A Marvelously Healing Weekend

Hello dolls!

I am LOVING the response to yesterday’s #strangebutgood pancakes…you guys really didn’t see that one coming did ya?

*insert evil laugh here* πŸ˜‰

So how was your weekend? Was it good? Was it great?

Was it MARVELOUS?!

Join Katie, me, and whole DIVA bunch as we start the week out right!

I gave myself a much needed break over the last few of days since it seems I’m starting to develop a penchant for turning bad weekends into good ones…

IMG_1206Don’t worry…I wasn’t in another car accident!

Nope, I started my weekend with an appointment with the orthopedic to go over the results from the MRI on my knee..which meant…

PantsIt was parachute paper pants time!

Can’t touch this! πŸ˜‰

Of course my sense of humor died right about there.

IMG_1566The doctor informed me that I have a torn lateral meniscus. I had two options at this point…schedule and arthroscope to evaluate the extent of the damage and “possibly” (no guarantees) repair the meniscus OR get an aspiration (where they drain the fluid off) along with a cortisone shot and take it from there.

The pain I was in was so frustrating…it had gotten worse the last few days before the appointment and I was SO tired of limping around so I decided to take the less invasive (and faster) approach and agreed to have the aspiration and cortisone.

And that my friends was the most excruciating pain I’ve felt in a LONG time! They numbed the skin before placing the needle, but as they started to drain the fluid, I swore they had stuck the needle THROUGH my knee cap and was sucking the bone out! They were able to get a significant volume out and then administered the shot (which only hurt HALF as much as the first part!), but it remained swollen, red, and painful the rest of the night.

After a fitful night’s sleep (yeah, remember that bout of insomnia I mentioned?), I woke up feeling only a little better, BUT luckily the man-friend new exactly what to do to cheer me up!

Croque Madame YolkpornYOLKPORN!!!!

We met up with some friends at J. Alexanders (first time for me) and I ordered the Croque Madame: Toasted French bread stacked high with shaved ham, Gruyere, and a PERFECTLY fried egg on top!

Omg, you guys…it was a cheesy, yolky HEAVEN!

Zombies & KombuchaAfter dinner, we headed to the theater to catch a movie we’ve been DYING (haha, get it?) to see, but not before stopping in Whole Foods and picking up a little something to help Heather digest all that glorious (yet heavy) cheese! πŸ˜‰

The movie was awesome…we were rolling the entire time…and the kombucha was perfect! First time trying this flavor and I LOVED it!

The next day, the man-friend came over bearing gifts…

Chimes Ginger & KombuchaSqueeeeeeeeeeeeeeel!

And contrary to how it appears, I do not have a stomach bug…

But I DO have a couple of new obsessions! πŸ˜‰

After falling in love with the mango ginger chews (and proceeding to demolish my bag in less than a week!), I was on a mission to find more and he just happened to spot these peanut butter ones at TJ Maxx the other day and KNEW I would flip for them!

After the I got over my giddiness, we had a quick lunch…

IMG_1630

Loaded veggie wrap with hummus and avocado for him.

IMG_1637

And fruity, chocolate-y masterpiece for her! πŸ˜€

Absolute HEAVEN! Stuffed with chocolate eggfruit pudding, crunchy coconut peanut butter, banana and cereal crumblies…it seriously had my eyes rolling into the back of my head with the first bite! Lol

After we were properly fueled, we rolled up our sleeves and got down to business…

Hey, get your mind out of the gutter πŸ˜‰

We had WORK to do!

Dresser

IKEA dresser building for him.

Christmas Tree TakedownAnd Christmas tree takedown for her!

In the box AND sealed…oh yeah, I totally dominated that evergreen! And that was WITH a bum leg! Oh and just for the record, I hammered TWO whole nails into the dresser! Ha, how’s that for contribution? πŸ˜‰

After all that, we managed to work up quite the appetite and were pretty tired…

SushiSushi to the rescue!

And then back to the casa for some more kombucha drinking and movie watchin’…

Netflix & Kombucha

The lavender was better (so glad I’ve got two more) and the movie was just…ok, but it was the company that mattered most! πŸ˜€

Yesterday I woke up and was surprised to find my knee feeling MUCH better! It’s still a little swollen and I still have to be careful with side-to-side movements, but it’s a VAST improvement from how I felt on Thursday!

