Marvelous NOT Modest

Do you have trouble taking a compliment?Β

Whether it’s someone telling you that you’re pretty…or commending you for a job well done….do you shrug it off and make excuses? Do you respond with things like: “Oh my gosh, are you blind? I’m having such a bad hair/fat/pimples are erupting all over my face day,” orΒ “No really, Joe did most of the work”?

Well, I call BULLSHIT!

I mean, no one wants you to be an arrogant asshole, but what about those moments where you feel like a total badass? Shouldn’t you celebrate those moments?

Me

Like when you buy a new outfit and even though it’s a humid summer day, you’re hair looks freakin’ fabulous and you just feel pretty?

BBQ with the Man-Friend

Or when you co-host another delicious cookout with your man-friend
(or WOman-friend ;)) complete with pulled pork BBQ that you helped prepare, “power” salad and fruit salad that you took beautiful pictures of but had absolutely no hand in making, and a pan of crazy good brownies that NO ONE would stop raving about?

Salty Slutty Brownies

Crazy…salty…SLUTTY BROWNIES!

DSC_0090

Or when you put together the most awesome Ruby Tuesday-esque salad bar for your mom’s FIFTIETH birthday on Saturday complete with ALL her favorites?

Mom & Me

Or when you look at a pic of you and your mother and realize that not only is she absolutely gorgeous, but you look a lot more like her than you thought?

And not to mention when she greets you with a “oh, you’re so skinny…I remember when I was that skinny” compliment even though you haven’t felt thin in MONTHS?

Or what about when the UNTHINKABLE happens?

The stars align, Betty Crocker’s ora remains with you, the HEAVENS OPEN, and from your NON-BAKER hands (and a bag of flour, a pot, a couple of pans, a lot of stirring, even more patience, and maybe a tiny little breakdown in the middle of all of that)
comes this…

German Chocolate Cake 3

German…

German Chocolate Cake 2

Chocolate…

German Chocolate Cake 1

Completely DAIRY-FREE (?!?!)…

German Chocolate Cake Slice

SEX CAKE?!?!

Well, if you ask me, that’s the time you put the modesty aside, you pat yourself on the back, serve you up a slice WITH a scoop of ice cream without a thought to good vs bad, calorie vs schmalorie, and say…

HELL YEAH, I’M FRICKIN’ MARVELOUS!

Recipe coming soon!

For now, how about hopping on over to Katie’s blog and checking out the massive amount of Monday positivity? But first, it’s time to toot your own horn…

Tell me, what makes YOU marvelous?

  6. OMG that cake looks amazing! I love German Chocolate and it was my dad’s favorite growing up so we always made him one for his bday. Not one that looked like that though!

  7. Rachel says:

I love that salad bar idea!

  8. Being able to take compliments has been the topic of several conversations I’ve had lately with my daughter. Love the salad bar idea!

  9. DEAR GOD THAT CAKE. And agreed with this. Don’t know why our society has such a hard time taking compliments!

  10. That.Looks.Amazing!!
And seriously there’s a video I saw on The TODAY show this morning that was an exaggerated version of women and their inability to take a compliment…that’s so me, it makes me awkward. WHY CAN’T WE JUST SAY THANK YOU!?!

  11. HAH! I love this post so much. You are flipping fabulous, girl!

  12. Hell yes you are marvelous girl! I am loving all the celebrations/parties happening in this post. And that cake…and dairy free…be right back while I die and go to heaven…:-)

  13. I want sex cake.

    Oh and P.S. You’re fabulous.

  14. That cake. Should not be legal. and what a great idea of throwing your own salad bar!! Hope you have a great start to your week! I will be making one of your pancake creations this week- the hard task is choosing which one!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Arman! Honestly, I can’t believe we haven’t done the salad bar thing before! It was a total hit! And ohh, let me know what you think of the pancakes!! πŸ˜€

  15. 1. I know I’m a totaly bad ass. So there.
    2. You are gorgeous. Just like your mamma.
    3. Please make me sluttly brownies. It’s still my birthday month!
    4. I want that cake too. With a side of sluttly. Brownie, that is.
    5. I feel like there needed to be 5 points but my ADD didn’t allow me to absorbe much past chocolate deliciouness and your stunning beauty. πŸ˜‰

  16. Holy moly, those brownies and your cake look AMAZING!! I just showed my husband the brownies and the first thing he said was, “We are making those tomorrow!” So, I’ll be getting some oreos and chocolate chips at the grocery store in the morning!

Also, I can’t wait to see your cake recipe!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, nice! I was going for a mega sweet/salty combo so I replaced the chocolate chips in the cookie dough with crushed pretzels (and then more on top) but they were still SUPER sweet! I think next time, I might decrease the sugar in the recipe…you know, since I’m a pansy and all! πŸ˜‰

  17. Yes!!! I love that you wrote this and that you’re owning your strengths, your beauty and your skills! Mega props to you girl, you are the definition of marvellous and don’t ever forget it! Why DO so many women feel that it’s wrong to embrace this side of them? Not at all, shout it from the rooftops!

  18. Lucie says:

YESSSS for being so flipping marvelous, fabulous, genius and beautiful girl!!
I mean, who can say from herself to own the skill to bake such a forbidden SEX cake?? I WANT IT!
Your mother looks so young, I can not believe it. You two are just gorgeous!
PS. Pass me over a few slutties please. Like now.

  19. Such a tease with that cake!!!

    Those slutty brownies, OMG phenomenal!

  20. I must admit, I’m not a good compliment taker! Rather than say the opposite, I tend to just say a thank you and shrug it off. I do really need to realise that I should be listening to those compliments because obviously I DESERVE them. I compliment others when I mean it – and surely others do the same. I think it goes back to when I was a kid and bullies would use compliments as taunts – something to pick on you with and make you feel uncomfortable. “You’re so pretty… What? You think you’re pretty? Well you’re not” that kind of thing that I still hear kids say today and it makes me sick!

