Making My Way BACK to Marvelous

Guys, guys, guyyyyyyyyys!

Thank you all so much for the comments, tweets, emails, and texts sending along as many feel good vibes as possible…I think it’s safe to say that they’re working!

While I wouldn’t necessarily call this weekend “marvelous”, I will say that in the past 36 hours, things have started to perk up a bit. So, since I would hate to miss the chance to join my favorite diva in some Marvelous Monday action today, consider this …

My way BACK to marvelous!

As most of you know, Friday was D. Day KNEE day…

HospitalThe surgeon was a bit late getting starving…I mean STARTED!…so things didn’t kick off until closer to 2pm instead of 1pm like planned. Yeah, did I mention that I wasn’t allowed to have anything to eat after midnight the night before?!

So anywho, the doc came in, said a few words, gave me his famous “autograph” and told me he’d meet me in the surgery suite.

The last thing I remember was rolling into the surgery suite.

Next thing I know I have a nurse THISCLOSE to my face in the recovery ward.Β They kept me for a an hour and gave me ice chips and medicine. I wasn’t in much pain, just really groggy…and believe it or not, food was the farthest thing from my mind.

When they discharged me, my mom helped me into my lucky cat hair-covered yoga pants and then we were on our way. After stopping by the pharmacy to pick up more pain meds, we got back to the house around 6pm.

THEN, I was finally hungry…

Tasted like HEAVEN…and I don’t think I’m saying that just because it was the first thing I’d eaten in over 36 hours! πŸ˜‰

The rest of the night went well. I adjusted to my crutches without too many problems (except for that one incident with the bathroom rug!), and after my mom left for the night, I even felt well enough to hobble into the kitchen and make myself something for dinner…

IMG_2352

Mmm, BROWN FOOD!
French toast, apple slices, and healthy chocolate “pudding”

Unfortunately, halfway through the plate, my appetite CRASHED and this was my last real meal. I ended up just “picking” at things for the rest of the weekend. Luckily, I’m NEVER without good snackage…though I really need to kill thank Heather for sending me these pita chips…

Snacks

Apparently, my “comfort food” translates into “crunchy stuff” πŸ˜‰

Along with my sudden LOSS of appetite though was the sudden GAIN of pain. I’m guessing whatever remnants of anesthesia that was in my system finally wore off because it got to the point where I didn’t want to drink anything just because I didn’t want to have to get up to go to the restroom! The fact that I didn’t get ANY sleep that night only made it worse…yeah, for some unGODLY reason, I didn’t go to sleep until 10!

A to the frickin’ Mmmm! #fml

But I DID get a lot of work done on my Recipage?? *weak laugh*

Over SIXTY recipes converted! 😯

Fortunately, by the time it was getting really bad, the man-friend arrived. He was definitely a good sport with everything…putting up with my whining, helping me to the bathroom, not taking offense when I passed out in the middle of him talking…hmm, guess I just needed him to bore me to sleep? j/k!

He also brought me these:

Hello there my gorgeous frozen beauties…I have great plans for you!

At 5am yesterday, I awoke from a dead sleep, writhing in pain…but not from my knee…from the thing everyone LOVES MOSTΒ about taking pain medicine…

DSC_0053

I LOOKED like I was 6 months pregnant and I felt like I was going to EXPLODE!
If I hadn’t had these on hand, I’m pretty sure a slimy black mutant would have ripped through my stomach!

When I woke up later, I felt a bit better. It was easier to get off the couch (which I have damn near become a permanent fixture of) and have only had a couple of mild reenactments from the movie Alien… πŸ˜‰

But just to be on the safe side, before the man-friend left, we made sure to completely stock my command station the coffee table…

DSC_0047

Pretty sure we got all the bases covered…what do you think? πŸ˜‰

Then, once I was along, I started up a drinking habit…

Drinkage

Probiotics, enzymes, and greens!…What did you THINK I meant? πŸ˜‰

I’m so grateful to have some Incredible Greens on hand…especially since the thought of fresh veggies (with the exception of a whole carrot plunged into nut butter) has kinda made my stomach turn lately.

