Spill It!

Hey guys!

I hope you are all having a fantastic weekend!

I’m happy to be participating in Arman’s brand SPANKIN’ πŸ˜‰ new link up called Spill it Sundays where each week there will be a series of questions to answer to get to know all us bloggers a bit better! Obviously, since I’m a raging narcissist, I had to jump in on this! Oh and the best part? More excuses to plaster pictures of myself online!

Mom & Me

Only this time I got Broccoli Mama in on it too! Here we are putting the finishing touches on Friday’s Thanksgiving Day feast…mmm, candied sweet portaters!

Me & Tori

And I’m sorry but Broccoli Sister is just too freaking gorgeous not to show you guys too! But c’mon, when did I get to be so short? Eight years older and two inches SHORTER?…What?!

Yeah…so.. since this post is quickly turning into whatever I want it to be, I might as well go ahead and show you Friday’s spread…because it was INSANE and well, this week is going to be pretty busy…for YOU πŸ˜€ …so this may be the only chance I get to share…

Thanksgiving 2013

Turkey and dressing (which mom & I pilfered from my grandmother’s the day before…seriously, it’s THAT good!) with giblet gravy, steamed green beans, boozy cranberry pomegranate sauce (recipe coming tomorrow!), candied sweet potatoes,Β Caramelized Onion, Cranberry & Kale Saute, and the obligatoryΒ deviled Angelic Egg!

Seriously, the family agreed it was the BEST Thanksgiving meal we’ve ever had…and Mama Broccoli would NOT quit raving about the cranberry sauce! πŸ˜€

Anyhoodles…I believe Arman’s got some questions I need to answer!

1. What is your cultural background?

Ok, so I’m part Irish…you know, in case the whole ginger thing didn’t already give it away…but get this, my mom just told me that my great great grandfather on her side was full-blooded Cherokee indian! So yeah, that gives me the ok to make fun of my heritage with flippant captions such as this! πŸ˜‰

2. When was your most memorable birthday and why?

That would be my Sweet SEVENTEEN birthday! I didn’t get to have a party the year before due to some school obligations, so my mom and dad and all my friends made sure to make up for it the following year!

Sweet 17 Birthday

I can’t even remember the presents I got that year (by the way, that’s me in the top right pic with the daisy shirt on), just the ridiculous and hilarious memories…anyone up for a round of Twister and Fluffy Bunny?

I’ll give you some bonus points if you can spot the besties! πŸ˜€

3. What is the #1 thing you wish to accomplish in your lifetime?

Ok, gonna get a little serious on ya here because honestly, the thing I want more than anything (at least right now in my life) is to get back to being completely carefree about food and accepting of my body. While Friday’s Thanksgiving dinner was absolutely amazing, the thing that excited me the most was how completely normal I felt the whole time! I was present with my family and still in tune with my hunger/satiety…I didn’t even finish my plate! Definitely a proud moment for me and a milestone in my journey with intuitive eating…and I’m keeping that in mind since yesterday was NOT the best of days. πŸ˜•

4. What is the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?

Ehh, I may get serious, but I’m not gonna get THAT serious. I promise I’ve never been arrested or anything, but let’s just say that in my early twenties I allowed someone to talk me into doing something I knew I shouldn’t have and I lost my job over it…

What is it they say? Love is blind? Yeah, this love which was my marriage that I tried to keep alive by using marital aids like the ones described at this wand massagers test blog posts.

5. Who was your childhood hero?

Gonna have to go with Howard the Duck on this one…

Me as Howard the Duck

Circa Halloween 1987

Hey, I warned ya…the throwbacks are coming!

Well, that’s it for the questions, but I think I still promised to spill a little something else, didn’t I? With the hustle and bustle of the recent holiday, a pretty special day was slightly overshadowed. For that reason, it will now be recognized and celebrated for the ENTIRE week! Hmm, wonder what it could be…?

Birthday Sprinkles

Any guesses?

Happy Birthday KMB

Thursday, November 28, 2013 was the blog’s THIRD birthday!

  1. Okay, you have some good genes girl! Your mom looks like she could be your sister and you do NOT look eight years older than your sister either.

Your ex sounds like a real ass, btw.

Happy birthday to KMB!! That’s a lot of years of delicious food porn. πŸ˜‰ Congrats!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you, Sarah!! It was so funny, I posted that pic of me and my mom on Instagram Friday night and some guy asked if she was single! Haha!

