A Time of Mourning…

If I could, I’d like to ask everyone to take a small moment of silence…

To remember a good friend of mine.

A friend who has always been there when I needed him, never letting me down even once.

What they say is true…death knows no age.

And at the ripe age of 3 years old, I regret to say that Fred is no longer with us…

Poor Fred.

With his worn-off labeling, his cracking buttons, and scratched up bowl…

He was truly loved.

It all happened so fast…

One minute we’re getting ready to share in some Red Velvet Cake

And the next…

It’s all fun and games until somebody loses an eye a rim.

I tried to do my best to remember (and cherish) the good times we had together…

Our massive smoothie bowls:

The Great Pumpkin Green Smoothie

Adventures in burger making:

Edamame-Millet Burgers

The sauces we whipped up:

“Pizza Pizza” Cashew Cheese

Vegan Broccoli ‘n Cheese Sauce

Raw Avo-fredo Sauce

The dips we delighted in:

Vegan Cheeseburger Dip

Carrot Cake Hummus

Kalamata Olive Hummus

Mint Chocolate Chip Hummus

All the cookies we shared:

Carrot Cake “Cookies”

Everything-but-the-Sugar Cookies

PB&J Hummus Balls

And who could forget those times he looked the other way when I came at him with my spatula:

Maple Cinnamon Peanut Butter

But even after all that [mouth-watering] reminiscing, I’ll admit it…I just don’t handle these things well…so today, I went out, looking for a way to soothe my pain…

I ended up at the grocery store…
where foodie “retail therapy” ensued.

Walking numbly up and down the aisles, boxes, jars, and packages were lackadaisically tossed into the buggy until something caught my eye…

What is this? A waffle maker? For only FOURTEEN bucks?

So sleek, so shiny…I mean, look at it…it’s damn near SPARKLING!

And whaddaya know, this Pancake Queen CAN make waffles!

With death comes new life.

RIP Fred!

What do you think…traditional burial or cremation? 😉
I would send him out to sea but unfortunately I live in a landlocked state!

What is your MOST used kitchen appliance?

OH NO!!!!! I would be CRUSHED if my FP/blender died! I have a Magic Bullet… and without a doubt it is the best thing I have ever owned for my kitchen. Honestly I like it as much if not more than my Vitamix. (blasphemy, I know!). When my last Bullet died, I was out shopping within hours. Gotta love that foodie retail therapy! LOL! I came home with a new bullet and some new mini tart pans. ^_^

Looking forward to seeing more waffle posts – I <3 my waffle maker, too!

Oh gosh, if I didn’t have my Bullet (even though he HAS seen better days) I would need to be committed! It’ll tide me over for a while, but since I like to make smoothies the size of my head, I know I need to find a Fred #2 for sure! Contemplating a Vitamix but I’m worried it won’t be as versatile. How do you like yours?

      • Jessica says:

Honestly, I really do love it, but the versatility is what kindof disappoints me about it. I find it easier to make nut butters and fruit ice creams in my FP or even my bullet with the flat blade… It took me 15 minutes to make almond butter and it ended up crumbly and pretty dry! The coconut butter I tried to make just ended up… well… burnt. 🙁 Haha. I think because of the shape the vitamix requires more liquids to get things moving, which I don’t always want to do. But I will say that the texture of smoothies in the Vitamix is AMAZING!! It’s like buttah! And it makes sauces in 10 seconds, and I even whipped egg whites to make meringues in mine (low speed!).

Really though, for the price, I honestly would recommend a mini FP and a MB before I’d tell someone to spend for a Vitamix, unless you just have cash to blow or a ton of people to cook for! LOL! I just cook for myself so the Vitamix is almost overkill. [PLEASE NOTE: This is coming from the QUEEN of kitchen gadgets. I know people absolutely RAVE about the Vitamix, but I can in all honesty compare it to my Magic Bullet and say that if it came down to it, I’d take the bullet over the Vitamix! O_O That’s just my opinion though and it really will vary based on what you wanna do with your blender 🙂 ) Hope that helps a little!

Thank you SO much Jessica! This is probably the first REAL review I’ve heard that wasn’t just “Oh I love my Vita! You should DEFINITELY get one!” I mean, really? I need a little more than that before I go plop down $500 on a blender! And I just KNOW I’d probably end up feeling the same way as you. That little Bullet can surprise you! And since I don’t make extravagant smoothies on a regular basis, I figured it’d be best to save my pennies instead of throwing them into a fancy schmancy blender.

Here’s hoping I made the right decision in purchasing “Debbie”…I’ve yet to give her a go yet, but I’m crossing my fingers that she blows my mind! Lol

Oh and you MUST name your favorite kitchen appliances! I’m convinced that they work better when they feel accepted and have a name! 😉 My Bullet’s is Bulley…I know, soooo original, but hey, it just fits! 😉

      • Jessica says:

P.S. I’m going to have to name my Bullet, now!

  2. Aw poor Fred. Whatever will you name the new waffle maker. $14, what a steal!!

  3. Meg says:

awwww sweetie!!!!!!! I am soooo sorry for your loss!!!!!!! <3 HUGS XO

    love you Heather

  4. I freaking love you for this post and I’m so sad to see Fred go. 🙁

I’m already sad for the day that I lost my coffee pot. When his time comes, it’s going to be a sad one in this house.

