WIAW: A “Normal” Foundation

Hey guys!

So Saturday was a pretty busy day. Besides getting in touch with my inner narcissist and drooling over myself on a massage table, I was also tending to stuff around the house…cleaning, playing in the kitchen, and catching up on some blog reading too (if you’re wondering where the man-friend plays into all this, he was out of town). Since I was at the house all day, I figured it’d be a good day to change things up and finally follow the rules for What I Ate Wednesday…especially since I’ve played hookie for the last two weeks…sorry Jen! 😳

what i ate wednesday october breast cancer awareness halloween button

I used to have a lot of fun documenting all my eats every Wednesday, but I slowly got out of the habit of it once I started the night shift. It can be hard to remember to pre-make your dinner/snacks and photograph them before the sun goes down…and food captured  under fluorescent lighting? No thank you! So here ya have it, a FULL day of eats in live technicolor that don’t have an eerie greenish tint to them! 😉

Coffee

I started my day off with a cup of HALF CAFF coffee (no more eye-bugging coffee chugging for me…funny it never occurred to me that drinking two cups of half caff is the SAME THING as one cup of FULL caff until I felt like I was having a frickin’ heart attack!)

Coconut Cashew Quest Bar

I rarely EVER skip breakfast (I mean, seriously, it’s the best meal of the day!), but I had to run out for some quick errands so instead, I grabbed a Quest bar for the road.

Pumpkin Spice Delight Cake When I got home, I suddenly got the urge to go to the gym, so I went with it! While I wasn’t feeling super hungry, I did feel like I needed a little something to tide me over…so I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to eat the Pumpkin Delight I nabbed from the break room THREE weeks ago and have been hoarding ever since! 😯

I used to eat these ALL the time as a kid…ohhh, the memories!

Voluminous Pumpkin Peanut Butter Oat Bran with Molasses Drizzle from www.kissmybroccoliblog.com.jpg

After I finished up 30 minutes of walking, 20 minutes of chest and tri’s, and 10 minutes of modeling, I was back from the gym and RAVENOUS so I made up for my lack of breakfast with a bowl of thick and creamy Peanut Butter Pumpkin Oat Bran!

Gingerbread Spice Tea

After I finished cleaning up the disaster I created in the kitchen after making ONE bowl of oat bran (?!), I settled on the couch with a nice WARM mug of gingerbread spice tea (x 2) and got caught up on emails and blog reading…all while cursing the subarctic
(read: 55 degree) temperatures outside.

I’m SO not ready for winter! 🙁

Cottage Cheese Granola & Cinnamon Roasted Chickpeas

Before I left for my massage, I threw together a small snack of cottage cheese topped with cinnamon roasted chickpeas and the last of the cranberry granola that Meghan graciously sent me home with week before last.

Many much moosen cinnamon added post pic! 😉

Adora Dark Chocolate Calcium

Plus a little dark chocolate for my belly AND my bones just as I went out the door!

Leftover Cheesy Chicken Spinach & Roll & SaladAfter a much-needed massage (you know it’s bad when the masseuse tells you that you really needed it), I came home and enjoyed the other half of my leftover chicken & spinach roll from lunch on Friday with some marinara for dipping and a salad of romaine, carrots, and tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar.

Cheesy Chicken & Spinach Roll

Sorry, but that cheesy spinachy deliciousness deserves a closer look! 😉

Beachaven Red Wine

I ended the night with a glass of wine and Netflix while under my the WARMTH of my electric blanket.

Mini Pops Popcorn

And then somehow, this entire bag of popcorn disappeared…I blame Schmidt! 😉

All jokes aside, I have to say I feel very proud of myself for this day of eats…eating when I was hungry, stopping when I was full, and not over-analyzing every single morsel….after a couple days of getting caught up on sleep and really focussing on ME, I was feeling “normal” again. It really shouldn’t surprise me that, after months of hard work, I now have a strong foundation with intuitive eating, but for some reason it does. Kind of like looking back on a hike and seeing the long and winding path you’ve traveled to get to where you are…it’s humbling, gratifying, and validating.

Which is why I’m so excited to be able to share it with you guys! Jamie is extending a discount for her next Intuitive Eating Challenge to all KMB readers! For the next
48 hours, you can sign up for the 21-day challenge for only $39…that’s ten dollars off! 1. I so loved the IE challenge and have thought of doing the 1:1 coaching with Jamie but am sort of wanting to keep navigating things on my own.

I regularly did WIAW and now I’m going to mix it up and just do it every so often as I was feeling like it was a chore every Wednesday trying to remember to snap every picture of every meal. I love gawking at what others have had though. All your eats look delicious, favs are the rolls (obviously) and the dark chocolate om nom nom.

