Farmers Market Freshness

Hey hey, my peoples!

Omg, I miss you guys SO much!

Just thought I’d pop in for a quick WIAW post because I can’t stand the feeling of being left out I have some major drool-worthy pics to share with you guys! πŸ˜‰

Although my pics today don’t showcase any snacks, I’ll tell you right now, I’ve been shoving fistfuls of fruits and veggies in my mouth on the regularΒ snacking healthfully for sure! Now that all my favorites are FINALLY coming back in season, my tummy couldn’t be happier! So, after checking out my collection of fresh eats, be sure to head over to Peas & Crayons and see what everyone else has been snacking on this week! πŸ˜€

I missed out on the opening day of the Downtown Market a few weeks ago…a certain retreat with a hundred or so wonderful ladies just happened to keep me from it…so I was super excited to finally get over there the following weekend!

Farmers Market Haul

My fresh farmers market loot!

And check it out…I found a new (to me) kale…

Siberian Kale

It’s called “Siberian Kale”…a bit softer than the curly kale, almost like a blend between kale and green leaf lettuce…I’m definitely a fan! πŸ˜€

As soon as I got home from the market, I just KNEW I had to get into one of those plump, juicy tomatoes…

Tuna MeltRE-enter the totally underrated TUNA MELT!

Seriously…I’ll never understand the bad rap that tuna melts get…sooooo good!!

Tuna Melt with Mustard

And of course, it only gets better with liquid gold mustard!

Strawberry

The next day I put those perfectly plump strawberries to good use…

Strawberry Smoothie with Muesli

And of course, it only gets better with crack muesli! πŸ˜‰

Serving Bowl Salad

Then there was the salad to end ALL salads (as you can see, I’m totally digging my flippin’ awesome new bowls!)…

Frito Ranch Salad

And of course, it only gets better with ranch juice dressing (and my new obsession with Frito “croutons”) πŸ˜‰

But that was after my warm and toasty E.L.T (not to be confused with an E.L.F!)…

Egg White Cheese Tomato Sandwich

Egg, lettuce, and tomato anyone?

Egg Lettuce Tomato Sandwich

Of course, it only gets better with ooey gooey only slightly moldy cheese! πŸ˜‰

No shame, no fear…

I laugh in the face of expiration dates!

Muahaha!

Do you regularly visit your farmers market?

What fresh fruits and veggies have you been loving on lately?

  1. Yum all your eats look so delicious! Especially the cheesy egg sandwich πŸ™‚

I have been loving pink lady apples, bananas and I’ve just discovered persimmons which are a new to me fruit but I am obsessed with them.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, persimmons are my favorite!! Our stores didn’t carry them long for the season and I totally feel gypped…and I’m therefore insanely jealous at the thought of you sinking your teeth into that plump juicy flesh! πŸ˜›

  2. Fran@BCDC says:

I must now make an E.L.T. !!! That looks so good and love the mustard on the tuna melt. I think I’d put it on the E.L.T, too! Love farmer’s markets! Have a great day, Heather!

  3. Lucie says:

Ooooh, all that FRESHNESS!!! So pretty! And your sandwiches – I just want them NOW. Could you send some over so I can dig in on them on the plane and make everyone around me jealous? Ha.
I LOVE farmer markets. I am on a baby cucumber kick currently. And overcooked broccoli. Sorry, but I just love when it gets that mash-y consistency.

  4. Tuna melts are awesome! I can’t be friends with anyone who doesn’t like them. I love putting chopped pickle & celery into the mix for a lunch tangy crunch.

OMG you just blew my mind with your melty egg sandwich. Yum yum YUM.

I just planted our garden and I can’t wait for all my stuff to start growing – we have, um, 45 (?!) heirloom tomato plants happening right now. I’m scared.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

FORTY FIVE?!?! Holy jeez! Oh girl, you’re lucky I’m not your neighbor…I’d totally be sneaking into your garden in the middle of the night stealing those tomatoes! Lol

Mmmm, relish, celery, and boiled egg is a MUST for a GOOD tuna salad/melt…I just hate that I don’t always have the time to do it like I want!

  5. We missed you too! πŸ™‚ I’ve been eating fruit like it’s my job. Loooove.

  6. You know all about my love affair withthe farmer’s marekt. πŸ™‚

I’m so glad I’m not the only one eating questionable cheeses… I mean cheese IS mild so it must be ok to eat. Right? I haven’t died yet.

  7. betty says:

my local farmers market is on thursday nights and i struggle to get there.. i went last week and they had no produce πŸ™ i’m so sad. i guess thats what i get for living in the middle of no where! the ELT looks amaze!!!

