Finally Friday

T…G…I….freakin’ eFFFFFFFFFFF!

Sorry I went MIA on you guys yesterday, but after a week and a half of averaging 5 hours of sleep, it has finally caught up to me. I actually called in sick to work Wednesday night because I just couldn’t take one more day.

Unfortunately, my stomach has decided to act in a state or rebellion in response to my zombie status and for the last few days, I’ve been an absolute MESS! All I can say is that I am SO glad it’s Friday…I have a massage scheduled this morning and after that I plan to take Benedryl veg out for the entire weekend!

Banana Almond Crunch

And maybe…just maybe I can talk my tummy into a bowl of this!

Banana Almond Crunch Oats

Whenever I have a bowl of oats, I HAVE to have some sort of protein punch…otherwise I’ll be chewing my arm off in an hour or so. One serving of TVP (textured vegetable protein) provides 12 grams of protein…which is more than a whole egg! And of course vegan too…if your into that! šŸ˜‰

Of course for this recipe, you can always just add more oats instead of the TVP. It won’t be as strange, but I promise, still good! šŸ˜‰ Just make sure to add the whipped banana because that is the KEY to the creamy sweet consistency!

Banana Almond Crunch Oats Bite

But if you forget the honey, I’ll just cry!

C’mon…I’m already stressed to the max, do you really want that on your conscience?? šŸ˜‰

Strange But Good S2TTNow head on over to Sprint 2 the Table and see what everyone else cooked up this week!

What are your plans for the weekend?

Anyone got a good natural recipe for a self-induced coma…that doesn’t require a mallet? šŸ˜‰

  1. I’ve never had TVP before but this looks good!

I feel your pain on the sleep thing! Those tablets the naturopath gave me were working a treat but this week my sleep has been so off its not funny.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, I’m sorry to hear that, Jan! How are you feeling now? Is it starting to balance out?

      • Yeah it is getting better again. I saw the naturopath again and she said on sleepless nights to just up my dose of the tablets as they are all natural so you don’t feel groggy on them and they’ve definitely helped me.

  2. Hope you’re okay, lovely lady! There’s nothing worse than feeling sick šŸ™

Have you tried lavender oil or a heat pack for helping you sleep?

This weekend I’m having friends over for dinner so I shall be cooking up a storm! And of course, spoiling my mum on Sunday! We had flowers sent to Jesse’s Mum as well, so we’re hoping we get a call from her! šŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you so much Kristy! It’s definitely been a rough couple of weeks, but I’m finally starting to feel a bit normal again.

And you JUST reminded me that I have some lavender oil! Hmm, what do you think is the best way to use it? I was thinking of maybe soaking a warm washcloth in a mix of water and oil and laying it on my face before bed?

  3. I’ve never tried TVP and to be honest the sound of it kinda weirds me out… But I’ll still give it a shot šŸ˜‰ This weekend we’re headed up to Boston and I CANNOT WAIT!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It totally weirded me out at first too! I actually had it in my cupboard for almost a whole year before I used it for the first time! Haha! Definitely worth a try though! Ohh, I hope you had fun on your trip!! Off to check in with you now! šŸ˜€

  4. Short, simple and sweet…literally with the addition of whipped bananas.
I hope you have a great and RELAXING weekend and get caught up on some sleep, stat. Well maybe after your massage. You don’t want to miss that.

  5. Fran@BCDC says:

I swear, Heather, I can smell this as I look at the photos! It looks delicious, sounds disgustingly healthy and protein-y (I’ve got to find that darned TVP!) and I like that you are standing firm on the honey NOT being optional! Rest up and feel better soon, Sweetie!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well, I promise it’s 100% delicious and NOT disgustingly healthy and protein-y! šŸ˜‰ You actually can’t even tell it’s not just oats in the bowl! And oh my gosh, I can’t believe I went so long thinking honey wasn’t “worth the calories”…I swear a small drizzle takes oats to a whole new level of yum!!

  6. I still haven’t purchased TVP! Ahhhh! I dunno why I keep putting it off.

    Happy Friday!

  7. Aren’t TVP oats the best thing ever?! I think that’s the top recipe that came out of my competition diet. Mostly because it means I get to eat more. Bwhahaha! Can’t wait to try this version.

