Confessions of a Bad Blogger

1. I just sat down and realized I had no idea what to post today.

And since we all know how much TV I watch (read: none), Arman’s link up isn’t really an option. So, I figured I’d just go and get all truthsie on you today. Because yeah, I’m not a planner…and if you were on my side of the blog right now, you would see no pre-written posts, partially written posts, or even fragments of posts. Yeah…

2. Yesterday, I answered comments from a post I wrote three weeks ago. I want you all to know that I do read (and treasure) each and every comment left on the blog, but if I don’t remember to do it BEFORE publishing another post, they tend to get lots in my little comment window thingie. <- Because that’s totally what it’s called!

3. Even though I’ve read skimmed at least a half a dozen articles on it, I really have no idea what SEO means…all I know is that I should title my recipe posts by the recipe so people can actually find them with Google. So now, every time I go back and see an old post where I thought I was just the cleverest little thing with my super quirky title, I want to kick myself…

4. One word. BlogLovin. Two words. RUN AWAY!

5. Remember these guys? No? Good. Then maybe you forgot how I promised I would try making a vegan version of these not long after I posted them…over a year ago!

6. Or how about that life-changing book I was going to review? While I have no excuse other than my aging mind for the nuggets, I’m gonna pull my ADD card on this one! I sat down…I made notes…I made more notes…and by the time I was finished, I had HALF A BOOK…for a review. Needless to say, I got overwhelmed! 🙁

7. My ‘About Me’ tab STILL hasn’t been updated! I write about myself all the time…so why do I find it SO hard to write…about myself?

8. I forget to promote my posts on social media. I have an automatic tweet set up whenever a post goes live…and anything I upload on IG, I typically post to Twitter, but I  forget I even HAVE a Facebook page…Pinterest is really where things just go to die…and Google+? What the heck IS that? And why do I have one?

9. Sometimes I just wish I could use Instagram to blog. But then I get attacked by spammers and lose the motivation to post anything for days.

10. I feel like I need to put something up about the recipe I created and photographed this weekend just to hold myself accountable for 1. A recipe post and 2. A photography post. Plus, I hated to end on an odd number. I promise I WILL have these two posts up later this week…as soon as I sort through the 200+ pictures. 😯

And you KNOW that’s not an exaggeration!

What do you confess today?

Please tell me I’m not the only one completely lost when it comes to social media?

  1. I can help you if you have questions!

Also, I think we should start a trend: writing each other’s About Me pages. I need to update mine and I’m at a loss.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank GOD!! I felt like such a weirdo when the words just wouldn’t flow! I’m like, it’s ME!! I know me! So why can’t I WRITE IT?! Hmm, I’m thinking my next visit is going to involve some blogging 101 for sure! 😀

  2. I don’t go anywhere near Google + and if you head to my about me page, you’d think I don’t work in music anymore and still live in LA. SO MUCH HAS CHANGED! 😉

  3. Bah, I need to update my about me page as well…I’m pretty sure that’s the most challenging page to work on!

  4. Allison says:

I am so glad I am not the only one who is beyond lost when it comes to SEO…. But let’s be serious I’m lost when it comes to the majority of bloggy goodness & trying to learn it hurts my head!

I love your photog posts can’t wait for your next installation!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Good to know I’m not the only one out there with a blog talk-induced headache! Thank you so much, Allison! The next photography post WILL be up this week…I PROMISE! 😀

  5. I wouldn’t really say I’m lost when it comes to social media, but right now I have no motivation or even an inkling to get involved. I have an instagram. I have a pinterest. I *have* a twitter (with maybe 10 tweets to my name?) but I don’t really use social media to promote my blog. #badbloggerx2

I also promise recipes and don’t ever get around to actually carrying through with them. And comments? Ha. I just caught up on comments for the past few weeks too. And I still have some from last year that I never responded to…. Awful.

SEO is so intriguing to me. And I’ve read quite a few posts on it too. What I find hilarious is that all of the writers promise that it will be perfectly clear what SEO is by the end… But I’m not entirely sure they understand it themselves. Maybe they pretend to understand? Or just suck at writing. Well, maybe not that last one hopefully since most do BLOG for a living. Maybe I caught them on an off day.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh girl, I feel the same way! IF I make it to the second paragraph of those posts, I’m so confused that my head hurts and I all I see is “YOU’RE DOING EVERYTHING WRONNNNNNNNNG!!” Yeah, so then I just shut my laptop and walk away! Ha!