Must’ve been the healing powers of the kombucha! πŸ˜‰

Kitty CuddlesOr the early morning kitty cuddles! <3

What was MARVELOUS about your weekend?

Have you ever tried kombucha? What’s your favorite flavor?

Oh no!!! I’m so sorry to hear about your poor knee. Thank goodness for your kick a$$ man friend. Seriously, he sounds like the sweetest person ever! πŸ™‚

  2. Lucie says:

Girl. I am at school right now and supposed to listen to the teacher i stead I am reading this post. Then I read this sentence: seriously had my eyes rolling into the back of my head with the first bite! – and laugh out loud. Everyone hates me now! πŸ™ but you know, I don’t care πŸ™‚ I am so sorry for your knee – but glad in them meantime that it’s getting better!!
These wraps….look soooo delicious!!! And I can’t get over that you only took te christmas tree down! πŸ™‚ happy monday love!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! Oops? πŸ˜‰ Just tell them they need to go out and find an eggfruit and they’ll understand COMPLETELY! I kid you not…total foodgasm! Lol

  3. Kendra says:

I am sorry to hear about your knee; that cortisone shot sounds like it was painful…But I am glad you enjoyed the movie–I definitely want to see it when it comes out on DVD! I absolutely LOVE GT’s Kombucha; some of my favorite flavors are the Gingerade, Strawberry Serenity, and Cosmic Cranberry. The chia seed varieties are delicious as well, but not my favorite. Kombucha definitely helps my digestive system, and never fails to give me an energy boost.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh I LOVE the ginger flavor (shocking, I know!) πŸ˜‰ I’ve never tried the GT’s version of the chia ones, but I tried the hibiscus flavor of the Mama Chia brand and thought it was good…definitely different!

  4. Ouch!!! I hope you get better soon!! The rest of your weekend sounds pretty great though:D

  5. katie says:

    Love you!!!

So much marvelous! I can not wait to have sushi again, I can have cooked but I love raw best!!

    <3

  6. I hope they let you keep those sexy shorts… πŸ˜‰

So glad you’re feeling better Kombucha is good for everything. I love the green and the citrus the best, but I’m really digging my home brews. I started adding basil and it is SO good.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

You know it! But don’t get too jealous, I’ll be sure to grab another pair when I go for my follow up…you know, since you look so good in blue! Don’t worry, you can pay me back in homebrewed kombucha! πŸ˜‰

  7. That’s a total bummer about the knee; I hope your fix does the trick.
I’ve only tried Kombucha once, and I couldn’t get over the god awful smell long enough to enjoy the taste. Sorry, it must be said.
By the way, I think your manfriend is just about perfect. He brings you treats, makes you breakfast, assembles your furniture and watches bad movies with you. Plus his mere presence seems to make your weekends better. Two thumbs up for this manfriend.
Last, yolk porn plus Gruyere cheese in one sandwich equals heaven. The veggie wrap looks pretty damn good too.

  8. Hannah M says:

Awww poor you πŸ™ I’ve had that procedure before, it hurt like a bitch and after I felt so faint and wobbly. Are you have physiotherapy? That was my next step, and following it religiously, a long with cutting the crap from my diet, was critical to my recovery.

And I’ve never tried kombucha, I always see it on blogs but I’ve never seen it in any uk shops!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Gahhh, I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one…I swear I kept telling myself that I should just suck it up, but seriously, omg worst pain ever! They don’t have me doing any PT right now, but I have been trying to swim a couple of times a week and I can manage the arc trainer pretty well. Just have to steer clear of the treadmills and the stair steppers!

  9. Calee says:

    BOOOOOOOOOO.

That’s what I’ve got to say about your knee. Sucktastic. I’m interested in seeing what you decide. They thought I’d done that as well, but my injury from falling on the ice has been healing, so I’m guessing it’s not that. However, my doc said her assistant had surgery to fix hers and it’s been about a year and she’s running again.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Did you sprain the ligaments? I know when I fell a few years ago and sprained my ankle, it was one of the LONGEST recoveries ever! It took 3 months of physical therapy before I could get back to normal activity.

I go back to the doc for a follow up in a couple of weeks but I’m hoping that since I’m starting to see relief from the cortisone shot that this will be the end of it.

      • Calee says:

Good Q. I’m going back to PT today. I’m not sure because it doesn’t really hurt like I sprained them, and since I’ve been lifting again most of the pain has gone away. I think I just dorked up my IT band again and the muscles that support it have gone away since I was incorrectly doing moves that used the glut med and used all the supporting muscles instead. The glut med keeps the IT band in check.

