A Weekend in Tenne-saw-ippi

Hello, loves!

So, I started typing up this post last week but, since dear ol’ broccoli decided to go into    a week-long coma, it never made it to publish! Now that she’s back up and running, I can FINALLY tell you guys about mine and the man-friend’s trip to Memphis! 😀

It all started when I awoke to this deliciousness early Friday morning….

Peanut Butter Berry WaffleA big fluffy waffle topped with peanut butter, fresh berries (thankfully, brought from home), with just a drizzle of  syrup!

I have to say, the choices from the hotel breakfast bar weren’t the best, but luckily they made up for it in waffles (which I can never pass them up) and coffee (which I practically lived on throughout the weekend)!

Coffee

I may or may not have had quite the collection of coffee creamers
(for the man-friend) by the end of the weekend! 😛

After some chill time in the hotel room where we may or may not have fallen back to sleep, we decided to head out to one of the man-friend’s favorite places for lunch…

But you’ll just have to wait until tomorrow for that!

With two very full bellies, we figured some walking was in order so we headed downtown to check out Mud Island

Memphis Mud Island

We road the monorail over, toured the little museum filled with history of the Mississippi river, steamboats, and blues and jazz music, and then walked around outside and checked out the scale model of the Mississippi river while we talked about all the states we’d ever traveled to.

Mud Island

It was cute to see all the kiddos wading around in the water and the weather was absolutely perfect for a good afternoon walk. Also, I have to say, it was SO kind of the employees to leave out little snacks along the way…

Drumstick anyone? 😉

And of course, we were both shocked to see that even though the man-friend had JUST had his makeover the night before, they were already on top of things with portraits of him hanging on nearly every wall…

The Man-friend & Elvis

How DID they do it??

Back to our conversation of travel (for the record, the man-friend has been almost EVERYwhere!), we thought it’d be fun to cruise down the road about fifteen minutes in the opposite direction of our hotel…JUST so I can now say I’ve been to Arkansas! 😉

Pizza

And later that night we met up with the man-friend’s parents for dinner over another border and another newly visited (to me) state…Mississippi! We ate at a cute little pizzeria called Avellino’s (some of the best crust and sauce I’ve ever had!) and then ended up going back to their place and chatting into the WEEEEE hours of the night morning!

The next day, we woke up and met someone very special for breakfast lunch…

Melissa & Me

Sooooooooooo excited to finally meet this GORGEOUS lady!!!

Melissa and I have grown really close over the last six months but until this day had never met face to face. I wasn’t surprised in the least how natural our conversation seemed to flow over lunch…just like we’ve known each other for years! And luckily her fiance and the man-friend seemed to hit it off really well too!

Memphis Young Avenue DeliWe met at Young Avenue Deli and again were graced with perfect weather for dining al fresco, but yep, I’m saving those pics for tomorrow! 😉

After lunch, is where the man-friend and I cultivated our curiosities and ventured inside two of our favorite stores…

TJ Maxx & Big LotsGets. Us. Every. Time!

We shopped till we (just about) dropped. Luckily, thanks to Melissa, I had a little fuel to get me through the last bit of it…

Raspberry White Chocolate Quest BarJust as good as it sounds…especially after sitting in a hot car for a couple of hours! Only bad part: picking the raspberry seeds out of your teeth afterwards! :-/

Later that night, we met some friends for dinner and a movie…

Movie Ticket Wolverine

And you guessed it…dinner pics tooooooomorrow! Haha! But I’ll tell you right now, Wolverine? So worth it!

On Sunday, we met our friends for breakfast at a place called Perkins, hung out a bit and then grabbed one last meal before heading out of Elvisland.

One thing I LOVE about traveling is getting the chance to try all the local food, but after three days of eating our way through plates FULL fried, creamy, plastic-y?, cheesy, saucy, and gravy-covered food, I HAD to make a special request…

Whole Foods

Sweet baby JESUS, let there be vegetables!!

Whole Foods Salad BarIn the box: EV-ER-REEEEEEEE-THANG!!!

For the record, one of my most expensive WF salads yet…ELEVEN BUCKS!

And I. ate. it. ALL!

What do you always hope to find on a hotel breakfast buffet?

How many US states have you visited?

US States Map

I know, I really need WANT to travel more, but so far, I’ve been to 18!

  1. What a fun trip!!! Too bad you’ve already been to VA, or I’d use that as an excuse to make you come visit 😉 haha

  2. At first I thought you hadn’t been to the red states and I was very concerned! Only to realize that you live in one of those red states…I’m special. 😉

  3. Oh man that looks like the perfect waffle.. and the perfect trip too!

  4. Yay! WHat a fun trip. Oh my Gosh, how I MISS Whole Foods. I think my salads were even more expensive there. No wonder, I packed them with 7 oz (or so) of chicken and eggs 🙂
Actually, I’ve been to quite some places in the US. NYC, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, LA (the whole coast there actually). And I will be BACK!!

