WIAW: Packing in the Protein

Oh yeah, it’s that time of week again…

Please join Jenn and me in saying Haaaaaaapy What I Ate Wednesday!

Let’s party!

…..

Ok, so before you read any further, I just finished typing this up and realized a bit of a theme…and well, you already knew that since you saw the title of the post…but anyway, yeah, I thought it’d be fun to add in the protein counts for all of my meals.

Β Protein totals will be in red

…..

When I rolled out of bed Monday morning, even after spending most of the night with frozen shins, I knew there was NO way I was getting to the gym for Bodypump at 5am. Most people would have just reset their alarm clock based on this realization, but me? No I just hit snooze every 9 minutes until a little after 6am!

Nursing my post-run hangover, there was only one thing on my mind when I finally pulled my booty out of bed…

COFFEEEEEEE!

But this time, I tried a little something different…

Cinnamon before brew > cinnamon after brew!

Along the last of my candy vitamins

Looks like someone needs to plan a little trip to Target…oh darn! πŸ˜‰

After I got a little caffeine in my system, it was time to whip up some breakfast:

Breakfast (6:45am)
Vanilla Protein PancakesΒ
topped with bananas, coconut, and “special sauce”

Pancake mix = 7g, protein powder = 20 g, sauce = 3 g
Breakfast total = Β 30 grams

It may look disgusting, but let me tell you, my newest pancake topping is definitely a winner:

3 Tablespoon chai latte mix + 1 Tablespoon coconut flour + water

=

The perfect spicy complement to vanilla protein pancakes!

I can’t wait to try this with hot cocoa powder!

Snack (10:00am)
Peanut Butter Creme Power Crunch Bar

Snack total = 13 grams

After falling in love with the chocolate flavor last week, I was so excited to try the peanut butter flavor (for obvious reasons)…the first couple of bites were good, but then there was some sort of weird aftertaste to it…boo!

Lunch (12:30pm)
Leftover Honey Curried ChickPEA salad with a side of raw okraΒ

Bread = 8 g (4 g per slice), Chickpea salad = ~15g, Okra = 2 g
Lunch total = 25 gramsΒ

I still can’t get over how much the flavors intensify in this salad…even better than the first day I made it!

Snack (5:00)
1/2 cup 2% cottage cheese + 1 cup pineapple

Snack total = 14 grams

Tea Time (6:00pm)
Love combining different tea flavors into one cup!

Dinner (9:00pm)
An over-zealous breakfast burrito

So I may have had to break out the fork with this guy…
(Hello, my name is Heather and I’m a habitual “over stuffer”)

I added a little nutritional yeast to two scrambled eggs before topping them with sauteed onions and bell pepper, tomatoes, black olives, and a bit of sharp cheddar…holy yum!

Wrap = 4g, Eggs x 2 = 12g, Nooch = 3g, Cheese = 7g
Dinner total = 26 grams

Daily Water Consumption: 96 ounces

I’ve been forgetting to include my water in the last few WIAW posts, but I’ve been pretty proud of myself lately…since I switched to drinking out of my smaller Camelbak bottle, I’ve actually been doing a lot better about drinking more…kinda funny how that works.

Daily Protein Total = 108 grams

Hmm, not too shabby! πŸ™‚

Do you pay attention to the amount of protein you eat each day?
Actually, I think I’ve been doing it for so long that it just comes as second nature to me now. This day’s eats weren’t intentionally planned to include more protein, it’s just how I eat!

What is your favorite source of protein?
Right now, I’d have to say Trader Joe’s peanut flour…14 grams per 1/4 cup!

I dont really pay attention to the amount of protein I eat daily, but I think I eat a pretty good amount every day.
I would love to try peanut flour sometime soon! I have the feeling it could be my favorite source of protein πŸ˜€ I also love cottage cheese, greek yogurt and turkey or chicken as a protein source.

  2. Cheese is protein right? πŸ™‚

  3. PB&Jenny says:

I know this post is intended to be about protein – but I am just so enamored by your idea of adding cinnamon to coffee before brewing. Why are you so brilliant?!?!!?

Okay, back to the protein. Have you tried About Time?! It’s ridiculous! (in a good way). http://www.tryabouttime.com/ I would die for the chocolate flavor. Seriously. Amazing!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’ve only tried their cake batter flavor…and it did NOT taste a thing like cake batter! πŸ™ But I trust your judgement on the chocolate…might have to look into that…I know their ingredient list is pretty legit!

  4. Protein is awesome – since I’m tall and active, I aim for about 130-150 grams per day. Lots of yogurt, peanut flour, chicken, turkey…yum!