  2. Firstly I have Irish on my dad’s side too no wonder we share such a great sense of humour πŸ˜‰ hehe

Secondly loving all of your throw back photos!!

Thirdly and most importantly HAPPY FRIGGIN BLOGIVERSARY!!! Had I known I would have thrown you a little party over here!! Woohoo!! 3 years is an incredible achievement and one you should be very proud of.

Speaking of things you should be proud of (how is that for a segway). I am so proud of how well you did on Thanksgiving with good and eating and feeling ‘normal’ so inspiring to hear! Don’t let yesterdays one bad day get you down you are rocking this!!!!!

  3. Amelia says:

You have some good genes girl, I love that you have a Cherokee Indian great grandfather! I am Irish, Italian, Turkish and Japanese (very erratic combo ;)).

Your sweet seventeenth bday looks like it was fabulous :)- my most memorable would be my 12th I was at a hippy school and we roamed the rainforest where I lived in the night, talked about boys, watched movies, danced and played murder in the dark. Oh and the food! Banana smoothies made with ice cream, Tim tams, lollies, homemade pizza, chocolate hazelnut cake, mars bar cheescake and carrot cake plus pancakes with lemon juice and sugar the next morning πŸ™‚ I can’t wait for my bday next year now (I think I might recreate that feast!)

Best thing I ate this weekend chicken schnitzel sandwich with havarti cheese, beetroot, olives, and a bit of lettuce and tomato.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow!! That sounds like one amazing partay!! The more I read, the bigger my eyes got! Haha! And just like Kristy (the commenter below you), I am SO impressed with your memory recollection! I really have the worst memory in the world…and most of what I “remember” is jogged out of me by family and friends. Heck, the besties and I were talking about some old high school stuff a couple of weekends ago, and I kept asking them if I was even there! Lol

I love that you are a little cultural calico! What a great combination of heritage!

And that sandwich sounds amazing…I may just have to recreate that! Havarti is definitely an underrated cheese!

  4. Hooray for blog birthdays!! Can you believe that Jesse HATES sprinkles?! Is that not the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard?!

My most memorable birthday was probably one of my really early ones. For my fifth birthday we had a jumping castle/slide and a clown who was also a face painter. I still remember what I wore, what cake I had, where I was sitting when we opened the presents that afternoon and who I was sitting by and who was there. Jesse can’t believe how many memories I have from when I was really little but they’re actually some of my strongest!

This years birthday was also perfect – we had a combined engagement/welcome to Australia Jesse/Kristy’s 21st birthday party with our closest family and friends and it was perfect – we had the best night and my gluten free meal choices were amazing (homemade salad bar heaven!)

    • Oh and I have to tell you, my strange but good loving friend – the best thing I’ve eaten this week? A nutella and goat cheese sandwich – ah freaking mazing

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, omg, OMG!! My eyes just got like THIS BIG!! I’m not even a huge fan of nutella, but goat cheese and CHOCOLATE?! I’m down with that ANY day!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Uhh, yeah, that IS ridiculous! That’s alike to someone saying they hate unicorns…or sunny days…or cute little puppies! 😯

I’m so jealous of your amazing memory, my friend! Your recollection of that birthday is definitely impressive! I swear most of my memories happen in strobe like fashion! Ha!

Homemade salad bars are the BEST! A little bit of something for everyone…I can even get my veggie-hating dad behind that one…as long as there’s iceberg lettuce anyway! πŸ˜‰

  5. So you have a gorgeous family! You definitely fit right in there πŸ˜‰ And confession: I have no idea who Howard the Duck is.
And for my most memorable birthday, I picked either 19 or 22, even though I don’t actually remember much of my 22nd… πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! It’s ok….I didn’t really expect anyone to know. Heck, I don’t even really remember! I know from looking online that he was a “superhero” sent to save the planet from aliens and he starred alongside Lea Thompson (love her), but other than that, I couldn’t tell ya! My mom said I was obsessed with him as a kid though!

  6. happy birthday KMB πŸ™‚ i wish i took part in this link up! how fun!

