What I Ate in St. Louis

Hey guys!

As I promised in yesterday’s recap post, today is ALL about the eats…

Delicious, St. Louis eats!

Join me in shouting a big THANK YOU to Jenn for hosting our favorite weekly celebration…and once you finish drooling over what I’ve got to show you, head on over to Peas & Crayons and check out all the other delicious link ups! πŸ˜‰

Like I said, I got in to St. Louis on Friday night…a bit late due to some traffic…so I was grateful that Eric had planned on a quiet night in. Before my trip, he had mentioned the famous St. Louis-style pizza that was a must-try so when he called and asked what I was in the mood for for dinner, there was absolutely no thinking required!

He ordered a deluxe from the must-eat pizza place in St. Louis…Imo’s Pizza!

Sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper, BACON, and cheese!

Check out that bacon would ya! It’s like a whole strip!

That was my plate…times THREE! πŸ˜€

Had I known he had plans for dessert, I totally wouldn’t have had that third slice, but hey, there’s ALWAYS room for ice cream, right?

Or should I say frozen custard, or “concrete” as everybody calls them!

Ted DrewesΒ was just like I expected but I was a bit overwhelmed with all their choices! In the end decided to go with the “Southern Delight” (vanilla custard with pralines and butterscotch) while Eric went with the “Moolicious” (marshmallow custard with Oreos)

His was better! πŸ˜‰

The next morning, after we had drooled over everything at the farmer’s market, Eric decided to cash in his one request of my visit…

Pancakes!

I’m sorry, make those Pumpkin PECAN Pancakes!

Recipe coming Sunday!…Oh the agony of having to wait SO long!!! πŸ˜‰

Β After a LONG day of walking around the art museum and the zoo (all I have to say is it’s a good thing I had an emergency stash of bars in my bag), we went to one of Eric’s favorite sushi places,Β Nippon Tei,Β for dinner.

We started out with a FREE edamame appetizer, miso soup,
and this seriously impressive house salad!

With cucumber, zucchini, peppers, carrots, and pickled radish with ginger dressing.

That came in the CUTEST little cup!

Eric ordered two rolls, an eel and a Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, they skimped on the eel…it was mostly rice. πŸ™

I contemplated my options and decided to go with one BIG roll…the Zen!

Crab, asparagus, and lobster topped with either salmon, tuna, white fish, or avocado, and lemon slices and roe.

The lemon slices were the perfect touch!

It was Heaven on a plate!Β

Later that night, we went out for a few drinks.

I ordered the chocolate martini and loved it but then saw that they had a
PUMPKIN MARTINIΒ and I got super excited!
Well, it ended up tasting AWFUL (sad face) so I traded it in for an espresso martini instead which was just ok.

You win some, you waste 8 bucks onΒ lose some!

After a late night, which involved some SNL and leftover cold pizza noshing (cold pizza is the BEST!), we woke up a bit late on Sunday. While Eric would have been perfectly happy to have another plate of pumpkin pecan pancakes, I felt it was my responsibility to expand his knowledge of pumpkin-flavored breakfasts…

Pumpkin Pie French Toast, anyone?

Recipe coming tomorrow!…Ohhh, I’m killing you aren’t I? πŸ˜‰

After that we were off for our tour of the brewery and our claustrophobic trip to the top of the arch! We were going to head over to Pappy’s for some real St. Louis BBQ, but sadly, we had JUST missed them. We tried a couple of other places, but out of sheer ridiculousness, most everybody was closed at 4pm on Sunday.

Except for Mom’s Deli!

We both got their most popular, Mom’s Special…turkey, ham, and roast beef with lettuce, pickles, onion, tomato, and their house-made thousand island…on whole wheat French bread.

It may not look like much, but this was a pretty ballin’ sandwich!

And the leftover half tasted even better once I got home, popped it under the broiler, and threw some sauerkraut on it! Hmm, reuben/cold cut mashup? πŸ˜‰

Whew! I just made myself hungry!

What’s the best thing you ate during your last vacation?

  1. Heather. I love you. Really. BUT… you could have WARNED me not to read this until I can eat freely again in 1.5 weeks. Custard. Mini-dressing cups. Fancy martinis. French toast. *groan*

  2. i just drooled all over the place.
i mean you had me at sushi, but surprisingly that sub make me go crazy!

do you guys have jimmy johns? because it really made me want jimmy johns.
and now i want ice cream.
    and all of it.
come visit me so we can eat all of that!

