Pyramid-O-Protein…Ice Cream!

Happy Friday my little half pints!

Well, I finally managed to get my bag packed last night this morning and I’m just about ready to head out the door to meet up with Allie for our trip to Atlanta, but before I go…

I have something special for you guys!

About a month ago, I contacted Arctic Zero about doing a review of their “ice cream” for the blog. If you’ve never heard of Arctic Zero, you are surely missing out. Their trademark phrase in advertising says it all:

“A protein shake in ice cream form”

It is most definitely NOT ice cream, but for those of you who are, like me, a little lactose challenged and/or looking for a sweet treat that won’t weigh you down, Arctic Zero has the solution:

A WHOLE pint of “ice cream” with 14 grams of protein, 8 grams of fiber and ONLY 150 calories!

Behold, my pyramid-o-protein…ICE CREAM! 😀

Before their arrival, I had tried every flavor except for the chocolate peanut butter, chocolate, and pumpkin spice. Since I usually only “treat” myself to a pint every so often, I was super excited to have all the flavors at hand so that I could hold an official
“quality testing” event! 😉

So without further adieu, here are the results of my “testing”:

CHOCOLATE
Out of the bunch, I thought this one had the least flavor to it. It tasted muted and a bit watered down. I know I’m not really a fan of chocolate, but I also know the difference between GOOD chocolate and “healthified” chocolate.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER
Same thing goes for “healthified” peanut butter flavor. It had only the slightest hint of peanut butter taste along with that same watered down chocolate flavor. A step up from the plain chocolate, but I’d rather just have the real deal when it comes to my precious peanut butter.

PUMPKIN SPICE
Obviously, I had high expectations for this one. As long as you keep in mind that it is called pumpkin “spice” and NOT pumpkin “pie”, it’s pretty tasty with it’s hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the thought of creamy silky pumpkin pie out of my head so I was a little disappointed at first, but it grew on me.

VANILLA MAPLE
This one has always been a favorite of mine. In fact, it was the very FIRST flavor of Arctic Zero that I ever tried. It has just the right amount of sweetness and the hint of maple really makes it. All the other flavors I tend to enjoy by themselves, but I love pairing this one with some crunchy granola!

STRAWBERRY
I had heard a lot of people say the strawberry tasted bad, so I was a bit leery to try it at first, but I ended up loving it! To me, it tastes like a cross between ice cream and sorbet. It has little strawberry seeds throughout and a very fresh taste but still has a hint of creaminess.

 MINT CHOCOLATE COOKIE
Out of the three chocolate flavors, this one is my favorite! Honestly, it is more minty than chocolate-y (perhaps that’s why I like it) but I love how the taste of the mint isn’t too strong.

COOKIES & CREAM
Once I got over my alarm from the gray color, I fell in LOVE with this one! The chocolate-y creamy combo is so surprisingly perfect…makes you wonder how they do it without any actual cookies (mmm, cookies…)

COFFEE
Last, but CERTAINLY not least…my favorite one! Are you surprised? The coffee flavor is perfect and it doesn’t have that weird aftertaste that sometimes comes with coffee-flavored treats. Now all I need to do is plop a spoonful on top of some
Tiramisu Protein Pancakes and I’m set! 😀

Arctic Zero is available in many grocery stores around the US or you can purchase it online through their Amazon store.

  1. I love your honest review. the Vanilla Maple is my fav too. The chocoalte PB was the biggest disappointment… but somethings just aren’t meant to be made healthy.

Now, turn off the computer and COME SEE ME!!!

  2. Kate says:

    ahhh pumpkin spice sounds AMAZING!

  3. Kimberly says:

LOVE arctic zero. Didn’t know there was pumpkin spice..yum!

  4. Kaitlin says:

Ooh, Arctic Zero! I have tried the choc + PB and Cookies and Cream, and you are totally right– once I got past the gray color of the Cookies and Cream, it was great!! I have been dying to try the Pumpkin Spice but they don’t have it in my grocery store!

  5. Renee says:

Wow, they sure do have a lot of flavors! Such an awesome giveaway 🙂

  6. Rachel says:

These look SO amazing, if I had to pick one it would be the coffee flavor!!

