What I Ate in Atlanta

Hey guys!

Happy What I Ate Wednesday!

As always, a big thank you to the gorgeous Jenn for hosting our weekly party! Be sure to head over to Peas & Crayons and check out everyone else’s link ups this week!

Oh, and can I get a round of applause for actually posting on the right day this week? Sorry about the confusion last MONDAY…I blame it on the zombie brain!

As promised in yesterday’s post, I will tease you no longer…it’s time to see all the deliciousness that was my Atlanta trip this weekend, but I’ll warn you…you may want to grab a napkinsponge…mop! 😉

Laura did an amazing job of introducing Allie and me to a wide variety of eats this weekend, but I have to say out of everything, the most memorable was our dinner at Pushstart Kitchen on Friday night…

Remember that mouth-watering menu?

Well, like I mentioned yesterday, before the meal even got started, my mind was already blown!

These masa cakes were more than just fried corn flour with a mayonnaise dipping sauce… soft on the inside, crisp and crunchy on the outside and the spices in the tomato aioli were the PERFECT compliment to the buttery flavor!

And the starter cocktail was perfect as we came in from the chilly night air…a mix of rum, honey sauce, and lemon which was combined with hot black tea!

First course: Bacon & Apple Fritters with pickled apple, white cheddar, and shaved fennel

The fritters again satisfied my love of contrasting textures with a soft pillowy inside surrounded by a crunchy exterior that still provided enough give to soak up the swirls of sauce and cheese!

Served alongside a glass (or two) of chardonnay. 😉

Second Course: Seared beef flank with burnt shallots, crispy potatoes, romesco, and dandelion chimichurri

The steak was SO tender, the shallots SO sweet, the potatoes moist and delicious…and I swear I could have drunk a gallon of the romesco!

Served alongside a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon which I was surprised that I liked. I’m really more of a white girl…like seriously, you should see me dance! 😉

Third Course: Coffee tires leche with Evan Williams ice cream, candied macadamias, and hot fudge

I am a tres leche virgin NO MORE! And for this to be my first experience? Oh my gosh, I’m pretty sure I had an out-of-body experience with this one! The coffee addition was perfect…not overpowering to the other flavors at all. I loved how the whiskey-spiked ice cream soaked into the cake and meshed with all the flavors. And the candied macadamia nuts? I don’t even like macadamia nuts, but these were on a whole other level!

Served alongside a glass of sparkling wine.

And just when I thought the meal was over…

Fourth Course: Cajeta de coco (Costa Rican coconut fudge)

Soft and truffle like on the inside with an outside covered in crushed vanilla cookies it was enough to put me over the top…so I had TWO! 😉

Served with (some REALLY strong) apple moonshine.

The next night, Allie wasn’t feeling so well, but she urged Laura and I to continue with our dinner plans for the evening. With assurances to rush home with tummy pills if need be, we headed out to Barcelona Wine Bar for a night of tapas…

Grilled okra in chorizo oil and fresh bread

The okra had that fantastic burnt flavor you get from a well seasoned grill and paired with the spicy chorizo oil? Well, we may or may not have lapped it up with our bread instead of using the olive oil that was given to us! 😉

Ceviche
(Red snapper and shrimp)

My first ever…tasted like cocktail shrimp, but the sauce it was in was beyond amazing…a little sweet, a little spicy…the perfect compliment to the cool temperature of the dish.

Caramelized brussel sprouts with bacon, shallots, and thyme and grilled hangar steak with black truffle sauce

Those were the best damn brussel sprouts I’ve ever put in my mouth! And a bite of steak and the brussels at the same time? With the truffle sauce? HEAVEN!!

For our “dessert”, we decided to keep it light…

Idiazabal cheese with red grapes and quince jam

The cheese had a fantastically smokey flavor that went great with the sweetness of the grapes and jam.

Of course, Mr. Hot Bartender had other plans for how we ended our meal that night…

Neither one of us is a huge fan of flan, but we each had a couple of bites…because c’mon, you never turn down free dessert…especially when it comes from a Paul Rudd look-alike!

