Confessions of a Seasonal Hermit

It’s no secret that I hate the cold.

Seasonal Hermit Snow

Β

In the summer, you can find me frolicking around in my summer dresses and flippy floppies, happy as can be, but come November and on into APRIL (I swear we have the longest winters), I climb into my little hermit shell and pretty much lose any desire to go anywhere or do anything.

As the temperatures recently plummeted (yes, I am allowed to be that dramatic when it is eight degrees BELOW ZERO and it’s windy as shi…Chicago! πŸ˜‰ ), I started to realize some of my cold weather quirks…

Hair Dryer

When showering, I spend at LEAST 5 minutes stalling under the hot water, just so I don’t have to get out and freeze. Once out, I dry off at a lightning fast speed and then make a beeline to the blow dryer…but not to dry my hair. Nope, I use it to warm my shivering body!

Coffee

I spend my mornings slowly sipping coffee that I insist on warming in the microwave every 5 minutes because I swear it’s not hot enough. By the afternoon, I make the switch to herbal tea, or sometimes I just hold a mug of hot water to my face.

All while wrapped up in my favorite fuzzy robe AND under the electric blanket that the man-friend bought me last year for Christmas.

And speaking of Christmas, if you guys have never seen A Christmas Story (my all-time favorite holiday movie), then you really need to watch this little video…because EVERY time I leave the house, I feel like Alfie’s kid brother in all those layers.

I can’t put my arms dowwwwwwwwwwwwwn!

Leggings

That being said, it only makes sense to make the most of those layers…and you know, buy every single pair of fleece-lined leggings I can find at TJ Maxx! πŸ˜‰

And when I DO have to go out of the house,

Heater

I hop in Elvira, crank her heat up to 90Β°F, put the butt warmers heated seats on full blast, annnnnnnnnnd…

Movies - Thor 2

Make sure the evening ends on a steamy note!

Shhh, don’t tell the man-friend!

Seriously though, this movie was even BETTER than the first one! Surprisingly, Tom Hiddleston (who plays Loki) provides a lot of comic relief and Chris Hemsworth? Well, he just does a fantastic job of playing muscly man meat…I mean a NORSE GOD!

And let me just say, it took me longer to edit that first picture than it did to type this entire post…from the comfort of my bed now that I have a new WORKING modem…no thanks to the idiot kid working at Best Buy…but that’s a story for another day! πŸ˜‰

Do you have any special keep-warm quirks?

Anyone else feel extremely claustrophobic in winter coats?

To read your post it was so cheerful πŸ˜‰ I live in Russia and we have too very long winter… Therefore since the end of November on April I literally live in the plaid. Coming home from the street, I am simply wrapped in it and I go as a big larva all evening πŸ˜€ And these winter coats… For me always a big problem to find something nice for the winter! I would like to get over there, where warmly all the year round πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, I’m so glad you liked it Marina! Hey, sometimes you just gotta laugh, right? I swear I wouldn’t last ONE DAY in Russia in the winter…I’d for sure shiver myself to death! haha! By the looks of things, I’m thinking that we need a little island for all of us cold weather haters! πŸ˜‰

  2. I hate the cold weather. It’s forecast to snow here in Scotland this week. That makes me very very unhappy.
For the last month, I don’t think I’ve been able to feel my fingers and toes.
I do the same thing with my hair dryer as well. I’m finding that I’m spending more time in the shower and drinking copious amounts of green tea at work to keep me warm. I’m also overdosing on the soup and bowls of oatmeal to keep me toasty.
All I want to wear is jumpers…and my duvet! So glad we have a spare one to snuggle up on the sofa with.

