Monday Marvelousness & The Best Burger I Ever Ate!

Happy Monday, my friends!

I hope you are all getting off to a good start this morning!

There was quite a bit of marvelousness happening around here this weekend that
I CAN’T WAIT to tell you about!

And what better way to share the deets than to join up with Katie and all her lovely link- uppers for another fun-filled…

Marvelous In My Monday!

On Saturday, as the man-friend and I headed to Nashville for a day of fun, I suggested we hit up K&S Market, our local (HUGE) international food store. I LOVE stopping in whenever I’m in the area and checking out all the unique foods, but for this particular visit, I had one mission…

K&S Kabocha

Secure the discount KABOCHA!!

I seriously had to manage some restraint so that I didn’t walk out of there with ten of those babies…when Whole Paycheck Foods wants nearly $6 a pound, really, can you blame me?

We spent about an hour wandering up and down all the aisles, laughing and pointing at some of the more “interesting” items, which of course, I took a bazillion pictures of! πŸ˜‰

K&S Collage

A MAMMOTH jar of kimchi, fish-flavored crackers, “instant” jellyfish, taro tapioca pearls, and chicken-flavored drumstick snacks? Haha, you gotta love it!

I was pretty proud of myself for not going totally crazy…

K&S Fun Finds

Some dips & spreads (because I’m a junkie), a perfect little big eggplant, some roasted chestnuts (yum), my kabocha babies, taro-flavored jello (!?!), and then as I was heading to the register, I spotted some fresh chestnuts that I can’t wait to roast on my own for the first time!

Later that night, we headed out to see Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Movie Ticket

It was…different?

I didn’t really have any expectations since I hadn’t seen any of the movie trailers, but I thought it was a little odd that it was set in the “olden days” but the weapons and language was very modern. I couldn’t help but giggle when Gretel told someone to “stay cool”…what? Lol

I may not have been enamored with the screenplay…or some of the acting…but I WILL say the special effects were great…and we didn’t even see the 3D version!

After the movie, we had a little bit of time to kill before meeting up with some friends for dinner, so the man-friend suggested that we pop in TJ Maxx…

IMG_1078

Five minutes later? Obviously, he had to twist my arm! πŸ˜‰

What I thought was hilarious was that he picked up just as much stuff as I did!

Man-Friend FindsIncluding a huge gift box of tea and these little wafer cookies that tasted like they were made out of Biscoff spread…not even joking!

As for my loot…

DSC_0032

Maple Hollow SF jam, mustard (are you really surprised?), 479° Chipotle Caramel Popcorn, Chick Pz, and a new-to-me flavor of Gnu Bars

And…

Smart Fries!

I’ve heard a lot about these, so when I saw them on the discount shelf for only $1.50 each, I just HAD to! For the record, the honey BBQ ones are just ok, but the honey mustard & onion are DELISH and totally reminds me of these pretzels!

But now, thanks to Jenn, I have a new addiction…

DSC_0038

Seriously, why did it take me so long to try these!?

For dinner that night, we met some friends at a place called The Pharmacy. They serve gourmet burgers, local beers, and specialty sodas and shakes.

IMG_1090

Β It took an hour for us to be seated, but I have to say it was WELL worth the wait!

Burgers

I ordered the Falafel Burger with sweet potato fries and the man-friend went with The Pharmacy Burger + guacamole with regular fries.

Like Debbie, I can be a bit of a food snob (particularly with fried foods). I seriously hate it when you go to a place like this and you can FEEL the grease on your skin…not to mention the tummy-troubles it often causes me. That being said, this was NOT that kind of place AT ALL!

The sweet potato fries were the BEST I’ve ever had…crunchy, sweet, and so flavorful, but the burger?

IMG_1095

Oh my gosh, the BURGER!!!

Soft on the inside, slightly crisp on the outside, and FULL of spice! It came topped with goat cheese and a yogurt raita that was the PERFECT compliment to the slight heat of the patty…I’ve already started trying to recreate it…And I WILL succeed at this…oh yes, I WILL!

What’s something marvelous from YOUR weekend?

What was on/in the best burger you ever ate?

  1. Drooooool. I rarely order burgers out since I’m such a burger snob, but I’d definitely like to try those. They sound pretty awesome!

