Sprinkle Me Happy!

How about some

CAKE BATTER OATMEAL?!

How’s that for getting your attention? I have seen SO many different bloggers riding out the cake batter wave lately, that I just had to get in on the action! There’s just something about a recipe that includes “batter” in the name, that immediately triggers a Pavlov response in me!

If you follow me on Twitter, then you’ve already gotten a sneak peek at the my morning bowl of celebratory goodness.

Is it my birthday? No.

Then what’s the special occasion you ask? Let me answer that question with this question: Is there really an occasion needed for indulging in a little childhood-reminiscent sprinkle lovin? I didn’t think so!

Cake Batter Protein Oats

by Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli

Prep Time: 2-5 minutes

Cook Time: 2-4 minutes

Keywords: microwave breakfast oats sprinkles birthday

Ingredients (Serves 1)

  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/8 cup oat bran
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 banana, sliced thin
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 2 tablespoons yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • handful of sprinkles

Instructions

1. Combine oats, oat bran, milk, and water in a pot over medium-high heat.
2. Once the mixture starts to boil, add banana slices and whisk briskly until banana “melts” into the oats.
3. Add protein powder, cake mix, and vanilla extract and continue cooking until it reaches your desired consistency (1-2 minutes for soupy oats, 3-4 minutes for thick oats).

Then add a few more sprinkles…you know, for good measure!

Special thanks to Mrs. Betty Crocker for helping create this birthday wish bowl!

Little FYI: Not all cake mixes and sprinkles are created equal. Don’t believe me? Check out the ingredient list the next time you’re in the grocery store…a lot of fillers and they even sneak in some partially hydrogenated oils, aka trans (artery clogging) fat.

I’ve found that the gluten-free mixes are the most legit with only a handful of ingredients.

Betty Crocker Gluten Free Cake Mix
Ingredients: Rice Flour, Sugar, Potato Starch, Leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, monocalcium phosphate), Xanthan Gum, Salt

Everything in moderation is key…so don’t think I’m telling you that you HAVE to go out and by special ingredients for this. Use what you have on hand, but just know that there ARE alternatives out there! Besides, this is FAR too tasty to wait until the next trip to the store! 😉

So now that you have an opened box of cake mix, what in the world do you do with the rest? Well, besides making more bowls of cake batter oats, why not try a few of Jessica’s recipes:

Cake Batter Pancakes
Cake Batter Crispy Treats
Cake Batter Chocolate Bark (Love!), or even
Cake Batter Cinnamon Rolls

And while you’re at it, how about whipping up Katie’s Cake Batter Milkshake?

Ha! Now I have that song in my head!

What’s your favorite cake flavor?
I LOVE anything with almond extract in it!

Icing or no icing?
Usually I’m a plain cake kind of gal, unless it’s a cool whip type icing…then I’m ALL over it! I have been known to eat that stuff straight out of the container! Haha!

Your breakfast always look so delicious! As stupid as I may sound, I did not know that Betty Crocker makes gluten free cake mixes.

    • Not stupid at all! I only found this one after searching the shelves high and low with an ingredient list that I could pronounce! They hid it over in the organic/natural food section at Kroger!

    • Aww, thank you Carlee!

I used to only be able to find it at Whole Foods, but I lucked up and my local Kroger just started carrying it a couple of months ago! Let me know if you aren’t able to find any…maybe I could send you some? 🙂

  6. That porridge sounds amazing! 🙂 Favourite cake flavour = chocolate. Love chocolate buttercream as icing. Cream cheese icing with carrot cake is good too!

ahh, I need more than a bib to catc my drool here! I have the cake mix, great idea! and sprinkles are MY FAVORITE!

  9. I LOVE making kid/fun flavors into something not so bad for me. I am with you on the cake mixes and well, just about anything gluten free. It’s funny how those items have the more recognizable ingredients. I am more of a plain cake lover…mostly angel food cake, but I LOVE seven minute icing…I could bathe in the stuff it’s so good. Have a great day Heather. I hope those gorgeous oats fuel you through more packing!

  10. This seriously looks like a fluffy cake in a bowl, yum! I love the sprinkles. So much fun color 🙂

  11. Amanda says:

Oh my gosh, that looks delish! I’m saving my appetite for brunch this afternoon, and your post totally made that task extra difficult! Sprinkles make everything better!

  12. SO SMART! i was gna ask how you got the cake flavor and then putting cake batter in- GENIUS!!! i LOVE vanilla everything!!!!! UM ICINg is the only part i like!

  13. Miri Leigh says:

  14. Anastasia says:

How do you do it?! Every recipe never fails to make me hungry haha. I’ve also added a box of gluten free cake mix to my shopping list! I can’t wait to try these and the pancakes out.

  15. I definitely could have done with a bib!
I think my favourite cake at the moment is coconut and it’s got to be iced for full effect! I love cream cheese “buttercream” but there’s this chocolate icing that I’ve made from heating evaporated milk with cocoa powder, icing sugar and vanilla – and I don’t think I can make it again; it’s LETHAL! I was surprised any made its way on to the cake after I got stuck in with the spoon … 🙂

  16. Lee says:

And some sneak in beef fat! I am still shocked at that.

  17. Sarah says:

oh wow – so glad i found you through jenn. that girl has good taste in blogs! 🙂 and now you’re my favorite because this was the first post of yours that i read! anyone who makes such delicious oats must be pretty awesome.

  18. Jenny says:

I love a good vanilla/chocolate mixture of cake. And I cannot say no to icing! Do you taste the cake mix in the oats? I’ve seen a few blogs where the taste isn’t so evident. They are definitely mouth watering material!

    • Yes! You can definitely taste the cake! I actually started out with only 1 tablespoon of cake mix, but after a taste test, decided it needed a little more. I also think that the vanilla protein powder helps give it that extra sweetness to go along with the cakey flavor.

Nothing more disappointing than a cake batter recipe that doesn’t even taste like cake!

  19. Damn it, I need to get some sprinkles because all of these sprinkles all over the blogosphere are just so festive and cute!! I’ve been meaning to check out one of those GF cake mixes too, so happy about that ingredients list!! 🙂

    • Haha! I know…I went out and bought these after seeing Katie’s shake recipe! I still need to try that one!

It’s funny, I bought this mix a few months ago and have only used it by the spoonful…wonder how the actual cake tastes? 😉

I love it! I want it. NOW!

    🙂

  23. I feel the same way when I hear the word ‘batter’ 🙂 I can’t choose a favorite cake flavor- I had three slices of cake last night because I had to try each flavor! That being said, I will take frosting over cake any day. TEAM FROSTING!

  24. lisa says:

this looks delicious! def wanna try it 🙂

  25. Sarah says:

AHH! I have been adding sprinkles to my oats for weeks and I even put cake mix in my pancakes a few days ago I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I HAVENT ADDED IT TO MY OATMEAL!
Thanks for tomorrows wonderful breakfast in advance 😀

I made some cake batter crispy treats and had a mostly full bag of cake mix left and decided I wanted to try mixing some into my oats. I did an internet search b/c every time I think of something new, I discover it’s already been done and much better than I would have done on my own. I’m so glad I found you through the Google search b/c I love your blog! I made your recipe for the oats and thought it was really yummy! Thanks!

    • Oh yay! I’m so glad you found me! You know, me and my boy Google go waaaaay back! He totally owed me one! 😉