  7. Lauren says:

    Pumpkin spice sounds delicious!

  8. Aly Haebig says:

    I want coffee!!!! 🙂

  9. Lauren says:

    Chocolate Peanut butter!

  10. I’ve only ever tried the vanilla maple, I really enjoy when I see reviews that are not all “oh my god I love this product, yes, it’s made with dog food, but it tastes so good…..” blah…have a great time on your trip! I’m always envious of you lucky bloggers that get to spend time with each other in real life 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! I know, right? I hate it when people just gloss over a review and say that everything was good just because they feel obligated to say so. The company understands that not everyone is going to have the same tastes…that’s why there are other flavors to choose from!

Wish I could have beamed you to Atlanta this weekend…you would have DIED at the farmer’s market! #funfinds GALORE! 😀

  11. I want them all AND for someone to call me half-pint every day!

  12. betty says:

anything mint choc chips sounds AMAZING to me!! yum!!

  13. Emily says:

I’ve only tried the Chocolate PB Flavor of Arctic Zero and I wasn’t a huge fan. But, based on your review, I definitely need to give the other flavors a chance! Coffee and Vanilla Maple sound scrumptious!

  14. Esther says:

    Cookies and cream!

  15. Ack! Hard to choose just one flavor. Think I’d have to go with mint chocolate chip at this moment. But I’m totally in pumpkin mode, so the pumpkin spice is probably an incredibly close 2nd.

  16. I’ve tried Arctic Zero a couple of times. Gimme that Chocolate Mint!

  17. Holy, that’s a whole lot of ice cream! I would probably like the mint one…

  18. Kelly says:

yummmmmm! pumpkin, choc pb, cookies & cream, starwberry…..sounds like lots of my favorite things in “healthy ice cream form”, which sounds amazing to me! would love to try any of them:)

  19. Dolly says:

I’ve recently started a diet and I am down 5 pounds! I would love a chance to try this Ice Cream. It is a weakness 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

That’s awesome, Dolly! Congratulations on the weight loss! If you have a soft spot for ice cream, these would definitely be something worth trying!

  20. I love the chocolate peanut butter arctic zero but I’d love to try some of the other flavors! My whole foods only carries a few! The cookies and cream sounds great to me!

  21. Beth says:

I used to buy this at my local Whole Foods but they don’t stock it anymore 🙁 I’d love to try the pumpkin spice!

  22. Kelsey says:

    Vanilla maple sounds amazing!!!

  23. Sarah says:

OOOO I just ADORE Arctic Zero. I would love to try the Cookies and Cream and Coffee. Favorite is the Vanilla Maple, of course I’m limited to flavors at my local Whole Foods. So to have all 8 would be amazing and potentially dangerous haha. 😀

  24. Carinne says:

It’s so refreshing to read your honest reviews of this product (along with the Quest bars one I read the other day). I have only tried the Maple Vanilla and I loved it!! I haven’t been able to find any other flavors where I live.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you Carinne! I feel it’s only right to give my true opinion of products that I try. I hate it whenever I read reviews from other bloggers and they just say “oh everything was great”…I mean, what’s the point, right?

  25. Rebecca says:

    Pumpkin spice!

  26. sarah says:

I love vanilla maple!! I really liked pumpkin spice too. I want to try the coffee!

  27. Nicole W. says:

    Coffee

  28. Kyla says:

Oh my gosh I LOVE arctic zero! I go so far out of my way to get my hands on a pint… I’ve never found pumpkin spice though, so id love to try that one!

  29. Kelsey says:

Ice cream is my favorite treat! I’d love to be able to eat it and not feel as guilty about it!

  30. Carly says:

Oh my goodnees. I have wanted to try Arctic Zero for soo long but there’s no way I can get it in Australia!
I’m really keen on trying the coffee flavor, vanilla maple in close second!

  31. Awesome giveaway girly! I use to eat Arctic by the pint on a regular basis until I realized that it wasn’t the most friendly purchase to my bank account… I’d love to try the vanilla maple- classic deliciousness!!!

  32. Emily says:

Based on your review, I’d like to try the Vanilla Maple, but I’m a sucker for all things seasonal, so bring on the pumpkin!

