Shakespeare & Oats

As promised in yesterday’s post, I have a delicious recipe for you guys today!

But first, allow me a brief soliloquy…

“To oat, or not to oat…that IS this morning’s question.
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to hear
The early grumblings and pains of indulgent oatmeal
Or to take eggs to the carbohydrates
And by whisking, create them.”

Shakespeare botchification brought to you by the endorphin rush after diving head first into this delicious bowl of oats.

If you’ve ever been leery of the whole egg white oats, let me tell you right now that I was once a skeptic myself. After a very, VERY bad judgement call involving egg whites, oats, and a microwave, I thought I was scarred for life.

Alas, mighty microwave…you do not serve me well. But thou art not the only appliance capable of preparing my breakfast.

“A stove! A stove! My kitchen for a stove!”

Super Simple Egg White Oatmeal

by Heather Powers

Prep Time: N/A

Cook Time: 6-7 minutes

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 1/3-1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 egg whites, whisked
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon flavored extract (vanilla, almond, maple, etc.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

1. Combine oats and water in a small pot and heat to medium-high heat.
2. Once it comes to a boil (about 3-4 minutes), add the egg whites and whisk quickly until the egg starts to set.
3. Allow to cook another 3-4 minutes, whisking a couple of times to break up the egg whites.
4. Stir in cocoa (if using), extract, and spices.
5. Serve with fresh fruit and a good drizzle of your favorite nut butter!

Now, don’t let the cooking method steer away all you instant gratification breakfast eaters out there.

“Oh swear not by the box, the fickle box, the inconstant box that is guaranteed to give you lumpy bits and interesting (but not in a good way) air pockets in your bowl.”

You can have an ALL NATURAL, protein packed bowl of oats in just a few more minutes than it takes to microwave. The egg whites blend right in and create the lightest and fluffiest texture…no lumps, no bumps, no “what the heck?!” moments in this bowl.

No, in this case, the course of true love has never run smoother…

A midsummer night’s morning’s dream! 😉

  1. This may have been the cutest thing EVER – and actually seems easy enough that even I could make! And probably will. 😉

  2. After eyeing off your egg white oats on instagram, I had to have a crack this morning and they turned out pretty darn good even though I hadn’t read your awesome instructions yet 🙂 Thanks for being so hilarious, your blog posts always brighten up my day!

Have a “crack” at it? LOVE it! Lol

So glad you now know of the wonderful world of egg white oats! I’ve had them so many times in the last couple of weeks, I’m surprised I’m not sick of them yet!

And ALWAYS glad to know I’m perking up your day! Love making people smile!

  3. Lizzi says:

Ahhhh awesome! I’ve been wanting to try egg white oats for a while now 🙂 These look seriously bitchin’!

  4. Hahaha you crack me up Heather! 😀 I’m glad I’m not the only one who makes up new words to plays/songs/poems. The other day I made up a song called Busy Busy Busy to the tune of Money Money Money by ABBA haha.

Also I love egg white oats! I’ve never added chocolate to mine though. That’s something I’ve got to try!

Nice! I also have a couple of lines I like to call “Washing Dishes” to the tune of Fergalicious! LOL!

You HAVE to try it with cocoa…SO good, especially with the sweetness from the fresh berries!

  5. I love it! The botched shakespeare and the oats (and you!). I’m going to have to try egg white oats.

  6. PB&Jenny says:

Just when I thought it wasn’t possible to love you anymore, you’ve incorporated shakespeare and oats, two of my absolute favorite things 🙂

  7. I’m liking the way you made these oats! I’ve made egg white oats before, but yours look MUCH better.

  8. Marie-Sophie says:

Applause, applause! 🙂 Thanks for the recipe! That’s going on my weekend list! I like to make myself a cup of coffee and then enjoy the whole “making a new recipe” thing. Yay!

  9. PS if you don’t mind me asking … what do you use to get your recipes to do this? I’ve been wanting to have something like this for recipes and tutorials.

  10. Carly says:

You should try whipping up the egg whites first (like to the point of white peaks) and then whisk them in (you have to cook them a bit longer but it’s worth it). I got the idea from Julie (again, haha she’s a genius when it comes to oats) but you should check out her link http://www.juliegolean.com/2010/10/mess.html

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmmm, interesting. I guess it makes them even thicker? I’ll have to give it a try! Thanks girlie!

And I seriously need to check out Julie’s blog more often…Instagram spoils me and makes me feel like I’m reading blogs when really I’m not!