Best thing I ate this week is probably the cheese platter Nick and I had in Sydney. Or the Dumplings. Or the Chocolate mousse filled chocolate malt ball cake. Or the Cookie Dough Ice Cream. Or the Red Wine. What can I say it was definitely an EAT ALL THE FOOD kind of weekend 😉 Oh and no we didn’t go drunk to the zoo but I like the way you think!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ok, I was already shaking my head in agreement when I read the cheese platter…because I already drooled over that on your blog, but HELL-o!? chocolate mousse filled chocolate malt ball cake?!?!?! Omg, that sounds beyond delicious…I’m definitely greener than spinach with envy over here! LOL

  2. So happy to hear the positivity shining through and your feelings of being back on track 🙂 awesome!! I think we all struggle in some way maintaining a positive relationship with food. Our society is sooo focussed on this, making it impossible to truly feel “healthy.” I actually just bought the IE book and excited to start reading.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“…making it impossible to truly feel ‘healthy.'” <- Amen!! And seriously, it may have taken me like two months to read Intuitive Eating, but it is by far one of the best books I've ever read! I had so many "ah ha" moments...especially while reading the chapter one how to raise intuitive eaters. I almost skipped that paragraph (since I doubt I'll ever have children) but a friend of mine said it was very enlightening...and she was so right! I still need to work on getting a review of the book up on the blog, but it's been so hard to narrow it down so that I don't end up with a 2000 word post! Ha!

  3. I giggled at that pumpkin delight, I’ve never seen one before. It looks so happy! lol

  4. Fran@BCDC says:

Love the little pumpkin cake! I had one of them while I was away. Don’t know where to buy them here…probably for the best…have a great day, Heather! (oat bran looks yummy, too!)

  5. A post-massage glass of wine + popcorn and The New Girl??? My ideal night!! For the record I don’t know if it’s possible to NOT finish a bag of popcorn.

I made pumpkin snickerdoodles last weekend so those are probably the best things I ate. And have definitely been a meal replacement. Whoops! At least pumpkin is a vegetable right?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Pumpkin snickerdoodles?!?!?! Um, girl…are you holding out on me?! I mean, I don’t see how those could get any better…cinnamon AND pumpkin?! Wait, sandwich some peanut butter between two of those babies and it’s ON!!!

  6. Ohhh I need to get more of those Adora chocolates. The perfect excuse for a nightly piece of chocolate 😉 I liked that mini popcorn but I found it hard to eat! It’s SO tiny I had it all over me and all over the couch hahaha

  7. That smiling popcorn with the googly eyes just totally cracked me up — clearly this girl is easily amused 😉 But hearing about your successes with IE gives me an even BIGGER smile. I know what you mean about it feeling kind of surreal, though… I used to celebrate things like being able to eat a cookie without guilt, and while it probably seemed strange to some people, it was a HUGE deal to me. And speaking of cookies — pumpkin chocolate chip — best thing I ate this week 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know! I don’t even bother trying to explain those little victories to most of my IRL friends because really, if you’ve never had a poor relationship with food, you just can’t understand that triumphant feeling of eating something, enjoying it, and not having ANY guilt over it! I still remember the first cookie I had sans guilt. I texted one of my blends and was like “YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS!!” Haha!

  8. The cheesy spinach looks perfect!

  9. So happy for you love! It’s weird to look back and see how far you’ve come though…I remember the first time I ate a sandwich in recovery. Not a big deal at all (and a daily occurrence) for a lot of people, but for me it was huge and represented how hard I had been working. I’m so happy to hear that you’re feeling ‘normal’ again!

  10. Night photos SUCK! I haven’t been able to get any good food pics lately, since it gets darks at 6:45pm, and I don’t get home until 8 or 9ish. Ugh.

Lovin’ the look of that dinner… Leftovers rock my world.

SO SO SO happy about your amazing foundation. This looks like such a delicious, easy, HAPPY day of eats. You rock <3.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks love! It was definitely a happy day…and while I’ve had a few not-so-happy days over the last week, it’s good to know that I still have that foundation to always fall back on…and proof to remind me of it with this post! 🙂

PS, Get yourself a light box, missy! I swear by mine and seriously, it took a whopping 30 minutes to make! All you need is a big box, scissors, tape, and some tissue paper! Here’s the tutorial that I used: http://www.edibleperspective.com/home/2010/11/29/photography-101-the-light-box.html

  11. omg. pumpkin delights. I always buy one box a season and when theyre gone, theyre gone! no more until the next year. it brings back so much nostalgia!

and btw. thank you so much for your kind comment reply! it was the first thing I read this morning and really started my day off on the right foot (since my night was filled with tossing and turning). so again, thanks for making my day!