But yea, I sprained my ankle last fall too. It was a minor sprain, but it took me out for a couple of months. I was just getting back into the swing of things when I fell on the ice a couple weeks ago. Ironically, I was not running when I fell (I do run when it’s icy, and I do better running than walking). I was taking Barney out to pee.

However, next time you have a sprain or a ligament issue, look for somebody who does the Graston technique. I did traditional medicine for the first 6 weeks following my ankle sprain, lost a bunch of mobility, re-sprained it, and then did graston. I was running within a week with Graston.

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, I swear the worst of my “accidents” that have landed me in the doctor’s office, have always happened doing the most menial tasks…I threw my back out last summer getting a book out of by bookcase! o.O I know, I know, I’m 28 going on 82! Lol

Wow! I just Googled the Graston technique…the spread on Wikipedia looks like something Dexter would pull out of his bag! Haha!

  10. Aw no your poor knee!! I hope youre okay!
Other than that it looks like you had a great weekend – gotta love a bit of yolk porn ;).
Im so jealous of you just taking your christmas stuff down now too – i wish i could have kept mine up until February; im always so sad when it all has to be taken down boo hoo!!
I’ve never tried kombucha before; we don’t get it in the UK but I’m always seeing stuff about it, it looks nice!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! I even had the Christmas wreath still hanging on the door until last week when the UPS guy gave me a bit of a look! I told a friend the other day that I should have just decorated it for Valentine’s Day! Lol

  11. I’m so sorry about your knee! Although I admit I couldn’t read the whole thing because any medical talk completely freaks me out.

But the rest of your weekend sounded marvelous! Especially those wraps. And please tell me you took home some extra paper pants. πŸ˜‰ Haha!

  12. Sounds like this new man friend is a keeper! So sweet! πŸ˜‰

  13. I hope the next person I date knows to bring me kombucha when I’m not feeling my best. The ginger flavor, specificallyβ€”it’s so good, and I tell myself that all the anti-inflammatory effects of the ginger make it work the money!

  14. Oh no, I’m sorry about your torn meniscus, Heather. Way not to start the weekend :(. Hope it’ll feel better soon!

Looks like you and manfriend made up for it with fun and food, though. Keep that man for sure ;). Now mail me some of that eggfruit pudding and kombucha, huh?!

My weekend was made marvelous by a snowy walk with my mum and comfort food at its best. Sadly without kitty cuddles but you can’t have everything and I felt spoiled already :).

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks MP! And seriously? I would send EVERYONE an eggfruit if I could! These babies are pure magic! I’m down to my last one now and totally conflicted…eat or save, eat or save…ahhh, I want it to last forever!

  15. I had to have two cortisone shots in the ARCHES of my feet last year and it was probably one of the most (if not THE most) painful thing I’ve ever experienced… I feel for you!

  16. Dang you had quite the filled weekend! I’m really sorry about the knee. I’m hoping it gets better soon! xoxo

  17. I am definitely agreeing with Laura… I really hope they let you keep those shorts… As for Kombucha, I have not tried it! One of these days…

    Your banana-chocolately roll-up looks divine.

  18. Okay, so hearing you describe getting the fluid drained from your knee seriously gave me the heebie jeebies – like I visibly shuddered. I hope that it’s feeling better! And I couldn’t help but laugh that it’s the beginning of February and you JUST took your tree down – big fan of Christmas, I take it? πŸ˜‰ I myself am a big fan of kombucha… To be honest, most of the flavors taste pretty similar to me, but I do have a soft spot for grape.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! More like I’m a big fan of doing things OTHER than staying at home to take the tree down! This was the first weekend since new years that I was home and that was only because I had to be (on call at the hospital).

I’ve been wanting to try the grape flavor for a while now, but they always out! πŸ™

  19. Kim says:

OUCH! Ok I hope your knee heals and you don’t need anything else done. I myself have a bumb knee… cartiledge (sp?) is kinda going bye bye on my right knee. But anywhoo…. I am in love with that sushi platter… what kind was it? I might need to go get me some!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks Kim! Knee problems are no joke that’s for sure!

