I AM a Runner!

Thank you guys for all the sweet comments on the house decor! I’m definitely keeping the curtains…just have to starch, iron, and hem those babies!

A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon one of those blog posts that gets ya thinkin’. It was a guest post on Lisa’s blog from another Lisa (did I lose you?) on learning to claim the title of “a runner”.

I’ve never considered myself a runner. I enjoy running, but I always thought that I was too slow or took too many walk breaks to ever call myself a runner. That is until I read this line from Lisa’s post:

  • “It’s all about having the confidence to say that you are running. If you’re not walking, you’re running. (Besides, jogging’s something people did in the 80′s.)”

Wow! Talk about a confidence boosting slap in the face! What’s that I smell…roses? Oh yeah, I’m awake!

Who cares if I’m not the fastest. Who care’s if I stop for walk breaks. Who cares if I’ve never run further than 5 miles. The fact is:

I AM running!

Lately, running has become a bit of a release for me. I was feeling a bit of leftover “I hate my job because it’s no longer the weekend” funk today and when my shift finally ended and I saw how beautiful it was outside, I decided to go for a little impromptu run!

Oh yeah, poor gal’s forerunner right there!

A freebie watch the hospital gave me and my car to drive the course to figure out my mileage

Would it be too much to ask for Christmas in July??

I’m currently using a little strip of highway that leads from Walmart to a gas station for my runs…2.5 miles there, 2.5 miles back…and I get a pee break! Haha! I had only planned to run about half the distance today, but when it came time to turn around and head back to the car, my legs just weren’t ready to quit yet!

I was really proud of myself for going the entire distance, especially on the way back from my “pee break” when the wind had me wondering if I was even moving at all!

(For those of you who don’t know, Matt of The Athlete’s Plate is a total.speed.demon! I’m sure he looks like a blur to passersby!)

You wanna know the best part? Even with the wind, the humidity, AND the fact that I had just worked an 8 hour shift…I cut SIX MINUTES off my time from Saturday! I’m sorry, but I’m kinda feeling like a rockstar right now!

Do you enjoy running?

Do you have a hard time calling yourself a runner?

  1. LOL. Thanks for the shout out!

Ah I’m getting into running this year and I love it so much! I ran my first 5k last month, and I’m running my first 10k in August. I’m so psyched. My timing isn’t/won’t be as amazing as yours probably, but I can try haha!

    • That’s awesome Chelsea! You gotta start somewhere! It’s hard to believe how far I’ve come in only a few short months…back in January, I wouldn’t dream of running more than 2 1/2 miles at a time…and I think I would run that in about 30 minutes!

  3. Veronica says:

BWAHahahahaha! I love your Garmin. Teehehe, totally something I would do! But you I think you can figure your mileage on Google maps. I used to use sparkpeople’s map thingy in the fitness tracker section to track my miles b/c I could draw out exactly where I went by pointing and clicking. Now I’m NOT a runner. I was briefly, but not any more. The funny thing is, I finally broke down and bought myself some nice running shoes and that’s when I stopped! lol

    • I should try that! I used it a couple of times when I would run in my old neighborhood, but since it was a relatively new subdivision, only half of it was on the map!

I’ve been thinking about getting a good pair of running shoes…I hope I don’t jinx myself! Any brands you’d recommend?

I love that you are running. It is such a stress reliever.
I miss running. It was the best thing I could ever do for myself!

  5. Kayla says:

    YEAH you are awesome!

I am so SLOW, ugh! It’s HARD to get faster!

I am running my first “real” 5k race on Friday – eep! (at least I plan to, I haven’t registered yet!) I’m hoping I’ll be able to at least CROSS the finish line!

I don’t necessarily consider myself a runner, but I guess I AM! I go out and run my little heart out 3 times a week, so I guess that counts!

  6. I started claiming runner about two months ago and it was so empowering. I run, therefore, I am a runner. No more, walk/jog crap for me.

  7. Go you!! You ARE a runner! I still feel weird telling people I’m a runner- it just sounds so official, you know? I usually enjoy running but running and I are having some issues right now- I’m sick of it!

    • Really?! You?! Well, you have been going pretty balls-to-the-wall lately. Maybe you just need a break! Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if your body starts associating running with sickness from your last 2 big races! :-/

  8. i am OBSESSED with running, it’s the BEST! so glad you are being loud and proud about it! i agree, once you own it and call yourself one the more of one you become!

  9. Emilia says:

YAY for running. It really is like a boyfriend. You get hooked on it and want to improve it more and more. 🙂 Take it easy though- i’ve had a couple running related injuries due to not taking rest days in the past. Now? Go 1-2 days per week, depending on my mood and how my body feels and i’m just fine with that. I also don’t set any milage or time goals– just recreationally do it for me!

  10. I’m trying to become a runner… I think I’ll claim the title once I get to running 2-3 times a week regularly 😉 preferably before my half marathon in october bahaha 🙂

you go girl, I’m so proud of you! 🙂 You are amazing!!!

  11. That is so awesome!! Shoot I probably have like a 12 minutes mile. But I love running because it’s total “me” time! 🙂

  12. yeaaaah, girl!!! that is AWESOME!! And even moreso that you shaved 6 whole minutes off your last time. Holy cow!
I do have a hard time calling myself a runner. I’m slow and I take walk breaks. But I guess the fact that I still get out there and I still enjoy it is what matters more than how fast I go.

  13. lindsay says:

girl that is fast to me! and I am a runner. I think if you have a passion or a love of something, that makes you part of it. Like RUNNING…..A RUNNER!

  14. YAYAY!! that is AWESOME!! i honeslty still dont consider myself a runner but i shud give myself more credit!! thanks for this love!

  15. Lisa Fine says:

Thanks for the shout out! And yes, you are definitely a runner. (I am slooowww…but I don’t let that stop me.)

And you should feel especially good about your time improvement. That’s excellent!

  16. You go girl! I agree–running is something for yourself, no need to compare to others, though enduring runners who have completed half marathons and marathons can be huge inspirations! I have never ran more than 3.1 miles, but I sure am darn proud of that! And I hope to run more 🙂 let’s keep chugging along!

    • So true about the inspiration…it’s amazing what the human body can do! I think anything you do that challenges you and takes you out of your comfort zone is always worth taking pride in!

  17. Great job Heather! I am not a runner. I’m like Phoebe from Friends…not pretty at all. I love me some kickboxing though!

  18. you’re TOTALLY a runner! way to go!!!! isn’t the runner’s high the best feeling ever? When I was injured (recently, still recovering), I hadn’t run in over a month–but I still considered myself a runner–I always do. Whether I’m injuired, in a running rut, or in my groove, I love knowing running will always be there when I need it. 🙂

  19. cbrady3 says:

Nice Job! It took me a while to be able to say I am a runner…but now I say it easily and with pride!

  20. girl, you ARE a runner, most definitely! that’s fast! 🙂 I like that you say it’s an outlet for you… I ran track in school (barefoot even!) and in college I kept it up, mainly as an outlet separate from my normal workouts!

    love the garmin, too 😉

  21. Valerie says:

woo hoo! go on with your bad self 🙂