  7. Such a gorgeous Broccoli family! You have all the reason to be a little narcistic here :).
Never mind that I already said it on Thursday because two times is better than one: Happy Birthday to your little/big [is it still a toddler or do blogs age faster?] blog baby! Party hats will be donned and clicker fingers rattled at the office tomorrow [even if only in spirit because I’d like to keep that job ;)].
You better believe I searched for your besties in the pictures and at least for one of them I’m sure: the brunette in the dark red shirt. Too bad I don’t know her name so have to point out her hair colour which is something I feel so … weird about [anybody else?]. And how did we never play Fluffy Bunny at parties over here?! Well, at least we had Singstar which was part of my Sweet Sixteen party. Haha, we were seriously crazy about that game – how we managed to end the obsession is beyond me.
Best thing I still hope to eat this weekend is our first installment of family dinner since my move back: a roasted squash and shallot dish with spiced chickpeas. Fingers crossed it’ll turn out great.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ohhhhh, my fingers are crossed and I’m willing the good vibes BACK in time! Hope the dinner was a success, love!

And you totally got it with the bestie! I didn’t imagine anyone guess the other one since she used to be a brunette…she’s the one in the purple shirt with the white sweater…I know, COMPLETELY different now! Haha! Singstar? Was that the karaoke game? I think one of the besties had that…of course all we ever did was screech Backstreet Boys at the tops of our lungs back then so I don’t really remember much else!

Couldn’t help but giggle over the blog age comment! Haha! I’d like to think of it…her? as a toddler still…if she got much bigger/older, I’d start to feel old! Lol

Guess what! I ventured out to the store yesterday and stumbled across a JACKPOT of stickers and colored pens! Just saying…I’m armed and ready for my next letter! πŸ˜‰

  8. Those Irish Indians do have good genes, your family is gorgeous! I’m glad you enjoyed your Thanksgiving meal and didn’t feel guilty about it. happy birthday to KMB!

  9. Awwr Happy Birthday to KMB! I’m not 100% sure how I stumbled across your little place on the web, but I’m super happy that I did. Love you tonnes, lady!

My most memorable birthday… Oh geez. I think it must have been my 20th when a bunch of us went up to the mountains to do some snowboarding [and partying]. I’ve always kind of resented the fact that I was born in the coldest month of the year (January) and also on a day that usually coincided with going back to school/work after the holidays, buuuuuuut I guess it has its perks.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh I hear ya girlie…can’t tell you how many times I was resentful of all my friends with their summer birthday pool parties and such! Honestly, besides family get togethers, I only really remember having a handful of “parties” for my birthday…and don’t even get me started on birthday SLASH Christmas presents! Ha!

Love you too, gorgeous! I hope you’re having a great time with your man! <3 <3 <3

  10. Sarah Pie says:

Happy Happy Birthday KMB!! So excited to hear that you reached 3 awesome years, and also had a celebration worthy time on Thanksgiving!

Side note, who is Howard the Duck? Not that you didn’t make an adorable one in that throwback photo πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! He was a “superhero” in an old 80’s movie with Lea Thompson…I don’t even remember the movie now, but when I was little, my mom said I was obsessed with him!

  11. Julia says:

Happy third birthday!!!!!! Waaaaahooo! What a way to celebrate KMB’s 3rd birthday – with a delicious plate of Thanksgiving food! Loved reading this post – you and your high school clan remind me of my own group of friends when I was 17. πŸ™‚ Enjoy the rest of your weekend, lady!

  12. Twister is such a classic party game! It was always so funny to play in like middle school when you had guys and girls around because you thought you were being really cool. (at least that’s how we acted) Loving those throwback pictures!

  13. Happy Third Birthday KMB!!! I think I may have been one of your first readers. Seriously you’re one of the first blogs I started reading. And now I will continue to be your biggest fan thanks to your scanner! So happy about these throwbacks πŸ™‚

  14. Happy blog BIRTHDAY! I guess you have a good point – blogiversary doesn’t really make sense, does it? πŸ˜›

My most memorable birthday was my 13th, when my parents hired a limo to take my friends and I to see Harry Potter!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Chelsea! Yeah, I think it’s funny how many people celebrate it as an anniversary…can’t help but giggle a bit…you know, before my eye starts twitching! πŸ˜‰

And wow!! I’ve never actually been in a limo! I totally would’ve been geeking out at 13…ha, whatever, I’d be doing that NOW! Lol

  15. Happy Birthday Broccoli!! Wow that is so awesome, 3 years???
You Broccoli ladies are all so stunning! And you rock girl for making such great progress in your Intuitive Eating. That’s HUGE!!
Best thing I ate – does the liquid dinner out of 4 glasses of prosecco on Friday count? πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

      Awww, thanks babe! Love you!