  5. Emily says:

Hahaha! I’m definitely not laughing at the death of Fred…poor guy. I’m laughing because this post is absolutely adorable. I always name inanimate objects- particularly kitchen tools. It makes me love them even more.
I can’t believe you found a waffle-maker for $13 though! When one door closes, another opens, right? (:

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Exactly! Haha! And yes, I DEFINITELY love my named appliances more…and I’m convinced they work better…I think it’s a whole “acceptance after adoption” thing! 😉

  6. Oh,I managed to kill my food processor whilst making sunflower seed butter… You better believe that I almost cried – not only because of the food processor but also because of the sunflower seed butter which wasn’t even ready. Double fail!
Anyhoo,I WANT A WAFFLE MAKER! These things are so. darn. amazing.!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Noooooooo! What a tragedy!! At least I was able to salvage my smoothie at the time…I swear I don’t know WHAT I would’ve done had I not had my little Magic Bullet to save the day! 🙁

I know, right? I’ve wanted a waffle maker for over a year now! Do you know how long it’s going to take me to catch up with that?! Lol

  7. Oh noooo! Poor Fred! 🙁 At least he enjoyed a happy and food-filled life though, right? 😉

That’s awesome about your waffle maker steal though! I’m super jealous.

  8. Lee says:

Some brands sell the parts to the food processor on their websites so you don’t have to buy a whole new one. The bowl of mine (it was Black & Decker, or is, rather) cracked and I was able to just buy a new bowl for like $8, i think.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmmm, I wondered about that. I’ll have to look and see since I’m still…preserving Fred’s body! 😉 Thanks girlie!

  9. Haha, on no!! Not Fred!!! I treasure my mini food processor… I can’t imagine life without it… dicing, chopping and pureeing food by hand like some kind of animal?! No thanks….

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“…dicing, chopping and pureeing food by hand like some kind of animal?!” <- Bahaha!! Omg, we would never make it in the "olden days"!! 😉

  10. OH no! My food processor broke as well and it was such a sad day when it did. The item I use most now is my George Foreman grill!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, gotta love those Foremans! I used to have one, but now I just use my grill pan/skillet for everything…basically the same thing…though it takes a little longer to make a good panini! 🙁

  11. elise says:

waffles!!!!! i love em. the butter and syrup gets all wedged into the nooks and crannies….sooo much better than pancakes (no offense).

    🙂

    PS RIP food processor…

  12. Awww poor girl!! I would gladly send you mine.. I am wishing it would break so I could get a new one. It doesn’t work very well. I would die without my pressure cooker I think… my life would be so much more complicated!

  13. Oh no! At least Fred got a lot of use out of him- and tasty food!

I don’t break out my waffle maker too often, but I really should – waffles are the bomb.

I probably use my Magic Bullet more than anything else – I love me a breakfast smoothie.

  14. Kammie says:

Noooo, Fred 🙁 so sad. That sucks. I hate when things break. But at least you used it well, oh well! On to the next one 😉

  15. Hahaha could you be any more adorable?! Haha aww your poor food processor!!!

  16. Kendra says:

Awww…poor Fred. May he rest in peace. Haha, you never fail to brighten my day with your humorous posts!! Oh, and all those recipes look fantastic; it makes me want to whip them all up today in a frenzied cooking marathon–if only I had the time:D Wow, that is one CHEAP waffle maker!! You are so lucky to have found such an inexpensive one…My most used kitchen appliance is probably my Cuisinart food processor–I use it for SO many recipes! Though I do love our Vitamix as well; it is great for making delicious green smoothies (NOT so great for homemade nut butters, hummus, and other such things, though).

    • Jessica says:

Kendra – I’m somewhat relieved to know that I’m not the only one that feels that way about the Vitamix! I thought maybe I was insane. Lol!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks Kendra! If I’ve brought a smile to just ONE face, then I know I’ve done my job! 😀 I get that way all the time with some of my favorite bloggers…I just want one FULL day to try every recipe I possibly can…and then I have MY OWN recipes that I want to make! Lol There just aren’t enough hours/meals in the day! Lol

So glad to hear you use your food processor more than your Vita. I really contemplated splurging and going with the celebrity of all blenders, but after I thought about the kinds of things I like to make, I figured I’d probably be better off with just getting another food processor (I like smoothies, but I don’t think I make them enough to justify purchasing a $500 smoothie maker!). Then I just HAPPENED to luck up and find Debbie…a food processor AND blender in one! My mind was blown instantly! 😉 I can’t wait to try her out!

  18. What the WHAT. Mint Chocolate Chip Dessert Hummus??? Are. You. Serious.

I need this now. Fred – you will be missed, but I don’t have time to mourn. I’m stuffing my face with this deliciousness.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Love it! Definitely one of my FAVORITE dessert hummus concoctions. I used green food coloring at the time, but after making my Mint Chocolate Chip Parfait, I’m thinking you might could get away with adding greens to it instead! 😉
