Food for Thought

I consider myself very lucky.

Though I’ve been facing some difficult times lately, I have a TON of support from my family, my friends, and ALL OF YOU!

Just yesterday, I was reminded of how easy it is to have the wind sucked out of your sails…get stuck in your head…and wallow in a kiddie pool full of self-pity. But instead of flapping my arms in a panic and allowing myself to drown, I reached out to a friend, I reread some of the comments from last Monday’s post, and through a few tears, found a renewed sense of purpose.

Sometimes we just need to be reminded of things we already know.

Sometimes we need to feel a bit of empathy.

And sometimes we just need a pep talk.

So today, I thought I’d share a few quotes that helped change my perspective…that made me pause…that filled my cereal bowl with something a little different…some
food for THOUGHT!

Progress not Perfection

Something I said to a friend that I should be saying to myself on a daily basis.

Bridge Hard Times

Katie is wise beyond her years.

Be Proud

A lesson in being kind to yourself from Melissa.

Live Happy

I love Katie for her never-ending glass half-FULL perspective!

Spilled Milk

[original source]

Loved this perspective from reader Gabby.

WeaknessesAnd seriously, Dawn just totally wow-ed me with this one!

I seriously cannot thank you guys enough for all the support and love…I will continue to come back to these and so many other heartfelt comments whenever I find myself without my arm floaties! 😉

What quote or mantra do you turn to when times get rough?

  1. You are just do continually inspiring 🙂

Some beautiful quotes here. I can’t think of any off the top of my head except JFDI which is not exactly the right sentiment of quote for your post but its all my brain will give me!

  2. Isn’t it funny how giving advice to others comes so easy – it’s like the words just flow, but when we try to console ourselves it’s a near-impossible pill to swallow? I had a slight mental breakdown/panic/ego takeover on Sunday and Court was looking at me like I had two heads. He couldn’t understand why I was doing that to myself – and he was right!

When I start feeling overwhelmed, scared, etc I breathe through it and remind myself that it’ll all make sense later on – which, that in itself is also hard to wrap my head around because I want answers now now NOW!!!

Allright, good talk! *skips off to the psych ward*

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Hey, I hear the cookies in the psych ward are CRAZY good! 😉

Yes, it’s always so hard to take our own advice…or see the bigger picture when all the while our subconsciouses are in complete meltdown mode. Sometimes we just have to physically take ourselves out of the stressful environment so that we can refocus, recharge, and really see things for what they are. But it’s always nice to know we’re not alone in this…now about those cookies! Lol

  3. This was such a great idea Heather. Those quotes are so inspiring, and even more so because they are from fellow bloggers!

  4. HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love them all! I have a post going up tomorrow about the process of change & finding out that I am enough.. it has always been a struggle for me & at 55, I am finally getting closer BUT it is a process & we all get there differently ! I am proud of you for taking this time for you!

I read a post the other day about a lady that gained back 10 pounds – she is overcoming an eating disorder. I said to her – NEVER BE ASHAMED!!! It is all a learning process, we are not perfect & that is OK! YOU ARE OK & enough!

  5. Becca says:

So I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and I just wanted to say that even though you might be feeling super down in the dumps, even at your lowest of lows you’re still being inspirational! I consider myself to be almost annoyingly happy most of the time.. but when I hit rock bottom I hit it hard! It’s nice to see how strong you are to write about your struggles and I know it’s helped me work through mine! I do believe in karma… so my mantra is always “let’s all be good to each other” because if you put the good out there, it has to come back to you somehow! keep on truckin’ Heather!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Becca, I couldn’t agree with you more about the karma! And it warms my heart to no end to know that I have in some small way encouraged and inspired you…that is what makes all of this worth it in the end and helps give me more strength to build on each day! Thank you so much! <3

  6. These are all amazing! Surrounding yourself with positive really is the best way to be positive! I’m working on this one myself! You, my friend, are an inspiration! Love you!

  7. Always happy to give support and love! I think surrounding yourself with positive people is definitely key, especially in rough moments. Looks like you have a lot of great-advice givers to help you keep your chin up!

  8. I love Gabby’s quote!!!

My quote is from my dad: “You can do anything you want to if you want to badly enough.”

That’s the reason behind the Believe tattoo on my wrist. I doubted myself going into MBA school – questioned my decision, whether I was as smart as all those Tech engineers, whether I could afford it – so I got my tattoo and every time I feel uncertain I look at my wrist and remember that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.

    Love you.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I love this…and I love you TOO! I never knew the story behind your tattoo…what a great way to not only remind yourself of what you can do, but what you HAVE DONE! You are so smart and have accomplished so much! Your dad would be more than proud of you! xoxo

  9. Kim says:

My mantra is very simple… I worked at an inpatient hospice unit and I say to myself that my day is never as bad as the patients in those beds dying…. especially the very young patients. I can get up and put one foot in front of the other… I am not suffering from a terminal, debilitating disease… I have NOTHING to complain about. 🙂

  10. Lisa says:

These are all so wonderful to read! I definitely like looking at positive quotes to give myself a little pep in my step. I find them really inspiring.
I definitely think during these times, it’s so important to surround yourself with love, positivity and happy energy!
    Hope you’re doing well!!

  11. So many inspirational and thoughtful comments! Thanks for sharing/pointing them out. I enjoyed reading them–must have been just what I needed today. 🙂

  12. Emily says:

Sending lots of love and hugs to you, lady! The past few months have been really rough for me too so I completely understand and am so proud of the positivity you’ve maintained. Sometimes taking our own advice is the hardest part. <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yes, if only we could heed our own advice…I’m sure our troubles could be split in half! Oh sweetie, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been having a hard time. Know that that love and those hugs are multiplied by 10 and sent straight back to YOU!! xoxo

  13. I love your attitude! When I am feeling down, I remind myself of how lucky I am and how much I have in my life. I just list off the good things and it brightens my perspective 🙂

  14. Kristy @ Southern In-Law says:

Sending many many hugs your way, lovely.

When times are tough, I like to centre myself. For me, that’s heading out to the gorgeous park at the bottom of my street, walking down the trail and sitting on a big rock that looks out over the river. There I sit, close my eyes and listen – I listen to all of the sounds around me, notice the breeze on my skin and the feel of the rock underneath me and I breathe, thinking of all that fresh, clean air going into my lungs.

Once I feel relaxed and focused, I pray and I talk to God. I thank him for the bumps in the road which let us be thankful for all that we do have – and I pray that he reveals his path for me one step at a time. I thank The Lord for my blessings and those that are yet to come and I stay focused on Him.

For me, faith, family and friends are the things that get me through the hardest times – but belief in myself is also a huge part of that.

So make sure you take a moment to realise all of the brilliant things about you, Heather, because you totally deserve to be happy <3 xxx

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Kristy! I feel like I’m perched on that rock right there beside you! It sounds like a heavenly place to be. There really is something to be said about the clarity you can find in nature and being surrounded by the beauty and stillness of it all…it sort of feels like it has the power to momentarily slow down time. Thank you so much for your loving words of support…I feel so grateful to be able to call you my friend! xoxo

  15. I’m glad you were able to reach out to and lean on others for support. That’s a really good thing, being able to work through the issue and keep your head up at the same time. One of my favorite quotes is “She stood in the storm, and when the wind did not blow her away, she adjusted her sails.”
    Happy today love.

  16. I’m sending you a ton of love and a whole lot of HUGS!