Plus, after my last “crunchy food” craving, I KNEW I needed vitamins…

DSC_0015I TOLD you I had plans! πŸ˜€

And just to leave you guys with a little laugh…

Auto correct strikes again!

What is your favorite snacky “comfort (not sick) food”?

Do you tend to lean toward certain textures?

You are my favorite PANCAKE QUEEN! So happy you joined in, even though the knee surgery was not so marvelous, you sure did have some marvelous stuff going on!

Love the artic zero sundae style, I really need to do that! Never had the strawberry flavor of artic zero πŸ˜‰

Hope you are feeling good and resting up love! <3

    Lots of love to you!

p.s. that text was hilarious! Saw that on FB!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you my favorite HEALTHY DIVA!! πŸ˜€

You’ve GOT to try the strawberry AZ…or more importantly, you have to try the it with the PB toast crunch cereal! I swear to you it’s JUST like PB&J!! And sometimes, it’s just all about the PB&J little things in life! πŸ˜‰

  2. Ahh surgery is nooo fun! Thankfully you had great people to take care of you πŸ™‚ Hope you feel better ASAP! <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you Brittany! I am so grateful to have the help of my family and the support from ALL of my blog friends! Love ya! πŸ™‚

  3. Lucie says:

Oh Hunn!! So sorry you had ro go through such a drag of pain!! I so hope for you that now that knee issue is solved! I laughed out loud when you said you looked like pregnant and close to explode. It’s what I always say in these situations: ‘ twins, passed 9 months accidentaly and going to fly up in the sky only to explode and fall down!!’ Haha. Your Mom and man Friend are the sweetest, really!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, you silly girl! I love you so much! I really really hope that my knee troubles will be no more after all this too! I’d hate to think this was all for nothing! πŸ˜•

Hope you’re doing well and having a great week my friend! xoxo

  4. You should totally submit that autocorrect to pinterest… Viral in no time πŸ™‚

Glad that you at least sound like your old perky self, even if the drugs did knock you off your feet for awhile. They prescribed me some heavy duty pain killers after I got my wisdom teeth taken out, but I hate feeling loopy so… I made do with Tylenol πŸ˜€

And I would say the no eating part is one of the worst things about procedures like that. I know with my endoscopy no eating went for an entire day coupled with Mirolax and other unnatural stuff.. Ick.

Anyways, I can’t to see what you’ve cooked up in your downtime, and it looks like you already have an awesome recipe to share!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow! I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago, so I know how that feels! I didn’t have to stay on the pain meds for long, but I can’t imagine making do with only Tylenol! Kudos to you, missy!

I hope to be up and cooking eventually. I really miss being in the kitchen….unfortunately, I can’t really be up for more than 10 minutes at a time right now or else I get super dizzy…and since I’m not exactly sure how I would get up from the floor in my condition, I don’t really want to take any chances! πŸ˜‰

If you’re curious about the French toast, I used my standard recipe from here: http://www.kissmybroccoliblog.com/2012/05/21/fresh-finds-and-french-toas/ πŸ˜€

  5. Aparna B. says:

I am so glad the surgery went well and you are OK! I would have come and talked your ear off and made your yummy Indian food and chai for whenever you had your appetite back. But it looks like you had a good support system πŸ™‚ I hope you have a speedy recovery! <3 *hugs*

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Support system? Where?! If it means I get home-cooked Indian food AND chai?! I’m alllllllll alone…no one loves me….waaaaah! πŸ˜‰

  6. Lee says:

Sorry you are in pain (and gassy). Hope you are feeling better today, and hope your hoes are too!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, thanks girlie! The hoes got a little outta hand…had to put them in their place, if ya know what I mean, but I think the power trip helped me feel a bit better! πŸ˜‰

  7. oh no…sorry your last few days haven’t been too marvelous. Here’s to hoping today is much better and you are on the road to recovery!

