WIAW: The Animal Edition

Happy Wednesday people!

Grab your hats and noise makers and tie on that bib! It’s time to get this party started! And today? Well today, we’re taking a little foodie field trip to the zoo…or maybe the farm…heck, let’s do BOTH!

Last Friday, I woke up a bit later than I intended. With an appointment at 9am, I ran around like a CHICKEN with my head cut off trying to get out of the house in 30 minutes. Luckily, it only took me about 3 minutes to inhale breakfast…

Banana Oikos Yogurt with Peanut Butter Dots Cereal

I’ve been feeling like a MONKEY lately with my newfound love for Oikos’s Banana Greek yogurt…especially topped with peanut butter cereal (from Food Lion)! And don’t let that bag of coffee in the background fool ya…starting last week, my therapist has “advised” me to stay away from my boyfriend Joe while we heal up other matters of the heart circadian cycle. 😉

Earl Grey Lavender Black Tea

So, I begrudgingly happily fixed a cup of this new-to-me Earl Grey and rushed out the door (only to end up drinking half the cup before I forgot about it and it got cold…#fail)

Back at the house a couple of hours later and throughout the afternoon, I was back to my BIRD-eating ways…

Baked Cookie Dough Quest Bar.

A PERFECTLY baked cookie dough Quest bar around 11am

Walk at the Park - Book

And a crunchy Pink Lady apple on my walk at the park around 1pm

Back from the park and FINALLY feeling my appetite coming on, I whipped up a quick salad around 3pm and enjoyed it while sitting on the back patio!

Chicken Sausage Salad

Spinach topped with steamed kabocha, sautéed onions, spinach and fontina CHICKEN sausage and more cheese in the form of grated parm…because this MOUSE will ALWAYS take extra cheese! 😉

On a whim, I decided to go sweat like a PIG at a hot yoga class that night…midway through class, I realized it wasn’t such a good idea to eat onions two hours before sweating anything and everything out of my body…oops?

When I got back from class and showered up, I actually wasn’t feeling all that hungry, but veggies sounded good so I made myself a little RABBIT fare…

Veggies & Pretzel Mustard Dip

Broccoli and carrot sticks with the most amazing mustard dip ever invented (TJ Maxx find). And then a couple of hours later, before I hopped (ha, see what I did there?) into bed, I decided to have a little “dessert”

Kabocha with Almond & Coconut Butter

The rest of my steamed kabocha from lunch topped with almond and chocolate coconut butter. Not exactly the prettiest thing to look at, but delicious all the same!

At the end of the day, I realized that I really didn’t eat all that much. You guys know how I feel about judgment and comparison and how it has no place here on WIAW, but I still couldn’t help but think maybe I should try to share a day where I had more of an appetite. Never really knowing what the day will hold when it comes to food (can I get a heck yeah for intuitive eating!?), I decided to photograph the next day’s eats…

WIAW Teal

Just swing, fly, or hop yourself on over to Peas & Crayons to check out my guest post and see just what the next day held…serving to prove EXACTLY what I’ve been saying all along…the body truly KNOWS how to balance itself. You just have to trust it!

What is your spirit animal?
I’m a swan! Hey, wait a minute, does that mean I was once an ugly duckling?! 😯

No judgement here! Just jealous I can’t find kabocha squash!!

  2. Brittany says:

Hey, it happens! Some days I eat way more, and some days I eat less. That’s just the way it goes;) I looove kabocha, I haven’t been able to find it in forever!

  3. I have got to try baking a Quest bar. I’ve microwaved them before and it was amazing, so I can only imagine how yummy a baked one is!

  4. I’m an owl! Good to know…although I’m not nearly as nocturnal as I was when I was younger.

  5. Nichole C says:

Oh man, cereal over Greek yogurt?! Awesome idea!

  6. I’m a horse and you are my best match! When’s our wedding??

  7. You and your WIAW themes always crack me up. And I beg to differ, that kabocha bowl absolutely looks pretty, or more like freaking amazing.

