But seriously, I’ve realized that, since I discovered the blogging community and basically opened Pandora’s box with my foodie creativity, I will probably NEVER eat a “normal” meal again. This week’s addition to my #strangebutgood repertoire is a prime example…I was halfway through eating my FIRST one before I even realized it was a bit…um, odd? I was just excited to use my boozy jam again!

Then it was all like, quick we need photographic evidence! THEN I held on to it all for over a week because I couldn’t figure out what to call it…thanks for saving the #strangebutgood day, Melissa! πŸ˜€

Cook Time: 2-3 minutes

Keywords: broil sandwich salad entrΓ©e high protein tuna

  • 1 5oz. can Wild Planet wild albacore tuna or 1 cup cooked chickpeas for vegetarian option
  • 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
  • 1/8 cup finely diced onion
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard

1. Turn oven to low broil.
2. Place bread slices on a sheet pan under broiler for 3-5 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, combine all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl.
4. Remove bread slices from oven, flip over and top with tuna mixture.
5. If desired, add a bit more jam to top of mixture, sprinkle with cheese and spices and return to oven until cheese has melted (2-3 minutes).
6. Serve with roasted vegetables and kale chips or side salad for a well-balanced meal.

Drunken Tuna Melt with Roasted Veggies and Kale Chips

Of course, if you want to get SUPER strange, you could always forget the bread altogether and stuff your tuna melt in a friggin’ SQUASH…

Drunken Tuna Melt in a Butternut Squash... #strangebutGENIUS! ;)

But if your on a kick like me, the kale chips are NOT optional! πŸ˜‰

Oh lord, if only my veggie-hating, chicken nugget and French fry loving five year old self could see me now!

Were you a picky eater growing up?

What was your favorite “odd” food pairing when you were little?
I honestly wasn’t really into strange combos as a kid, but I loved me some fried SPAM with ketchup and hot dogs straight out of the fridge in the summer! πŸ˜€

  1. Oh my god I love tuna and tuna melts and I love wine. How did I not know there is such a thing as wine jam?? This actually sounds really goods. Making my tummy growl with desire. Lol. Another great looking dish πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yep, that sounds about like what was going through my head when I spotted this jam at (of all places) a convenience store! The wine flavor is pretty subtle, but now I totally want to make my own…and make it STRONG! Lol

  2. ever since you first posted your tuna melt in the squash i cannot get it out of my head and i love strange but good and i love love love jam with anything savoury so I KNOW this will not leave my head either until i make it!

thanks babe! LOVE YOU FOR YOU

  3. I actually totally believe you that the grape jelly would taste amazing because I always add grapes to my tuna salad! Next time it’s all about jelly. On top of an BNS, because I still can’t get over that brilliance!

  4. This may be my favorite SBG logo redesign yet! LOL!

And this tuna… you had me at drunken. Brilliant idea. And in the butternut! Like tofu squash jammy dessert. (Yes, any remaining normalcy is gooooone at this point.)

  5. I love the jam and cheese combo, so I can see this being really good! And stuffed in a squash is pure brilliance, of course πŸ˜‰ I was absolutely the pickiest eater as a kid. If it wasn’t brown (so a french fry, a chicken finger, or cereal) I wasn’t a fan at all. Which is interesting, because I’m definitely an adventurous eater nowadays.

  6. not a combo I’d have thought of, but it sure looks delicious!

  7. I grew up on Tuna Melts at my grandma’s house…but she never made them drunken…which is probably why I was so quick to name these for ya πŸ˜‰
    Love you!!

  8. I MUST try this in a squash. I need to.

  9. calee says:

    two words: fuck yes.

  10. Yum this looks so so good!!

Favourite odd pairing growing up was definitely toast with peanut butter, Vegemite, jam and honey all on the one slice of bread. To me it was the perfect salty sweet delicious combo but others thought it was just weird.

  11. wowzwer schnauzer! i don’t even like half of the ingredients in this..but golly gee!! this looks amazeschwalls! i know, i know..but i may (or may not) be unther the alfluence of inkahol atm πŸ˜›

  12. Oh, guuuurl- we certainly have that vicious savory AND sweet tooth. I absolutely crave the two in any meal. This sounds delicious!

  13. Kat says:

sooooo I know I said that tuna is pretty much the only fish I can eat, but I don’t think I can eat it this way! you are one creative ginger my friend. my daddy made tuna melts a lot for me as a kid, but it was always just tuna, Dijon mustard and cheese. I must get my boringness from him when it comes to food πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well, if you’ve ever seen/eaten a tuna or chicken salad with grapes in it…it’s really not that far off from that! But I’ll admit, at first glance, it does seem a little weird! Promise it tastes amazing…the perfect combo of sweet and savory! Now I KNOW you can get behind that! πŸ˜‰

  14. I actually think Ketchup on top would be good, but Jam hmmm… haha. Can’t judge until you’ve tried it I guess πŸ˜€

  15. I knew I spotted blue cheese in there. Guess I’ve got an eye for the good stuff. I’d fight you for those kale chips…or maybe you can just share ok….it’d be so much easier and cleaner.
Every time I see that stuffed squash, I want to put some crushed toasted walnuts on top. I have no idea why, but I do. More strange perhaps?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

BECAUSE YOU’RE A FREAKIN’ GENIUS!! Blue cheese and walnuts is the BEST! Gah, why didn’t I think of that! Shit, I need another squash…got one (or three) I can borrow? I know you do! πŸ˜‰

  16. Jam…and tuna. Can it really be? This I MUST try out seeing as I love tuna and love jam and love #strangebood even more…and cheese? Gah, Ok, pinning, tweeting and twerking to this right now.

Odd pairing of food was from that silly movie Harriet the spy- I went through a mayonaise and tomato sandwich phase… like half a jar of mayo. I didn’t even really like it, but ate it because harriet did. Fail.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, hahaha! Love it! I used to LOVE cheese, tomato and mayo sandwiches as a kid! During the summers when my dad had a garden, it was basically all I ate!

Love the mental image I’m getting of your pinning, tweeting, and twerking a the same time…especially since for some reason I think you flap your arms up and down while your tweeting! Lmao!

  17. Caitlin says:

i’m so going to make this, but i also so am going to wait to do so until after i get my hands on some cab sav jam!
