Flax Friday

Hey guys! Happy Friday! I LOVED reading all the comments you guys left me after yesterday’s post! Seems like we all have the same thought when it comes to modern medicine versus alternative medicine. Oh and for the record, there were no unwanted reactions to last night’s dinner…just a full belly! I guess chopping up the strawberries really DOES make a difference! πŸ˜‰

Anywho, onto some excitement that doesn’t elevate your blood pressure! I’ve got something fun in store for you guys today!

After my WIAW post, I got a few comments about the flaxmilk I used in my oats. Well, as foreign as it may sound, look at what you can now find at your local Walmart!

Flaxmilk!

With some pretty impressive nutritionals!

It’s also available in vanilla. I bought the Flax USA Flaxmilk in the original flavor since it was lower in sugar (vanilla has 11g) and because I’m a bit sensitive to sweeteners. Straight up, I actually thought it was still too sweet for my taste, but I love the sweetness it lends to my oats and the price is comparable to other options like soy and almond milk.

Speaking of flax, a couple of months ago, after seeing them featured on Jenn’s blog, Flax USA sent me some of their Flax Sprinkles to try and review here on the blog.

When I first learned about flax seed, I was in college working at a supplement store. The majority of customers who purchased flax were older, and either menopausal or with a history of cardiovascular disease. It wasn’t long before I dubbed flax as the “old people supplement.” Although flax is a helpful addition to the diet of any age group, I didn’t discover this until many years later.

The next time I encountered flax seed was after my discovery of healthy living blogs last summer.

“You me to tell me that I can use that “old people supplement” as a replacement for eggs in baking?! Cool!”

“And it doesn’t taste funky” (Why is it that we always think anything good for you will taste bad?)

I first started using it in my baking and was surprised at how well a “flax egg”Β workedΒ (1 tablespoon of ground flax mixed with 3 tablespoons water and allowed to set makes a “gluey” substance similar to the consistency of an egg) so I later moved on to experimenting with it in my oats and smoothies and immediately, I became a fan! Hello superfood!

The following is taken from the Flax USA website:

“…flax seed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Studies have found soluble fiber can help to lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar levels.

Two thirds of the fiber in flax seed is insoluble – this aids in digestion by increasing bulk and reducing the time that waste remains in the body [and] is helpful in maintaining regularity and protecting against colon cancer”

I have to say that there aren’t Β many things out there that are THIS good for you that you don’t have to force yourself to take! Flax sprinkles provide 4g of dietary fiber in only one serving!

Along with being an excellent source of fiber, flax also contains a great amount of alpha linolenic acid – an essential fatty acid that is all around good for the body (think heart disease and stroke fighting, immune boosting powerhouse!)

So what did I think of the flax sprinkles? I love them! They don’t have to be refrigerated like most ground flax seed so I can keep them out on the counter and grab them whenever I want to add a little “flax fusion” to my eats!

In fruit and yogurt parfaits…

In a nice big bowl of oats…

Or blended into my favorite smoothie!

And well, you didn’t think I was gonna keep all three of those containers for myself did you? I’m happy to announce that Flax USA has willingly provided me with two extra Flax Sprinkles for two lucky Kiss My Broccoli readers!*

*I was sent Flax Sprinkles for free by Flax USA and was not compensated for this review. All of the information provided in this post is of my own personal opinion.

It’s Giveaway Time!

They are the perfect addition on top of oatmeal πŸ™‚ I always thought flax would taste funky too. The first time I heard of it was from my parents, who take a flaxseed oil vitamin, so I didn’t even know what it looked like in food-form!

  47. I’ve never heard of flax milk!! I’m a little surprised that it doesn’t have any protein or fiber per serving though?!? Whatsupwiththat!!

I use flax A LOT in baking because I’m a ‘dough eater’! Using the flax egg instead of a real egg makes me feel better about eating the raw dough πŸ™‚

I also like it in oats, smoothies, pancakes and sprinkled on fruit!

P.S. My Google Reader is finally under 100 (Thought you would appreciate that since both of ours was over 300 a few weeks ago!!) Wooo Hoo!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, I know at Kroger, you can find them in the natural food section along with the flours and other baking items. To tell you the truth, I’ve never purchased mine from WF, but I would imagine they’d be near the baking stuff as well.

  59. Robyn :) says:

I LIKED you on Facebook πŸ™‚

  60. Robyn :) says:

I Liked Flax USA on Facebook πŸ™‚

  61. Emily says:

I use flax ALL the time, typically in my oatmeal – it definitely bumps up the volume and creaminess factor. I also use it in baking as an egg replacer… but only when we’re out of real eggs πŸ˜›

oh and a quick FYI, all ground flax should be refrigerated regardless of the packaging – the omega-3s and omega-6s deteriorate at room temp as soon as the seeds are ground!

  62. Jenny Powell says:

I love flax in baked goods especially banana bread and pancakes!

  63. Jenny says:

    I liked you on FB

  64. miri leigh says:

I love flax in all kinds of baked goods!

  65. I hate walmart.
but I want to try this milk (read: REALLY BAD)
which one wins…stay tuned to see whether mom will drive me to the good ol’ superstore since I’m 20 and still don’t drive.
I know, I’m on the edge of my seat too πŸ˜‰

  66. I do a lot of flax-egging when I make cookies & such, particularly at school because I don’t want to bother buying real eggs :))

Though lately I’ve taken to putting some in yogurt! It’s delish. I didn’t know flaxmilk existed! It sounds delish though.

I’d love to have flax to use for flax eggs in baking. So many bloggers use it and I’m not a competent enough baker to make any modifications to recipes without destroying the final product so I definitely miss out on some amazing treats!

I am a new subscriber and just wanted to say hello. Hello πŸ˜‰

I am a HUGE Overnight Oats eater and LOVE to experiment with my toppings. Also Vegetarian/Almost Vegan (that dang yummy greek yogurt gets me everytime!) I love to experiment with new ways to get all my nutritional needs. This would be great! I have never tried the flakes, have only grinded my own seeds. I would love the opportunity to try these.

Excited for more e-mails and posts.
