Strange But…STILL Strange!

It’s no secret…I’m a bit strange when it comes to food. And the MAIN reason for my strangeness?

SHEER CURIOSITY!

Whether it be random flavors I pick from the fridge or testing out a “famous” combo,
I just HAVE to know…

It may be strange, but is it GOOD???

A few weeks ago, the man-friend and I conducted an experiment…

Lay's Pack

Oh no she didn’t!

Lay's Chips

Oh yes…she DID! 😀

But can you blame me? The entire pack was only TWO DOLLARS!!

And I just HAD to know!

Sriracha Lay's

First up, the Sriracha…

They tasted kind of like ketchup, kind of like barbecue sauce, and well, like sriracha! I’m a total spice wimp (if I actually use sriracha on anything, it is like a tiiiiiiiiiny little drop on a plateful of food and even then, sometimes I get heartburn) so these were obviously pretty spicy to me.

They weren’t overkill, but let’s just say I wasn’t objecting when the man-friend said he was taking the other bag home with him! 😉

Cheesy Garlic Bread Lay's

Next, the Cheesy Garlic Bread…

Or maybe I should say,

Cheesy GARRRRRRRRRR…*hack*phlegm*hack*…LIC Bread?

Cheesy Garlic Bread Lay's Chips

Seriously, these were like pure garlic powder! After a couple more chips, the flavor sort of mellows out a bit so you can taste a bit of cheesy flavor, but neither of us were really fans.

Chicken & Waffle Lay'sAnd finally, the Chicken & Waffles…

Now I know most of you wouldn’t even CONSIDER trying this, but I basically grew up eating fried chicken dipped in honey and well, if you think about a certain pair of golden arches and their affinity for sour yet sweet sauces, then you can understand the pairing.

That being said, having both HAD chicken and waffles before, we were a little disappointed in these. I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but this is what I got from it…

It was buttery (and probably the greasiest freakin chip ever!), with a few savory flavors like garlic, rosemary, and maybe a little parsley and then there was a faint hint of maple.

Chicken & Waffles Lay's ChipsIt was strange, but good still strange.

So when it comes down to it, what flavor would I “vote” for?

Well, I can’t really go by taste, but if I were to judge them based on how well they matched up with the authentic flavors, I’d have to go with the sriracha!

And the man-friend says…

“Mmmmmm…oh yeah, yep…mmmmmm”

😉

Oh and can I just say, I NEVER could have conducted this experiment before giving up calorie counting…I would have had to break out the scale and the calculator so I knew exactly what size portion I was having! Gah, it feels SO good to be FREE!

If you could create any chip flavor, what would it be?
I call dibs on the Elvis Burger chip! 😀

Hmmmm……what about salty spinach ‘n eggyolk chips? Or….uh. Almond butter and honey. Well I don’t know if that would go with chips but I just loooove honey with almond butter 🙂
Oh and I am so proooooud that you didn’t weigh the freaking chips!! Happy Weekend!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ohhh, now you’ve got me thinking of egg drop soup with wontons! They should SO make that into a chip flavor! Ha, and you’ve just given me an idea of something to pack in your goodie box…not egg chips though! Lol

  2. Haha thanks for you review :)! I would love a sweet potato & cinnamon flavored chip…mmm now that would be good!

  3. Haha I actually don’t like potato chips much to begin with (but tortilla chips are my faaaaavorite!) so I don’t know if I’d like these. I’d totally try them though!

YAY for being able to try these things without having to count! you’re doing amazing, girl!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yeah, I’m not a big chip person either which is why I wasn’t really nuts about these. I used to LIVE for cheddar and sour cream Ruffles but nowadays, I’m with you on the tortilla chips! Have you ever had the Garden of Eatin’ Red Hot Blues corn tortilla chips? They are SOOOOOOO good!

  4. My favorite chip flavors are sour cream and cheddar, and sour cream and onion… SO basically the best chips in the world have already been created! 🙂

Great experiment. I hope you do more and I can learn more about all of these wonderful junk foods by living vicariously through you. Haha.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Seriously, cheddar and sour cream was my FAVORITE flavor chip when I was younger…now, I’m much more of a tortilla chip or cracker kinda gal!