  33. 91% Chocolate Lover says:

Have to go seasonal- pumpkin spice!

  34. jenna k says:

the cookies and cream sounds great! i LOVE cookies and cream. i’ve read several different reviews, and everyone has basically said that you have to get used to it, and then it’s good.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yeah, I’ll admit the very first time I tried it, I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not. You just have to go in with an open mind and NOT think it’s going to taste like ice cream. It’s different…but DELICIOUS! And the cookie and cream was actually the creamiest of them all! I think you’d be a fan!

  35. megan says:

i LOVE arctic zero — coffee is my favorite too 🙂
i am a certified pumpkin-holic (is that a word?) and i am dying to try the pumpkin spice flavor… hope i win! thanks for hosting this giveaway!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Pumpkin-holic? Most definitely a word…especially when it comes to us food bloggers…we tend to be a bit obsessed, no? 😉 Good luck!

  36. Raymond says:

Strawberry gets my vote! My favorite fruit flavor – thanks!

  37. kolya says:

You have NO idea how much I would love this…I am addicted to this stuff and my budget only allows a pint once in a while. Plus I can never find pumpkin!!!! Oh I so hope I win (:

  38. Caitlin F. says:

I’ve been wanting to try the Coffee and Vanilla Maple flavors! Chocolate mint wasn’t my favorite, but for 150 calories I can’t complain.

  39. I’ve only tried chocolate, which I liked – but would love to test out the vanilla maple!

  40. Ruta says:

I don’t actually like pumpkin pie, so I think the pumpkin spice flavor sounds awesome. Like fall and summer combined!

  41. Glen says:

I really want to try the vanilla maple!!

  42. I don’t think you understand how much I would give to win this, I ADORE THEM ALL but can’t buy them because they are freaking expensive. I love the pumpkin spice one, like drool

  43. I’ve always wanted to try the pumpkin.. I can never find it. Coffee is amazing too!

  44. I want to try cookies and cream for sure!!!

  45. OH.EM.GEE! Yes, puhh-leeeease! Chocolate peanut butter sounds right up my alley! 😉

    YUM COFFEE!!

  48. Emily says:

The Vanilla Maple and the Coffee both sound amazing!

  49. karina says:

arctic zero how i love thee! I haven’t bought it in awhile though due to the price tag :(……i’d love to try the pumpkin spice!

  50. Laurel C says:

Oh my god I eat this every night!!!!!! I would be ecstatic if I won!!! I’ve had all of the flavors, but my favorite is definitely cookies and cream!

  51. Kristen says:

I’ve had the mint one! I’d LOVEEEEEE the pumpkin spice!

  52. Billie Jean says:

The coffee or cookies and cream!

  53. Ellyn says:

  57. Jenn says:

They do not sell the pumpkin around here, but I’m dying to try it! Looks sooo good.

  58. Jordan D says:

I’ve tried and loved the mint chocolate, but am dying to taste the vanilla maple and pumpkin flavors!

  59. I’ve had most of the flavors but really want to try pumpkin spice!

  60. These sound too good to be true. Why do I have to live in the UK?

  61. Allie says:

I want to try chocolate PB…oh wait, I already know it’s awesome 😉 I do want to try the strawberry!

  62. I love anything and everything pumpkin, so I would want to try that Pumpkin Spice first, BUT they all look amazing. And such a fabulous alternative to ice cream, which is my biggest weakness.

  63. Ashley says:

    Vanilla Maple.. mmm.

I do want to point out this article.. it was on the Today Show: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/48596412/ns/today-today_rossen_reports/t/rossen-reports-can-you-believe-diet-frozen-dessert-labels/#.UJ5NZo4f5t8

Also, does anyone else get really bad, er… gas after eating this?! I’ve tracked it down to the chicory root fiber. I love Arctic Zero, but if I inhale half (or a whole!) pint, I definitely pay for it later!! HAHA.