  2. Lucie says:

Gosh Girl, you were truly successful with shopping!! πŸ™‚ i am so jealous, we have about 1/100 of the choice that you guys have there here but I just love to look at all that amazing stuff!:-)
Please. That burger. Did you actuall manage to take a full bite?? πŸ™‚ it looks to die for and I am already so excited for your version of it!!

  3. katie says:

Gosh Damn that burger looks SOOOOOOOOOO good right now! I have been loving red meat since pregnant but trying to only add a little in, not too much!

Got to love TJ Maxx, always such cool foodie yums there and for a good price! Those fry things look yummy, I will have to see if my TJ Max has them!

    Lots of marvelous going on!

    Happy Monday ! <3

  4. Meg says:

WOWWWWW the burger looks great! I still need to try falafel! Looks like you had an amazing weekend πŸ™‚ Love you!

  5. Wendy says:

That burger looks AMAZING!!! I would love to see you come up with some kabocha recipes- I’m so darn addicted to those things- I’m glowing orange from how many I eat -LOL!!! I’ve been loving your pancake recipes- keep em coming!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you Wendy! And how did you know I was thinking about pancakes when I bought these? πŸ˜‰ I’ve got so many pancake ideas right now that I want to work on, but since I just HAPPEN to have these two fresh beauties on my hands now, I think some squash pancakes are in my OUR very near future! πŸ˜‰

  6. Lot-O-Choc says:

OMG those discount kabochas!! Amazzzinggg..i can barely get my hands on one over here in the UK πŸ™ and when i can they cost an arm and a leg πŸ™ boo hoo!
    that burger looks amazing too..yumm!

  7. That burger looks amazing! A burger usually isn’t my first choice, but I adore falafel.

But fish flavoured crackers? I love sashimi, but I don’t think I would be a fan of it in cracker form – a little too weird for me!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know, right? I couldn’t get on board with that one…kept making me think of the way the smell of tuna lingers in the air hours after you open a can! Lol

  8. This makes me want to take you all over Atlanta. The market I went to this weekend was like a weird Asian food Mecca. Mom and I sort nearly 4 HOURS there. No joke

That burger sounds fabulous! I hate when my fries are greasy. Best burger ever? At a place called Bocado in Atlanta. They use short rib in their house made ground beef mixture. Mmmm…

  9. Quite a haul of goods you got there! πŸ™‚ I am not a burger eater so I have nothing to add there. πŸ™‚

  10. Sami says:

That’s funny, I had to try the GNU Blondie Bars that I found at TJ Maxx, too! I was a little dissapointed.. they were super sweet and didn’t taste much like a blondie, but I didn’t buy the mix, I just bought the actual bars. Maybe you’ll have better luck making them yourself πŸ˜‰

The best burger I ever ate had carmelized onions, quacamole, and sun dried tomatoes! It was actually a veggie burger made with bulgur and corn!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

These actually are the bars…not the mix. I thought they were way sweet too, but I’m so sensitive to sugars, I figured it was just me. I tried another one last night crumbled into a bowl of cottage cheese and that was a bit better…the tart taste of the cc definitely helped balance it out.

Oh wow! That burger sounds incredible…what a great combo of toppings…and made from bulgur and corn? Too cool!

  11. oh my gosh so jealous of the kabocha squash because i can’t find it ANYWHERE here.
but i mean, it’s not uncommon for us to mail squash right πŸ˜‰

and i am so glad i am not alone on the food snob, especially fries, so i am SO happy they were good. because honestly, nothing is better than a perfect fry!

looks like you had a great time! have a marvelous monday doll!!

  12. I love a good burger, especially with sweet potato fries. yum yum yum!

    xx Kait

  13. Okay, this post made me hungry in about 10,000 different ways. So much food!

I noticed you picked up roast chickpeas. I love them! Soooo good.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Me too! I’ve made them a few times at home, but they’re never quite as crunchy and crisp as these! And this flavor is amazing! So good on top of salad!

  14. We went to see Life of Pi and that movie was GREAT! I love a good burger place and I get one with fried green tomato and pimento cheese that is so good in ATL! So good!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ohhh, I was wondering how that one was! I heard the book was really good! I’ll have to check it out! Fried green tomatoes on a burger?! YUM!!

  15. I think the best burger I ever ate was a YAK burger of all things. It was so good I was licking the juice off the plate and devouring the bun, simply because it was soaked in meat juice.

    Says the vegan.