  5. Love this – I definitely make a conscious effort to eat more protein, but I can’t say I’ve ever actually counted! Also, I added pumpkin pie spice to my coffee before brewing this morning, and oh man, it was delicious.

  6. Nicky says:

Woww go you protein power girly! I don’t pay much attention to how much protein I get but I’m trying harder these days to make sure I get enough as I know previously I was seriously lacking. My favorite sources of protein are peanut flour (as you saw on my blog to make peanut flour roasted chickpeas…I eat them like it’s my job, seriously!), I love Spiru-tein protein powder for their AMAZING flavors, beans and lentils and tofu πŸ™‚

  7. wait. your trader joes have peanut flour??? no fair. ours doesn’t. i heard it was discontinued. i want to try peanut flour so bad, but am being stubborn and don’t want to buy it online. i HATE shipping costs. grrr.

i find it funny and ironic you say you’re an overstuffer. Matt made a burrito last night and as i watched him “try” to assemble it, i said “there is NO way you are going to get that to close” he walked into the room VERY proud and said “look i got it closed” it as the biggest.burrito.ever. love it!! and i love youuuu.

have a great day doll ♥

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Sounds like a typical man! They’re so proud of their accomplishments no matter how big, small, or burrito shaped, huh? πŸ˜‰ Love it!

And the peanut flour is from my “stash” that I’ve been hoarding for months now. I’m getting ready to bite the bullet and order it online though since I’m almost out…I hate shipping, but I’ll hate my life if I’m forced to go without it! Haha!

  8. Missy says:

Oohh I need to do the cinnamon and/or pumpkin pie spice in my coffee again – it’s been way too long! Ive done cocoa powder with a sprinkle of cinnamon too.

Pineapple and cottage cheese is my ABSOLUTE favorite combo. I nevah-evah get tired of it.
I’m a over stuffer as well – overstuff my food and my tummy πŸ™‚

I do try to get enough protein daily – my fave sources are cottage cheese, JayRobb whey protein powder, shrimp, chicken/ turkey breast, Greek yogurt and peanut flour.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ohhh, I need to try cocoa powder! What’s your favorite flavor of the Jay Robb’s? I tried the creamsicle, but I wasn’t that impressed with it. πŸ™

      • Missy says:

I love vanilla whey but strawbery is good too. Never had teh creamsicle. Kroger used to carry the sample packs, but mine does not anymore. Check yours and see!
I saw above where you may do the AboutTime protein. Right now, thru tomorrow, they are giving 40% off your order! Of course, you can always get the sample packs for 2.95 and free shipping. (I doubt the 40% applies to them!) but it makes the 39.99 2 lb around 24 bucks – just an FYI!
        This was their tweet:

Now through Saturday, get 40% OFF of your order of About Time using the code “EZWhey” when you check out!… http://fb.me/xxUjY6qT

  9. i never pay attention to the amount of protein that i get. but i do eat meat a couple times a week, and plenty of nut butters, beans, and eggs every day, so i’m not worried that i don’t get enough. i’ve never had problems with my iron levels.

    happy wiaw! πŸ™‚

  10. uh, can I please come over and be your eating buddy for a day? πŸ™‚ All your eats look fab!
I try to include some form of protein in every meal, but I don’t really keep count. I lovee trader joes peanut flour! I’m down to my last bag though and its so sad πŸ™ So i’m trying my best to make it last! haha πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh girl, I feel ya! I’m on my last bag now and there’s only about half of it left! Eeek! I’m actually online now narrowing down which brand I’m gonna order to be it’s replacement! Fingers crossed that I won’t be disappointed!

  11. Lauren says:

I bought okra a few weeks ago and ate a raw one. When I told my mom (who’s from New Orleans), she looked like she wanted to disown me πŸ˜› I love cottage cheese, but never remember to buy it! I usually don’t pay attention to my protein consumption, but my family likes to harass me about how I get enough every time I go somewhere with them and don’t eat meat. So annoying!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ugh, it kills me how people immediately think meat when they hear the word protein! I know how frustrating that is to hear…I eat meat, but only on occasion. I think I’ve finally convinced my co-workers to leave me alone about it!

Too funny about the okra! I guess from your mom’s perspective, if it’s not in gumbo, it’s just not right, huh? πŸ˜‰

  12. Dang girl, way to get in the protein!!! I try to make sure I’m getting in protein at every meal, because sometimes its just kind of HARD when vegetarian options are limited. If I’m home it’s not usually an issue but dining out can get tricky. I try to make sure I’m getting ~80g, especially if it’s a gym day!