I think one thing we just have to remind ourselves is that we’re human…and WE don’t do this for a living. It’d be totally different if we were just sitting around at home all day shirking our blogging responsibilities, but I know, at least for me, blogging isn’t even in the top FIVE of my things I “have” to get to in a day…gotta take care of ourselves first, right? 🙂

  6. I think you should still try to make a vegan version of those chicken nuggets! 😉

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh believe me…I’ve thought about it PLENTY of times…I even have notes! I just need to actually get in the kitchen (and find the motivation) to actually get to experimenting!

  7. Bahaha, I LOVE number 8!! I have no freaking idea why I own a google+. NO.IDEA. Twitter isn’t open on my ipad nor PC EVER and the only things my poor twitter followers see are IG posts. SO BAD.
How about that I try to get self-hosted since almost a year??? Besides really unrelatable Blog Designers, I am SO lazy and terrified on finding out how to. I know I would mess everything up, lose all my blog material and end up throwing my Laptop out the window with an exaggerated scream and tears. I need someone to make it for me. I’m blonde, so that’s normal!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Girl, what you need…is JAY! He’s the guy who did my shift to self-hosting two years ago and he’s absolutely GREAT! He knows all the in’s and out’s of the bloggy computer stuff that I know nothing about AND? he can actually explain things to you in terms you can understand! Designing new pages and all that jazz would be someone else’s deal, but if you’re really serious about making the switch to self-hosting, let me know and I’ll email you his contact info! 😀

  8. Lyric says:

Girl you are not alone! This past week I’ve been super busy studying of exams and my posts have been far and few. Its ok it happens!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Lyric! And can I just say (because I’m pretty sure I’ve never said it before – outside my head), I LOVE your name! Seriously, it makes me happy just to see it pop up in my “comment window thingie”! 😉

  9. I am not great with social media either. I started a FB page for my blog but I don’t know what to do with it?? Oh and I don’t know how to use twitter and could care less about it….

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Other than just copying and pasting links, I’m pretty clueless too! I tried to respond to someone’s tweet the other day and ended up retweeting what they said to me! Oops?

  10. Maria says:

Haha. Funny about the SEO stuff. My husband is an SEO expert (as in, it’s his job!), so he cringes when I don’t title things correctly or name my photos. If you ever feel inclined to learn more about it, let me know and I’ll send you his guide.

I just started using BlogLovin and I must say that I hate it and Feedly is much easier to use!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“…or name my photos” <- Omg, STILL kicking myself for going A YEAR AND A HALF without titling any of my pictures...seriously? WHAT was I thinking? I actually went back and forth between BlogLovin and Feedly when Google Reader went kaput and I decided I like BlogLovin better, but right now my problem is that neither one of them are capable of reading things FOR me! Haha! I have over 200 unread posts in there! 😯

  11. HAHA this was suuuuuch a cute post OMG Heather I loved it. And no you are totally not clueless. YOU SOUND EXACTLY LIKE MOI

  12. Haha I am so with you – I am hopeless at planning posts. I just sit at my computer and I’m like “hmmmmmmmmm, whatever will I post today”. That’s probably why SIL is mostly my recipes and rambles ;P

I always find about me pages so hard to right – because you don’t want to sound like you’re in love with yourself – but no one also wants to read you putting yourself down. Complicated balance!

Hmm confession for today? Even though I’ve spent like 10000001 hours lately sorting out my props cupboard (cough, half a linen press which I have taken over, cough) I am desperately trying to stop myself from buying more things which I have no room for – but then whilst filling my mental shopping list with more props, I’m also thinking about buying an extra set of drawers to hold more things…. and a freezer so my freezer is not overflowing with baked goods like it is now 😛 Help me!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Help you? As in help you eat through your freezer full of baked goods? Hmm, ok…twist my arm! 😉 We really should talk about an SIL delivery system here! Ha! And oh gosh, don’t even get me started on MY prop collection! I’ve banned myself from ALL kitchen stores…and I have TWO cupboards full! Ha!