  3. You’re NOT alone! It’ll never make sense to me I was born in winter because it’s my least favourite season and I’m such a cold wuss.
Winter coats? I call mine a walk-around sleeping bag. Stylish? Not so much but at least the colour’s nice. Warm? You better believe it or else it wouldn’t get my seal of approval.
“that I insist on warming in the microwave every 5 minutes because I swear it’s not hot enough” -> that’s me and tea. I’ll have to get un-used to that habit soon, though, as I won’t have a microwave at my parents ;).
Another cold-weather-must: wearing kidney warmer [are they called that over there, too?]. And fleece-lined tights – can’t do the leggings + socks thing, weird, I know.
    Stay warm today!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmmm, kidney warmers? Are they some kind of warm packs for your back? Oh and while you have access to a microwave, get a load of this: a patient told me the other night that she puts her socks in the microwave for a couple of seconds before putting them on in the morning. Genius? Umm, HECK YEAH!! πŸ˜‰ And let me guess, your walk around sleeping back is red! When’s your birthday, love? Mine’s coming up in a couple of weeks! πŸ˜€

  4. Me and the cold do NOT get along…. which is unfortunate since I live in what I swear is one of the coldest places in Canada. The funny thing is that I’ll willingly go out to snowboard in freezing cold temperatures, but when it comes to all other times? I do whatever it takes to stay toasty warm. This means… fuzzy socks, multiple layers, scarves around the house, blankets, hot drinks, hot water bottles, loooong showers, and even baths — which I don’t even like that much because I get bored in ’em πŸ˜† The one thing I can’t do, though, is bundle up to the point where I can’t move — soooo uncomfortable. I’d rather be a little colder!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well I guess with snowboarding, you have something to distract yourself from the cold…plus you’re getting a pretty good workout in so I doubt you have time for shivering! And I couldn’t agree more with taking the cold over stifling layers…I don’t even like to be under a blanket when I’m in my robe because I feel like I’m always getting my legs tangled up in it! Ha!

  5. Lindsay says:

don’t hate me but it’s 80F here today. i’m in shorts

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Are you SERIOUS?! Well, our temps did get up to 72 out of the blue yesterday…but then we were under a tornado warning all evening! 😯

  6. i love my car seat warmers! before we got the car, my hubs asked if i wanted the heaters and i was all “psshht! what for?!” and now i thank him every winter becaseu i run outside, start the car, jack up the seat warmer to the “fry your ass” setting and run back inside while the car heats up. i HATE the cold!!!

    -kathy
    Vodka and Soda

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“Fry your ass” setting <- Bahahaha! LOVE it! I swear, this is the first car I've ever had with them, but I will NEVER have one without from now on!

  7. So first of all, I cannot stop laughing at that first pic. Oh my god, that is awesome. And I like the hair dryer trick…I may have to steal that in the future πŸ˜‰ For now, my keep-warm tricks involve fuzzy socks, hoodies, blankets…and basically just refusing to go outside unless absolutely necessary πŸ˜‰

  8. I force Alex to snuggle with me all the time πŸ˜‰ hehe that’s my favorite way to keep warm!! But I do love electric blankets and hot coffee as well!

  9. You pretty much described me as soon as the temps drop below 65! I drink hot water like it’s my job after I pound about a whole pot of coffee.

Oh and PS, that first picture was SO worth the time. LOVE. IT! : D

  10. I’m with ya on being a seasonal hermit… I HATE the winter & cold!! I lived in FL for 8 years & miss it terribly this time of year. Second winter back in WI & I am still not a fan!
Love the hermit pic & hot showers = bliss! πŸ™‚

  11. I splurged and got heated seats in my new car…best decision EVER! I HATE being cold :(.

  12. Maria says:

Christmas Story is hands down my family’s favorite Christmas movie. In fact, we watch it all day long on Christmas Day and numerous times leading up to Christmas. It’s just so….nostalgic. They said they kept the set at like 64 degrees so the actors would always look cold (because they were!).

