WIAW: Sweet & Savory

Good morning bloggies, lurkers, and friends of mine who say you read my blog but never comment (it’s ok, we don’t bite…well, unless you’re covered in peanut butter)! πŸ˜‰

You kids know how I roll on Wednesdays, so let’s get this party started!

Please be sure to tip your waiter thank your host!

Love ya Jenn!

Breakfast (7:15am)
A genius take on a sweet/savory breakfast from my girlΒ Christin!

Peanut butter, egg, pumpkin butter, and raisin sandwich!

With a side of my boyfriend Joe and vitamin candy πŸ˜‰

Snack (10:45am)
A no-reason-needed cupcake made by a friend at work

Is a cupcake before noon like a drink before 5?

Nahhh!

Lunch (12:15pm)
Clean out the fridge type salad and a tortilla stuffed with crack cheese!

Steamed kale, kidney beans, roasted BBQ kabocha, corn, and fresh tomatoes

Snack #1 (3:o0pm)
Changing my ways and going green!

Snack #2 (6:00pm)
Jaaaaauicy watermelon leftover from this weekend

Dinner (8:00pm)
OvernightΒ Overday Oats

Yep, pretty sure I’m on to something here!

When I work my late shifts, there’s nothing worse coming home after a grueling 10 hour shift and trying to figure out what to make for dinner before chewing your own arm off!

Solution: whip up some breakfast for dinner while you’re packing lunch!

Basic Overnight Oats: (serves 1)
My “go-to” recipe for OO’s

  • 1/2 cup uncooked rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup of yogurt (cottage cheese works well too)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon extract of your choosing (vanilla, almond, etc)
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon cinnamon
1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and stir well.
2. Cover with a lid and allow to set in refrigerator overnight.
3. In the morning (or night), uncover and add enough water to get oats to your desired Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  consistency (I usually use about 1/4 cup).
4. Garnish with fresh fruit and healthy fats like nut butter or coconut!

Bedtime Snack (10:15pm)
Next morning evidence of nightly broccoli dipping!

Ladies & gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case!

Water consumption via Camelbak:
2 Liters

It’s funny, without even thinking about it, my meals show a perfect balance of sweet and savory…I guess the body knows best, huh?

What did you snack on last night? Do you tend to go sweet or savory with nightly noshings?

  3. I always love your eats πŸ™‚ Such a good example of what active people need! And I agree; I don’t even work 10 hours but 8 is long enough to just want dinner ready when I get home! Hello, leftovers or super quick sandwich/salads.
I’m definitely a sweet nightly nosher. Uh, I’m a sweet nosher in general, haha. Cereal bowls and muffins are my jam πŸ˜‰

  4. Lee says:

I’m a sweet snacker. Last night, I had some dry cereal.

  5. I pretty much always snack on cereal with greek before bed. Carbs are the way to go πŸ˜‰

  6. Anastasia says:

Everything looks delicious! I had a banana and almond butter right before bed. It’s so good!

  7. hahah i love your opening/greeting! you are too funny. πŸ™‚ LOVE the idea of overday oats–breakfast for dinner is the best!

I tend to snack sweet before bed, if at all. Last night I had some fruit. So happy it’s summer!!

  8. Mm, that hummus looks delicious!! Im aaall for the sweets- or not too sweet, but dark-chocolate-and-almond-butter-sweet! Im not really into salty snacks πŸ™‚

  9. Anna Crouch says:

I’m sorry! I totally am one who reads but never comments! I’m here, I’m here!!!

  10. Caroline says:

I absolutely love your blog!! you are hilarious, take amazing pictures, and amazing food! i love your weird combos because it makes me feel a little better about my own food too… πŸ™‚ i promise i mill try to comment more often! i just love the community of the healthy bloggers because i am only 17 and there are not many people around my town a lot like me πŸ™ but i learn a lot from you guys! thanks

    • Aww Caroline, you just made my day! I know what it’s like to feel alone in the world of healthy living/eating! I have a lot of real-life friends that just don’t get it! Ever since I first discovered this community last summer, I have felt more and more relaxed and at home with my fellow health nuts! It’s so good to finally find people that can appreciate a big bowl of oats topped with nut butter or who know what a chia seed is without thinking Chia Pet! Lol

Thank you so much for commenting! Have a great rest of the week!

  11. Tiff says:

Sometimes I wonder what my dinners would be like if I didn’t come home and cook for the hubby. I think there would be *lots* of oats, egg sammies, and peeb&nanner sandwiches in my diet!

  12. I looove sweet and savory throughout the day! I loved your question about a cupcake before noon, hah. I think a cupcake before noon is like taking your vitamins… good for you!

  13. Ahh girl I love your WIAW. Always so delicious and accompanied by an amusing commentary. Love you!

Last night I snacked on a bowl of oatmeal with Greek yogurt, maple syrup, and almond butter. When it comes to snacks, mine are usually always sweet… especially before bed. I’m not sure if I could fall asleep with the taste of hummus or some other savory meal in my mouth… even after brushing!