  8. You are so positive about life Heather I love it! I’ve never actually had surgery but could only imagine it being NO fun. Glad you are doing well and love your hilarious text typo πŸ™‚

  9. I think its so funny that they have to label the area to have surgery. I hope you start feeling better, I love carbs when I’m not feeling great. I normally go for crunchy cereal or oatmeal.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know, right? And if ONE small mark wasn’t enough, I get TWO HUGE purple arrows…that have YET to come all the way off after FOUR days! Lol

Thanks for the well wishes lovie! πŸ™‚

  10. Despite is not being quite that marvelous the surgery went well and I’ll keep sending good vibes for a fast recovery. Here’s to hoping you’ll be able to jump around soon again!
It’s amazing how positive and happy you made it through the whole process. I’m not sure I’d have kept up your attitude. Not to mention making smart nutritional decisions – hello, ice cream vitamins ;).
So sweet how the man-friend took care of you, too. Quite marvelous, I’d say.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks MP!! I’ve been trying my best to keep positive…I’ve gotten down on myself a few times, but I know that it’s all part of the process and it’s only a temporary thing! And as much as it hurts to even THINK about right now, I KNOW I’ll be jumping around soon enough! πŸ™‚

You are the sweetest, love! I hope everything has been going well for you! xoxo

  11. Poor you!!! It looks like you were in excellent hands with those 2 hoes. Hahaha! Glad you’re on the mend. Take your time and eat LOTS of ice cream. πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, you think if I send Zach a reeeeeeeeally sappy email, he’ll send me some bourbon ice cream? I mean, it’s practically a MEDICAL necessity! πŸ˜‰

  12. I hope you’re feeling better! I sometimes have whole days where I don’t feel like making a meal and all I do is pick at stuff. Being bloated definitely doesn’t help a less-than-adequate appetite. Just keep drinking wine and you’ll be back to normal in no time!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Keep drinking wine, huh? Well, I heard that WATER is best for bloating, but if wine is what YOU recommend… πŸ˜‰

  13. You are always MARVELOUS to me Heather! I’m glad you are on the mend. I hate that after surgery groggy feeling. UGH! I’m glad you are on the mend now that. Comfort food always comes in the form of creamy/crunch together. Oatmeal with apples and some sort of crunchy cereal or ice cream (dairy free of course) with fruit and crunchy cereal…I think you see the theme here. Try to get some rest and I hope you heal fast!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you SO much Sarena! xoxo

The crunch is definitely something I can’t deny…I’ve just started feeling like eating veggies again and I’ve about polished off my big bag of carrots! Hey, at least I’m balancing out all the cereal and pretzels, right? Lol

  14. good to know that you are feeling better. and its always nice to have such a nice, sweet ‘man-friend”. I have never heard of that artic zone frozen treat- will look into it. Take care πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you for the well wishes, Dixya! Arctic Zero is one of my favorite “healthy” treats! It’s more the consistency of a frozen protein shake than actual “ice cream” but for 150 cals for an ENTIRE pint, you can throw just about anything on it, and not even notice much of a difference! My favorite flavors are the maple vanilla, strawberry, cookies & cream, and the coffee. And I’ve found them at Whole Foods, Publix, and even just recently at Kroger. πŸ™‚

  15. I love that he’s saved as The Manfriend in your phone! No seriously though I’m glad the surgery went well, I’m sorry you are going through so much pain though. You’re a nurse, can’t you conjure up the extra strong painkillers? Bahaha. Not really ;).

The ice cream treat looks amaze-amaze!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well, actually I’m a CAT scan tech, not a nurse, but even with my connections…no “Jungle Juice” for Heather! πŸ˜‰ Lol

  16. Glad surgery went well hope you heal really quick. When I was younger I had to get a lot of dental work done and my mum would always make me Mac n cheese so I associate that with comfort food πŸ™‚

  17. Haha that message to the man friend is hilarious. Oops.

I’m all about pretzels, crackers and crunchy cereal when I want snacky comfort food. It needs to be carb-y and crunchy, apparently!

  18. HELENE says:

My dearest foodie guru: My best wishes for a speedy and relatively pain-free recovery.
Though, I think you may need to lower those pain meds a bit – uh, hoes? HMMMMM. But anyway when I’m ill, I love creamy textured cold things, like pudding or ice cream. But when I have the flu, I like soup – especially noodle soups or my mother’s mushroom, beef, bean and barley stoup. I also crave ice cold carbonated beverages. Strange, eh?
Just take care of yourself, my girl .