Your salad bar looks amazing – and totally what we’re planning on doing for our wedding shower!

YOU are marvellous my friend – and I am totally virtually high fiving you for that cake! It looks amazing!

What makes me marvellous? I care – genuinely. I’m the friend that’s there no matter what, who calls or sends a letter “just because” and who literally would do anything she could to help when she says she will. I’ve noticed a lot of people aren’t like that anymore – and I’m so proud that I am! Also, my eyes are pretty marvellous!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Kristy!! I always love reading your comments! I want you to know that you are the ONLY person to actually answer my question and that means a lot to me…I really think we ALL should take more time to appreciate our strengths and acknowledge them on a regular basis. I’ve been doing a lot of work on self-love lately and I can honestly say it is making SUCH a difference in my overall outlook on life…and toward myself! And I ALSO want you to know that I think you are absolutely gorgeous, a brilliant baker, and are going to make one heck of a wife/mother! Oh my gosh, you and Jessie will make the prettiest babies!!! Oh sorry, guess I’m getting a little ahead of myself there! πŸ˜‰

      Love ya! xoxox

      • Haha – don’t worry, every time I say I feel nauseous I get 1022035023401240 emails from people saying “OH MY GOSH! ARE YOU PREGNANT?! It’s okay.. you can tell me!” you’re not the only one hahaa

I love how alike we are!

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh gosh! Haha! My mom finally decided to give up on me. Used to, every time I’d say “guess what!” she’d get all giddy, clap her hands and say “YOU’RE PREGNANT!” Yeah…good times! πŸ˜‰

  21. OMG. That cake. I have no words. I don’t think I’ve ever had German chocolate cake before… what makes it different from chocolate cake?

Happy birthday to your gorgeous mama! I can definitely see the resemblance between you two! πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks love! Really, the only thing that makes it German chocolate cake is the pairing with the creamy coconut and pecan filling/frosting as far as I know…and in my opinion, it’s the BEST way to have chocolate…unless we’re talking peanut butter, that’s a whole other thing entirely! πŸ˜‰

  22. You ARE marvelous! I’ve been missing you SO much, lady, but just think…in less than two weeks, I will officially be a resident of Alabama–well, OK, I’ll have to go through a lot of DMV crapola before that happens “officially”–and only about 4 hours from you. That is NOTHING.

  23. Mmmmmarvelous indeed! Gimme those brownies!!!

  24. Ugh. You bring up too many good points. I am so horrible at taking compliments. I usually just brush them off and try to give the spotlight to someone else. Yes, they make me feel good, but often I just feel undeserving at the same time, or in the next breath someone will call me out as being “an impostor, fake, not good enough, second-rate, etc.” Has that ever happened? Maybe once or twice however not as dramatic or as rude. In my head though whenever I receive a compliment though I always think there is some ulterior motive. That or the person’s lying and just trying to be nice. Yep. I’ve got a lot to work on.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It definitely takes practice…I used to be the worst at accepting compliments, but after a few thank you’s where I consciously had to keep myself from adding, “but…”, it got a lot easier! And you know what helps? Giving YOURSELF a compliment every now and then…if make a habit out of noticing AND acknowledging your strengths and positive attributes, it won’t sound so foreign to you when someone else takes notice and compliments you! πŸ™‚

  25. Eric says:

    Hah hahha

    Sex cake.

Looks good! And so do you!

  26. Pretty lady (and momma), you are marvelous. Is it weird I love the salad bar as much as the chocolate cake…because I do. Speaking of cake, what’s a girl gotta do to get a slice. I was drooling and celebrating your accomplishments over Instagram this weekend. I love a good kitchen weekend and I was thrilled to see you having one. I’m even more thrilled with what came out of it. You go ahead and toot your own horn because you deserve it.
Dammit, why don’t you live closer already?!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Omg, I cannot even BEGIN to think of all the shenanigans we would get into if we lived closer together…the men would surely be bailing us out of jail every other weekend! You got kicked out of the supermarket AGAIN?!?! Lol

But seriously, thanks doll! It’s been a LONG time since I’ve had this much fun in the kitchen…especially while BAKING!! I may or may not have done a little booty shaking in your honor! πŸ˜‰

  28. I have an absolutely terribly hard time taking a compliment. I look down and usually shrug it off, deflect with a terrible comment about myself…mumble…its awful. Note to self, work on that. And stop blushing with embarrassment. Noted.

  29. what a freaking awesome post! sorry I haven’t commented in a while sweetie, i have been reading all of your posts, but my comments have been slacking big time. sorry x 1000000000

honestly, i love this post so much and it reminded me so much of high five friday

i want people to celebrate what makes them marvelous! what makes them rule! what makes them feel badass!

you get it! you should submit some high fives cause clearly, like i said, YOU GET IT πŸ˜‰

you rock my love! and what makes me marvelous today is that i repeated “love your body how it is NOW a million times in my head today” for some reason i was really struggling today but I AM MARVELOUS at positive self talk and really helped myself through my “tough” time today

  30. calee says:

Hello my friend! I feel like I haven’t caught up with you in ages. Been a crazy busy summer. Thought I’d stop by and see how you were doing and say hello!

    You are supremely marvelous.

What makes me marvelous? What doesn’t make me marvelous is the question. πŸ˜‰ Kidding.

What makes me marvelous is my newfound ability to (seemingly) be able to adapt to everything that gets thrown at me. I think that may come with nearing 30 though …

    Oh, and my hair. πŸ˜›
