Summertime Blues

It’s no secret I’m not yet ready to say goodbye to summer.

Usually, by the middle of September, I’m already on my fifth can of pumpkin and starting  on my infamous “gourd glow”, but this year has been different. Since I was ALL about the veggies in the beginning of the summer, what with all my salacious salads, now, in the last few weeks I have left, I’ve been on a mission to cram as many summer berries into my face as humanly possible.

Of course there have been a few favorites…

Peach Raspberry & Basil Salsa

Like salsa and chips…

Rainbow Salsa & Salmon Salad

Salsa and salmon…

Blueberry Basil Grilled Cheese Bite

Sandwiches and SANDWICHES

Coconut Raspberry Pancakes via Kiss My Broccoli

And of course, we can’t forget the pancakes! 😀

But there has also been some UNSEEN goodness…

Berry Bagel with Coconut Butter

Like berries on a bagel with {coconut} butter…try saying that ten times fast!

Berries Ricotta Cinnamon & Coconut Chips

Berries with ricotta, cinnamon, and toasted coconut chips which I SWEAR are going to be the death of me…

Cottage Cheese Berry Bowl

Berries with cottage cheese, cinnamon, and Swiss crack chocolate spread

Berry Yogurt Bowl with Cinnamon Peanut Butter

And berries with coconut yogurt and drizzly peanut butter…

Oh I’m sorry, do some of those berries look a bit peculiar to you? Well, I just happened to spot these kiwi berries at Sam’s Club the other day and got a little curious. As you guys know, I’m allergic to kiwi. It has something to do with the hair/skin but even after meticulously washing and peeling them, I’ve still had a reaction in the past. I tried golden kiwi (fuzz-free) once since I heard they usually don’t affect people with an allergy, but the flavor just wasn’t the same. Well guess what! These tiny little hairless wonders taste almost EXACTLY like their big brother (sister?) AND?? No trips to the hospital for me! Woo hoo!

I think we should celebrate! With a recipe! That doesn’t even have kiwi berries in it! Oh, and we should be sure to use PLENTY of exclamation marks!!!…!!!!!!!!!!!

Summertime Bleu Salad via Kiss My Broccoli

Say hello to last night’s dinner!

After getting a MAJOR craving for a fruit bowl the size of my head for dinner last night, I somehow decided that piling it all on top of a bed of kale with some almonds and a MASSIVE amount of cheese would make it more acceptable.

Summertime Bleu Salad with Almonds Kiss My Broccoli

What it made, was me a FREAKIN’ GENIUS!

And if you’re NOT a fan of cheese (which breaks mine and Meghan’s hearts ever so slightly) then sub in some goat cheese or even avocado!

You can’t call it “bleu”, but you CAN call it delicious!

WIAW Teal

Now head on over to Peas & Crayons and, if you MUST, drool over the massive amount of pumpkin I’m sure is probably linked up today! 😉

What was for dinner last night?

Have you ever tried a kiwi berry?

  1. Yum I love my blue or bleu cheese as you call it 😉

I’m counting down to summer! It is spring here but raining and teasing us with sun!

I never know which is the correct way to spell it! Some people say “blue” and some say it’s “bleu”…I think the latter makes me look more educated. Come to think of it, I may start spelling things in British English from now on since I think it looks prettier! “Favourite?” Yes, I think so! 😉

  2. Oh and yes I have tried a kiwi berry! I enjoyed it 😉

  3. Since fall is in full swing here I had butternut squash soup for dins last night. Also I need to stop reading your blog before I’ve eaten breakfast. Now I’m ravenous and can’t fathom the whole 5 mins it is going to take me to make my oatmeal…and now I want pancakes!

  4. Please send someone to bring me all your food!

  5. Oh goodness, that salad looks amazing!! I so wish I could eat raw purple onions (love em) but they give me the major belly upsets. Boo. Happy WIAW!

  6. Kiwi berries? I have never seen nor heard of them before but they look so cute. Plus, the fuzz on the kiwis was always my least favorite part anyways (whoever said that eating the skin tasted good was so so wrong). I’m glad that you found a way to get in your kiwi fix without an allergic reaction though. That’s always good 😀

  7. Everything looks fantastic! I have never heard of kiwi berries, they sound like something fun to try. Your dinner salad also looks great with the colors and flavor combinations.

