Spilling My Macros

What up!? Happy Sunday, weekenders!

So, I’ve been a very bad blend as of late and have gotten uber SUPER (sorry, the previous word makes me shudder to say but for some reason I type it anyway…ha, I rhymed!) behind in blog reading…particularly with my brother from another mother! Since I got all caught up with him the other night, I thought it was high time I jumped back in on his Spill It Sundays linkup…I can’t believe it’s been TWO MONTHS since my last one!

Since the first of the month, the themes have revolved around macros (fat and protein in the last two weeks and carbs for today) where we can share our favorites and some thoughts about them. Today I’m here to tackle them ALL, but I’ll condense it a bit so this post isn’t uber SUPER long! πŸ˜‰

FAT

1. What is your favorite fat source?

Food Truck Festival Grilled Cheese

Everyone say CHEEEEEEEESE!!! Seriously, it’s rare that I go a day without it…from gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches to my current favorite dinner of cheese, crackers, and carrots…I’ll take it any whey way I can get it! Oh and for the record, almost ALL that cheese that I brought home from ATLΒ last month is now GONE! 😯

2. What is your favorite nut? Nut butter?

Peanut Butter Luv

As a southern gal, my favorite nut has always been pecans…especially the German roasted (sugary/buttery goodness) ones that they have at the mall…yet I HATE pecan pie! Yeah, figure that one out! As far as nut butter though, it’s hands down, peanut butter! It’s weird, sometimes I can go for days without having or even thinking about it, but it’s just one of those things I don’t think I could ever live without! And yeah, I still think I’m crazy that time I gave it up for Lent!

3. Favorite recipe embracing fat:

Loaded Baked Potato Salad

It’s seriously too hard to pick my favorite, but my family’s long-time favorite recipe of mine is my Loaded Baked Potato Salad which showcases two of my favorites, cheese and bacon! Or should I say BACON and cheese? πŸ˜‰

Thoughts:

I’ve always leaned toward the fataphobic side of life. I remember years ago when I LIVED off 100 calorie packs, reduced fat/fat-free cheese, and air. Then, when I finally started to embrace the fat again, I started calorie counting and well…the higher the fat the higher the calories soooo I just convinced myself that I didn’t need it. I still have a few internal battles here and there, especially when it comes to incorporating more than one fat in a meal, but I’m getting there. Also, since starting intuitive eating, I’ve noticed that animal fats give me a higher level of satiety compared to plant-based ones.

PROTEIN

1. What is your favorite protein source?

Peanut Flour & Cereal with Banana

For the record, I like meat (that’s what she said), but if it came down to choosing between a steak and a bowl of cereal covered in peanut flour? Well, nine times out of ten, I’d say pass me a spoon! I rarely go more than a couple of days without it and actually, it’s about time I stocked up on some more. Oh, look at that, another reason to whore out my coupon code! πŸ˜›

BBQ Sweet Potato & Eggs

Just please GOD, don’t make me choose between peanut flour and eggs!

2. What is your favorite meat?

Pulled Pork BBQ

Alright! NOW we’re talking! πŸ˜‰ Again, gonna pull my southern girl card and confess that I have a hard time passing up some good, juicy, slow cooked pulled pork!

3. Favorite protein-rich recipe:

Peanut Butter Mug Cake

Ohhh, with all my protein pancakes, that is definitely a hard one, but if asked which recipe I’ve made the most, I’d have to say my Peanut Butter Mug Cake…which showcases not only “my precious” peanut flour but also eggs!

Thoughts:

Hello, my name is Heather and I’m a recovering protein powder whore. πŸ˜‰ I love adding protein powder to recipes to help with staying power, but I’ll confess that in the height of my calorie counting, I took it a bit far.Β I’m sorry, but a bowl of casein just isn’t the same as a bowl of ICE CREAM…not matter how much you try to convince yourself it is!

CARBOHYDRATES

Β 1. What is your favorite carbohydrate rich food?

Aponte's Pizza Tomato & Broccoli

And also my all around favorite FOOD! Gimme that THICK and crispy crust!