Hmm, it only counts if there was some Swiss chocolate involved in there somewhere! πŸ˜‰

  16. Maria says:

    1. Pretty Ladies.

    2. I wish I could say that I was able to put my fork down on Thanksgiving when I was full, but nope. Onwards and upwards though, right? πŸ™‚

    3. My dad’s grandfather is a full blooded Cherokee as well! We are practically sisters!

    4. Happy Birthday KMB! <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Onwards and UPwards for sure! πŸ˜€ But seriously, with the spread you had? And that pumpkin pie? I don’t blame ya! And since we’re pretty much related, I expect an invite next year! Gosh, wouldn’t it be amazing to have a blogger Thanksgiving? I’m sure none of us would be able to eat anything for a week afterwards but it would be totally worth it! πŸ˜‰

  17. Chrystal M. says:

    Happy Birthday! Woohoo.

See….3 years…you must celebrate with a cookbook for all your fans… *taps fingers on the desk.” Do a poll, see how many would purchase. I bet the results will surprise you. πŸ™‚

Ok.Ok. I love the sprinkle picture. I am excited now.

The Irish I gathered, I’m Irish too but did not get so lucky with the ginger locks (wha? I love them) but did get blessed with the dark Indian locks (Chippawa to be exact) so there is no hiding that part of me. My family fled Ireland and landed in Canada. One of my great-great uncles met Nevada a Chippawa Indian and my great-grandmothers linage came to be. My grandfathers family is Irish as well.

    Such beautiful ladies!!!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow! You’re right, I can definitely see the indian heritage in you. I’m jealous that you know so much about your ancestry! Confession: I actually texted my mom just before I typed up this post to see what my cultural background was! Ha! So sad…here I am almost thirty years old and I have no idea where I came from!

Awww, you make me smile! I’d at least want to work on getting a good base of recipes down before I think any further on the cookbook adventure…and then there’s always the decision of a theme/title too? Just pancakes? Breakfast? Quick and Easy Dishes? Meals and Mocking my Maturity? Hmmmm…

      • Chrystal M. says:

My great-uncle did most of the leg-work to find out my linage. My grandmother and great-grandmother were some good story tellers and made sure to tell their stories. My grandpa was pretty good at it too. I have a pocketbook that was my great-great uncles from Ireland. Came right off the boat. I have a few other Irish treasures from my family that my grandmother gave to me. I’m the ‘old soul’ of the family. I tend to like old things over new. Read rather than watch.

Funny we are talking about this. I don’t know my bio father, I was adopted when my mother married. A friend of mine sent me this link this morning about a special National Geographic is doing and how to get involved. I know Ancestry.com is good too but I never had any luck because I have very limited information about my real father.

Maybe this is something you would like to do. It’s not an affiliate link, but it was really long so I didn’t want to fill your comment box with it.
        http://bit.ly/1bdYTP4

As for the recipe books… if and when you are ready – I can help you. It’s what I do. Freelance that is. I have a big fancy masters degree and I prefer to freelance. I love words. I love numbers too but working from home suits me better. Anyway I am about to finish mine and I have some other books under my belt. I’d be happy to point you in directions and lend a hand when you are ready. You already have a good base with your blog recipes and photos. You could start with a blog recipe collection because a lot of folks really don’t want to scroll to back posts. (I do, but am OCD like that.)

You could do an all pancake. Or make one all pumpkin. Or do one of each. LOL

And, when you feel conquered, I would love to see you write a little self-help about battling your eating. Seriously. Judging from these comments I am not the only one you are helping.

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Chrystal! First off, I just want to say thank you! I’ll admit right now that that last bit kinda made me tear up a bit. This has been a really “off” week for me and I’ve been struggling. I’ve had some recent happenings that have given me a bit of perspective over the last couple of days (hopefully I can blog about this soon) and helped me appreciate where I am at this point, but it has been rough. I’m sure I’ll look back one day many years from now and wonder why I gave up so much of my time to stressing about food, but sometimes it’s kinda hard to step back and see the bigger picture. I’m sure you can understand. I honestly don’t know what I would do without you and my other blends! So thank you…thank you so much for your empathy, for your compassion, and for your support!

And it really warms my heart SO much that you would offer to help me with the cookbook thing. I never really thought about a blog recipe collection because I figured why would people pay for something that they can get for free, but you make a good point about having to back track through all of those old posts. Oh and I do love the idea of an all pumpkin book…that is definitely my language! Haha!