Before Allie and I headed back to Tennessee on Sunday, we all decided to hit up
Dulce Vegan for lunch…you know, just to balance out all that carnivorous fare! 😉

Allie ordered the tempeh-based chicken salad:

Which she raved about.

While Laura and I decided to split the soup and sandwich combo.

Butternut squash soup with a few dashes of Chohula
(which I am now addicted to…thanks Laura!)

TLT (Tempeh Lettuce & Tomato)
with chipotle aioli and a side of apple fennel slaw

The slaw was just okay…I think it could have used a bit more spice, but the sandwich was incredible…the chipotle aioli was perfect next to the smokey tempeh!

And of course, it was even better dipped in my soup! 😉

Then Allie and I picked out a scone and tea for the road and we were off!

Lavender chocolate chip scone and cherry amaretto tea

I’ll admit, after a couple of bites, I was already thinking of ways I could turn this scone into a panCOOKIE! 😉

What’s the last NEW food you tried? Did you like it?

What is your favorite ethnic dessert?
I’ve always loved sopapillas but I’m definitely going with tres leches now! 😀

Atlanta: Underground and Marvelous

Happy Monday lovelies!

Gosh, I am totally blown away by the excitement coming from you guys over yesterday’s panCOOKIES! Can’t wait to get in the kitchen this week and see what I can whip up for next Sunday!

I hope you all had a MARVELOUS weekend!

Of course, I just HAVE to link up to Katie’s MIMM because this weekend was fantastic!

I mean, how could it not be when it was spent with these beauties:

Me, Laura, and Allie

Allie and I arrived in Atlanta early Friday night. It was about a four and a half hour drive from Nashville but you wouldn’t have thought it took more than a couple of hours with the way we were jabbering the entire time! 😉

Laura had big plans for us for dinner that night…she’s spoken highly of Push Start Kitchen, an underground supper club (um, how cool does THAT sound?) many times so Allie and I definitely knew we were in for a treat, but I had no idea just how much I would LOVE it!

I want to save all the food pics from my trip for my What I Ate Wednesday post, but here’s a glimpse of the setting for the night:

I couldn’t get over the fact that the chef and his wife run the whole thing out of their home! It was so perfectly set…great mood lighting (aka bad foodie lighting), nice music, and a beautiful tablescape…

The table, which was absolutely gorgeous with it’s rustic finish, was arranged for a
dinner for sixteen.

I loved all the little accents…simple yet charming!

We started off with a warm cocktail of rum-spiked black tea with honey syrup and masa cakes served with tomato aioli…which were only like little pillows of Heaven dipped in creamy, life-changing nectar of the gods!*

Note: That is NOT an exaggeration.

As we were mingling and waiting for the other guests to arrive, we were able to catch a glimpse of our first course!

And here’s a little tease:

The menu for the night!

Two words: FOOD COMA 😉

Zach, the amazingly talented chef, his super cute and VERY pregnant wife, Christina, and me.*

Sorry for the incredibly horrible iPhone photos :-/

The next morning, the three of us eased out of bed, enjoyed our morning ACV cocktails courtesy of our host/bartender ;), and relaxed a bit before it was time for me to whip up a batch of Snickerdoodle PanCOOKIES!

Made even better topped with Nutzo and crack sauce!

Then it was off to Atlanta’s first annual Vegan Festival!

They had a TON of vendors from companies all supporting animal rights…there were booths with t-shirts, jewelry, supplements, desserts, you name it! Of course, if you know us, you know…we were just there for the food! 😉

Delicious VEGAN food!

The rest of the afternoon we spent walking around shops in Atlanta enjoying the MARVELOUS weather!

And some more “snacking” when we stopped in at Bella Cucina

I’m such a sucker for free samples!

And I totally fell off the wagon on the pantry challenge as soon as I saw these pickled plums!