    • Ashley says:

Oh, and p.s. November 16 is Friday 😉

    • OH MY GOLL! That must have been what caused my excruciating stomach pains! (See my comment below. :))

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’m glad you pointed that out, Ashley. After the Today Show released the lab results, Arctic Zero actually contacted the same lab crew and had them do some independent testing. They ran a new test on each flavor and it showed that the stats are in fact correct. You can read more about it here: http://www.myarcticzero.com/labresults.php I love how the company took so much initiative to ensure the quality of their product AND the satisfaction and peace of mind of the consumers…definitely something you can feel good about!

And honestly, I did have a reaction similar to yours…but only once. I just figured it was something else I ate (or the fact that I topped my pint with an obscene amount of Lucky Charms marshmallows (yes, just the marshmallows ;)). That was the first time I’d ever eaten a whole pint in one sitting. I’ve had it since then without any trouble so I’m not sure what caused the tummy woes that specific time, but I know my body is a bit sensitive to fiber so it wouldn’t surprise me if it had something to do with the chickory root. I have some GNU bars that use that ingredient and sometimes it bothers me (again, not all the time…ugh, why are our bodies so fickle?).

Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the date…I swear, working the night shift, I get so confused sometimes! Lol

      • Ashley says:

Ahhh, thank you for showing me that link! I was SO SAD when I saw that Today Show segment. I can go back to feeling no guilt when I eat an entire pint! If only I could lose the gassy feeling afterwards :-p Oh well–it’s so worth it!

        Thanks again!

        • kissmybroccoli says:

You’re welcome! I had actually not seen the segment and only heard about it through Arctic Zero. I’m so glad they pointed that out because I know if I had seen the show, I would be just as concerned.

And…well, it makes me feel like an old lady to admit this, but sometimes I pop a couple of Beano pills before I eat something that has a lot of fiber in it (my stomach is a bit sensitive sometimes) and it seems to help. Maybe try it with the AZ? 🙂

  64. Julia says:

Oooh yum I’d love to try the coffee one!

  65. Georgiana says:

Definitely Pumpkin to spice up the holidays! That sounds delicious with a scoop on top of pumpkin pie!

  66. I’m not gonna lie…post-vegan month of food (the first time) I ate the Pumpkin Spice, loved it, and then spent the evening in excruciating stomach pain. I don’t know if it is because of the Arctic Zero, or because of something else, but I would love to try it again. The chocolate peanut butter is a sad disappointment, but I do think the mint tastes like a Thin Mint. 🙂 I’d love to try the Coffee!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Like I just told Ashley, the same thing happened to me the first time I ate an entire pint in one sitting, but like you, I just attributed it to other things. Since then, I’ve eaten the same amount without any problems, so I’m still not really sure if it was the AZ or not. So weird!

I know you…you will LOVE the coffee!

  67. Kayla says:

I would LOVE to try the vanilla maple and coffee flavors!

  68. I almost bought the pumpkin spice the other day! I’ve tried the chocolate mint and thought it was pretty good. Not ice cream but still good. I’d love to try some of the other flavors though 🙂

I have wanted to try these – but was concerned about the issue with the calorie counts being way undercalculated. However, I still would try them and I think I would like vanilla maple the best.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I really think you’ll like them Missy! And if you’re referring to the lab results from the Today Show, Arctic Zero actually had the same lab crew do some independent testing and the results came back positively. They are now running more and more quality tests just to be sure that that doesn’t change. Good to know a company cares so much about their product AND their consumers to do all of that, right? 😀

my favorite is the maple vanilla with a tbsp of PB2 powder sprinkled on top with some pink salt…sounds kinda weird but delish! I also have tried it with a tbsp SF pistachio pudding powder (or your favorite flavor) yummo!!! if your wanting to go “all out” top with FF cool whip and rainbow or chocolate sprinkles 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Not weird at all! I love doing that too! Have you ever tried sprinkling peanut flour (or PB2) on top of a bowl of cereal? Don’t stir it up…sounds weird, but the bites with little clumps of wet powder are the best! I’ll have to try that with the pudding mix…sounds amazing!

      • Danielle Smith says:

Ooo… on the cereal sounds good! I also have used the Pb2 powder mixed with aminos and a little powdered mushroom gravy and a bit of red chili sauce pour over saute mushrooms, onion, water chestnuts… use as lettuce wraps or serve with skinny noodles. Talk about a low cal peanut sauce.