  14. Ah great eats!! your stuff always looks so delicious.
When it comes to late night snacks sweet is for me! But then again I have a huge sweet tooth. I could eat sweets breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks

  15. Jenny says:

Love your yummy eats. Those oats look delicious! I think sometimes we all need a cupcake at 5 πŸ˜‰ It’s like happy hour right? And I’m definitely a sweets girl for my nightly noshings πŸ˜€

  16. Question: what on earth is kambocha, and what does it taste like? (the name sounds a lot like that fermented tea drink, which I’ve never had either!)

    πŸ™‚

    • Kabocha is a Japanese squash. It looks a lot like a buttercup squash but it is much sweeter! I’d never heard of it until I started reading HEAB’s blog and now it is my absolute favorite squash! You can read more about it here if you want: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabocha

I’ve only found kombucha in health food stores and Whole Foods…it definitely takes some getting used to, but it is an excellent source of all sorts of vitamins and probiotics…just all around GUD STUFF!

  17. Definitely sweet on the night time treats! I need a cupcake! I’ve been packing like a crazy person and I really think I deserve a cupcake! I hope you’re having a great week!

  18. leelu201 says:

For me night snacks are usually something sweetish – like a piece of fruit or dry cereal or something. Although I have had a savory cottage cheese/cracker combo on a few occasions. But nothing TOO flavorful or rich for me thanks πŸ™‚

  19. I love making oats for dinner πŸ™‚ I have such a sweet tooth! I would eat oats all day every day if I could πŸ™‚

  20. Ma Ma Megan says:

errythang looks so good! My fav is your breakfast though. I always make pb&J with an egg sandwiches. Too good for words πŸ™‚

  21. I still read…just never comment πŸ˜› Erik is grateful for the introduction to Trader Joe’s. It’s about time we go again!

  22. Emilia says:

You are SO funny; I just adore you cute sense of humor! πŸ™‚ I often feel like I’m listening to a comedian when reading your posts.
My usual night snack is carrot and PB and maybe a few rice cakes or chocolate, PB and banana. mmmm.

  23. Wait a tic.. JOE IS CHEATING ON ME?

  24. I rarely snack on savory foods, although lately I am loving broccoli and hummus too! I never thought I would crave broccoli, but I’ve been buying huge bags from Costco and devouring them πŸ™‚

  25. I need raisins on toast. Fact. But I can’t believe Joe’s cheating on me – I thought he was my boyfriend πŸ™‚
My snacks are all sweet – chocolate before bed every night isn’t great – but it’s sooooo good!

  26. Loving your WIAW’s! I always go sweet with my nightly snacking. Its usually cereal or dark chocolate πŸ™‚

  27. I love your blog, just so you know. You have such a great tone!!
I just can’t get into savoury breakfast. I really should try it though. I need to get my egg on! That said, I also can’t have sweet for dinner haha. But someday perhaps I’ll switch it up!!
Love hummus lately!! I just finished 2 tubs today (with the fams help) and have 2 already open again!!

  28. um yeah we totally bite people covered in peanut butter =)

why haven’t i had broccoli and hummus!? thats so a sin. need to fix this stat! <3

  29. katie says:

HAHA i love how you had that cupcake before lunch! like.. .why NOT do that? love it!

  30. I snacked on a mini cliff bar before I went to bed. I definitely go towards more sweet when snacking, but do my best to NOT always have a sweet snack. Your food always looks delicious!

  31. Yay!!! So glad you tried the sandwich… it’s a weird one but a great one!! πŸ˜€

  32. Cupcakes are allowed any time of day! The end:). Hmm, that breakfast sounds really different but good to me! I am going to have to try it!

  33. Loving the sweet and savory breakfast! Satisfies both palettes πŸ™‚

  34. KT says:

There is never a wrong time for a cupcake in my book (after all, it’s noon somewhere right?!) I love breakfast for dinner and need to remember to incorporate that into our meal plans more often πŸ™‚

    • Exactly what I was thinking! Of course I guess I really have no judge of time with my eats…a cupcake for brunch and breakfast for dinner! Ha! I swear I could live off breakfast!

  35. I don’t know if I could ever do sweet eggs, but hey, I can’t knock it til I try it! I want to try that crack dip!

  36. Ash says:

I’ve been eyeing that hummus in stores lately lol. Do you like that flavor? What are you absolute fav hummus flavors?

    • Oh yes, love the roasted pine nut! It’s my favorite somewhat neutral flavor…I can eat it alone or mix it with nutritional yeast or salsa! My favorite flavors? Hmm, what a question! I used to be crazy about roasted red pepper, but I ate it so much last year that I kinda got burnt out on it. Trader Joe’s tomato basil is pretty high up there, as is their white bean hummus. I still think my absolute favorite would have to be my PB&J hummus:

      http://kissmybroccoli.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/not-your-average-hummus/

      Dessert hummus rocks my world!

  37. Any extra cupcakes?!

Usually I go sweet at night..
But sometimes.. I go sweet.. and savory. Who said 2 snacks is bad?!