2. What is your favorite fruit?

Persimmon

I’m also in LOVE with fresh figs, but since we’re in persimmon season and I just had a fantastically juicy one today, we’re going with my OTHER favorite!

3. What is your favorite grain?

The Greek Sandwich

All you people and your crazy love for pasta! Bread is where it’s AT! Preferably in sandwich form, but I will also take toast, French toast, baguette, dinner rolls, pretzel buns, ciabatta, Italian…oh just give me ALL THE BREAD!!!

4. What is your favorite starchy vegetable?

Kabocha Squash

Kabocha…always kabocha…especially when it’s the size of a small child. Would someone please tell me HOW I lived nearly 26 years without it?!

5. Favorite carbohydrate-embracing recipe:

Coconut & Fig Stuffed French Toast with Coconut Peanut Butter from www.kissmybroccoliblog.com

Seriously, could it get any better? Bread, coconut, figs, AND peanut butter?! I think my Fig & Coconut Stuffed French Toast takes the cake here!

Thoughts:

Though I have a long history of disordered thoughts when it comes to macros, one thing I CAN say is that I’ve never been afraid of carbs. I think the only “rule” I used to have was no more than ONE banana per day (what?!), but I never overly scrutinized sugar grams when I was calorie counting because I knew most of them were from natural sources and that just seemed ok to me…even though I thought natural FAT sources were the devil…I know, I’m rolling my eyes as I type this!

What is your favorite fat source? Protein? Carb?

Do you see a difference in your satiety with animal vs plant-based fat?

  1. Love it. Epic condensation going on here.

I NEED to try out that peanut flour topping in cereal- I remember asking you about it last time, buying peanut flour and then forgetting. Not anymore. I also remember first stumbling across your blog being besotted by sandwiches…then pancakes…then weird veggie enhanced smoothies (and an ode to beets)…Ahh I wonder what will be NEXT?!

I will actually address the satiety thing in my challenge recap but YES. YES YES YES.

PS I’ve just finished the stupid carnival squash. Worst ever. EVER.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yes! Can’t wait to read your recap! And you have GOT to try the peanut flour in cereal or even mixed into your oats…with the coconut milk? Oh that would be fantastic! I actually need to do that! Ha!

  2. Peanut flour awesome! Love it on sweet potatoes and pancakes!

  3. Excellent post! But it is always so difficult to me to choose favourite food… It always different products. Even in the fall I would tell that I don’t represent life without peanut butter, and now I don’t have any peanuts in the house. And I am live! But at the moment I wouldn’t do without eggs (a yolk porno my favourite look), oats and avocado πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

A lot of my favorites tend to change with the seasons as well! Plus the fact that I can get fixated on a food for months and then all of a sudden tire of it and move on to other things! Ha!

  4. lindsay says:

girl i’m with you. LOVE MY PB FLOUR and i love meat. But eggs and pb flour.. ohh that’s a toughy. I’d take any macro you spilled on me. <3

  5. I do find a difference with animal vs. plant proteins – I’m fine with plant proteins a lot of the time, but animal ones definitely satisfy me more. Bring on the eggs πŸ˜‰
And ohhh, pulled pork. I could go for some of that…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Good to know I’m not the only one. I think tofu and tempeh can be pretty filling at times, but it seems that nuts and seeds just don’t really do it for me. And I KNEW you’d have my back on the pork! *high five*

  6. Too much deliciousness in this post. TOO MUCH!

    Fat – almond butter
    Protein – Greek yogurt
    Carb – oats! πŸ˜€

And yes — definitely notice a difference between animal vs. plant proteins. One of the main reasons I gave up following a veggie diet was because no matter how much I ate, I always felt like something was missing and I was constantly prowling the kitchen looking for more. That definitely improved a tonne when I introduced more meat back into my life.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmmm, any coincidence that you just described your typical morning meal?? πŸ˜‰ I’m glad to hear that there are others out there who’ve noticed that about the animal proteins. I think tofu and tempeh can be pretty filling most times, but yeah, if I had to live off nuts and seeds, I’d always be ravenous. Obviously I have never EVER considered going raw! ha!