Haha! I’m telling you, that homemade dressing was where it was AT! We do have a JJ’s here in town…I’ve only been once and actually wasn’t too impressed. My bread was really hard! :-/

Oh if only I could teleport myself…

  3. Sushi, subs, and salads, oh my! It all looks so tasty! I’m with Debbie above about the sub. I used to go to this place called Blimpie’s every day at lunch when I was in high school, and I miss it so! Especially looking at your delicious sandwich….wah!

  4. Jessie says:

I wonder if the hubs would mind if I caught the next flight to St. Louis?? I want to eat @ every place you mentioned on here. I’m sorry, but I think I would’ve chose the mans custard combination over yours. I mean Marshmallows & oreos together? Ah mouth-watering!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know! If I had seen that one BEFORE choosing mine, I totally would have gotten it! So sad…guess I just need to make another trip then, don’t I? Let me know when you book your flight! πŸ˜‰

  5. Khushboo says:

So much deliciousness although that’s annoying about the martinis! Come to London – I’ll take you for the best espresso martini of your life!! No joke, it’s tastes like a liquid tiramisu….spiked ;)!

  6. Looks like you had a great time, Heather! I love trying out food in a different place!

  7. So much deliciousness all in one weekend. Damn girl, you did good, and now I really am hungry. Must go find some cold pizza…..

  8. Man. You force us to wait that long? πŸ˜€ All of the pumpkiny goodness looks delicious.

And how awesome is that concrete? Reminds me of this little dairy bar around where I live. I’ve never been there, but rumor is that they have a tip-it-over rule. If they tip over your ice cream cup and it moves, then they pitch it and get you a new one. That’s some thick and serious ice cream πŸ™‚

  9. France was the best food vacation for me, but I was not well most of it due to eating cheese. The most amazing cheeses though! It hurt, but it was sooooo worth it.

    I want that custard! YUM!

  10. What an awesome weekend of eats! Your sushi roll looks to die for – I love how it has so many kinds of seafood in it. And Eric’s custard? Yummm! But I think the best looking meal in this post is those pancakes! If you come to Ontario and make me pancakes, you can stay at my place. πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh, I know! I LOVE it when a sushi roll is stuffed as much as this one was! If I wanted mostly rice…I’d order a bowl! Lol

And you got yourself a deal missy! As long as you promise to take me out for sushi! πŸ˜€

  11. Pretty sure I have a separate stomach for dessert – no matter how full I am I can always squeeze it in. πŸ™‚

I’m really looking forward to that pancake recipe! Looks so tasty!

  12. Sunnie@MGN says:

Everything looks delicious, especially those pancakes! You always have the best pancake recipes:)

  13. Kendra says:

Those pancakes and the french toast both look delicious; I can’t wait for the recipes!!:) That house salad at the sushi restaurant looks amazing as well–I do enjoy eating sushi occasionally (vegetarian, of course), though it isn’t one of my absolute FAVORITE foods. When I was on vacation in Washington state over the summer, visiting family, I had some fantastic raw nachos at a food festival–they were incredibly delicious, and I dream of someday eating them again, or perhaps attempting to recreate the recipe (though I doubt that will actually happen:).

    • kissmybroccoli says:

That’s awesome! When I went to California last summer, I had my first raw food experience at Cafe Gratitude and LOVED it! So amazing what they can do with ground nuts and seeds! I ordered the “deep dish pizza” which had the BEST brazil nut ricotta cheese I’ve ever tasted! I can only imagine how tasty those nachos were!

  14. Farrah says:

Oh my, every single thing looks so good! I can’t wait for the french toast recipe. I’ve been really craving them!