You would too if you read the ingredients!
Pitted dried plums, apple cider vinegar, cane sugar, coriander seed, mustard seed, arbol chili, bay leaf, and orange peel

For the record, it’s delicious! 😉

We also stopped in this little chocolate shop with the CUTEST displays, no samples there (which was probably a good thing since we were stuffed to the brim already) but I couldn’t resist a couple of pics!

Isn’t that macaron tree the cutest?

We ended our shopping for the day at the granddaddy of all farmer’s markets:

Seriously, this place was HUGE!

And they also didn’t allow any pictures (grumble)…but I just HAD to sneak a couple once I found myself in the mustard aisle mecca:

I’m not even kidding you, my blood pressure went up when I saw all of this! Lol

Annnnnnnnd well…I had already fallen off the wagon…

Hey, I could have done a LOT worse! 😉

The prices were so incredibly cheap! I got the hemp protein for only 15 bucks and c’mon, you gotta be proud of me for only coming home with ONE jar of mustard! Lol

Dinner that night (which again, I’ll only tease you with for now), at Barcelona, included a sweet treat, but that’s not just any dessert…

That’s FREE dessert!

From this VERY hot bartender! 😉

Ummmphffft!

The next day we just chilled a bit, enjoyed some peanut flour/cottage cheese quesadillas made by our gracious hostest…

Yum!

And ended with lunch at Dulce Vegan!

Then, sadly, it was time for Allie and I to head back to Tennessee…

Our attempt at sad faces! Haha!

But not sad for long because we all know…

This weekend is DEFINITELY happening again!

And maybe next time, Lee won’t be out of town while we’re there! 😉

What did YOU do this weekend?

Have you ever tried a masa cake?
I swear my life has been forever altered since that first bite! Lol

Snickerdoodle Protein Pancakes

Oh yeah, I did it again…

It seemed to me that last week’s oatmeal raisin panCOOKIES simply had too much fun and well, with a few of you guys mentioning a love for the cinnamon-sugar classic,
I just couldn’t resist!

And let’s face it, we food bloggers DO have a thing for cinnamon, don’t we?

So…who wants a cookie? 😉

Snickerdoodle Protein Pancakes

By: Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli

Prep Time: 5-10 minutes

Cook Time: 10-12 minutes

Keywords: fry breakfast dairy-free high protein no sugar added oats protein powder cinnamon coconut flour Pancake Sunday

Ingredients (Serves 1)

For Cinnamon Syrup

  • 1/8 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

For the Pancakes

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats, ground into flour
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut flour*
  • 1 scoop (30g) vanilla protein powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon sodium-free baking powder
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter extract (optional, but recommended)
  • Note: Can sub coconut flour with the same amount of ground flax. Just decrease the amount of milk to 1/4 cup. The texture will be a bit different (not as soft/moist) but still tasty!

Instructions

For Cinnamon Syrup

Whisk together syrup and cinnamon in a small bowl until all of the cinnamon is incorporated.

For the Pancakes

1. Preheat a skillet or griddle to medium heat and coat with cooking spray.
2. Combine flours, protein powder, cinnamon, and baking powder.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk egg white until frothy.
4. Add milk and extracts to egg, stir.
5. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir well.
6. Spoon batter onto hot skillet, forming 4 small-medium sized pancakes.
7. Cook 5-6 minutes per side or until golden brown.
8. Transfer to plate and top with butter and cinnamon syrup.

Nutrition facts for pancakes only*:

*The protein powder that I use is 110 calories with 25g of protein per 30g scoop.

Like I mentioned in the recipe,  ground flax can be used instead of the coconut flour. Just be sure to decrease the amount of milk you use to 1/4 cup.

BUT if you CAN get your hands on some coconut flour,
it makes a HUGE difference!

A soft, fluffy, and incredibly moi-…yeah, that kind of difference! 😉

Happy Pancake COOKIE Sunday!

I’m officially taking requests…

What should our next flavor be?