  8. i’m definitely not ready to say goodbye to summer 🙁 mainly because i don’t want to say goodbye to my tan 🙁

  9. 2 things:

    1. You have one-upped the farmer’s market. Never seen/heard/imagines kiwi berries. I’m on a mission now though!

    2. Blue yourself. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

    Carry on.

  10. Salad with fruit, blue cheese and nuts is, like, daily for me. No raw onions though.

  11. I’m right there with ya on the berry lovin. Sooooo good!

  12. Kaitlin says:

Wow, this selection of meals looks AMAZING! Seriously your photography makes it look so delicious! We made this recipe on Sunday called Figgy Piggy Chicken that had figs all over the chicken. So darn tasty 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, that’s cute! Love the name! Did it have bacon too? Bacon (or prosciutto) and figs is such a great combo!

  13. I had no idea that kiwi berries existed! I’ll have to keep an eye out for them. Dinner last night was whatever I could pull out of the fridge at 9:30 pm 😉

  14. I want to dive into a bowl of that delicious summer salad. I am still hooked on the summer time fruit, and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Sweet fruit, tangy onions and a hunk of blue cheese always makes everything better.
Oh and I went on a summer bender myself on the blog today, and it involved cheese. A little pumpkin damnation too. Great minds think alike.

  15. Nice play on words, sistah. As much as I like summer, I love Fall more so I am happy it’s here 🙂

  16. Paty says:

Since I live in LA it’s always summertime. However, I am looking forward to hot chocolate, warm oats, and of course pumpkin cookies! I still am not ready to give up my ice cream!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’m of the opinion that ice cream actually tastes BETTER in the winter…as long as you’re snuggled up under a big fluffy blanket! 😉

  17. I have never had a kiwi berry but I am already upset to see my grocery stores are lacking in the fresh berries department! I miss my big containers of blueberries.

  18. Hah it seems we are very in tune as we have very similar WIAW themes this week. 😉 Summer, don’t leave us! I actually tried kiwi berries for the first time the other week and was a little weirded out by them, but that was probably just because it wasn’t kiwi season yet lol! As if we weren’t in tune enough I already, I also had a massive fruit and veggie salad for dinner last night. Can’t. Get. Enough.

  19. Julie says:

Chips and salsa sound amazing, especially sweet ones.

  20. Beautiful pics!!! That salsa looks sensational! I’m off the berries and on the greengages, plums and pears…and I’m officially out of pumpkin!!!

  21. I’ve always thought fruit in salads are a big no no and just wreck the flavour…after seeing your creations on here AND instagram- as soon as the $5 price tag drops on blueberries, I’ll be chucking them in!

Dinner last night was boring- turkey, kabocha and veg. I’m thinking tonight might be a brinner kind of night 😉

  22. Those kiwi berries are the cutest little things! I’ve never seen them around here though. My grocery store never carries the really unique fruits and veggies. 😛

Dinner last night was leftover Cajun beans & rice with chicken sausage.

  23. Haha love the play on words. Salad looks delish

  24. Mmmmm! Salmon and salsa, I could go for that RIGHT NOW. However, I am sooooo over summer and ready for the HOLIDAYS!

  25. I am in complete agreement – not ready to let the warm weather and all the berries go! Keep the summery recipes coming 🙂

  26. Sarah Pie says:

NOOO! No pumpkin yet! I love that you are hanging onto summer and sharing all of these beautiful berries! The berries on the bagel in particular look amazing. I’ve never seen a kiwi berry before but now you kind of have me wanting to go hunt them down because they are adorable looking 🙂

  27. I’m feeling pretty bummed about summer ending too, but how excited are you for truck loads of squash?! I mean: butternut, spaghetti, pumpkin…that’s something to get jazzed about!

    Adorable little kiwi btw 🙂

  29. I’m hanging on the summer for dear life!!! I want some figs now!!! I can’t find them around me anymore… boo!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, bummer! I’m usually pretty lucky and can nab them from Publix until sometime in December! I’ll have to bring you some! Lol