Hope you feel better soon!!! Drink kombucha.

  8. Rach says:

Haha! I love that you say that the toppings aren’t optional. šŸ˜‰ It looks good so I understand why, though! And hey, get some rest this weekend!

  9. Jessie says:

Oh no! Get some rest. I dont like hearing that your not feeling 100% šŸ™ šŸ™

  10. I’ve never seen NOT OPTIONAL listed in the ingredients list for something before! Haha. That’s awesome.

Not so awesome that you aren’t feeling very good though. Take a hot bath and drink lots of peppermint/ginger tea. That always makes me feel better! Either way though, keep on making the delicious, warming comfort food. The TVP oats look amazing!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, thank you SO much Madison! I have definitely been putting down some peppermint tea for sure, but thankfully…with the help of my old pal Benny (Benedryl)…I’ve been able to catch up on some sleep after that relaxing massage and am finally starting to feel like myself again! Yay! šŸ˜€

  11. Mmmm I love a good banana-y oatmeal. Like the twist on it too. Hope you feel better!

  12. I don’t have TVP and I seriously cannot buy one more thing because my cupboards are about to explode, but I bet this would still be awesome just using oats. I love banana oatmeal!

I hope you get some rest and feel better soon!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh girl, I totally feel ya on the bursting cupboards! ONE of these days I’ll make a dent in my insane collection of grains and flours! haha! But yeah, these would still be delicious without the TVP…it’s such a great flavor combo!

  13. Hope you feel better soon and that the massage helps.

Your oats look lovely, right up my street.

Can I ask what TVP is? Not heard of it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

TVP is textured vegetable protein. It’s made from defatted soy flour and looks kinda like crunchy granola (though it doesn’t have a taste really on it’s own). You can use it in so many different ways to amp up the protein in veggie-based meals just by rehydrating it…either like I did here with the oats or you can let it soak in some liquid before baking with it. The first recipe I ever tried was Laura’s chickenless nuggets and they were amazing! Great texture and since she’s the QUEEN of spice combos, FULL of flavor! http://www.sprint2thetable.com/2012/08/chick-less-nuggets/

You can find it at most health food stores like Whole Foods or you can get it online (Bob’s Redmill makes one). šŸ™‚

  14. Hi Heather. SOOOOO glad you are able to get some R&R this weekend and hope you are back to 100% VERY soon!!! Sending a big electronic hug your way!!!

  15. Gosh darn it, I have to get those darn TVP.

Okay that sentence sounded very angry. Let’s try that again.

Oh man, I need to buy some TVP already. All you guys keep talking about it and I keep drooling but my silly forgetful self keeps…. forgetting. 0:-)

    Sigh. Looks amazing!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! Girl, you crack me up! Next time you head to the store…make a list…TVP and something for your early onset Alzheimer’s! I hear Ginko is really good! šŸ˜‰

  16. Kim says:

Oh I know the feeling of living on only a few hours of sleep a night… or day. working nights is so difficult. Enjoy your massage and veg out! šŸ™‚

  17. I haven’t tried Tvp but seeing some recipes on sprint to the table and this really makes me want to try it! I hope you have a nice relaxing weekend!

  18. kolya says:

Love TVP and I eat it crunch and dry sometimes….it really is good though I”ve heard conflicting info about how healthy it is. Blah…still lovin it lately (:

  19. I hope you get some rest and feel better soon!
That bowl of oats looks delish! I’ve never had TVP before but it sounds interesting!

  20. I don’t have much on the agenda for this weekend either…so needed, considering that last weekend was busy, and I managed to get both a puppy and a job this week. So yea, I need sleep in the worst way!

  21. Emily says:

TVP in oats?! I’ve never even considered doing that before…hmmm…I’ll have to give it a go!
I hope you’re feeling better, lady! Take it easy this weekend. (:

  22. I hope you’re feeling better! I know that you just made my day simply by posting that recipe. I am home from college now, so I HAVE ACCESS TO A FREAKIN’ KITCHEN! I’ll be sure to tag you in the post when I create one of your divine recipes. šŸ™‚

  23. Purelytwins says:

hope you get some rest and start to feel better šŸ™‚

  24. Carly says:

this flavor combo reminds me of my FAVORITE honey almond crunch kashi:) I can’t wait til I get home to catch up on sleep. Cause you know,…I got all night to pack and finals were just rough! haha. enjoy your massage! i know im jealous;)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, hope you got some rest pretty girl!! Congratulations on finishing up with school! Are you taking the summer off?