  13. Side note: for the last like, 3 months I totally THOUGHT I was subscribed to your blog and I kept wondering how I was missing your posts. Reality: I’m an idiot and I had typed your url in wrong. LAME! I’m now officially a subscriber πŸ˜‰ haha

  14. lindsay says:

i love it! Peanut flour is definitely a favorite protein source right now. It just goes with EVERYTHING! i’d say salmon is my second favorite.

  15. I love the look of your breakfast burrito πŸ™‚ I’m normally put off by the addition of beans (not a fan of the texture) but your fillings sound delicious!

I love peanut flour for protein too – I usually top my smoothies with a peanut flour sauce. I love eggs too – scrambled, poached, omelette etc, all delicious! I don’t really pay attention to my protein count that closely, but I do eat a decent amount of protein in at least two of my main meals each day. It usually balances out πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Always nice to see another egg lover out there! And you know, I don’t think I’ve ever put beans in my bfast burritos…I usually cram it so full of veggies that I don’t think there’d be any more room! Haha!

  16. I do watch my protein and I have to agree that TJ’s peanut flour is my favorite source…that and eggs! Sadly, I’m on my last back of peanut flour. I need to find another brand for my addiction!

  17. Raw okra? I’ve never heard of eating such a thing! Although I’m just now getting on board for steamed or roasted okra vs. fried so maybe I’m just a little slow on okra trends.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yeah, I’m a little weird…don’t think I’ve ever found another person that likes it raw…I’m either extremely lazy or a genius…I prefer to think the latter! πŸ˜‰ It’s especially good dipped in sunflower seed butter!

  18. Lizzie says:

i try to get as much protein as a can everyday–but i dont count!!
    im guessing i get around 80grams a day πŸ˜›

  19. Nice! It’s quite interesting how much protein you managed to get without any meat! I’m always concerned about my protein consumption

  20. Brittany says:

I JUST put cinnamon in my coffee for tomorrow morning, I’m excited to try it!! πŸ˜€ Your meals look awesome! I don’t pay attention to my protein but I always get in protein at every meal.

  21. Love that you put your protein stats in red ! Protein is the one thing I love to “count”, the bigger the number, the better ! (Which is way more fun that counting calories !) This all looks yum. xx

  22. First off (even though it was last in your post) where are you still getting TJs peanut flour???? meh. Also, you know how you can make sauce from peanut flour? I have been wanting to try it with coconut flour and you’ve done it! How did it turn out? I love mixing teas- I most always do this. I always have a green tea with something else.
and those camalback waterbottles are the most wonderful things. I can sit and read with the straw in my mouth and suck the whole thing up in no time!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! I do that all the time with my water bottle!

The peanut flour is from a stash I got back in February…on my last package though and it’s dwindling away faster and faster! I still can’t believe they discontinued it! I’ve already got a few different brands I’m looking at ordering from Amazon.com for when it’s all gone….though I’m sure it won’t be the same! πŸ™

The coconut flour sauce was perfect…it has more of a gritty texture than a peanut flour sauce and it requires a little more liquid but definitely tasty! Have you ever tried making Sarena’s coconut cream (http://www.thenondairyqueen.com/2010/04/almond-buckwheat-pancakes-with-coconut.html)? I love using it as a topper for my pancakes and it’s great on oats too!

  23. Rach says:

    Cinnamon in the coffee? Brilliant!

  24. I do the same thing to my coffee! I used to just stir it in with sugar but it never mixes well, so brewing it with the grounds is the way to do it πŸ™‚

I don’t really keep track of my protein, but I used to and I was actually surprised at how much I ate!

  25. I make sure I get in enough protein each day… it really helps with my energy levels! You did a great job today πŸ™‚

  26. Every now and then I try to figure out how much protein I get and find it’s not all that much. :\ I really should pack in the protein a little more. Perhaps that’s why I feel so sluggish at times.

  27. DO WANT PANCAKES NOOOOOAW! yummeh eats! definatly gonna have to give your topping a whirl, I seem to be putting Cinnamon on/in everything I consume at the moment, didnt think about my cup o’ joe… your frickin’ genius! xxxx

  28. Your breakfast and dinner look especially delicious! πŸ™‚ I look at protein counts in foods but I don’t actually keep a tally of it.

  29. All of your eats look soo good. I love protein packed meals, they keep me full and prevent me from over eating. My favorite source of protein is currently parmesan cheese & beans πŸ™‚