Oh lord, that sushi! It was seriously amazing! The platter had just about EVERYTHING…Shrimp, crabstick, fatty tuna, regular tuna, salmon, eel, whitefish, and yellowtail. I can’t remember what all was in the rolls but I do remember there was avocado, cucumber, crab, shrimp tempura, and some tuna in them! It’s funny, you’d think after all that AND going home with leftovers, that I’d be sushi-ed out but I’m actually craving some right now! Lol

  20. I’m sooo happy for you!
I am spoiled and I get my buch on tap from a bar around the corner. But when I buy GT I like the gingerade, lavendar, hibiscus, and gingerberry

  21. UGH on the knee – so sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It sucks to be injured in any way!! Hope you are better soon & it does not get worse!

OK – those “pants” at the doc office – too much! πŸ™‚

    Kitty is so cute!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you so much, Jody! And um, on my next visit, I’ll be sure to ask for an extra pair of pants. Just send me your address and they’re YOURS! πŸ˜‰ Lol

  22. I’m so sorry about your knee! I have had that done and it is NO JOKE. The pants make up for it though.. πŸ˜‰ Sounds to me like you have a keeper of a man friend girl!

  23. I’m so sorry about your knee – that needle sounds so painful! I know how you feel though – when I had a tree fall on my head when I was 14 (lol true story) and the wound got infected, the doctor opened up the wound without any anesthetic or painkillers!!!! I remember nearly passing out.

The rest of your weekend sounds awesome though. I’m convinced sushi cures anything. πŸ˜‰

My favourite flavour of kombucha is Third Eye Chai – have you ever tried that one?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my GOSH!! That’s insane!! How in the world did a tree fall on your head?! And yes, I knew you would definitely approve of our dinner selection for the evening! πŸ˜‰

I haven’t tried that flavor yet…actually someone else just mentioned it and that was the first I’d heard of it! I absolutely LOVE chai so I definitely have to find this one!

  24. Julie says:

My favorite is the trilogy! I’ve seen a new chai version – wonder how that is…

  25. BreNaturally says:

Yolk porn! LOL…that was funny and looked delicious. πŸ™‚ Hope the knee continues to feel better.

  26. I really want to try kombucha, but I’m caffiene intolerant. Do you know if it contains caffiene?

  27. betty says:

this mystery man just keeps getting better and better! i will never put a piece of ikea furniture together for anyone, EVER again πŸ™‚ i’m going on saturday so hopefully i dont get too carried away!

sorry about your knee πŸ™ i’ve had both my meniscu’s (menisci?) removed and some chipped cartilage from 18 years of catching in softball, so i feel your pain. good luck with all that, lady!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow! Removed?! Ouch! I can only imagine how that feels!

Hope you had fun at IKEA! Now that my dresser is all set up and pretty, I keep thinking of going back for more! Lol

  28. You def had a marvelous weekend- so many tasty eats and fun adventures! Sorry about your knee- I had a few cortisone injections into my shoulder in high school and I’ll always remember them… They were a huge PAIN! Hope you’re on the mend soon πŸ˜€

  29. Shannon says:

I have been obsessed with kombucha lately! (I’m not even exaggerating, I have gone through 10 bottles in one month!) Of course it was on sale, so I had to take advantage of that. The Synergy Enlightened trilogy is so good! It really makes you feel great when you drink it too. I’d choose kombucha over soda any day.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well, at least they were on sale, right? I used to be so addicted to them about a year ago, but when the only health food store in town closed, I just quit drinking them…I only really liked the gingerade flavor before, but now there are so many new ones to try! It’s been a while since I’ve had the trilogy, but the man-friend got me one in my bunch for Valentine’s Day so lucky me! πŸ˜€

Kombucha trumps soda, beer, wine, you name it!…well, except for coffee…I love my coffee (even if it IS decaf!) πŸ˜‰

  31. I really liked the Bilberrry, but have yet to try the Lavender, and now I want to, especially if you think it is better! I’m not sure I’ll ever quite get over Trilogy though. I keep going back to it. πŸ™‚

I’ve had those mango ginger chews in my pantry for AGES and haven’t opened them. I blame the fact that I am a compulsive Marshall’s food buyer and forget what I buy some times…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! When I cleaned out/organized my pantry the other day, I actually “found” some stuff I forgot I’d bought! Seriously…we’ve got problems girlie! Lol

You have GOT to try the Lavender! I am so picky when it comes to kombucha, but seriously, I think this one is the best yet!
