Alright! Sounds like you guys really want to win you some Flax Sprinkles! Keep those entries coming! And if you haven’t entered the giveaway yet…do so HERE!
How is everyone’s Saturday shaping up? We <- because I obviously talk about myself in the plural third person (I think it’s a southern thing) started out having some pretty rough storms this morning. Lightning, thunder, raindrops the size of Mac trucks…you know how mother nature rolls (haha! Get it? Like thunder?)!
So, even though the weather DID turn around a few hours ago and the sun finally started to poke out from behind the clouds, I am in full on lounge-mode now!
and indulge in the newest of my strange food combos!
Apricot preserves and garlic mustard…
together for one pretzel bite of deliciousness
Oh, mmm, wow! I just added sunflower seed butter to the mix and it totally rocks!
Yep! I’m perfectly content with carving a dent into the couch cushion in the shape of my rear for the rest of the evening. The chores can wait…that’s why God made the weekend TWO days long! But wait, now I’m all out of pretzels!
Hmm, looks like I’ll have to dig something out of my “presents” that Chelsey sent me for our blogger swap last week!
Mmm…almond brittle dark chocolate!
What are you up to today?
Do you do all the housework on one day or spread it out over the weekend?
Hey guys! Happy Friday! I LOVED reading all the comments you guys left me after yesterday’s post! Seems like we all have the same thought when it comes to modern medicine versus alternative medicine. Oh and for the record, there were no unwanted reactions to last night’s dinner…just a full belly! I guess chopping up the strawberries really DOES make a difference! 😉
Anywho, onto some excitement that doesn’t elevate your blood pressure! I’ve got something fun in store for you guys today!
After my WIAW post, I got a few comments about the flaxmilk I used in my oats. Well, as foreign as it may sound, look at what you can now find at your local Walmart!
Flaxmilk!
With some pretty impressive nutritionals!
It’s also available in vanilla. I bought the Flax USA Flaxmilk in the original flavor since it was lower in sugar (vanilla has 11g) and because I’m a bit sensitive to sweeteners. Straight up, I actually thought it was still too sweet for my taste, but I love the sweetness it lends to my oats and the price is comparable to other options like soy and almond milk.
Speaking of flax, a couple of months ago, after seeing them featured on Jenn’s blog, Flax USA sent me some of their Flax Sprinkles to try and review here on the blog.
When I first learned about flax seed, I was in college working at a supplement store. The majority of customers who purchased flax were older, and either menopausal or with a history of cardiovascular disease. It wasn’t long before I dubbed flax as the “old people supplement.” Although flax is a helpful addition to the diet of any age group, I didn’t discover this until many years later.
The next time I encountered flax seed was after my discovery of healthy living blogs last summer.
“You me to tell me that I can use that “old people supplement” as a replacement for eggs in baking?! Cool!”
“And it doesn’t taste funky” (Why is it that we always think anything good for you will taste bad?)
I first started using it in my baking and was surprised at how well a “flax egg” worked (1 tablespoon of ground flax mixed with 3 tablespoons water and allowed to set makes a “gluey” substance similar to the consistency of an egg) so I later moved on to experimenting with it in my oats and smoothies and immediately, I became a fan! Hello superfood!
The following is taken from the Flax USA website:
“…flax seed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Studies have found soluble fiber can help to lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar levels.
Two thirds of the fiber in flax seed is insoluble – this aids in digestion by increasing bulk and reducing the time that waste remains in the body [and] is helpful in maintaining regularity and protecting against colon cancer”
I have to say that there aren’t many things out there that are THIS good for you that you don’t have to force yourself to take! Flax sprinkles provide 4g of dietary fiber in only one serving!
Along with being an excellent source of fiber, flax also contains a great amount of alpha linolenic acid – an essential fatty acid that is all around good for the body (think heart disease and stroke fighting, immune boosting powerhouse!)
So what did I think of the flax sprinkles? I love them! They don’t have to be refrigerated like most ground flax seed so I can keep them out on the counter and grab them whenever I want to add a little “flax fusion” to my eats!