      • Carly says:

Thanks; yeah I am actually! But I’m going to India for the month of June:) Hopefully I will be able to update my old blog with pics and ramblings. Until then, I’m just enjoying some sleep, downton abbey and good eats!

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Sounds good to me…especially with Downton Abbey! I’ve GOT to get my hands on the latest season…I’m going through withdrawals! Lol

That is so awesome that you’re going to India…I think I knew that…it’s for school, right? Can’t wait to hear about all your adventures! šŸ˜€

  25. Hmmm . . . a self-induced coma . . . how about a few glasses of wine?!? šŸ˜‰ That usually does me in pretty quickly on a Friday evening after working all week.

Good idea with adding TVP–I’ve actually never cooked with it before. To add extra protein to my morning oatbran, I always add about 1/3 c. of egg whites to the bowl, with almond milk, chia seeds and cinnamon. I cook all that together, and afterwards add some fruit of some sort and a nut butter topping. It does a great job of filling me up for awhile! Enjoy that massage!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmmm, I might have to try that…just look the other way as I’m tipping a glass up after my shift…at 7 in the morning! Haha!

And oh yeah, I’m a HUGE fan of egg white oats! I love how it makes them extra creamy, but I really like the TVP for more of a “hearty” bowl! šŸ˜€

  26. I’m sorry you haven’t been feeling well. I hope you get the rest you need this weekend!

  27. FEEL BETTER & REST! This stuff can wait! šŸ™‚

  28. Nom nom nom nom nom…
    Honey drizzle me please šŸ™‚

  29. Aww, girl! I sure hope you were able to get a (mallet-free) MEGA dose of R&R over the weekend. I want to see your healthy face in Utah! (SO SO excited, by the way!).

I’ve seen TVP at Whole Foods, but I’m a total chicken, and haven’t mustered up the nerve to try it. Am I missing out big time? Oats, on the other hand, I KNOW, and banana-infused oats I LOVE. In other words, everything else about this recipe screams “eat me now!”

Sending hugs and healing vibes your way! <3 xoxo

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks love! I did manage to get one good day of rest in there…along with a Benedryl-induced sleep coma on Monday so I’m starting to feel a bit better…one more day like that and I think I’ll be set! Thank goodness because I can’t WAIT until this Friday! So excited to finally meet you!

I was nervous to try TVP at first too…I had no CLUE what to do with it, but after making Laura’s chicken-less nuggets http://www.sprint2thetable.com/2012/08/chick-less-nuggets/ (super easy by the way), I started playing around a bit more and then thought what the heck and threw them in some oats! Lol They really have no taste at all and you can’t even tell a difference in the texture of the oats, but in chicken nugget(less) form, the texture is incredible…flakey and crumbly and perfect! Definitely worth a try…and they’re pretty cheap if you get them from the bulk section! šŸ˜€

  30. Looks delish! I must try it… minus the TVP šŸ™‚

  31. Mmmmmm….honey….

I was in a serious “cinnamon and honey on EVERYTHING” phase a few weeks ago. Now I want BUTTER and cinnamon and honey on everything. šŸ˜‰ [No butter in the house, so I can’t really do anything with that. Butter extract?]

I haven’t ‘whipped’ a banana into my oatmeal, because for some reason I thought it required electricity. Do you really just whisk it (whisk it good)?

Also, new discovery: just a wee bit of ACV if your oats makes them soooooooo smooth and creamy…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, butter extract would have been GREAT in these! Now I’m gonna have to make them again! Lol And yup, it’s just as simple as workin’ that whisk! šŸ˜‰ The heat helps break them down (just make sure they’re sliced thin) so no electricity required! šŸ˜€

I’ve GOT to try the ACV thing now! Have you tried adding baking powder to oats? I’ve heard from a LOT of people that it makes them taste like cookie dough!
