Thursday Things: Workouts, Snacks, and Lent

Hey guys!

I hope you are all having a fantastic week! Only one more day until the weekend!

I’m only hoping (praying) that the weather continues on like it was today:

Do I live in Tennessee or California? But believe me…I’m not complaining ONE bit!

So if there’s only one more day left in the workweek, you know what that means:

It’s time for KMB’s “Thursday Things”!

1. WORKOUTS

Yep, seems like I’ve jumped on the LiveFit bandwagon with the rest of blogland…

I was getting a little bored with my workout routines and decided last week to see what all the hype was about with the LiveFit Trainer. I watched Jamie Eason’s video explaining the details behind the workouts, meal plans, and supplements and decided to give it a go…

There was only ONE thing that bothered me about the program:

CARDIO

Jamie actually suggests not to do ANY kind of cardio during phase one. The runner in me heard this and was like, “Heck no! You can’t stop me from running!”

Well, that was last week…

I did an interval workout on the treadmill last Tuesday…only a little over 3.5 miles, but it was a nice sweaty run. Since then, the most cardio I’ve done is some warm up/cool down on the elliptical.

I’ve come to this conclusion:
It’s not, “No, you don’t HAVE to do cardio!”

It’s more like, “No, you WON’T BE ABLE TO DO CARDIO!”

I am sooooo tired! Lol

The majority of my workout experience in the past has been with Crossfit style workouts and other, high-intensity, cardio-infused workouts. This is actually the first time I’ve made a commitment to weight lifting…and you know what?

I may be tired…I may be sore (which I secretly like), but…

I FREAKIN’ LOVE IT!!

Do I look as badass as I feel? I hope so! πŸ˜‰

Not only am I breaking out of my element with the weight lifting, but I FINALLY overcame my fear of entering the weight room at the gym by myself!

It was a slow progression:

Maybe I was sneakily reading the direction sticker on the side of the equipment while I tried to look like I was just finding the appropriate weight…

Maybe I was also stalking some of the other gym patrons waiting for them to use said equipment so I knew what to do…

Maybe I wasn’t paying attention last week and took weight off some guy’s machine WHILE he was sitting on it to use for myself…

Oops!

Yeah, my face turned about 293864 shades of red! :-/

But now, I am excited to get to the gym, even during the busier hours, and squeeze in between the meat heads to get MY sweat on!

2. NEW SNACK ALERT:

I found these on sale the other day at my local grocery store and decided to pick one up.

HOLY MOTHER OF DELICIOUSNESS!

Has anyone tried these? After professing my love on Instagram, I found out that they also make a peanut butter and a vanilla that is to die for!

And speaking of peanut butter…

3. LENT:

So, I asked you guys the other day if you were giving up anything for Lent. Like I said the other day, I’m not Catholic, but I’m always up for a challenge and I think an occasional test of willpower is good for the soul. That being said, I finally decided what I was giving up yesterday morning…

Go ahead…call me crazy!

That’s right,

I’m giving up ALL nut butters!Β

No loop holes for legumes or soy-nut or cookie-based spreads. If it LOOKS like nut butter, it’s off limits…for FORTY DAYS!

I can do this…I can do this…I can do this!

I am such a dumbass, lol! I thought you were in cali! LOL! I was so jealous, left comment on your instagram pic, and I was confused as to how I did not know!

Love that bar, I had that once before, it was really good! They have other great flavors too!

    Happy Thursday! <3

  2. HOLY COW, you’re a brave one for giving up nut butters! I bet they will taste all the more delicious to you now after Lent! πŸ™‚

  3. I could NEVER give up nut butter. No way no how!

  4. PB&Jenny says:

I love you to the moon, Heather, but I just can’t support your decision. No nut butter? gah! You’ll be eating lots of chocolate, me thinks πŸ™‚ What about peanut butter flavored things?! πŸ™‚ (I’m looking at you, puffins)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, I had peanut flour in my oats yesterday so I guess peanut flavored things are ok…but nothing with actual peanut BUTTER in it! πŸ˜‰

  5. I love weights. It may be daunting getting started but they make you feel awesome πŸ˜€

  6. Seriously! Atlanta was freaking amazing today! I looked into that program for Tony. I think he would really like it. The meal plan looked great too with no deprivation. I can’t wait to see your results! Weights are awesome! Show those ken who’s boss in that room!