  8. That egg sandwich looks AHHHMAZING!

  9. What have you done to me? The meal that sounds best to me in this post is … the salad. As you may or may not know I’m a self-declared non-salad-fiend so that’s just not possible. Granted, though, yours is far from the limpy-leaf-mostly-lettuce boredom that I’m not fond of. Yes to beans, broccoli and Frito croutons :)!
Regularly visiting the Farmers Market is a must. Even though ours are way less interesting than those in the US seem to be – from what I’ve seen all over the blog world – I still leave a good chunk of my weekly spendings right there. Bland produce from the supermarket can’t compare to the taste of those fruit and veggies. Don’t even get me started swooning about these amazingly sweet and juicy pears I got on my last trip πŸ˜‰ …
    Happy Wednesday, Heather!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmm, nothing beats a perfectly sweet and juicy pear…I always feel like I won the lotto when I get a really good one! lol

And seriously? You and your non-salad-fiend rear need to come over for a visit…I’ll teach you a thing or two about non-limpy-leaf-mostly-lettuce salads! Actually, stay tuned…I’ve got a post that will blow your mind coming this Wednesday! πŸ˜€

      xoxo

  10. That strawberry…yum!

You’ve got me hungry after looking at all that delicious food porn.

  11. Food is prettier than any piece of art I’ve ever seen. Plus, you can eat it, so win-win. I love Farmer’s Markets, but I don’t seem to get to them as often as I’d like. Maybe I’ll make that my summer goal!

And also? You’re freaking me out with the moldy cheese and the expiration date thing. I am super obedient to those damn dates! If something is 5 seconds past it’s expiration date, I toss it. Crazy town over here.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! The man-friend is the same way…slowly but surely I’m working on him! Trust me, I’ve eaten PLENTY of things past the date (hello Greek yogurt that expired in March!) and I’m still alive and kicking! πŸ˜‰

  12. Lauren says:

Everything looks delicious! I am personally a huge fan of tuna melts. I like to do them open-faced with a few slices of Dubliner Irish cheddar and tomato on top.

Your retreat pictures are hilarious! I love the one of Laura dancing. πŸ˜€

  13. I will never turn up my nose at a tuna melt…I’m making them for dinner tonight, actually!
And YES on the expiration dates. I look at them more like a suggestion. If it looks and smells ok, I assume it won’t kill me :-p
I’m at the farmers market every weekend – I have a year-round one about 2 blocks from me, which is wonderful!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Year round?! TWO BLOCKS AWAY?! Ugh, I’m sooooo jealous! Ours only runs May-October!

And seriously, I swear I must have a stomach of steel (unfortunately not abs of steel, but I digress)…I’ve eaten some pretty questionable stuff in my day and no worries here! I think the extra dose of penicillin must be helping my immune system! Or maybe the fact that I work in a hospital! πŸ˜‰

  14. Purelytwins says:

Siberian Kale — that sounds delicious. we will have to keep an eye out at our farmers market to see if any of them do that kale!

  15. Your food always looks SO good! Like, I want to dig into my computer screen good. Also, I am digging those bowls – adorable! I have been loving cherries and avocados lately… can’t get enough of ’em!

  16. Holy moly, that cheese! I also like tuna melts but only if I make them myself, I know the ones they make in places contain mayo which is not something I’m crazy about.

I wish our Farmers Market was affordable. Meh.

PS. I shared one of your pancake recipes in my roundup today for 100 Most Irresistible Seasonal Recipes using Summer Fruit πŸ˜‰ Go check it!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, thank you Kammie!! Sorry to just be responding…I’ve gotten WAY behind in the last couple of weeks! I’ll definitely be checking it out!! πŸ™‚

  17. Love fresh farmers market loot! The colored carrots are so pretty! We have a huge farmers market close by on Sundays but are busy most weekends so don’t make it as often as I’d like. We do frequent a much smaller one on Tuesdays though but there’s not as much stuff!

  18. Mmm, I agree. Tuna melts get a bad rap, but they are delicious!! It all looks soooo good!

  19. Gorgeous!!! I want to try that kale!!! πŸ™‚ Would make an awesome green monster I bet!

  20. I love egg, lettuce, tomato and mustard sandwiches! It’s always a plus if I have some Munster cheese to melt onto too! Your salad, yes it looks amazing! I love overloaded salads.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmmm, munster cheese! Man, I haven’t had that in YEARS!! Need to put it on the list…though lately, I can’t seem to get enough Gouda! I made a killer ham and cheese omelet with some over the weekend! πŸ™‚

  21. Rach says:

The farmer’s market is the best! Your produce looks great, friend!

  22. Gah! I’m so jealous. Our farmer’s market hasn’t even started yet! So annoying. I think it begins in a few weeks though, and then it runs until October. Still . . . I’m so ready for it!

  23. You always have the best pics & yummy looking food! I am in LOVE with those bowls you got, so darn cute!! That tuna melt sounds very tasty… gotta love the mustard!

