and get carried away by the soothing sound of John and Joy.

My Favorite Faded Fantasy by Damien Rice

Such a beautiful song. Really, thre just aren’t any words.

Feels Like We Only Go Backwards by Tame Impala

This song. I nearly pulled off the side of the interstate the other day just so I could figure out who this was on Spotify. Luckily…I had a passenger/DJ assistant to lend a hand…to my ear. Careful, I just realized that video may induce seizures. 😉

Inside Out by Spoon

I came across a couple of Spoon albums while “shopping” for free music at the library a year or so ago, but never really looked into them until they started popping up on some of my music suggestions. No way you can listen to this song and not start bobbing your head. And this video might help calm your visual senses after the last one…though you’ll probably feel like you’re on drugs.

Hunger of the Pine by Alt-J

I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before, but hell, I’ll say it again, I rarely know what dear ol’ Joe is saying, but I would listen to him sing songs about paint drying. This of course is only ONE of my favorite songs off their new album, This Is All Yours. I even forgive them for including some sampling from Miley Cyrus.

Elevate by St. Lucia

While I could go on and on, I think I’ll end it today with this little gem. One of those songs that I fell in love with months ago seconds after hitting play. Hopefully it brings some love to your Monday…and the rest of your week!

What’s one of your favorite “chill” songs?

Highlights from the weekend?
You know I had to work…allow me to live vicariously.

  1. I love Fade Into You and Karma Police! I’ll have to check out the others. Honestly like 90% of my music is chill music. Unless I’m working out or at a party/bar, I’d just much rather relax to calm music! Some of my favourites are songs by Cat Power, Brett Dennen, Great Lake Swimmers, and Jose Gonzalez.

Ohhh, I like some of Cat Power’s stuff…New York, New York was one of the first songs I ever heard from her. I’ll have to check out those other bands…I’m pretty sure Jose Gonzalez popped up on my Spotify the other day!

Wow! These are so great. I actually didn’t think I would like any of them, since I never heard of any of these artists before (my repertoire of music knowledge is limited to mainstream music :P). But some of these songs are really good! Like that Karma Police song. I look forward for your future music related posts.

Oh Angela!! You have MADE my day! My little music-loving heart is singing…pun totally intended! So glad you liked the songs and that this helped open you up to some new artists!

  3. I swear you are my music soulmate. I love all of these. And The Civil Wars broke my heart.

Right?! I may or may not have gotten defensive when my friend first told me…like ‘I’ was a member of the band! Haha! Awww, 🙁
