Alphabet Soup

A is For…

Apples!

Apparently, Honeycrisps are no longer my favorite…I know, I was shocked too! But after months of waiting for my local supermarket to start stocking them for the season, I FINALLY got my hands on some and was sadly disappointed with the too-sweet taste.

But now? NOW I have a new favorite! I picked up a few crisp varieties at the Dekalb farmer’s market over the weekend and conducted a little apple taste sampler if you will…

Ambrosia: waaaaaaaaay too sweet.

Braeburn: mildly sweet and tart.

Pinata: just a hint of sweet but much more tart!

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner folks!

B is For…

Breaking a sweat!

It seems three days off from the gym and a WHOLE lot of indulgent eating is all I needed to find some motivation. For weeks now I’ve been struggling through a plateau…feeling ho-hum about my workouts and really not getting much out of my time spent at the gym.

So far, I’ve hit the gym every day since Monday and have been surprised with the amount of energy/motivation I’ve had…and just because Friday’s survey reminded me that I don’t do ab work enough, today, I even busted out a power plank…

Yep, I’ve still got it! 😉

C is For…

Cholula…aka, my newest addiction.

I’ve never really been much for spicy stuff, but this hot sauce is perfect…mild with just enough spice to make your nose run if you accidentally get a little heavy-handed with the bottle…oops!

And it also makes for some great contrast in #yolkporn photos! 😉

Savory oats cooked in water, seasoned with nutritional yeast, fenugreek, and fresh ground pepper, topped with cilantro, a perrrrrrfectly fried egg and crack sauce!

D is For…

Different!

Another submission for the Weird Foodie Club: Canned tuna, persimmon, sunflower seed butter, and cinnamon.

And you know what I always say…don’t knock it till you try it!

E is For…

Eggs!

In an effort to clean out the fridge before heading to Atlanta for the weekend, I ended up polishing off the eggs early fairly quickly and was then forced to go almost SEVEN days without a single incredible edible…of course now that I’m back home and have replenished my supply, I can’t seem to get enough!

Besides my latest obsession with hot sauce, I’ve also been loving the mix of sweet and savory this week.

On the left, a toasted whole grain pita with mozzarella cheese, egg whites, topped with
peach pecan jam and on the right, another pita spread with strawberry butter and two hard-boiled eggs with freshly ground peppahhhhh!

F is For…

Fashion?

Saw this ad when I logged into Facebook the other day…

“Experience pure holiday joy with these sassy Christmas tree sweatshirts”

Bahaha! Maybe after a few cups of egg nog, right? 😉

G is For…

Giveaway!

  1. Love this idea! I’ve never tried a pinata apple – I’m intrigued!

  2. Seema says:

H is for heat 🙂 I’m so glad that my family and my office both turned up the heat! It’s officially more-than-chilly in Chicago as the snow flurries on my car in the morning attest to 🙂 It’s been far too long since I’ve commented on my FAVORITE foodie pen pal’s blog, hope you are doing great!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, Seema!! It’s so good to “hear” from you! I hope you are doing well! Good to know everyone came to their senses and you’re not freezing your tootsies off…but just NOW turning on the heat?! It’s the middle of November! As far as I’m concerned, ONE snow flurry is all I need to see before that switch gets the flip! 😉

      • Seema says:

Sorry for the late reply but I totally agree!! So glad to be warm and toasty now but if I was living my myself, the heat would have been turned on probably at the end of September 🙂

  3. purelytwins says:

pinata apple sounds like something we would like, our favorite is granny smith apples followed by Fuji 🙂

  4. Pinata is my absolute favorite too. I made pumpkin PB & Aggs this morning with mine. 🙂

I is for Igloo. Which is how it’s going to feel next week in Vail. 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know, I’m so glad you mentioned it at the market…SO much better than the Honeycrisp! I really like Mutsu apples too, but I can only seem to find them at my local farmer’s market…which is now closed for the year since my town isn’t super cool like Atlanta! Womp womp! 🙁

I hope you found room in that bag for extra socks…and mittens…and 15 hats! 😉

  5. Khushboo says:

Ohh thanks for reminding me that it’s been far too long since I’ve made savory oatmeal…especially after seeing your picture, that needs to change asap! Playing along with the Alphabet game, J is for Japanese food…more specifically sushi! If cravings are anything to go by, I foresee some salmon avocado makis in my near future :)!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It had been a while since I’d had savory oats too…so glad I decided to whip some up! I forget how much I love them…you just can’t beat the taste of a runny egg combined with noochy oats! 🙂

Funny you should mention sushi…I’m going out to one of my favorite Japanese places with some friends tonight! I’ve got my mouth set on anything that has eel sauce drizzled over it! YUM!

  6. I’ve been having the same problems with my workouts lately – they’ve just been so mediocre! So I’m taking a bit of a break from exercise too. A few days off can seriously work wonders on my energy levels and motivation!