  7. YOURE GIVING UP NUT BUTTERS?!?!?!

    I’m super impressed. Like woah.

By the way, you DO look like a badass. I’m impressed. πŸ˜‰

  8. Emily says:

I considered giving up nut butters for Lent, but instead I’m going for sweets – and after much deliberation, I’ve decided that “sweets” includes “breakfast desserts” like your pancake creations. Damn… Well, I believe we can do this. :O
Oh, and I commend you on your no-loophole policy. (I know this is a bit out of line, but I’ve seen so many food bloggers give up “nut butters” while continuing to eat sunbutter and tahini and all that jazz… and I don’t get it. To me that seems like following the letter of the law instead of its spirit, if that makes sense. Lent is about *giving something up*, not substitution, right?)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

EXACTLY! I couldn’t agree more! I mean, it’s not sacrifice if you make it easy by throwing in as many substitutions as you can find. If it’s going to matter, I have to go all the way.

Good luck with giving up the sweets. I wouldn’t have a problem without cakes and cookies and such since I don’t have a HUGE sweet tooth, but I’m not sure I could go 40 days without my beloved pancakes! πŸ˜‰

  9. Amber Schaefer says:

Giving up nut butter?! I don’t know if I could do that! I’m doing the Daniel Fast, but at least that includes unsweetened nut butters!

  10. OMG you must have will power of steel, I could barely give up nut butters for a week! Wish my ladies only gym had the equipment so I could do Live Fit, I want to feel bad ass too!

  11. The weather seems to have gone crazy in the past few months! Last February, it was freezing and we had tons of snow. This year, it’s warm and we have beautiful blue skies like you! It’s mad! But I’m loving it!
OMG that dark chocolate bar looks AMAZING! I wonder if we get them over here. I need to find out now!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Same thing here! Well, we didn’t get a LOT of snow, but we did have a pretty bad storm last February and it was icy and nasty for days. Where are you from?

  12. I can’t believe you’re giving up nut butters! You’re crazy! πŸ˜‰

  13. whoaaa giving you mucho credit for giving up nut butter, lady!

  14. janetha says:

I give you MAJOR PROPS for giving up nut butter. I also began Jaime Eason’s Livefit a few weeks ago and was weirded out (to say the least) about no cardio. But there’s a heavy lifter in all of us. You’re blogs are so fun to read πŸ˜€

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you Courtney…I try to be lighthearted and fun on the blog so it makes for a good read! Plus, I like making people laugh!

How are you liking LiveFit so far?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I am counting down the days! Can you believe I actually had a dream about peanut butter last night? I was eating it straight from the jar! Lol

    Hey there,

I just have to tell you, you’re blog is AMAZING! I am an avid blog addict and have, like a million, fitness/food blogs on my Google Reader. I happened to stumble across yours yesterday. Since yesterday, I have read all the way from the current date to this post (I may or may not be reading while I’m at work, shhh.) Anyway, your blog is so creative, with beautiful photography and inspiring recipes. I LOVE the way your sense of humor and personality shines in your posts!

I have been wanting to start a blog forever now, and I have definitely been inspired!

BTW, I also just started the LIVEfit (also very troubled about “no cardio”) and I can totally relate to the uncomfortableness that comes with working out with the “meatheads” at the gym. Another tactic: While I’m “resting” between sets, I sneak and watch other people on the machine/weights I’m supposed to do next so I can see how to do them!

Anyway, I’ve written a book! Take care, and I can’t wait to go to the next post!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hey Amber! It’s so nice to “meet” you! Thank you SO much for stopping by and taking the time to comment! I LOVE hearing from new readers…and it’s always awesome to get some feedback! You totally just made my night!

I started reading blogs around September of 2010 and ended up starting my blog that November after a few of my friends gave me the push I needed. I was a little nervous at first, but you just gotta close your eyes and dive right in! I’m so glad I decided to finally take the plunge. This community is incredible…so close knit, supportive, and all with a healthy dose of crazy! Come…join us on the dark side…we have cookies! πŸ˜‰

I need to get back into LIVEfit…I finished up with Phase 1 at the first of the month and have totally been lacking in the motivation to pick up a steady workout plan again. I’ll probably end up starting it over…for the THIRD time! Lol

And I totally check out other people/the stickers and labels on the equipment between sets…shhh, our little secret!