  13. I get it – I resemble it – I feel guilt but trying to rid myself of that guilt – life is busy & stressful so… have to do what I can & that is it.. 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

That is a GREAT mindset to have, Jody! I know most of it’s just me putting more pressure on myself…damn perfectionism! I just have to remember that I’m only human…and this is NOT my job! 🙂

  14. Krista says:

Wait, what’s the deal withBlogLovin? I use it…is there something I’m missing?? My confession is that I’m clueless about why I should run from BlogLovin. Ha!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh no! There’s nothing WRONG with BlogLovin’ itself…it’s just that my unread posts have gotten up to ohhhhh around 200! THAT’S why I want to run away! Lol

  15. I don’t think you’re a bad blogger. Things some up and it just shifts your focus sometimes. No worries on the posts, you got time. 🙂

I find it hard to write about myself as well. It’s like.. “Who am I?” Such a philosophical question. xD

I hope everything goes smoothly for you and that you have an amazing week! 🙂

P.S. That picture gave me a good chuckle. 😀

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, thank you, Natalie! Your comments always brighten my day…such a breath of fresh air! And it means even MORE to me to know that you have that positivity while in your condition. I really hope you’re feeling better and healing fast, sweets! *hugs*

  16. I love this post! I sometimes feel like a complete knobhead when it comes to blogging. Some bloggers seem to be such pros and have it all figured out, and that is totally not me. I know squat about SEO, advertising, optimum posting times… I’ve just been too lazy to make the effort to learn about it all! 😛

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, let me just say, your laziness is just saving you from a HUGE headache! There is so much out there…it’s not hard to get overwhelmed. I just try to keep in mind the reason that I blog…for me…because it’s fun!

  17. Breath baby, breath.
There’s really no one, other than yourself, who says you need to do all these things and that they need to be done by a certain time. If you miss some comments one day, it’ll be fine. In fact maybe you should blow off a day just to recoup and recover. It’ll be alight, I promise.
Oh and I know even less than you about all the social media stuff, but we’ll figure it out one day, or enough to keep on blogging, which we’re already doing, so it must be all good. So I say, cut yourself some slack, and since I’m the authority on such things (self-appointed of course), you should listen. You should probably also drink another glass of wine and deal with those comments or Bloglovin tomorrow. Perhaps a little Mark as Read might be in order. I won’t be offended, especially if it gives you a night of peace.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Have I TOLD you lately how much I love you? Oh wait, yeah…I just screamed it to at you in one of my last comments! 😉 You know, when I was typing this post up last night, I was all like “Wah wah wah…I’ll never be good enough” but THEN, when I woke this morning, I was like, “Wait a minute…I do the best I can! This is NOT my job…I DON’T get paid to do it…and um, why do I blog in the first place? Oh yeah, because it’s FUN!” Hmm, I should also add that I felt a lot more positive after a solid 8 hours of sleep (funny how that works, huh?). But your comment just sends it home even more and I just want to say thank you for being my self-appointed authority figure! I was hoping to get the recipe up for the bars this morning, but since I haven’t even STARTED looking/editing pictures AND I just realized I left the notes to the recipe AT HOME, I guess it’ll just have to wait until Tuesday, won’t it? And I’m just gonna take a stab in the dark here and say that the world probably isn’t going to end if people have to wait one more day for their granola bars. 😉

  18. Google + baffles me! I’m trying to focus all of my energy on one SM outlet at a time. Currently it’s pinterest aka the foodie black hole.

  19. My recipe page hasn’t been updated for OVER a year… pinterest what? G+?? don’t get me started…

  20. I love this post, my criciferous friend. Especially the part about the book review. How I can relate. Legit ended up writing another novel….

Social media, blogging, SEO….they all confuse the HELL out of me- I’m currently in the process of getting a blog makeover, but I can’t even google the right search terms to find it…blog makover is probably some kid’s computer game.

I’d write your ‘About Me’ tab but then you’d probably want to throw a baboon at me.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

A redesign? Oh yes, I’ve had grand dreams for my baby broccoli blog to have a complete superstar makeover, but I just can’t seem to justify spending the money when she’s not exactly the ugliest of ducklings to begin with. Plus, I can be so fickle…not sure if anyone’s even noticed but that big fancy header I spent HOURS making back in October got the boot last month! Now I have something that’s practically what I started with! 😯

A baboon, huh? Now that’s one you don’t hear every day! Lmao!