I will definitely have to check out that link! Thank you so much for sharing it with me! And that is SO awesome that you have old world treasures from your family’s past! I don’t think there is anything in my family older than from my great-grandparents’ generation so I can’t even imagine!

  18. I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on this….. hahaha! No joke, when I was going through to your very first post, I had to literally click on the year (2010) and press ‘previous etc’ and then hit the VERY end of November to coincide with Thanksgiving…ahhh!

Can’t believe how long you’ve been on the web for- bombing everyone, one broccoli at a time πŸ™‚

So glad to have come across your blog- truly been amazing. and #4 will happen. That post I read circa 2010 is a perfect reminder.

  19. Well, I REALLY want to say Happy “Blogiversary!” ….but instead, I will just say Happy Birthday KMB!! πŸ™‚ Can’t wait for those giveaways!

  20. I will not wish you a happy blogiversay if you will not call chicken breasts “boobs.” πŸ˜‰

We must be related. I have the same heritage, plus some German.

Best food this holiday weekend… either the Pumpkin Beer Bread I made or the seared fois gras with squid ink I ate Friday night. Or the German chocolate cake from last night… it was a weekend of feasting!

  21. kolya says:

D-mn you make me smile (: I spent T-giving delivering a grocery package to my 92 yr. old man-crush. Seriously we are secretly in love if only he were at least 40 yrs. younger…alas.

I roasted a medium kabocha all for me and snagged some cooked beets from Whole Foods salad bar (great spot to stock up on pre cut veggies thus no real grunt work for me), curled up with the Bernese Mtn. Dog I was house/dog sitting for, cranked up the heat and watched tv while the wind howled. Total indulgence since I don’t have a tv in my apt. or a big dog to cuddle with plus I usually just micro everything.

Can’t wait to get in on the giveaways…I’m needing some good stuff and luck in my life during my winter hibernation/doldrums…bring it on (:

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Big dog or area rug? Haha! I actually JUST saw a Bernese today outside the gym…gorrrsh, they are so pretty! Sounds like you had a pretty nice Thanksgiving…I definitely did my fair share of lounging around in my pj’s getting caught up on Food Network shows while camping out at my parent’s on Thursday night!

  22. i love all things ginger..and broccoli..and will not hesitate to kiss either one of them πŸ™‚ happy birthday little broccoli! blowing you a big birthday shhhmack. X

  23. Courtney says:

After many thoughts of Thanksgiving food (thanks to my American friends) I was craving devilled eggs. I hard boiled 2 and whipped em’ up for lunch yesterday. Totally the best thing I’ve had this week! My favourite birthdays were always the ones my family spent in Florida because my entire family has birthdays in November and I just felt so special getting to choose what we were going to do for a whole day on vacation!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, that sounds great! I have always wanted to spend my birthday on the beach…or at least somewhere warm! I was always super jealous of all my friends with they’re summer birthday pool parties!

  24. For my 11th birthday, my parents finally let me get a dog (a family dog). I picked out the cutest fluff ball golden retriever puppy (I literally called every breeder and interviewed them, picking the best one!). She was my favorite. And my whole family treasured that dog every day of her life. Wow, I totally just got all depressing on you! But she was the best dog a girl could ask for (and we had her until last year! she tried to live forever)!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awwww, that is so sweet! None of the pets I ever had growing up made it longer than a year or so before my dad decided they needed “new homes”. I always hoped that the next one, would be THE ONE to change is mind, but sadly it never happened. That’s why sometimes, it’s hard for me to believe that I’ve had Tiger for almost nine years!

  25. Ok so I definitely need more young Heather pictures in my life. These are fabulous. Keep them coming.
Happy Blogiv…hack, hack, hack, cough, cough, fur ball. Hmmm I think you worked into my subconscious since I can’t say that phrase for some reason…maybe it was your ever so nice request not to say it. πŸ˜‰ Wish KMB a happy birthday and give her a big sloppy wet kiss from me, emphasis on the sloppy.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

One extra shhhhhloppy kiss coming right up! And as for the throwback pics? There will be more…oh yes, there WILL be more! πŸ˜‰

  26. Happy Blogiversary!

The exact same thing happened with my 16th and 17th birthdays too. My school obligation was a trip to Disney with our school’s marching band. So not too bad, but no cake or party πŸ™ And then my 17th birthday was one of my best ever the following year! πŸ™‚

  28. Cassie says:

Last weekend… definitely best thing I ate was a low country boil that my dad made (anti-Thanksgiving on Friday :))