And well, you didn’t think I was gonna keep all three of those containers for myself did you? I’m happy to announce that Flax USA has willingly provided me with two extra Flax Sprinkles for two lucky Kiss My Broccoli readers!*
*I was sent Flax Sprinkles for free by Flax USA and was not compensated for this review. All of the information provided in this post is of my own personal opinion.

Well, as you can see Web MD refers to it as a type of skin reaction caused my a “foreign substance”.
Enter “foreign substance”
Yep, that’s right, after the other night’s DELICIOUS bowl of strawberry ‘n cream oats, my upper lip decided to rebel against me…or technically speaking, my antibodies reacted in a way that was not much appreciated.
I woke up the next morning with a weird sensation in my upper lip. It felt a little swollen, chapped, and dry. While driving to work, I noticed a slight burning sensation and a little discomfort so when I got to the hospital, I checked in at employee health to see what the deal was.
Knowing that I have an allergy to kiwi (lovingly referred to as oral allergy syndrome where my lips and throat swell and itch), I was worried that I was having some sort of similar response to something I ate but for the life of me couldn’t figure out what it was. When I explained everything to the doctor, she asked me if I had had any fruit in the last 24 hours…
Um, any fruit like my beloved strawberries?
“That’s it!” she said.
🙁
Then she proceeded to write me a prescription for a steroid and load me up with samples of ibuprofen and Zyrtec.
Can I have a little aside for a moment? Of course I can…this is MY blog isn’t it?! 😉
Ok, so for years I’ve been living life along with the other millions upon millions of people who believe that modern medicine is the only option out there. Well, that is NOT my belief anymore. While I understand that there is a time and place for modern medicine (instances of severe trauma and/or other life threatening occurrences), it has come to my attention in the last few months how much it seems that the world relies on modern medicine as an answer to everything. I’ve also found that it is hard to have such a change in beliefs when you work in a modern day hospital.
Everyday I see people come into the hospital toting their never-ending list of medications and/or the actual medications themselves in their handy dandy Walmart bag and it just makes me wonder how much of it is actually necessary.
I understand the need for some medications…I just think our society relies on them too heavily. I mean think about it. Let’s say “Susie” was just diagnosed with diabetes. Now most doctors will glaze over the fact that perhaps a little diet and exercise would help, but really push the need for pharmaceutical drugs. But let’s say, for entertainment purposes, that “Susie” decided to start walking everyday and eating more well-rounded meals full of fiber and low-glycemic carbohydrates and miraculously her blood sugar began to stay at a more manageable level.
Oh my gosh, I could talk ALL day about this subject, but I’ll try to stay focussed on what got me here!
I took the prescription and the samples and smiled as I thanked the doctor and went back to work. Then I threw the medical paraphernalia in my purse and pulled out some cocoa butter lip balm. The way I figured it was this: if it gets any worse, I’ll take the meds.
And you know what? I DIDN’T get any worse. It took all day of applying and REapplying lip balm to keep my lips from getting dry (obviously avoiding the “m” word here), but, other than it being a little annoying, by the time I woke up this morning, I was perfectly fine.
Overmedicating. Suppressing the body’s natural responses.
That is what I’m NOT okay with!
The doctor told me that I’m not necessarily allergic to strawberries, but that I should limit my intake and rather than biting into them, (where my lips will touch the skin of the berry) that I should maybe chop them up or even throw the whole berry in my mouth.
So, that being said, allow me to introduce you to tonight’s dinner:
Hey, just following the doctor’s orders! 😉
They ARE chopped!
Sourdough bread French toast coated with Mighty Maple*
with a “spattering” of fresh berries
and a drizzle of maple syrup!
*Mighty Maple has officially redeemed itself! Word of advice: this peanut butter was meant to be served warm!
♥ Oh MM, I take back all those nasty things I said!
I didn’t mean it…really I didn’t! ♥
And don’t worry, I have meds if I NEED them! 😉
Dare I ask? What are your views on modern vs. alternative medicine?
Do you have any food allergies? How do you deal? I can’t eat kiwi at all. The last few times I had it, my reaction seemed to get worse and worse. But I do know some people who seem to know just how much of the “illegal substance” they can tolerate before having a reaction. Ugh, wish that were the case for me! I miss my little green fuzz balls!