I had to work last Saturday during the farmer’s market & could only look out the windows longingly (it runs on the street right in front of the store I work at) – talk about torture! Looks like people were getting some goodies though! Hoping to hit it up this Saturday. Been loving all the strawberries & peppers. πŸ™‚

  24. Damn girl I miss you, especially when you put out posts like these. You had all my favorite things and I love seeing your farmers market finds. Seriously, few things make me happier, although you know what those few things are too. I love fresh strawberries and tomatoes this time of year, and your sandwich and salad look amazing. And that ooey gooey good cheese. Cheese just makes everything better and you can always cut off those moldy little bits or eat around them and it’ll be fine. Besides, you can’t let that stuff go to waste.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

EXACTLY!! Hey, the way I see it…it’s just an extra dose of penicillin to help with my ever-strenthening immune system! What the hospital doesn’t take care of, I manage with my “blue” cheese! πŸ˜‰

  25. What a great haul from the farmer’s market! I love colourful heirloom carrots – have you used them yet? And that kale sounds really neat. I’ve never seen that kind before! It’s still really early in the growing season here, so our market doesn’t have much yet. I can’t wait until strawberries are ready – it should be any day now!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh girl, I’ve been throwing those carrots in a salad practically every day…and still get giddy every time I look at them! And I’m so excited for strawberry season! I’ve gotten a few from the farmers market, but I’m really anxious to get down to the farm and pick some of my own…hopefully this weekend I’ll get the chance! πŸ™‚

  26. I want to dive right into your screen and eat all of this food! It’s all so fresh and colorful! Can I come over some time and have you make me a sandwich?? I will bring cookies!

    Two things:
    1. Good thing your bowl is labeled. You might get confused and think it’s a plate.
    2. I used to dislike tomatoes but I keep trying them and now I really want to buy a whole bunch of them and eat slice after slice!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

All you had to say was that magical “c” word…your wish is my command! πŸ˜‰

I seriously LOVE this bowl! When I spotted all the dishes at the store, I took one look at the little 5 inch “salad plate” and was like “yeah right, bring on the serving bowl!!” Lol
Tomatoes for the win!! I have always been a fan…growing up we used to make cheese and tomato sandwiches with tomatoes fresh from the garden for lunch almost every day during the summer!

  27. Ooh, your E.L.T. looks incredible! Even though I just ate dinner, my mouth is watering right now! Also, your salad bowl looks delicious, too! I’ve been on a HUGE salad kick right now, eating one for lunch and dinner. I just can’t seem to get enough of them these days! I think it must be the weather, because I have no desire to use my oven or stove. πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my gosh girl, I totally feel you on the salads! I’ve been eating them NON-STOP lately! Whenever I DO actually fire up the oven, it feels so weird! Haha!

  28. Oh goodness the colors in these photos! Makes me want to reach through the screen and eat all the things.

I’ve been seriously loving on raw veggies and fruits of all kinds. When the weather gets super hot I crave them like crazy. I get to the farmers market now and then, but usually by the time I get there all the good stuff is gone! I have a theory that all the NYC restaurants buy up the good stuff first thing in the morning so the rest of us get whats left. But it’s still fun to go every now and then.

  29. Sarah Pie says:

That ELT looks like heaven on a sandwich πŸ™‚ Our “farmers” market always seems to be lacking on the famers… but that doesn’t stop me from going in search of veggies to much on for the week.

  30. Iris says:

Love the beautiful pictures, Heather! Everything looks so fresh and delicious. I’ve been loving mangoes and chard lately. Rainbow chard is especially fun!! I have just finished up Jamie’s IE Challenge and am thrilled to find that after an initial disinterest in vegetables, I am slowly returning to my obsession with produce! It feels so good to eat those fresh foods because I want them, not because I feel like I should. πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you Iris! And I’m SO happy to hear things are going well after the challenge! I know it was difficult for me at first too once I started “indulging” in a lot of my previously banned foods…I swear I went like 2 weeks hardly eating a single fruit or vegetable, but after that all I wanted for a week straight were salads! Funny how all it takes is a little trust to start to see the balance taking effect, isn’t it?

  31. Alex and I hit the Farmer’s Market basically every weekend, and it’s awesome! It keeps us well stocked with produce for the whole week! It’s easy to eat healthy when your kitchen is full of deliciousness!

  32. Allie says:

Haha, I totally made a tuna melt with my farmer’s market finds. We could be sandwich twins. Except mine didn’t have mustard. Which is slightly disappointing, but then again, may not have paired the best with pimento cheese. Tuna melts ARE underrated–we need a movement to bring back the melt!

  33. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw so many of your pics on Instagram today! I might have to cut off your pics cause I want to eat every time I see them! πŸ˜‰ That last pic with the cheese – holy crap & I can’t even eat cheese! πŸ˜‰

  34. OMG that tuna melt looks DROOL!!!!

  35. I must admit I’m a bit jealous of your produce haul! We are–thankfully–just getting all that gorgeousness in at our market, so I’m not just buying an insane amount of bread and potatoes. πŸ˜‰

Everything, as usual, looks phenomenal. Hope it tasted just as delicious!

P.S. Chip croutons are the best. Also, crumbled rice cakes are fun!
