Music Monday: Spilling It!

You GUYS!

Seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY?!

I love you…each and every single one of you! I just finished reading through the comments on last week’s posts and wow, just…WOW! You all really know how to brighten a lady’s day! Thank you all SO much for the compliments on my photography, the hurrahs on my latest goal accomplishment, AND of course all the praise for pumpkin-ified goodness out there! After a weekend I would NEVER want to relive, I really REALLY needed that! *hugs*

Ok, with a brighter spirit in the air, let’s get onto today’s post!

I’ve been tossing around the idea of a music-themed post for a couple of weeks now so when I saw the latest topic for Arman’s Spill It Sunday link up, I took it as a sign! I LOVE discovering new artists and music genres and sharing music tastes with people I meet! I have Amanda and Sam to think for my love of Pentatonix and just the other day, a coworker introduced me to Kangaroo Court by Capital Cities!

So how about I share a shameless selfie of me this summer jamming out in the car and then answer a few questions, huh? 😉

Selfie

What is your ALL TIME favorite musical artist/band?

My tastes seem to change with the seasons, but one thing that has remained constant since I was twelve years old is my love for Green Day.*

*Each link will coordinate to one of my favorite songs by that artist/genre.

What is your favourite genre of music?

REALLY hard to narrow it down, but at the TOP of the list are: Alternative, Rock, Alternative Rock, Indie RockSinger/Songwriter, and 80’s…always 80’s Bon Jovi!

Which genre of music could you skip over on the radio?

Country…sorry, but unless it’s some old school Reba or Garth, it just ain’t happenin’! I’m not that big into rap either…again, unless we’re talking some old school…can never say no to Salt ‘n Peppa or Marky Mark!

Most embarrassing musical admissions/tastes?

I’ll admit that while I feel my taste in music is a bit more refined now than when I was in high school, I do succumb to some of the candy-sweet, poppy, just has that damn beat that you can’t get out of your damn head songs. My latest and greatest lowest? Come and Get It by Salena Gomez…and yes, I hit repeat! 😯

And now, in no particular order, here are five songs that I’ve been cranking up on the radio and Pandora lately…

Love Don’t Die by The Fray…seriously, I’ve loved these guys since I had How to Save a Life repeating on my Myspace page!

Say Something by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera

Until the End by Breaking Benjamin

Tear Away by Drowning Pool

Living Dead Girl by Rob Zombie

Hey, like I said I had a shit-tastic weekend…and the only cure for that was nonstop Korn Radio…and some pretty sweaty gym sessions! 😡

What is your favorite music genre?

Favorite artist of ALL time?

  1. ALL time favorite artist?! That’s not an easy question, my friend….BUT Goo Goo Dolls will always have a place in my heart so I guess we’ll go with them. Though I could easily add to that list… 😉

    • kissmybroccoli says:

YES!! I was just telling Melissa (Treats with a Twist) how much I’ve loved them since I first saw City of Angels! 🙂

  2. Pentatonix is inSANE… I’m pretty sure they’ve never come out with anything that I don’t like. And Bon Jovi? Ob.sessed. I’m pretty sure that I’m going to have Livin’ On A Prayer stuck in my head all day now, but I can’t complain — SO many good memories of belting out the lyrics to that song in the most random of places…

  3. Kat says:

Well, I’m a home grown redneck (even though I’m from LA, my daddy lives in the boondocks!) so country is where it’s at for me. HOWEVER, I have by far the most eclectic taste in music. Linkin Park is my go to work out jam, although I do love Breaking Benjamin (that guy’s voice makes me swoon). So I’m all for the pop and rock stuff when I’m working out or in need of a good booty shake, but music to me is all about the lyrics, so I love alternative stuff like Gavin Degraw, John Mayer and Augustana and Passenger. Oh and Ed Sheeran owns my heart…although that could be a ginger thing…

  4. Ahhh Breaking Benjamin, Drowning Pool and Rob Zombie!! I knew I liked you 😉 Sorry to hear that you had a lousy weekend love – I hope today’s going better for you!

  5. Eric says:

Alternative, Classic rock, Hip-hop, Pop..it’s all good! I agree on the country..I only tolerate it in a social setting with poppy country (not the old sappy stuff!)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ha! Well, you know what they say…if you play a country record backwards, he gets his wife back, the dog back, the house back… Lol!

  6. Yesssss another The Fray fan! Arman said on my post yesterday how they are really underrated. I have been a fan since the beginning, they were my first “real concert” without my mom. My first “first” concert was Jesse McCartney… lol. Selena Gomez’s song is a jam. Don’t feel bad, it’s a good one.