Haha, I will gladly sacrifice myself to the occasional junk food just for you! 😉

  5. I’ve never had the chicken and waffles combo, but I’m oddly intrigued by that flavour.

My ideal chip: Dill-pickle flavoured tortilla chips (Doritos Dill-icious). I can’t call dibs on creating it because it was around all the time when I was in high school, but they need to bring it back because I have trouble finding it now.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Dude, really?! I’ve never seen or heard of those, but Doritos are seriously the shiz! I don’t think I’ve ever tried a flavor that I didn’t like. Have you had the new ones in the purple bag? I think they’re like sweet chili flavor or something…my dad had a bag at the house a few weeks ago and I tried a couple…pretty darn tasty!

  6. Ha! I’ve never had chicken n’ waffles, but I used to dip my chicken nuggets in honey. Yeah… McDonalds has honey, but you have to ask for it. In fact, the packets still look like they did when I was little. Hmmm… guess I’m the only one asking for it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Love it! I was totally addicted to the sweet and sour sauce so I never even entertained the idea of another dip! I swear I still crave that sauce sometimes! Lol

  7. Now I would have upped the food strange factor and mixed all three of them together! I’m all about trying new food/flavor combos and found some (most are epic fails) that stuck like sweet potatoes and PB and chili powder & cinnamon. Still haven’t given in to trying these chips, and by your review I think I can skip it : )

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ohhhh, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! And I’m like the queen of mixing flavors together! Haha! Have you ever tried chicken and PB/AB with chili powder? Delish!

  8. I’m actually jealous you tried these. I’ve only seen the giant bags and can’t bring myself to buy 3 of them. I bet the sriracha would be my favorite.

Dipping fried chicken in honey. I’ve been there. Except my mom amped it up by mixing the honey with mayo. Wtf was she thinking?! Lol!

    • lindsay says:

i found a little bag. I should probably try it. But i have no excuses, my husband will eat anything so if i don’t like it, he’d devour it. In New Zealand they have chicken flavored potato chips. Tastes like chicken noodle soup. Now that is freakin strange AND GOOD!

      • We had a co-work in from AUS last week and she was talking about Vegemite sandwiches. I thought of you. 😉

      • kissmybroccoli says:

That’s how the man-friend is too…there’s not much out there that he won’t eat…as long as it’s not a total Frankenfood! Haha! He’s spent some time overseas and was telling me about these Paprika flavored chips he tried once…said they were amazing!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! We used to make our own honey mustard when I was a kid…of course it was mostly mayo and honey with only a drop or two of actual mustard! Lol

You WOULD love the sriracha ones…but I thought you hated white potatoes? Ha, I knew it!!! You’ve officially been outed closet potato lover! 😉

  9. Maybe a Mexican fajita flavour?

Those flavours you had sounded so wrong!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

They WERE wrong! I like your idea much better! Mmm, bell peppers and onions…that would make a hell of a tortilla chip! Dipped in guac? YUM!

  10. Those are some strange flavored chips. Maybe they’d actually be good if you made them…you could use your maple infused oil, honey, and who knows what kind of chicken spice, but I know you could do it. I’d be happy to recreate the cheesy garlic bread. 😉 My favorite funktified chips are dill pickle flavored.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Dude! You ARE a genius! And now I need to get my hands on a potato! Lol

Omg, I had some dill pickle-flavored kettle corn at the farmer’s market this past weekend! It tasted so REAL!!

  11. Awwr! That sucks about the cheesy garlic bread – I would have thought that one would be a winner for sure, but enough garlic to kill vampires just by breathing on them? No bueno. Honestly, none of these really appeal to me. I’m a sucker for plain potato chips, but if I had to pick a flavored one, I’d be interested in seeing what a banana with chocolate/AB would taste like… I need another vehicle for my addiction 😆

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Love it! And now you have me wanting to dip dried banana chips in chocolate and almond butter! 😉

  12. Chicken and waffles?!? Who thought of that combo? So strange!!! I can imagine it would definitely be strange but . . . still strange. lol. Happy Friday!