K is for kurtosis, which refers to the peakedness/flatness of a distribution curve. It’s a term I just studied in my notes for my Research Methods exam on Saturday haha! 😛

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you for reminding me that I don’t miss being in school at all! Lol

I always worry about that taking a “break” from exercise…just because there seems to be a fine line for me between finding motivation and losing it…especially in the cold weather months! It’s so easy for me to just be like, “Oh it’s too cold, I’ll just stay home today”…then that turns into an entire WEEK! Haha

  7. Allie says:

L is for lemons…because I have a giant bag of them that need to be used before next Wednesday. Dear Costco: Quit convincingly to buy produce in bull. I’m just one gal, I simply can’t eat it all fast enough.

    • Allie says:

Wow, I can’t type. Make that: convincing me to buy lemons in bulk. I don’t want lemons from bulls. Although a bull-lemon would be completely worthy of inclusion in your next weird foodie package 😉

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Allie, how I love you! The fact that you left a second comment just to correct your grammar seriously had me giggling, but then you have to go and put an image of a bull-lemon in my head…which I see as a freakishly large, red-skinned fruit with horns…and a gold ring pierced through it’s skin! Lol

PS, I have the SAME problem when it comes to BULK produce…Sam’s Club gets me every time!

  8. I must try a Pinata apple! I love Mutzu’s. Have you had that one?
H is for HELP.. that is what I need right now. My exams are tomorrow and you can see where I’m spending my time….

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my gosh, those are actually tied with the pinatas as my favorite! I found them at my local farmer’s market and ended up going back and buying a TON! Just wish I could actually find them in the stores around here!

Now stop reading this and GO STUDY!! 😉 Good luck with your exams! xoxox

  9. Ahahah! First thing that came to mind when I saw those sweaters was that they’d be perfect for an ugly sweater party. I hope people don’t actually think those look good 😯 Let’s seeee… next letter is M. M is for mayonnaise… something I won’t touch with a 10 ft long pole. Ick.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know! I thought the SAME thing…actually, until I read the caption, I thought it was a funny ad FOR an ugly sweater party! Lol And the fact that it shows men wearing them makes it even more hilarious!

  10. LOVE. Hmmm… W is for WEEKEND full of N is for NUTTY BUTTER…I am F is for FREAKING OUT about making E is for ENOUGH. 😉

Gold Rush Apples. Hands down the best this season. Too bad the crop here is G is for GONE.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Gold Rush? Was that the apple you sent me for Foodie Pen Pals or was that a Mutsu? Mutsu’s are also my favorite, but I’ll be darned if I can’t find any of them around here…may have to go scout out the big farmer’s market in Nashville this weekend just for that!

Good luck with your nuts…er, I mean NUTTY BUTTER! Wish I could be there to help out…and of course lick the bowl of the food processor after each batch! 😀

  11. Piñata apple? Sounds like it’s an apple party! Sorry, I’m a total cheeseter mcgee today 😛 I’m a huge hot sauce fan and think TJ’s jalapeno sauce is fabulousss- spicy with a kick and it’s thick!

  12. Ooh I love the Cholula Chili Garlic sauce! I just realized that I don’t have any more, too… must make an emergency trip to the grocery store!! 😉

*** I’d really love it if you’d participate in my new blog link-up series Shopping List Friday! (See my blog for more details).

  13. I just recently got into Cholula too, and I’m hooked. It’s so good, and I’m also hooked on eggs. I really can’t get enough.

  14. If you ever get the chance, try Crimson Crisp apples. Oh. My. Lord. They are so crunchy and sweet, but tangy and tart at the same time. Oh, and they’re the most beautiful shade of red you’ll ever see.

    And S is for… Samples!!

This time of year means craft fairs, product demos and COSTCO! (Actually, Costco is all year round). In one day I went to three different places that had a plethora of free samples just waiting to be nibbled on. Please, TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE!

Also, I’m a big blog-fan of yours and I just started my very own blog. If you check it out, I would love to hear your thoughts! I’m very new this, so I’m no…you, but hopefully I’ll get into the swing of things eventually 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow, those apples sound amazing! I’ve never heard of them before, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout now! I’ve actually been out of apples for over a week now…I think I’m starting to have withdrawals! 😉

Yay for samples! Isn’t that the reason people go to warehouse stores anyway?? Lol Free food is the BEST!

Aww, and welcome to blogging! 😀 Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it…I didn’t find my groove till almost a year into it…oh how I wish I were kidding!

  15. I got this awesome hot sauce from a texas foodie pen pal in sept that I’ve been loving on eggs. So. Good.

I recently have been crazy about going to the farmer’s market and getting a whole bunch of heirloom apples. But then I can’t remember which is which – haha I need to tweak my process. I did get one last trip that was called banana apple that was good and baldwin was a good one too I remember.
I have been digging the macintosh and cortland types lately too.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

That’s the thing…there are just SO many different varieties! I don’t think I’ve ever even tried any of the ones you just mentioned! Haha! I went to the Nashville farmer’s market this past weekend and was excited about picking up some apples, but sadly, they didn’t have ANY organic ones! Sad day! 🙁