  15. Eric Sack says:

Reading this in the morning was the worst idea ever..since you know i’m bad about breakfast!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiic! You’ve GOT to start eating breakfast! Ugh, I should have made you a stockpile of pancakes to freeze before I left! Lol

  16. Ooh can’t wait for pumpkin french toast recipe! I’ve just started experimenting with vegan alternatives!

  17. Kelsey says:

Yum to the sushi! I’ve never had an eel roll before. I’m so boring. I always stick with spicy salmon!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Spicy salmon (or shrimp) is another of my favorites, but the eel….omg! It comes with an “eel sauce” that I swear I could eat by the spoonful! Lol Definitely a must-try if you ever feel a bit frisky! πŸ˜‰

  18. yay for frozen custard! remember when we had it at blend πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Of course! How could I forget our random custard stop on our drunken walk home?! Good times, good times! You’ll have to let us know where we can get it in Utah for Blend 2013…custard parrrrrrtay! Woo!

  19. Now I just really want to go to St. Louis. Mostly for the custard. Which is totally not vegan, but why I carry Lactaid and choose to add “with benefits” to the title.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Lactaid DEFINITELY needed with this! Actually, you might need to take the entire box! I know you’re more sensitive than I am and I took one tablet and STILL ended up with a tummy ache…but it was worth it…kinda! πŸ˜‰

  20. I am legitimately so jealous of all your eats in St. Louis!

  21. milkandspoon says:

Im also going through a mild sushi obsession at the moment – i just cant get enough of it haha. looking forward to seeing your pumpkin pecan pancake recipe mm.

  22. Eating on vacation has seriously got to be one of the best things ever. All of your eats look sooooo tasty, but I’m going to have to say that the frozen custard called out to me the most πŸ˜‰ I’ve never had any ‘concrete’ but I had some Hagen Dazs ice cream with warm caramel syrup and whipped cream on my last vacation, and I swear it still comes back to tempt me in my dreams…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Agreed! Eating out and sightseeing….pretty much equal in my book! πŸ˜‰ I had fun making breakfast for us both days, but I just LOVE trying new places/foods when traveling! The only thing that stinks is when you find something that is like life changing and you have to figure out a way to go back JUST so you can have it again! Haha!

  23. Well now I want sushi and I have a whole fridge full of food to eat before the race this weekend. Dang!

  24. Allie says:

Cold pizza IS the best. Especially for breakfast. Now I miss college…

I would have gone for the praline custard too–marshmallow isn’t usually a flavor that catches my eye, but hey, good is good. And that is some skimpy eel-to-rice ratio there, how would you even taste it?? Although now I’m craving sushi anyway. Darn you, pictures of food at the end of the workday…

Anywho, responded to your comments but going to resay it anyway since I have yet to spend money on my blog so I can do fancy things like e-mail responses to comments and not just send them out into space to be lost and never read, but yes, it would ROCK ALL SORTS OF SOCKS if we are both in ATL over the 10th/11th weekend. Gotta figure out if I can get in some training then too, but it is definitely the plan to be there! Although, seeing as we both live in TN, it’s kinda awesomely hilarious that we’re going to ATL for a meetup πŸ˜€

    • kissmybroccoli says:

      1. Can you believe I hardly had pizza in college? Well unless you count the obscene amounts of Pizza Rolls I consumed (but those were always a “treat”). I was always too poor to afford pizza! Tho I DID always have money for beer…hmm…;)
      2. You couldn’t taste the eel AT ALL! So sad…because eel is my fave!
      3. I am a TOTAL NERD and didn’t even realize (until Laura told me last night) that you live in Nashville!! When you’d mentioned places to eat in Nashville before, for some reason, I just assumed you’d lived there before. I have NO idea WHERE I thought you lived! Lol But hey, maybe if you’re going the same weekend, we could carpool? Save some moolah? Make the 3.5 hour trip a little more exciting? You know, because there’s only so many fireworks/gas stations to amuse you along the way! πŸ˜‰

  25. You are making me want to go on vacation just so I can eat out! Maybe I’ll have to come to Nashville soon!! You game?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Just name the day beautiful! We will eat our way through the city! …plus, it’ll give me an excuse to try the dozen or so restaurants that I keep saying I need to visit! Lol

  26. Katy says:

That sushi looks incredible! I had a seafood Alfredo on my honeymoon a few weeks ago that was amazing! It was the best thing I have eaten in a very long time. πŸ™‚

  27. Yum, all your St. Louis eats look delicious! I just got back from San Francisco for Foodbuzz so of course that food was great. πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, totally jealous! I was supposed to go, but the airline tickets were going to cost me a small fortune! I can only IMAGINE how great the food was!!