I’m not sure my temp setting on my car goes up to 90! Haha.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

We watch it at least once every Christmas too…and then speak through movie quotes at the dinner table! “Fraaaaaaa-GEE-laaaaaay” Hahaha! Omg, I can’t imagine having to work on that set! It’s always cold in the hospital but one of the advantages to working by myself is that as soon as my shift starts, the thermostat gets CRANKED UP! πŸ˜€

  13. Holy girl. I LOVE that first pic – I swear, this is ME!! I SOOOOOO hate the cold and I can not believe I am running around with blue fingernails and lips already! Shall we start a project and find some sponsors who donate money for our move and luxurious life to California?? I’m in!
Thank God there are some kitchen goddesses out there who make fab recipes I can remake in the warm kitchen all weekend long. I JUST ate a huge bowl of your Pumpkin Chilli followed by the Pumpkin Bread! I am nearly dead by all this deliciousness! Or maybe it is because I am still drooling over Th0r’s muscles I got to watch last night??? haha πŸ™‚
    Happy Sunday Darling!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

My dear, dear Lucie, you seriously MADE my day when I saw your IG pics today! Thank you so much for trying my recipes! And I’m SO glad you liked them! Oh and I just want you to know that you were totally in my head with the peanut flour sub…I’ve been thinking up ideas for a peanut flour pumpkin bread for weeks now! Love you! xoxo

  14. Crap I wish I knew the Christmas story bit sooner. The movie was filmed here in Cleveland, and you can even take tours of the house. Guess you’ll just have to come back.
I pour a cup of hot coffee during week meetings just to hold the mug. I never drink any of it, but delight in the pleasure the warm mug brings me. I also spend more hours in front of the fire than I probably should. I love it though.

  15. Emily says:

I loathe the cold. Seriously. Loathe it.
I love all of the other aspects of fall and winter but cold weather really, really gets to me. I guess I’m a true California girl at heart!
You’re not the only one downing hot beverages like nobodies business- I’m with you!

  16. I hate winter… hate it! I LIVE in my sweats, a bathrobe, and fuzzy socks. Sexy right? poor luvy… lol!

  17. Jessie says:

If you’d like, I’ll try to send some of the warmer weather here in Kuwait to you?

  18. Hahahaha I’m laughing so hard at that first picture. You are hilarious!

Ugh I hate the winter too. It makes me so much more antisocial because going out in the cold just isn’t worth it half the time. πŸ˜› That being said, I think this winter will be much easier for me to survive because my new car has actual working heat and butt warmers. Yay!

One thing I used to hate about winter is when I would leave my gym bag in the car all day, my clothes would be SO cold when I went to put them on at the gym at the end of the day. So now I blow dry my gym clothes before I put them on once I get to the gym. I look like a crazy person, but at least I’m warm haha!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, I know exactly what you mean! They get so cold you might as well be dressing OUTSIDE! Can’t believe I never thought to blow dry them first…brilliant! And yay for butt warmers! I swear I will NEVER own a car without them again!

  19. I don’t go outside in the winter which in Canada means from October to May. I stand under the hot shower and drink 3 cups of tea if I’m forced to. And by forced to I mean daily when I’m required to show up at my job. Ugh.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! When I first read this, I thought you were saying that you drink tea while IN the shower…I was like, now THAT girl means business! Lol

  20. Lol love all of your winter quirks! Too funny! I especially love your in a hermit crab picture and as I said on Instagram I think you look like Sebastian from the Little Mermaid, in a good way of course πŸ˜‰

I turn the heater on in our car and in our apartment when it is warm. I have both a heat pack and hot water bottle I will rotate between and become OBSESSED with soup and generally not socialising with anyone because it is too cold!! πŸ˜€

  21. Amie says:

Hahaha omg you sound just like me!!! Especially the whole blow-drying your bod part. This was my #1 reason for moving to Maui and never looking back! Although now i get cold anytime its less than 80 degrees so that might be a problem…

  22. I’m a California girl through and through, so the winter is so not my jam. My tips for keeping warm include your hairdryer trip, baths on baths on baths, and sexy man friend time ;). Keeps things realllll hot.