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hey, the body wants what the body wants, right? Whatever makes you feel better! Thank you SO much for the well wishes Helene!!

      And now…now I want pudding! πŸ˜‰

  19. I love how you’re able to stay so upbeat even when you’re in pain. You bring such a smile to my face girl! πŸ™‚ I’m glad you had your man friend to take such good care of you and bring you ice cream! Also that typo is hilarious. I definitely just laughed out loud.

My favourite snacky comfort food is cereal and really good, salty tortilla chips!

  20. Aren’t manfriends the best?! He was too sweet to bring you some goodies.. (I’m eyeing the Arctic Zero–yummy!)

My fave comfort food is frozen yogurt. If I have a bad day, I am headed to Yogurtland..

p.s.. Was that an xBox 360 controller? πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ahhh, I just wish we had some GOOD yogurt places around here, or that would be my game plan as well! Unfortunately all the “quality” ones are in Nashville which is about an hour away from here…eh, probably better for my wallet that way! πŸ˜‰

Yes ma’am! Though I have absolutely NO coordination for any of the games…I use it to watch Netflix! πŸ˜€

  21. Honestly – you did this AND had knee surgery – you are amazing!!!!!!! So I need to know if those gas pills work so I can eat more veggies & things that make me toot! πŸ˜‰

Send the test to Ellen – too funny!!!!

Chobani was handing out yogurt & those goodies like crazy at ExpoWest. I tired their bite – coffee with chocolate bits in it – OMG! πŸ™‚

    Such a great boyfriend!

    HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you SO much, Jody!

The gas pills DO work, but they take a little while…about half an hour or so. I’ve found that if I know I’m going to be eating foods that don’t necessarily “agree” with me, Beano actually works pretty well!

I’ve definitely been keeping an eye out for those Chobani Bites…I want to try the orange fig one sooooo bad!

  22. Hope you have a quick recovery!!

Loving your Arctic Zero concoction. I might need to go find myself some!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you so much Alysia! The Arctic Zero is one of my favorite “treats”…course it just gives me an excuse to eat cereal and “healthy” chocolate sauce too! πŸ˜‰

  23. I hope you’re recovering well, my dear!!! Its always weird when you don’t have an appetite, isn’t it?! I love eating so that’s always weird for me πŸ˜‰ Hope you recover SUPER fast!

  24. Boo for surgery and the pain afterwards but major yays for your tasty crunchy eats and your super supportive manfriend! I hope you have a speedy recovery and get off the crutches sooner rather than later… Ryan was so, so relieved to give those bad boys up after his ankle surgery!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks Allison! Yeah, NOW I know why people complain so much about being on crutches! This is my first time and I swear, they’re going to be the death of me! I’ve even wrapped them with towels and they STILL hurt! Ugh, if only I didn’t have to get up to pee! Lol

  25. Clara says:

I hope you feel better soon!!!!! πŸ™‚

  26. Oh no, I alternately laughed out loud and felt horrifically sorry for you about your alien pains. After my Hubby’s surgery, he went through something similar, and I swear he thought he as going to die. Glad the Manfriend is taking good care of you, and if all else fails, you’ve got those two hoes….you could do much worse.

By the way, 60 recipes converted, that’s tremendous. Huge pat on the back for you.

Alright I think it’s time for you to get out of the house today before the stir crazies set in and believe me, they will set in. Even if it’s just someone driving you around in their car. No need to change out of your cat covered yoga pants, but I recommend a day drive. Doctors orders. Or maybe just the hoes.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Gah, so glad to hear I’m not the only one! I swear…it was awful! Hurt more than the worst pain I’ve felt from my knee! And the drive may have to wait until Thursday…honestly, it was only by some act of God that my mom and I were able to get me into the car Monday morning for my doctor’s appointment! When you’ve had your leg at no less than a 120 degree angle (oh, how’s THAT for some high school geometry?) for several days, fitting into the front seat of a car isn’t exactly easy…and we didn’t think we’d be able to get me out of the backseat! Hmm, maybe someone could just strap me to the hood? πŸ˜‰

  27. There’s nothing quite like eating some Puffins and some ice cream to make you feel better! πŸ™‚

  28. Allie says:

Crunchy is totally my go-to comfort food too–even when I’m sick-sick, I just want saltines! Bland not-too-crunchy-crunch. Anyhoo, SO glad you made it through surgery, and that they handily labeled your leg so they could find your knee. Wouldn’t want them to miss and go in to the shin instead.