  7. First of all, waking up to your comment bombing was the best thing ever. And THANK YOU for pointing out my spelling. How did no one else notice that??

I could never choose a favourite artist but I love indie dance and pop. Anything I can shake my booty to that isn’t made for teenage girls. Then again I do I have a weakness for Miley Cyrus on occasion…yes I just admitted that!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! That’s alright, I think I love you enough to overlook this small lapse of judgement! And because I’m totally guilty of having a couple of her old songs in my iPod right now! 😯

So glad you liked your little b. bomb! It was HIGH time I caught up with you…felt like it’d been years! Haha!

  8. Chrystal M. says:

Living Dead Girl is one of my all-time favorite songs!

Sorry about the crap weekend 🙁 Boo.

But yah for rocking gym sessions! 🙂

Let’s see, I’m an 80/90s girl. So hair bands were all the big rage when I was a teen. I still listen to Poison and have seen Bret Michaels on tour. My school girl crush will likely never fade.

As for my current favorite band, without a doubt Shinedown. It has been an amazing experience to watch them grow their fan base these last few years. When I first found them with their first album release and some EP, no one knew who they were and they had zero radio time. Pantera is a band I loved when I was younger and I happened to hear about them touring together. I just adore Brent Smiths vocals. He’s got that old school southern Skynard sound. I know you can’t tell by my photo here, but my entire chest is a tattoo based on bits and pieces of their songs. I went through some really awful things in life and when I reached another rock bottom, following these guys around the state of MI for a few years really helped changed my life. 🙂

I am moving some of my older blogs into a new one so the original post is in limbo right now, but you can see a pic and the story within the tattoo here, if interested:

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh WOW!! The tattoo is gorgeous, Chrystal! I love how the power of music is able to help us through hard times in life. I have a lot of artists I can thank for helping me through my divorce. Shinedown is another of my favorites too. I swear, there were just TOO many to fit into one post! And now I’m going to have to check out Pantera…you totally sold me on the “old school southern Skynard sound”…ah, love it!

  9. Purelytwins says:

all great songs!! favorite artist that is tough we like so many as we like such variety in music

  10. I had no idea we had similar taste in music! I loved all of these – Dookie was a staple. And oh lord… MySpace music… it was a great era. I SWEAR I was on there before it was “cool,” when it was more for bands. 🙂

We should go to a show when you come visit again! (Hint, hint…)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

TOTALLY!! Annnnnnnnd? I’m thinking that will need to be sooner than later…I could really use a getaway. And I owe you an email/text/something with a bit of explanation for that.

  11. I’m sorry to hear about your crappy weekend, I hope everything is okay! After reading spill it Sundays this week it does appear that I’m one of the rare ones who likes country.

  12. I actually listen to a crazily wide range of music – but I think that’s because I’m a singer. I love current music on the radio, but I also love reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaally old stuff (I’m talking Buddy Holly old), I love pop – but I also love jazz and swing and blues. Jesse always laughs because my Spotify account has the craziest mix up of music.

  13. I saw Green Day in concert when I was just a young little thing. I even crowd rode at their show; google that shit.

I’m excited to do the musical link up because my tastes are all over the board, except for country. Much like you, I could really just leave it, although I do fancy me some Outcast. In fact if I remember correctly, you’re a fan of Peaches and Cream. *drops mic

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! “I need it cause you know that I’m a fiend!” Ok, you got me! 😉 And I will also admit to going through a bit of a Ludacris phase when I was in high school and yes, Outcast was definitely part of the soundtrack to my freshman year in college “shake it shake shake it!” Lol! Now I must also confess that I am in awe of you right now! Crowd riding at a Green Day concert?!! You ARE my hero! …and I mean that in the FURTHEST from Enrique Iglesias way as possible! 😉

  14. omg omg omg omg this post couldn’t have come to me at a better time! i feel as thought it was just for me by the way 😉 yup. all mine.

i have been listening to lorde over and over again for the past ummmm three or four months now and just the other day i was like holy man i need a new cd! i still love her and all but wow i need some new songs so cannot even begin to thank you enough for this post! i always love getting new tunes! what a fun post to read! love u

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, I’m so glad you liked it, sweetie! I’m actually thinking of maybe doing more posts in the future on music so I can share a few more of my favorites. We’ll see! 🙂

  15. Dana says:

I am obsessed with Love Don’t Die and Say Something!!! But gosh can’t support the Selena Love (I saw her live with my niece and she was so terrible- truly a very weak singer!) But we share a love of Green Day! I know all of their lyrics and can air guitar their melodies like a pro 🙂 Favourite band of all time? Think I will go for top three U2, Mumford and sons and Queen 🙂 Love you my favourite Red Head Beauty.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh I know! That’s why I hate myself for liking that song! I know she’s not any good! #facepalm #pleaseforgiveme? 😉

