A Lesson in Jargon[E]

Empty

Haha, get it? ๐Ÿ˜†

If you’re a regular reader of food blogs, then there’s no doubt you’ve heard of the term, OIAJ (oats in a jar)…meaning breakfast served out of near empty-nut butter jar. If you’ve never done it…you REALLY don’t know what you’re missing! I remember when I first learned of it nearly three years ago when I started blogging…you know, back in the day when all I knew existed was plain ol’ peanut butter!ย To say this concept completely changed my life may be a bit of an understatement as I think anyone who has ever lusted after a jar at SOMEONE ELSE’S house, can totally agree. I mean, remember this pic?

Wall of Nut Butter

Taken less than two months ago, all those jars but one* are GONE…plus two more I confiscated borrowed from the man-friend’s house! ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

*As surprising as this may sound, especially given our prior engagement, Cacao Bliss and I are not really meshing at the moment…but I do have plans to remedy that.

Yep, after all my fruitFULL yogurt bowls, stacked up sandwiches, and fig-scapades, I was left with ELEVENย near-empty jars!ย So what exactly did I do with all thoseย vessels for breakfast deliciousness?ย Well, allow me to break it down for ya…

Cashew Butter Oats in a Jar (OIAJ)

Topped with fresh pear and raspberries

*Not to be confused with this Mystery…I just forgot what I put in there! Although I’m pretty sure it’s not oats at all! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Was anyone else completely addicted to The Pickup Artist on VH1 years ago?

Proof that there were actual oats under all that melty yogurt! ๐Ÿ˜€

Bottomed with puffed millet and topped with Quest bar crumblies

Quest Cravings Crumblies

I’m sorry, can I just take a minute to tell you how disappointed that I am that Quest never actually launched these…I mean, the bar itself was a b!tch to try to eat, but it made the perfect topping for everything!

Almond Butter Waffle in a Jar (WIAJ)

Peanut Butter Cottage Cheese in a Jar (CCIAJ)KSIAJ: Kitchen Sink in a Jar
Seriously, I can’t even remember what all was in this bad boy under the persimmon goo, banana, and Meghan’s cranberry granola…all I know was that I didn’t want it to end!

And then there were the dark knights nights of brinner and early morning eats that found the opportunity for greatness in a jar, but alas escaped the papa papa-razzi! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nut Butter Jars

For the record, jars with edges should be banned from the world…or they should tiny little rubber spatula spoons…or a robot to just feed me the food inside the jar!

But wait a minute, what’s that guy doing back in the back?

Please, allow me to explain….I’ve always liked Biscoff/Speculoos Spread/Cookie Butter, but recently it’s gotten a bit sweet for my wimpy little taste buds. As one who seriously gets anxiety over throwing food away, I came up with a solution…

The salted peanuts balance out the sweetness of the cookie butter perfectly!

And the coconut oil makes it good enough to bathe in drizzle on just about anything!

And this is just the START to all the nut butter plans I have…first cookie butter, then…the WORRRRRRLD! Muhahaha! Oh uh, sorry there. I guess I’ve still got a bit of the Halloween spirit in me! ๐Ÿ˜‰

What would your dream nut butter flavor be?

Nut butter porn, much??? If I didn’t have an empty Skippy jar waiting to be used up, I’d be hating you right now out of envy! I was going to go with my standard OIAJ but you’re making me think otherwise…so many good ideas, especially waffle in a jar! As for my dream nut butter flavor, you nailed it with the peanut butter cookie butter…althoughhhh a little chocolate added in wouldn’t hurt ;)!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! I actually thought about adding cocoa powder to it! Great minds! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have you seen the cocoa swirl cookie butter?!

  2. The lazy food-lover in me loves to hate OIAJ. They are a pain to eat! I just want it in my belly NOW.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I actually like that it makes me eat them a little slower…especially for savoring those last few bites! And a long-handled spoon is the KEY! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. My favourite nut butters usually include chocolate in some form – although I’m sure that’s not surprising at all. You don’t like the Cocoa Bliss?! Feel free to send it this way ๐Ÿ˜‰ I picked up a sample pack in Minneapolis and oh goodness – obsessed. I kept it cold so I could break it up into little chunks – so good.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know…it actually sounds a little crazy for me to say this, especially since I have like NO sweet tooth, but it just doesn’t seem sweet enough?

  4. Cashew butter is my all time favorite. I haven’t made it in forever! My blades on my food processor are not what they used to be so I haven’t made any nut butters in a while. I need to replace the dang blade and get back at it since homemade is the best in my opinion!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

AMEN! It had been SO long since I’d made any from scratch…this batch was a definitely good reminder! I’m on a kick now for sure!

  5. Love the idea of combining cookie butter with PBโ€”less sweet and a little higher in protein sounds like a win-win to me. Also, I can’t wait to try the waffle-in-a-jar idea. Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. How you managed to make cookie butter better is beyond me! But seriously where do you come up with these things? I’d like to spend a day in your brain. I feel like it would be a fun place to hang out.

