California Friday #4: When Sea Lions Attack!

Can you believe we made it through a whole week?

Happy Friday, loves!

Was it just me or did this week seem to take about 732 days to come to an end?

I’ve been a little absent from blogworld this week, but I promise it has not been intentional. Even after taking off a couple of days to reclaim my sanity relax, it seems the hospital has become my own personal (pocket-sized, if you will) black hole…

Somebody please let me know if you see any fragments of my lifeforce floating around in the air so that I can try to super glue them back…and maybe Bedazzle them while I’m at it! 😉

Obviously, my life has been a bit on the boring side lately.

So how about some more vacation recapping?

Anyone up for some kayaking?

I was SOOOO excited when Emilia suggested that we check out Kayak Connection while we were on our way to the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. I’ve been canoeing and white water rafting before, but I’ve always wanted to try kayaking!

We watched a short informative video, you know:

What to do if you flip your kayack…
What to do if you lose your paddle…
What to do if you’re charged by angry sea lions…um, WHA?!

Oh wait, no, that one WASN’T in there, but I’m getting a little ahead of myself.

So we got fitted for our life vests, grabbed some paddles, and loaded up!

Row, row, row, your boat kayak…

Gently down the bay…

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily…

Someone’s head is in my way! 😉

The trip started out a bit foggy at first.

Can you make out the killer sea lions on the wharf?

But slowly the sun started to make it’s way from behind the clouds

And the wildlife came out to play!

I think their favorite game was “hide”

And “sneak”

🙂

After a couple of hours of photo-stalking sea lions, otters, and other aquatic life, we decided to head back to dock.

Say “impending doom is lurking ahead!”

As we made our way back around the bend, we were able to get a better look at the sea lions relaxing on the wharf.

Such cute little flubberous creatures, no?

Hmm, nice sign!

ADD moment of the day brought to you by:
“Oh look! An otter on the other side of the kayak!”

That I can’t seem to get a decent picture of.
Dude, pose already…you look like a washed up duffle bag!

Hmm, I wonder where those other people are running off to so fast?

Oh, hello sea lions! 🙂

Wait a minute, there’s not as much zoom on this camera as I thought there was!

That’s when we realized we had drifted to within oh, I’d say 10 feet of the wharf!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!! :-O

I’m sorry, my documentation of our near death experience as one of the heftier of the crew decided to make angry eyes (not to be confused with angry bananas) at us, dive off the wharf, and CHARGE our kayak!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! :-O

I’ll admit that there were a few choice expletives thrown in there as needed to help propel us further in the water as the adrenaline kicked in and we pumped out some of the smoothest strokes since Bob Ross…wait, wrong kind of strokes!

Lesson of the day: If you’re going to play around with the fight or flight tendencies of 500+ pound aquatic life, make sure to have a vegetarian close by to protect you!

😉

Ever had any “close encounters” with wildlife?

Were you lucky/stupid enough to get any documentation?

  3. Lauren says:

Hahaha, great story! How cute are sea lions?? I want one. Or I want to be one in my next life.

That looks like such a fun kayaking experience! Sea lions are the kind of animals that fool you. They look so nice from far away but up close they’re scary and mean!! I’ve only been kayaking once and it was in ALLIGATOR infested waters! Scared to death when the boy-friends brother started rocking the boat laughing. I would’ve died.

  5. Ahhhh I’ve never been to california so I’m SUPER jealous right now. Like for serious.

I haven’t had any crazy encounters with wildlife. Unless you count the time I was 9 and feeding hush puppies to a flock of geese and then they charged when I ran out of hush puppies. You better believe my 9 year old legs high tailed it out of there!

When Mike and I were in SanDiego we saw a beach with a whole bunch of sea lions just laying there, were so cute!!!!!

It was sad too, the beach they were on, I guess they wanted to get the sea lions off of it, so they had a stand where people were selling stuff to save the sea lions and to not remove them from that area, I hope they won, I felt bad : (

Love the kayaking fun! Kayaking is a super awesome workout ; )

    Happy Weekend!

Your comments made me so happy! I always look forward to them!

    xoxo <3

  7. i went to the MASAI MARA in kenya last year and i saw the most amazing wild life ever. I love nature! it looks like you had a great trip!

  8. Looks like you had a fun time!! 🙂

  9. Robyn :) says:

Oh my. Who knew those big lazy creatures were so agressive???

I actually do have documentation of being “attacked” by wildlife. I have an old 8mm home movie(now on VHS as well) of when I was about 2 being chased around a bench by an angry goose trying to peck me.

Hahahaha! I was once chased around a petting zoo by a baby deer when I was like four! Totally made me think of that!

  10. Kara says:

Bahaha! You’re hilarious! Those sea lions are dangerous! But the otters are sooo cute!

  11. Oh my! Haha.. So many sea lions!

  12. You’re awesome. 🙂
You totally captured the day and all of its essence, and I wouldn’t have depicted it better! I gotta say, that sea lion near death experience is one I will never forget. Someday, when I’m old and gray i’ll be telling my grand kids that story, hehe. One thing you forgot to mention….that crazy reception lady. She was beyond awful! 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Yeah, she was pretty bad, but no need to let her negativity bring down such a fun filled day, right? 🙂

  13. Hahaha that’s hilarious… and also a bit scary! I had no idea sea lions were so aggressive. 😛

I once encountered a bear when I was a camp counsellor… I’ve never run away so fast in my life!!!

  14. lizzie says:

you are making me SO excited to go to California in 3 weeks!
i’ve never been there before! it’s gonna b amazing!!!
what are some places that i should totally hit up?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

What part of California are you going to? San Francisco was an absolute BLAST even though I know I didn’t even scratch the surface as far as tourist attractions go, but the overall feel of the city, people, and food is amazing…you can just FEEL it!