  8. That salad looks amazing!! And you remind me of my husband, he is always loading on the cheese!

  9. That kabocha is VERY lovely! How dare you talk about it like that?! Also, you have impressed me with your dual WIAW posts.

    Come see meeeee!

  10. Obviously I took the spirit animal quiz and I am a wolf! I’m totes cool with that. “Family and friends come first” sounds about right to me. Also – how long do you bake your quest bars for?? I’ve only microwaved mine I feel like I’m missing out!

I usually put them in at 350F and just let them go until they start to turn brown…I don’t let the oven preheat first so maybe like 10 minutes all together?

  11. Haha this cracked me up! I love Kabocha, but have not been able to find it this year 🙁 I took the quiz and I got a Cougar… hmm looks like I’m all set for the future!

    Hi Heather,

I’ve come across your blog every now and then through Peas & Crayons and greatly appreciate you sharing! No need to get personal here, but what problems are you having with your circadian cycle? I only ask because lately I feel like something might be off…maybe due to anxiety/stress or possibly something else. I have noticed when it gets bad, drinking tea in replace of coffee helps. But I was wondering what might be the problem. Did you therapist offer any advice?

    Thanks,

    Allison

    p.s. I’m from Nashville! 🙂

Thank you for your concern, Allison! And…it’s nice to “meet” you! 🙂 My problem has a lot to do with the fact that I work the night shift at the hospital. My insomnia seems to come in waves, but for the last several months, I’ve been having a lot of trouble getting a consistent amount of sleep…to the point where it’s affecting other areas of my life. My therapist has given me several tips (a lot of which I already knew and practiced) and we’ve even practiced a bit of hypnosis. I’m not a HUGE coffee drinker, usually only 1-2 cups of HALF caff a day, but he suggested that I swap it for tea for the time being just to see what happens. I’m just crossing my fingers at this point!

  13. I came up as a crow with swan at a close second. Fun quiz, thanks for sharing!

  14. That pretzel dip sounds awesome! And I’ve tried baking my quest bars a few times and each time it turned out all hard and so not good. Teach me your ways!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I usually set the oven to 350F and put the bar in right away. Then I just let it cook until it starts to turn golden brown…I think it’s usually about 10 minutes or so from the time it goes in the oven? Golden brown is the key…any darker and it gets all dry and crumbly!

  15. Oooo girl, you have the most creative mind I have ever witnessed through reading. I bet you’re just as creative in person! 😀

So. much. yumminess. in. this. post.

My spirit animal is a wolf!

  16. I literally need to get that honey mustard dip or I will die. Why isn’t there a TJ Maxx by meeeeee. Loved your post on Peas today, btw! A good followup to this one like you said.

  17. Chicken sausage, kabocha, and cheese is like the perfect salad! Love all those flavours!

    PS. I’m a wolf.

  18. Love the idea of chicken sausage in a salad. Why have I never tried that before? Looks great!

I’m pretty sure R2D2 is my spirit animal .

  19. That salad looks noms! And I’m pretty sure I have all that in my fridge right now…. so maybe lunch?! And that mustard dip sounds good! I find stuff at TJs and then get pissed if I really like something and can’t hunt it down again.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, ME TOO! There’s this roasted garlic and fig spread I found there once that was life changing! I even tried to find online…yep, totally DISCONTINUED! #fail

  20. Loved the correlation of eats between the two days and bravo for honouring your hunger as dictated by your body.

Now as for eating like a bird, then eating rabbit food…if I had the chance to eat a la heather, I’d gladly be either of those animals.

And baked quest bars. No words.

  21. I like the back to back WIAW’s. It reminds me of that time I posted an entire week of food. Holy crap was that a lot, but it also actually shows the ebbs and flows that come with eating. Some days are heavy and some days are light.

I’m still jealous of all your hot yoga-ing. It’s like you’re just flaunting that shit all over town. 😉