  5. Another movie I need to see! Wolverine 🙂 I have the first at home so I need to watch it in its entirety, then I will go see the sequel.

What hotel did you stay at? We always stay at the same one every Thanksgiving because they have Belgian waffle makers. Comfort Inn I think, or one of their offshoots. Of course now I just have to watch my brother enjoy the waffles, but just the smell is intoxicating 🙂

Oh man, I can’t remember! I’ll have to ask the man-friend since he did all the booking and stuff! I’ll get back to you! 😉

They seriously need a waffles and syrup body spray! Lol

  6. Ahhhhh, we ALMOST got an ass-shot of the man friend. Score. Now I’m super curious as to how many US states I’ve been to… Hmmmmm…..

  7. Looks like a great trip! I’m so bummed I ordered some of the White Chocolate Raspberry Quest Bars and just received an email they are back ordered 🙁 Ugh, I’m dying to try them!

  8. Hey hey hey!!!!
Yeah girl! I loved seeing you too 🙂
And I haven’t been over to that Big Lots/TJ Maxx and TOTALLY need to!!

  9. I adore that map, that’s a cute idea! I’ve done a bit of travelling, but I definitely need to do more…my mom’s a travel agent, so it’s been instilled in me 😉 Looks like you guys had an awesome trip! After a few grease-heavy meals, my body starts begging me to eat a damn vegetable 😉 I’ve only had WF once, I need to get to one again!

On a breakfast buffet, I’m always looking for french toast or waffles…an omelet bar is pretty awesome too!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh man, omelet bars are like the holy grail of breakfast buffets to me! I about died when they had the one at Blend this summer! 🙂

  10. I would love to see some of the states! I have only driven through 4, not even visited any. Lucky for me, I HAVE seen quite a bit of Canada as well as countries all Over the world, but the US is still undiscovered for me. You’re right about the new quest bar. Delicious and floss-worthy 😉

  11. I kind of love that the new Quest bar has actual raspberry seeds in it! So jealous you got to meet Melissa. Her creativity always blows me away. 🙂

  12. At least your hotel breakfast had waffles! It is the WORST thing ever when you go and their idea of a “continental” breakfast is bruised produce and cereal. Not cool!

  13. Okay that waffle is infinitely better than any breakfast I’ve had at a hotel. But that might just be because I’m usually too cheap to pay for hotel breakfasts – I find they’re usually sooo overpriced! But if they have a buffet for a decent price I’ll hit it up. I get really excited when I see fresh fruit, oatmeal and pancakes!

I’ve only been to Michigan, New York, Maine, and Massachusetts. But I really want to visit more of the states – especially California and the south!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

If you can believe it, this was from the COMPLIMENTARY breakfast buffet! I have to say though, the berries totally made it! *pats self on back* 😉

  14. Sounds like such a fun weekend! When it comes to breakfast buffets, I think as long as there are fresh fruit, hardboiled eggs or plain yogurt- I think its ok to conjure something decent up- I’ve had some horror scenes with fluorescent eggs and bacon which was black. Fail.

  15. SO much fun! I think I’ve been to 19 states. Luvy has been to many more than me though!

The man friend and Luvy need to meet. Double date soon?? Miss you love!

  16. I am totally geeking out about that map!!

  17. Anie U says:

My mom, sister, and I went to Memphis in July for a little girls’ weekend, and we did the exact same thing in driving into Arkansas just to say we’d been there! Great minds think alike 🙂

  19. Well obviously being an Australian, I haven’t been to that many US states, but I have been to California (multiple times), Florida (twice), Louisiana (once) and Mississippi (also once)!

I am so jealous of your adventures!

  20. katie says:

Come to PA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, like now! Ha! It is so fun to travel! I can’t wait to travel again once Rocco a little older! We actually might go to NYC in September though, just him and I , might be stressful but fun!

Love ya girl! Looks like this trip was a blast!

  21. Lee says:

    I’ve been to 23 states.

  22. SO MANY THINGS TO SAY.

It was my goal to hit every state in the country by the time I was 30. It’s not looking too good on that front, so I’ll push it back to 40. 😉 However, when my sis and I drove to Texas, we drove through Oklahoma just so I could say I’d been there (and sing “OOOOOOOOOKlahoma!” as we entered the state). Speaking of Wolverine, have you seen Hugh Jackman in the movie version of that musical?

I am SO JEALOUS you and Melissa got to spend time together. I love you both to pieces, and I wish I could have been the fifth wheel at that lunch!

Dude, we used to go to Perkins after plays in high school because it was the only place open late enough after curtain…and they didn’t seem to mind ridiculous drama dorks taking over.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Wait, Hugh Jackman was in a movie version of Oklahoma?! The only musical I knew he did was Les Mis…which I STILL have yet to see! :-/