  7. Tracey says:

I love this post! I love seeing vegan food pics and recipes…but honestly they’d never keep me full. Like you said, animal protein is just more satiating. I’ve been dying to try Kabocha..but I’m intimated by it..lol

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Tracey! Glad to know I’m not alone in that! And girl, don’t be intimidated! Trust me, it’s well worth the hacking it takes to get into one! Haha! But just a little tip a friend gave me? Microwave it for a few minutes and it helps make it easier to cut! πŸ˜€

  8. Plant versus animal-based fats? Duh, I’d like to think we covered that question [in cheese] these past days πŸ˜‰ ??! And you know what I will say about your favourite grain regarding my heritage: pack up your bags and get that plan ticket, lady!

    Favourite source of…
    fat: almond and nut butters
    protein: all the legumes!
carbs: grains. Okay, more specifically: oats.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmmm, you think we could just live off bread and cheese? With a break here and there for chocolate and wine of course! πŸ˜‰

  9. Lee says:

    Fat – avocado
    Protein – eggs
    Carb – bread

  10. I love this post!!! Fig is a very strange favorite fruit and I love that you picked that. I must say I have never eaten a fig unless in the form of a newton πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It took me a while to come around to fresh figs…I used to only care for the dried ones. The trick is to eat them when they are SUPER ripe (almost to the point where you think they’re about to spoil), otherwise they taste like water!

  11. Animal protein definitely leaves with me a different feeling of full than plant protein, but I still feel very satisfied with plant protein. They just sit differently in my stomach, or something.

    Favourite fat source: almond butter!
Favourite protein source: salmon? Tofu? Steak? Too hard to choose!
Favourite carb source: Totes magotes with you on bread. Love it! Just bring me a baguette and brie, and I’m one happy gal.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

You know, every time I think of Brie, I think of you! And after years of just being “meh” towards it, I think I’m finally coming around! πŸ˜€

  12. This was so much fun to read! I really like learning about what foods people do and don’t like, so I guess it’s a good thing I’m a dietitian πŸ™‚
My favorite fat source is probably a tie between PB and avocado.
My favorite protein sources are salmon and string cheese.
Favorite carb sources are oatmeal/cereal in general and sweet potatoes!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Caroline! I’m the same way…I think that’s why I love grocery haul type posts as well. It’s fun to discover new foods or reconsider some that you’ve not tried in a while after seeing how much someone loves them!

  13. So.Much.Goodness.I.Can’t.Handle.

Fat-peanut butter (but avocados come in close πŸ˜‰ )
    Protein-Chicken
    Carbs-OATMEAL.

  14. I don’t think I could ever give up meat. Love me some legumes but I’ll be honest, it’s hard for me to feel satisfies with them as my protein source. Maybe it’s a mental thing?

  15. Oh so many questions all at once! πŸ˜‰

I know for me I personally feel better when I stick to a more plant based diet.

Fat-Avocado’s. I could eat them every day. When they are in season and don’t cost over $1 a piece I’ll buy a ton of them and freeze. I think I went a few weeks last season where I ate some every day. It. was. wonderful.

Protein-Eggs. I have a million and one recipes that I incorporate eggs into. They are budget friendly and so yummy.

Carbs- McCanns steal cut Irish oats. I eat them year round and I don’t even care they take 20 minutes or more to cook. They taste YUMazing.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmm, I may have to get the steel cuts another try…I’m just sooooo incredibly impatient/lazy when it comes to breakfast! haha! And I’ve got to remember to freeze more avocados…I always forget and feel like I’m rushing to eat them before they go bad!

  16. I’m glad I’m reading this while eating dinner because otherwise I’d be one cranky mofo after seeing all this deliciousness.

Fat: cheese, butter and ice cream. Wait, was I suppose to choose one? Oops.
Protein: eggs, beans, cheese (see how I did that?!)
Carbs: bread (all the breads) and pasta, but of course.

  17. Calee says:

Man, I wish I could find persimmons around here. I am thinking they would be a great substitute for tomatoes. Love this idea for a post!