  21. Uhh, SEO? More like S-E-NO!! Still don’t really get it. I just use normalish titles and tag stuff on each post. Boom.

I suck at Twitter, I suck at responding to blog comments (although I read every single one, since they come in email, which I love), and I don’t have a good “posting schedule.”

For the record, I still think your blog is fab.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Seriously girl, I’ve SEEN your school schedule! Honestly, I don’t even see where you find the time to blog at all! But I kinda like your unpredictability! Oh and for the record, I think your face is fab! 😉

  22. I so understand what you mean! I cope by simply ignoring SEO altogether! I see my blog as a hobby that makes me happy and not as a business I need to improve. I am sure there is a lot of room for improvement but I just ignore it. If I saw it that way it would start to stress me out. I would start to check my stats and I can be quite a bit obsessed with numbers. So I keep it as Carly with S-E-NO 😉

With social media I am the same. My little blog keeps me occupied enough and I just forget I could post something on instagram for days. I don’t have a Twitter accout and my FB page is simply used for staying in touch with people I see only once in a while. I know I have a google+ account though I never asked for one and that is the closest I’ve come to using it.

About me pages are nightmarish to write! I simply sound never like myself. But I like yours so I believe your update will be also great 😉

    • kissmybroccoli says:

You make a damn good point, Juli! And thank you so much for your heartfelt comment! The blog IS my hobby…not my job…and at the end of the day, it should make me happy…not stress me out! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one out there who is completely social media-illiterate too! 😉

  23. Chrystal M. says:

I’m a social media junkie. I have an account for all the major players but I don’t play equally. My posts auto tweet when published, but I have been blogging for business and writing content for websites as a freelancer for a long time. I also did time as a social media marketer. If you are trying to increase pageviews, then social media is the way to go.

But like you said, your blog is your hobby. If that’s the case, no need for social media unless its just another outlet for communication.

About me pages suck. I ended up taking mine off the topic of ‘me’ and focused instead on why I started the foodie site. It helped quite a bit.

I know what you mean about getting behind in posts. I started a green smoothie challenge at the first of the month but fell off the posting wagon. I have some recipes I have yet to share and I havent posted any updates beyond week 1.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmm, I might take that direction on the About Me page…that would take a bit of pressure off! Thanks girlie! Yeah, and that is the MAIN reason I don’t commit to challenges or weekly linkups anymore…ugh, I swear I can barely get out of the house somedays with matching shoes on! One thing at a time! Ha!

  24. I read a great article by The Blog Maven over the weekend about not feeling like you have to stay in the blogging rat race and do ‘all the things’ you’ve read you need to do. Like always replying to comments, preparing posts in advance, linking everything to social media etc and it is so true. There is always so much that you could do when it comes to blogging but sometimes you need to step back and go hold on this is a hobby not my full-time job and you need time to actually just live your life, whatever you get done, you get done.

In saying that if you need any help on the Social Media front I am of course more than happy to help!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“…you need time to actually just live your life, whatever you get done, you get done.” <- You...are...so...RIGHT! Thank you so much, Jan! Ok, so I was just sitting here thinking that I REALLY needed to catch up with you so....yeah, one of the longest #broccolibombs EVER! Enjoy reading my novel of comments when you wake up! 😉

  25. What the HELL is Google+ and why do I get emails from people’s updates on it?!

  26. Caitlin says:

I have a WP plug-in for SEO and I totally cheat and use that to help tell me if my blog post is SEO friendly. But also if it isn’t, then I just leave it the way it is anyway, because I’d rather keep a title I like thankyouverymuch.
It took me about a year from deciding to update my About Me to actually ending up updating it. Le-oops.

  27. Google + What? yeah I don’t use mine either.

Also yeah I think someone else said it – but don’t let it overwhelm you! PS: if you ever need techy geek blog help, I’m your gal 😉

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Duly noted! Just don’t be upset if I bombard you with twenty emails one day! Haha!

I felt so accomplished today…I posted my granola bars AND my photography post on Google +! It probably did absolutely nothing, but whatevs, I’m riding this damn cloud! Ha!