  16. OMG FALAFEL! I recently had a Thai style Turkey Burger made with chopped red cabbage, bell peppers, cilantro, gingerroot, scallions & soy sauce, and topped with an Asian slaw and wasabi dressing. Sooooo good!

For a beef burger though, I still think 5 Guys is best.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my gosh, seriously?! I’m drooling over here! That sounds BEYOND amazing!

We just got a 5 Guys here in town…wasn’t sure if it was worth it though since I don’t usually fare too well with overly greasy food. :-/

  17. I know I always say this but you are such an entertaining writer, haha. I’ve been wanting to see the movie but now I’m not so sure. I probably won’t like it. But then again who knows. I think my parents will wanna go with me, especially my dad, since it’s in 3D and he only think it’s worht it to go to the movie theatre if the movie is in 3D.. cause otherwise you can watch it at home for free when it comes out. Yeah.

And a falafel burger, wow, that sounds amazng. I love falafel but haven’t ever seen a falafel burger before anywhere by me, I would love to try that one. And I love sweet potato fries, ohhhh man so good. I’m jealous. Sounds like an awesome time πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you Kammie! πŸ˜€ The movie was definitely interesting and I think it would probably be really good in 3D…I just can’t handle it…makes me carsick! :-/

  18. Um your burger sounds AMAZING! I haven’t been out for a burger in ages. But that’s because I always get my dad to make them when I visit home because he makes the best burgers! They never have any cool toppings though. πŸ˜› But we have a gourmet burger place here with tons of topping combinations that I’m dying to check out!

  19. Drool those burgers look so good and sweet potato fries are soo much better than normal potato fries in my opinion πŸ™‚
    xo Emily

  20. I had a amazing date this weekend… or idk if it was a date. Who cares lol it was awesome. Best burger EVER is from Vermont Pub and Brewery in Burlington, VT. So fresh and all the food is local πŸ™‚

  21. Jessie says:

I’ve never seen a burger quite like that magnificent looking one!! I must be going to the wrong places… or I just don’t experiment w/ burgers often

  22. Now you got me craving a burger! I haven’t had a good one since. . . . hmm.. oh The Counter! Here in the Bay Area. Must have a burger from the Counter. Droooool. Seriously.

Please tell me what you are planning on doing with those squashes because I have 2 siting on my counter and I am at a loss.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

The Counter…definitely writing that one down for the day when I FINALLY make it back to see the West coast again!

I usually just slice up the kabocha, roast it, and eat it straight up…or with some ketchup! The best thing about it is that the peel is thin enough (and tasty enough) to eat so you can skip the pain in the butt peeling part! πŸ˜‰

  23. I love roasted chestnuts! If you need any tips, let me know, I make a TON every year. My favorite nut! πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah! I was just gonna Google it, but I’d love some tips from a pro! πŸ˜‰

      • Cut a “t” with a sharp knife into the top of each chestnut. Arrange on a baking sheet with the cut side up. Sprinkle or spray with olive oil. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes – the cut “ts” should be peeling back and the nuts should be tender. I always remove and peel one and taste-test to be sure it’s tender enough. Super yummy!

  24. haha yayyyyy I’m so glad you didn’t text me back saying “OMG JENN THIS ARE EFFING GROSS!” — I need to get more of these stat! P wont touch them either which is a bonus for me. That kid eats everything!

  25. Carrie says:

Roasted chestnuts are my absolute favourite! Taro-flavoured things are really yummy, too – very reminiscent of vanilla, but a little lighter and nuttier and less prone to that sickly sweetness that a lot of vanilla-flavoured Western treats are. I always look for taro flavoured cookies and candies and frozen treats in Asian markets. Fresh taro smoothies and milk teas are amazing, too!

And the best burger I ever had was some sloppy mess stuffed with sauteed mushrooms and onions and some kind of creamy mayo sauce and ketchup from a glass bottle (I swear it tastes better in the glass bottle!) at some nondescript greasy spoon in a small town we stopped at on a road trip through southern BC. Or the almond burger at Re-bar, a famous vegetarian restaurant in my hometown on Vancouver Island.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

My first experience with taro was in frozen yogurt last summer and I INSTANTLY fell in love! I love the buttery/sweet taste of it! Can’t wait to try these little cups! And oh my gosh, that burger sounds amazing (totally with ya on the glass jar thing too!)

  26. Clara says:

Falafel burger and sweet potato fries sounds like the most amazing dinner ever!!!!!
