Don’t Toss the Toast!

Hey hey haaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Wow, I seem to be in a really good mood right now…and for good cause!

Yep, today is the first day in over THIRTY SIX HOURS that I haven’t felt like I was going to toss my cookies!

How about we celebrate?

WIAW Teal

You know, because every time a foodie gets her appetite back, an angel gets her wings, the fun and frills of a WIAW -type celebration is definitely justified! 😉

On Saturday afternoon, my stomach started feeling a bit off, but I just chocked it up to eating too much for breakfast…

Red Velvet Protein Pancakes - 7

Because let’s face it, when a plate of Red Velvet Protein Pancakes is sitting in front of you, you can’t NOT finish it! 😉

I met up with the man-friend later that day and we did some shopping at the Opry Mills Mall. While we were there, we started getting hungry so we decided to check out the food court to see what they had to offer. We had plans with some friends later that night for dinner so we were hoping to find something a bit light for lunch.

We ended up trying a place that was new to both of us, called Green Leaf’s. They offer a wide variety of wraps, paninis, and salads or you can even customize your meal by choosing your own meats, veggies, toppings, and dressing.

We ended up sharing a Balsamic Chicken and Roasted Peppers (on the left) and the a Turkey BALT (bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato).

After we finished, we walked around a bit more, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still not right with my stomach. I didn’t even clean my plate yet I felt like I’d eaten a huge Thanksgiving dinner! We had a couple of hours to kill before we needed to meet up with our friends for dinner at Bonefish Grill so I rested up on the couch until it was time to leave.

Once at the restaurant, I STILL wasn’t feeling right, but being the STUBBORN foodie that I am, there was NO WAY I was passing up the chance to get some Bang Bang Shrimp!

I enjoyed a couple of bites and when it came time to order, I decided to go with the
Baja Fish Tacos (because it was the smallest thing on the menu…and well, you guys know how I can never pass up fish tacos!).

After dinner, that was it…my body was DONE with giving me “little” signs!

I started getting sharp pains in my back and arms, all of a sudden, I had like NO energy, and then the “icing on the cake” if you will, I felt like I was going to toss my cookies tacos at any moment!

After a not-so-good night’s sleep, I woke up feeling absolutely miserable. I spent most of the day on the couch while the man-friend willingly stepped up into the position of nurse, hydrator, and cooker of sick food!

Sick food PERFECTION: Plain whole wheat toast with 1 egg + two egg whites, scrambled.

After taking some anti-nausea medicine, I practically slept ALL day. Somehow, I finally managed to find enough energy to (barely) make it back to my house later that night. Of course, the only reason I did was because I knew I didn’t leave Tiger enough food to make it through another day.

If he only KNEW how much I loved him!

Before I called it a night at 8:30pm, I whipped up a bowl of oat bran and topped it with half a banana and a bit of peanut butter.

I was able to eat half of it.

THIRTEEN hours later, I awoke feeling MUCH better, but still a bit wary of anything too elaborate for breakfast so I stuck to something simple:

Yogurt Mug

See? I even felt good enough to make it look pretty! 😀

Plain Chobani with puffed kamut, half a banana, and persimmon “goo” (just the inside of a SUPER ripe hachiya persimmon).

Even though my “bowl” of yogurt was actually a mug and not a very large portion at all, I felt SO full after breakfast so when it came time for lunch, I scaled back a bit.

Hummus & Veggies

Roasted pine nut hummus, broccoli, carrots, and unsalted tortilla chips.

About two hours later, I had a bit of an aftershock…

More toast for the tummy.

Luckily, the man-friend had sent me home with the anti-nausea medicine, so I took some and in an hour or so I was feeling better.

Like a STUBBORN idiot, I decided that since I was feeling better, that I was good enough to make it into work that night (especially since I had to call out sick on Sunday). What I DIDN’T figure in was that the anti-nausea meds also make you DROWSY!

I think it’s safe to say that was the LONGEST shift I’ve ever worked!

But at least I didn’t toss my cookies toast! 😉

After my shift, I slept like a ROCK (obviously) and have been feeling better ever since…though I’m still popping candied ginger and sipping on my favorite tea…no way I’m having another aftershock!

What is your go-to food when you’re not feeling well?

Are you a stubborn person?

  1. Glad you are feeling better! Nothing beats tea and toast when you are sick.
    Happy WIAW!

  2. Poor baby…hope you’re feeling better, Heather. Those pancakes look amazing…

  3. Hope you’re completley over what you had.

Even though you were ill your food still looks yum.

Soup is my go to food when I’m ill.

  4. I’m sorry you’re not feeling well! Hopefully it doesn’t last much longer.

And my go-to for when I’m feeling sick is cinnamon toast or chicken noodle soup. Both have anti-sickness properties :-p

Ahhh yes, good ol’ cinnamon toast…so much nostalgia behind such simplicity! We used to do “sugar toast” too when I was little…my mom would shake sugar up with food coloring and then sprinkle it over buttered toast…sounds horrible now, but I LOVED it as a kid! Lol

  5. Jessie says:

So good to hear that your feeling much better!!