  12. I LOVED Jamie’s challenge! She gives us the fundamentals to truly change our perspective with food and let us live our lives not worrying about what/when/how we eat. Best thing I’ve eaten lately… hmm… I’m going to go with the steak dinner I’m going to be having tonight before going to ’50 Shades!’ <– Yep, a musical parody of the books 😉

  13. Lucie says:

Oh how I love that smiling pumpkin cookie, adorable!
And believe me, my kitchen looks like a disaster after making a friggin’ simple omelette! I don’t know how this can even happen.
I am SO proud of you for getting that far in your journey! You’re killing it and you’re such an inspiration love! Overanalyzing is the worst, it still gets me so many times!
Best thing I ate this week – I think it was one of my chocolate apple muffins and my buckwheat porridge! Wait, that’s two things, but they were on the same plate, so that counts, right?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you SO much Lucie!! And it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who still tends to overthink things at times!

I’m so far behind on your bloggy…I’ve got to go check out those muffins! YUM! 🙂

  14. I love curling up with a glass of wine to end my evening, I just so happened to do that last night! (P.S. I did break out the pumpkin last night…deeeelicious!)

  15. Nice blog title. 😉

Would you believe I have never seen or even heard of a Pumpkin Delight?! I must have grown up under a rock. Or been so focused on the Nutty Buddy bars that I didn’t look up.

    • Please tell me you’ve had an Oatmeal Creme Pie at least.

The best were Tastycake Butterscotch Krimpets, though…but you had to live in a certain part of the country to get those. 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hardy har har har! You’re sooooo funny! 😉

Haha! Oh my gosh, Nutty Buddy’s were always a favorite…though I’m a weird kid and always thought the generic ones tasted better! Ha! Honestly, I was a total Little Debbie cake junkie growing up…just as long as it wasn’t those nasty ass cream filled raisin cake things! Ick!

  16. Have you tried the caramel mini pops yet?!?! OMG!!!!
And every time I go get a massage, the masseuse tells me I should’ve booked a double session. Thanks, but my pockets are pretty shallow. Even in Mexico, I booked a relaxing massage and water treatment (shocking!) and the masseuse tried to find the word for “knots” in my back and kept trying to tell me that I should get a second session the next day. Cute 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

No! I’m afraid to try them because I just KNOW I’m going to love them and then be totally pissed off when I can’t find anymore! We may be fighting over stuff at the Maxx come this weekend! Lol

  17. Gingerbread Spice Tea?! Say it’s not true I have to add yet another item to the “list of food/beverages we can’t get over here” [along with those Adora disks which the chocoholic in me could clearly use as an excuse to eat more of the good stuff – hint, hint at the company ;)]. Okay … got it.
Back to the actually important part, though: Reading about how much your relationship with food has improved makes me so happy whenever you mention it. You couldn’t have described it any better than by the comparison with a hike. Starting out it seems like a rough path and impossible to conquer. But as we start out our legs somehow know what to do on their own and we get to the point where we can look back and notice we made progress without even realizing it. I’m still somewhere in the beginning but eager to follow you :).
The best thing I’ve eaten this week? I’ll split it up into sweet [the Chocolate Date Caramel Bars I made last weekend] and savoury [vegan Mushroom Stroganoff and because it was a great repeat another one: Pinch of Yum’s Kabocha Lentil Curry]. I clearly have trouble making decisions.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you SO much, MP!! *hugs*

Sounds like you had a pretty delicious week! I totally drooled over those bars and that stroganoff! And I’m still thinking about making a stroganoff of my own…eventually! I keep buying mushrooms to do it and then there they sit in the fridge until they’re almost bad and I’m scurrying around trying to use them up! 😯 Focus, Heather! Focus! Lol

  18. I am proud of you for every bump, twist, success, slip, climb…and I’m happy that I feel as though I’ve gone through a similar journey. 🙂

  19. I want to bathe in that oat bran it looks divine!!!!

  20. girl, the challenge changed my life, too. even though i’ve made so many more changes in my life since the challenge and have grew so much since then, the challenge really was the perfect first step for me to take and i am so happy you had such an incredible and life changing experience with it, too. <3 i loved this post so much. it seems so natural, too. no diet to follow, no rules, just eating. very very proud of you love! i am also really impressed how beautiful your leftovers look haha leave it to you to make leftovers look heavenly, huh?

    love you babe

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Awww, thanks love! And really, I feel the same way when I read your posts/see your Instagrams…I love how free and natural you are with food…as it should be! 🙂

  21. I have never heard of those pumpkin delights, but they sure are cute and sound delicious!!

  22. uhm… all I can say is.. YUMMY!! Everything you ate today totally hit my tastebuds! Haha, the pumpkin oat bowl looked amazing! 🙂

    fitnessfootprint.com

  23. It sounds like a perfect day! A massage is always wonderful and eating what you want when you want it is a great feeling! I love popcorn, I’m horrible when its around. I will almost always finish an entire bag in one sitting and even go back to make another batch if i’m at home.