  7. Not fair to post this just when I have a hangry day … Or maybe just bad timing on my side for reading it now ;)?!
Anyway, dream nut butter flavour [warning: random]: Cashew macadamia nut with chopped salted pistachios with chocolate coconut peanut butter with a dash of sea salt swirled through. See, I told you I was ravenous and craving just about everything today. Okay, so how do I get a company to bring this creation to the market???
    Happy Friday!
… and you know I’m a fan of the title!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Whoa! That IS random! You might just have this macadamia nut hater over here willing to try something like that! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Confession: I deliberated for a couple of days over this post title and then it came to me during one of my walks…I LITERALLY jumped up and clapped my hands together! Haha!

  8. That’s a lot of goodness in jars! I loved oiaj but usually I just finish the jar of but butter with a spoon and end up topping my oats with but butter from a new jar. Nut butter is one of the few things I always have way more than enough of. Like usually 3-4 jars :). Costco sized jars!

  9. I’m overwhelmed by jar of goodness. Pass me one of each. And second of the cookie butter thingy. I felt the same way with the Biscoff spread and started using it to make granola. Speaking of, you should make granola with your spread and give me some. In 2 weeks. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. I have no words right now, except that I’m totally drooling over your latest creation! DEEFREAKINGLICIOUS!

  11. This makes me so sad I’m out of peanut butter!!! Must get more now!!!

  12. Can you believe that I have never tried OOIAJ?? I LOVE overnight oats and nut butters, too, so obviously I am pretty sure I would fall in love with OOIAJ. I will definitely be partaking in some of those as soon as I get an almost empty jar!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow! Yeah, you need to remedy that ASAP! Overnight OIAJ are the best since the nut butter doesn’t melt and get “lost” in the mix!

  13. Although I am not a fan of the oats in a jar concept (maybe because its battle to dig in and a pain to eat lol!) These creations…..you really are the breakfast Queen, and deserve to be knighted. or Lady’d. Or whatever the eff the queen does.

    Cookie butter twist- love it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

The trick is to use a LONG handled spoon so that you can really get in DEEP! Lady’d…is it just me or does that sound a little dirty! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Regardless, it sounds like fun and the queen approves! ๐Ÿ˜€ Lol

  14. chocolate hazelnut!!!!!!!!!!! i know it already exists but yes that is mine!

  15. OH MY GODDDDD I wish I had this type of collection. That one in the vanilla expresso…oh my I want soooooo right now. Can’t even think!

  16. Killing me with all of the nut butter & oat love… both of which are not currently part of my Whole 30 Program. Darn. It. They seriously all look amazingly delicious! You’re so creative! Love it! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Karey! I didn’t realize ou were doing the Whole 30…good luck with that! I could never go that long without bread! Haha!

  17. I’m not going to lie, I don’t love OIAJ. I know, I feel like such a bad HLB. But I just find it too hard to eat and I can never fit everything in the jar!

My dream nut butter flavour would be maple almond. I’m pretty sure Maranatha makes one, but I can’t seem to find it here! ๐Ÿ˜›

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Justin’s has a maple almond butter too! You should try scouting it out the next time you’re in the states…it’s amazing! ๐Ÿ˜€

  19. Robyn :) says:

    Where do you get Ovamaltine????????

I will be forever grateful to you for introducing me to Biscoff Spread. It is hard to find it around here, but there is a healthfood store about an hour away that has it!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, haha! Definitely worth the drive, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

A friend of mine from Switzerland sent me the Ovamaltine. I’ve seen that you can get it on Amazon, but it’s a little pricey…which might be a good thing since I swear it has crack in it! Lol

  20. I never know whether it’s reason to cry or celebrate when I get to the end of a nut butter jar. It’s just such a bitter sweet moment! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  21. I so want to buy all of these things!! Especially the cookie butter, we have such a limited range in Australia we have nothing like the ones you guys have there. They only have almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter (you’d hope so) and sunflower butter…we really need to up our game on adding more flavoured ones.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Have you ever tried making your own? Can’t say I have any idea of how to make cookie butter (which is probably a GOOD thing since it’s damn near crackilious) but it’s really easy to throw stuff together in the food processor and come up with flavors of your own…especially if you add a little coconut oil in there! It makes it the perfect consistency! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • That would actually mean having a ‘grown-up’ food processor ๐Ÿ˜‰ I only have a baby stick blender and the last time I tried to blend dates in the same model of it I broke it.

I’ve somehow got to convince Nick to buy me a Thermomix or Vitamix for Christmas ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. So since I’m reading these all at once, I noticed you called yourself a genius multiple times this week. I must say it’s well deserved. Peanut Butter Cookie Butter!!! Um, it has butter twice in the name, so you know I’m sold. I loved the shot of the nut butters who managed to escape the paparazzi. You had me giggling like a school girl.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh you know me, so so modest! ๐Ÿ˜‰ And the thought of you giggling like a school girl just made my night…er, morning…whatever!

  23. I think I latched onto the same thing as everyone else probably did… Waffle in a jar? I have seen mini pancakes layered into a jar like that before, but never waffle pieces.

I always try to decide which food photo is my favorite and comment on that one but you make it incredibly hard Heather. The kitchen sink jar is incredibly tempting with Meghan’s granola and that gooey goodness.