  16. Lyric says:

This post couldn’t have come at a more perfect time because I am having a mid-life music crisis. Do I like Country? Pop? Alternative? Soft Rock? Yes no; ok I choose all of the above. However even though I don’t know my favourite Genre I do know my favourite artist and that is Taylor Swift. Cliche I know but I have been listening to her music since it first came out when I was in elementary school and I have every single one of her albums…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, hopefully we can pull you out of this crisis soon! I was actually thinking of maybe doing more posts like this so I could share more of my favorite artists/songs. There are just too many to fit into ONE post! And maybe…just MAYBE…I can introduce you to something you fall in love with so that I can find it in my heart to forgive you for the T. Swift thing! 😉

  17. Sarah Pie says:

Love Rob Zombie and Breaking Benjamin! And a little bubble gum pop is good for the booty shaking 😉

  18. We like a lot of the same genres! I love alternative, alternative rock, indie, and singer songwriters too. It’s way too hard to choose my favourite artists of all time, but Death Cab for Cutie, Elliott Smith, and John Mayer are all favourites of mine.

That song by Selena Gomez is so addicting! Not gonna lie, I always crank it and sing along to it in the car. 😉

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ahhhh! LOVE Death Cab! I’ve been hooked on Ben Gibbard’s voice since I first heard Soul Meets Body! 🙂

And THANK YOU for making me feel better about the Selena Gomez confession! Ha!

  19. Greenday will always hold a place in my heart. It’s the rebellion that gets me. 😉
You have some great tunes here. I too am a repeat offender. 😀

BTW, I love your selfie! So glamorous. 😉

  20. Julie says:

I don’t like country or rap either but some old school songs are the best. I can actually distinguish the difference.

  21. I will pretty much listen to ANYTHING. My favorite genre is “things I know the words to, and can therefore sing.” Does that count?

  22. I love my 90s alternative and boy bands, of course. I’m a huge singer/songwriter girl (remember, unbrushed hair and red lipstick). I love me some country but I’m picky about it. Say the word “honkeytonk” or “badonkadonk” once and you’re GONE. I love alternative, some days I pull out my pop-rap side (but not the hard-core stuff bc that’s too scary)…and the pop-rock of course.
My favorite band has always been the Goo Goo Dolls. Don’t laugh. They were my first CD, my first concert that I went to ALONE (all other concerts I’d been to with my mom) when I was trying to find myself…and I went to that concert the night I met my now husband. Aweeeee

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ok, so I literally just “awwww’d” at this!! And seriously? WHY would I laugh? I LOVE the Goo Goo Dolls! What was that movie with Meg Ryan? The angel one? Oh yeah CITY of Angels (totally had to Google that!)…totally got me addicted to them! I used to belt that shit out at the top of my lungs! “And I DON’T want the world to see MEEEEEEEEE…’cause I don’t think that they’d undastand!!” 😆

But I AM laughing at the honkeytonk badonkadonk…because you just reminded me that that was “my jam” right after it came out! Ha!

  23. What a loaded question!!! Music has always been such a big part of my life and I don’t think I could pick ONE.

But I’m with you, I have a special little green day place in my heart. Oh that shit takes me back to some 7th grade. Not to mention I’m pretty sure for 10 years everyones senior song was “time of your life”. 😉

Cute photo. I’ve been known to get looks rocking out – back in the day by myself…. now it’s looks because I’m rocking out in my mini van. Take that suckas!

  24. I love Christina Aguilera and Rob Zombie too! No, no it’s not THE weirdest combination out there…just close. 😉

I have definitely been guilty of listening to a little too much top 40 while running…somehow, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have both become my jam. Whatever works! 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“No it’s not THE weirdest combination out there…just close.” <- Hahaha! Love it! And yeah, I tend to go through phases where all I want to listen to is fun poppy stuff when I'm in the gym...there's just something about that beat that puts a little more spring in my step! 🙂

  25. Calee says:

we have very similar music tastes! all the hard rock you posted is stuff i would have listened to in college. i was very “hardcore”. then I got snobby about my metal genres and only listen to death and thrash now. LOVE this post.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ha! I think the hardest “core” I’ve gotten (ohh, that sounds dirty, doesn’t it?) was my System of a Down phase in high school. I’m still shocked my parents never tried to throw my stereo out the back door! Haha!

  27. We’d be epic car ride buddies…..we can skip over the country and then reminisce about having the SAME MYPSACE SONG.

Also the greenday…love it. Their American Idiot tour is by far my favourite concert I’ve ever been to. Ever.