  24. I’ve never heard of the Pumpkin Delights either. How fun! My favorite thing I’ve been eating lately are the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies I made a couple of days ago. When it comes to these cookies I have no self control so I don’t let myself make them very often!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, that’s perfectly understandable…the only thing better than pumpkin and peanut butter is pumpkin and chocolate! And I can NEVER say no to cookies! The pumpkin delights are like little soft batch cookies stuffed with pumpkin-spice filling…so good!

  25. Pumpkins. My kids love it too…
    I will bookmark the blog.
    Cheers…

  26. The only time I eat, or have, or use(?), molasses is when we make molasses cookies at Christmastime… But you have now convinced me to go out an buy a jar and use it other times throughout the year, like ASAP — thanks 😉 The best thing that I’ve eaten lately was dessert last night, it was DIVINE!

  27. I’m glad you’re feeling back on track with your intuitive eating again! See? I knew you’d have no trouble picking up right where you left off. 😉

I’ve never heard of a pumpkin delight before (what are they?), but they are cute, pumpkiny, and sweet, so I’m pretty sure I’d like them!

The best thing I’ve eaten all week is this shredded kale and brussels sprouts salad I’m eating right now from Bon Appetit. It’s so good!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

They’re like little turnovers I guess…but with a softer kind of dough…ok, maybe more like a soft cookie…with a sweet pumpkin-spice filling! The non-seasonal ones are called apple delights which were always my favorite lunch box dessert growing up!

  28. Your meals all look so good girl! I’m especially drooling over your oatmeal! I’m so not ready for winter either. It was a high of 50 here today, and I thought I was going to DIE!

  29. Bravo, again for your inspiring journey- I’m so glad to see a blogger actually practice what they preach.

That quest flavour is so good- especially when left in the car glove box and melted into the shape of the car guide. And love the breakfast for brunch/lunch initiative- I like your style!

Best thing I’ve eaten this week is breakfast now…cold leftover pizza. Yep, it had to be done!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Arman! And seriously, cold leftover pizza IS the best! I was just drooling over the shrimp one you posted to Instagram! Yum!

  30. Meghan is the granola queen! Jealous that you got to try some of her cranberry recipe 🙂

I really like all of your pictures today! No strange tint at all… Which I now have to go back and look for, because I’ve never noticed that before. Haha.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’m just bummed that we ran out of time before I got to sample some of her lemon blueberry constant-work-in-progress granola! Ha! I swear one of these days she’ll settle on the recipe and post that thing!

And seriously, you’re not missing anything from those earlier WIAW’s…omg, some of the pics I used to share…8O !!!

  31. Oh my gosh! I haven’t had one of those Pumpkin Delights since I was a kid! I need to find them ASAP 🙂 I used to love them!

  32. Julie says:

I have yet to try oat bran & need to do so!

  33. Wow! Everything looks delicious! And roasted sweet chickpeas?? What a genius idea!!

  34. That pumpkin oat bran…oh my…I’m glad you are feeling much more back to normal again!

  35. Kat says:

Why don’t you go ahead and throw some of that cold weather my way? I’m still over here sweating with my morning cup of joe. Freaking LA weather!!
BTW, I totes have that tea, although I must say the candy cane lane green tea is my favorite. I literally STOCK up on that stuff in the winter! I think I still have 3 boxes from LAST winter lol

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I was never really a fan of mint tea until just recently…I’ll have to try that one this year! That is if I can make a good dent in the tea stash that I have right now…I may or may not have three boxes of sugar cookie sleighride! 😉

PS, you can HAVE my cold weather! I’d RATHER be sweating over a cup of coffee! Ha!

  36. That read looks so yummy! Reminds me I need to get a bottle 😀

  37. Yeah; you shared a full day of food, and it looks mighty delicious too. I’ve been going back to my roots and managing to photographing a full day so I can stay true to the WIAW link up. Of course now that I’ve said that, I’ll probably veer again.
I’m thrilled you’re feeling better about your relationship with food and you got some much needed “me” time. I’m enjoying some right now and catching up with you too, of course.