  13. Kat says:

GARLIC FREAK over here, so Id be all over the garlic cheesy ones 🙂
And I kid you not one of my hubs favorite places to eat is called Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Can you guess what they serve?! Needless to say Ive only been once, and only got a waffle. Im not a fan of fried chicken, ESPECIALLY when its still on the bone!! yuck….

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, really? I love fried chicken legs! Just wish they loved me back…the tummy is never happy after more than one bite and who could stop at just one?! 🙁

  14. I remember hearing lots about these when they were released – didn’t they have Eva Longoria promoting them or something? I’m glad you did the taste test for us so…I don’t have to haha! At least now we know they’re not really worth bothering with!

  15. My husband wants to be your friend! (but not in any way other than he will befriend any woman who will taste test chips -that is his kinda woman!) Bummer about the garlic, I’d have thought that would have been the clear winner. Have a great Friday!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Love it! I’d be glad to be your hubby’s friend! He can help me on my next chip tasting adventure…hmm, possibly Doritos? 😉

PS, I was SO disappointed with the garlic ones…and I LOVE garlic!

  16. Tylers mom gave us a small bag of each to try and I thought they were all horrible, but then I’m not a big potato chip fan to begin with so that could have something to do with it.

  17. I really want to try the sriracha flavor!! Or, I just might have to attempt making my own at home! 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, definitely! I can’t see that it would be too hard! And it’d be a HECK of a lot less greasy! Lol

  18. kris says:

I haven’t had the opportunity to try any of them yet so I’m glad you tried em out for us! Plus your commentary is way better than mine 🙂 I wouldn’t mind a pb and jelly flavored chip.

  19. Haha I can’t believe these are actual chip flavours! I doubt we get them in Canada, but I’m kind of curious to try them…

I would love it if they made maple bacon flavoured chips! Or feta and sun dried tomato!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmmm, maple bacon! Omg!! And I actually have some hummus chips that I found at TJ Maxx that are feta and herb flavored! They are soooooo good!

  20. Emily says:

LOL! I’ve been wondering about these!
Being a vegetarian, I definitely wouldn’t try the Chicken & Waffles flavor (though I hiiiighly doubt there’s any real chicken in there…) but the other two are super intriguing. I may have to try the Sriracha flavor, just to say that I did!

  21. Jessie says:

Strangely.. I really enjoyed the chicken & waffles. To me they tasted like syrup, and well I kind of have an obsession for that stuff. I also think they would make the most delicious crusted chicken!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Now I DID actually think about doing that! Hmm, maybe I’ll have to try making my own rendition….chicken & waffles chicken! Lol

  22. Lee says:

I’m not a huge chip person, but I want to try these. I didn’t know they came in combo packs.

  23. My spouse brought home a bag of the chicken and waffle flavor chips that were being distributed on the base. You know, because our service members deserve fat, sugar and salt?? Right.

    They tasted . . . meh.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, exactly! So rare these days that you see good for you food being handed out…and THAT is what we need…to convince the health-food haters that good food CAN taste good!

Glad to know I’m not alone in my indifference. 🙂

  24. The only flavor that has had me wanting to try them is the chicken and waffles…good to know they aren’t worth it! My 10 year old tried the Sriacha at school and he loved them.

  25. I have been curious, too! [I’m also curious about these chicken flavored crackers I sometimes see at the dollar store…]

I am not a huge ‘typical’ chip person, generally preferring tortilla chips, pita chips, or rice chips, etc. BUT have enjoyed black pepper chips in the past, and I know that ketchup is delicious on chips…so I would create a black pepper, dill PICKLE, ketchup chip. 🙂 Condiment chip? Get some mustard in there too?

    Hmmm…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, the chicken in a biskit ones?!!? Ahhh, blast from the frickin’ past! We used to eat those ALL the time when I was a kid…with cheeze whiz…because I grew up all healthy and stuff! 😉

I’m with ya on the chip preferences…normally, regular chips are just too greasy for me! And heck yeah, like a CHEESEBURGER CHIP!! haha, I love you!