&& Baja Fish Tacos from Bonefish are AMAZING & are exactly what i get almost every single time I go there. 🙂

  6. Lucie says:

Oh sorry that you felt sick!! It sucks and especially when you have the chance to go out for dinner and then you have no appetite at all and even feel nauseous. That wrap looks still pretty delish !! How pretty you create all of your food plates, I have to learn that from you. May I? 🙂
The only thing I can eat is my porridge when I feel sick. (http://swissfitchick.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/tuesday-recipes/) minus the pumpkin. It’s light, warm and easy to digest but filling!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmm, that porridge looks/sounds fantastic girlie! I love the way the oats taste after adding a whole egg…almost like custard! It’s been a while since I’ve whipped up a fancy bowl of oats and I think it’s time for that to change real soon! 😀

And the plating has DEFINITELY come with practice…I shudder when I look at my pics from some of my old posts! Lol

  7. You are so lucky you didn’t toss your tacos. I called my mommy from the bathroom floor Sunday night. So. Miserable. I thought I felt better this morning, but my tummy feels heavy after 1/4 C oatmeal. Oy.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh gosh sweetie! I knew you must have been pretty bad off when I saw your IG pics from your parent’s house. So glad mama was able to get you on the mend! My mom couldn’t do much since she was at work, but she did listen to me whine on the phone for a while which helped! 😉

  8. I’m glad you’re feeling better girl – being sick is no fun. Especially when it takes away your appetite! 😛

I haven’t really been sick in a few years so I can’t even remember when my favourite food is when I’m sick… probably soup and oatmeal!

  9. Oh no! Being sick is the WORST!!! But those red velvet pancakes look absolutely amazing. When I saw those on instagram, I Was like HOW does she do it?!

  10. Sorry you weren’t feeling well but I’m glad to hear it’s getting better. Everybody’s feeling a bit off these days, apparently – boo for sneaky colds. Being stubborn surely seems like your cure to get rid of sickness ;). And yes, I’m pretty stubborn, too. What can I say? I just like to get what I want when I want and you don’t want to step in between then :D.

  11. I’m such a stubborn person…it’s a given being a Taurus! Hope your back feeling fantastic soon missus! Pancakes…epic as always!

  12. Gorgeous pancakes and the rest of the eats rock as well of course!

  13. I seriously thought those pancakes was a cake when I clicked on it from WIAW 🙂 Great-looking eats, especially when you weren’t feeling good.

Carbs are my go-to food when I’m not feeling good. Chicken soup definitely. Made from bone broth it has so many good healing properties!

  14. Um WOW those pancakes look delicious! I definitely couldn’t stop eating them, either, no matter how awful I felt!

I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better – being sick is awful. If I have a cold, my favorite sick food is my mom’s chicken noodle soup, but if I have the flu, I usually stay away from food or eat lots of toast, like you. 🙂

  15. Ruta says:

I’m so glad you’re feeling better. It seems like everyone is getting sick lately.

On the bright side, I nominated your blog for an award. You can find the details here:

  16. I am so stubborn!

My go to sick food is ramen. Love it.

  17. OMG, everyone has this! I had something similar back in November & could not stomach a thing & barely could get myself out of a chair! FEEL BETTER!!!

BTW, another person that likes well done bread! 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yes, it’s a tricky art to master, but to me, the perfect toast is just to that point before it’s deemed cancerous! 😉

  18. Glad to hear you’re starting to feel better, love!

  19. Oh man we’re definitely on the same wavelength today – I’ve been battling a subtle bug with dry toast as well, and although I haven’t been struck with anything severe enough to warrant medicine or long periods of sleep, my stomach is definitely feeling off. Soooo I’ve been enjoying breakfast all day. Fruit. Cereal. Toast. Smoothies. Yup, that about sums it up 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, that’s exactly what I do anytime I’m feeling sick or even just “off”…resort to breakfast all day long! It will always be my number one comfort food!

  20. Oh lordy so so sorry to hear that you have been feeling so ill! I am literally petrified of throwing up and pretty much turn hysterical when I start to feel sick sooo I would have been a major hot mess!
And my goodness those pancakes, serious perfection 🙂

  21. Eeeew,I hate when that happens! Being sick seriously is the worst thing EVER… Hope you won’t have to deal with this again too soon,Heather!

  22. Kat says:

Seems like everyone is sick on WIAW. I am glad you are feeling a bit better. Eat more of that chocolate amazingness, maybe it helps 😉

  23. Lot-O-Choc says:

mmmm that looks like a beast of a wrap! yummm!
the pancakes look delicious as usual as well – making me so hungry!

  24. Yumm that restaurant sounds good & your wrap looks delicious! I loooove wraps… I wish there was a place like that around here. For some reason, I’m completely incompetent at making my own, haha.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh it’s easy peasy! The trick is to not get carried away and overstuff it (that lesson took me a WHILE to learn) and I find that the best wraps are the ones that I use hummus in…that stuff is like the glue of the wrap world! Lol

  25. So sorry you’ve been sick! I feel ya though. I’ve had mono for 2 1/2 months now! My go to is always, always, always whole wheat saltines and diet ginger ale. I literally go through them so quickly my poor husband has no chance to sit down before he has to go back to the store! Hope you start feeling better soon!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh dear, I hope YOU start feeling better soon! Mono for over two months?! I can only imagine what you’re going through! And HOW could I forget about saltines? Mmm, the perfect amount of saltiness!

  26. I’m not even going to address the question of my stubbornness. We’ll say yes, and leave it at that. [I refuse to be sick. Thus, I never get better.]

The bright, shining spot through it all is that you finally had persimmon goo. 🙂

[Also that you taught me via instagram how to fully maximize my oat bran intake.]

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yes, I have to say, now that I’ve FINALLY had goo, I can die happy…took that little bugger long enough to ripen for Pete’s sake! Lol And I’m always glad to help spread the oat bran joy…I am and always will be a volume eater! 😀

  27. Sounds like you got an awful bug. I am glad man-friend was there to help you out. Your recovery snacks look absolutely yummy too! Nothing like plain toast though when you are feeling a bit under the weather 🙂