Oh and also the gym I guess.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Love it! You know, I’ve been wanting to do some laps in the pool at the gym for the last few weeks, but just the thought of getting in the water and then leaving with wet hair makes me die a little inside! Lol

  23. Jodie says:

I blow dry myself when I’m cold lol.
    I drink so much tea.
Look like I’ve gained 10 pounds because of all the layers.
Be turns his heat up when I’m coming over πŸ™‚

  24. Pingback: Ready or not…{MIMM}

  25. Hahaha yes, I’m the same way, except I have it way worse because it’s already winter here in Canada. Right now, I’m sitting on top of a furnace vent wrapped in a massive faux-fur blanket, drinking hot coffee. I take a heated magic bag to bed with me, too! πŸ˜€

    • kissmybroccoli says:

What is this heated magic bag of which you speak? Sounds like one needs to magically appear in my cold cold hands right now! πŸ˜‰

  26. I just watched Thor 2 AGAIN yesterday. I think quite possibly being sleep deprived made the movie more funny the first time, but I still loved it. Never a dull moment.

Your hermit photoshop job reminded me of Marcel the Shell on youtube. I hope that you have seen that… I laugh just thinking about it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

So I’d never heard of that video, but I just watched it and omg, TOO FUNNY! The lint on a string…bahahaha! Thank you so much, Madison, I needed a good belly laugh today!

  27. Eric says:

    Ok so get this..

Throws and Scarves for your pet hermit crab..how fabulous does that look!?

Multi-billion dollar industry idea right there!

  28. I warm up my coffee over and over again too…then switch to tea and continuously boil water to refill it for the day!

  29. Caitlin says:

i’m always looking for a blog post that will cheer me up about winter and that hermit heather image just had me cracking up! classic. i don’t use the hair dryer to warm myself up post-shower but i do pull the towel into the shower, wrap myself in it, THEN turn off the water. i dry off inside the shower then i dash into my room and put on a robe. i love starting my car in the morning when i park outside (i rarely get the garage) and legit letting it warm up for 10 minutes. i don’t care how much gas i’m wasting and how many ozone layers i’m ripping off…it’s worth it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Glad you liked it, Cait! And Yes, TOTALLY worth the ozone damage! It’s every booty…I mean BODY…for themselves out there! πŸ˜‰

  30. Chrystal says:

I’m a bit of a hermit anyway but it does get worse in the winter. I wasn’t too bad with it when I lived in OK, but now that I live in MI…I would just rather stay home. I tell myself its safer. Not that I think I am a bad driver but I get so worried someone else is going to lose control of their car. I don’t care what anyone says 4 x 4 does not mean “drive in snow at 75mph.”

I wear cuddle duds under my clothes when I have to go out. I have been searching for some fleece lined leggings in plus size. They sell out so quickly at our TJMaxx. πŸ™ Boo.

I’ll do the same with my coffee and I have a plug in warmer that I use for candles, but in the winter it sits on my desk so I can keep my coffee and tea warm. I also have a space heater under my desk. I work from home but no matter what the heat is set on I am always freezing. If I get too cold the arthritis makes my life so miserable I can’t bend my fingers to type.

Winter sure is pretty but its just way too cold!

  31. Sarah Pie says:

I HATE the cold!! A problem since I live in chicago where it’s cold like half the year… I tend to compensate with giant sweaters and mugs of tea x1000.

Side note I loved the new Thor movie too πŸ™‚

  32. And so let the Hunger Games begin.

Sorry the A Bomb. I just have hunger games on my mind because Australia is going crazy about it. Silly country.

I think we have a similar stance on Winter….I just need to glance at my electrical bill and see the graph indicate triple the usage compared to Summer…oops. Ha- I love boiling mugs of water and just putting it to my face. Or using a portable heater as a seat :s