When you’re back up and at ’em, you’ve gotta come back to Nash so I can take you to the land of Gentleman’s Toes/funky gourds/curry leaves–this awesome Indian grocery store near my place. Plus, I have S3 of Downton Abbey that I can lend you if you finish through season 2 πŸ˜‰ I was going to say, “as long as I finish first,” but really, it’s going to be (tragically) over before I know it. If only I could keep myself from marathoning it, but there’s no way!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know, right! And it’s really convenient (four days later) to look down, see those marks, and be reminded of JUST what knee I had surgery on…because truth be told, I’ve forgotten a few times! πŸ˜‰

I just signed up for the free trial of Hulu Plus so I can watch season 2…you better believe I’m canceling before they start charging next week! You can expect me to be on your doorstep within days after I finish! I seriously can’t believe how hooked I’ve gotten…like sometimes, I want to reach through the screen and choke the crap out of them! Lol

  29. Girl! I wish I could come visit you. I’d bring you some special Nutty Butter for SURE. At least you have an Arctic Zero delivery man at the ready.

I tend to gravitate towards MIXED textures…creamy with crunchy. I rarely want just one. It’s sort of how I feel like salty alone is a letdown, but pair it with something just slightly sweet, and we’re in business. [I wanted to just say that ‘bid-eh-ness’ by the way.]

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yes, spoken from a true texture whore…don’t worry doll, it’s takes one to know one! I’m all OVER that bid-eh-ness! πŸ˜‰

  31. Bella says:

Look at you girl. I must say that even as you were awaiting surgery, you looked fabulous, hehe. But totally sucks when you have to starve yourself like that. No fun at all.

I didn’t know pain meds make you feel bloated, crazy!!

Sometimes you just want to snack, I know…. but you kept it pretty good. Oh and that green stuff you were drinking? What in the heck does it taste like? For real, is it good?

So glad things went well. Why did you have the knee surgery anyway? Is everything ok now, well besides the whole healing thing anyway, lol.

    Hugs, Bella πŸ™‚
    <a href="http://bellabeforeandafter.blogspot.com

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, you are the absolute sweetest! Thank you so much, Bella!

Yeah, pain medicine has a tendency to slow down “peristalsis” in the system (the contraction and relaxation of your intestines which helps things, you know…keep moving along!) πŸ˜‰ The green drink is called kombucha. It’s a fizzy drink make from fermented tea and it’s full of digestive enzymes and probiotics (which are also good for the gut)! It’s a bit of an acquired taste…I’ll admit, my first few times trying it, I wasn’t a fan, but now I love it!

I had to have surgery due to a torn meniscus. I also had some arthritis in the joint that the doctor had to “clean up” which means he basically shaved the ends of my bone to get the “raggedy” areas off. I start physical therapy on Tuesday so hopefully after a bit of direction and help with mobility, all will be back to normal again soon! πŸ˜€

  32. Poor girl!!! If you are still having tummy troubles e-mail me… I can help you get rid of those asap! πŸ™‚ I have lots of tips up my sleeve!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks Brittany! So far, so good (finally) but I’ll definitely keep you (and your sleeves) in mind should I have any trouble in the future! πŸ™‚

Hope you’re having a great weekend love!

  33. Calee says:

ugh. pain meds are the worst on your tummy. :/ multigreen kombucha was a great idear. glad your surgery went well. hope you have a speedy recovery.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks girlie! Yeah…I always forget what havoc they can wreak on your system…glad everything “flowing” smoothly again! πŸ˜‰
