Mini BIRTHDAY Kabocha Cakes with Chocolate Yogurt Frosting - Make a WISH!!

Note: You guys know I’m in NO WAYΒ a baker…sometimes I just get lucky! Protein powders can be really tricky when baking so while the one I used worked perfectly in these cakes, I knew I couldn’t make any guarantees with other brands/sources. Instead of spending a week experimenting with various powders, in the end, I just opted to omit it altogether. But after getting the man-friend’s approval on these cakes, I just couldn’t keep the recipe to myself! So, if you have a little baking know-how and care to experiment, please feel free…and then come back here and tell me all your secrets! And for my fellow non-bakers, there’s always the original donut recipe.

But let’s talk more about that frosting, eh?

I’ve never been a fan of traditional cake frosting. It’s always much too sugary for my tastes and really, I’d rather just have the cake underneath, BUT with this Greek yogurt “frosting”, I couldn’t get enough! And since it’s low in sugar, I had absolutely no problem justifying having this cake for breakfast! It’s creamy, cool, and perfectly sweet! But you know what makes it taste even better??

    When it’s FREE!!! πŸ˜€

Yoplait GreekYep, you heard me! My wonderful friends over at Yoplait slash the people who made me a celebrity for a dayΒ are offering up a CASE of their new blended Greek yogurts to one lucky KMB reader!

    1. OMG OMG OMG!!! Check you out in that video!! I love your accent it is too cute for words!! πŸ™‚ That chicken salad you made sounds good too.

So awesome that they had you go to their headquarters I remember you blogging about it a whilst back but I love seeing the video of how they put it all together. I wonder if that yoghurt will come out here in Australia.

And as I said on twitter, I NEED those mini cakes in my life. Anything mini food I’m on board with πŸ˜‰

    2. I love the video!! That is awesome that they had you come to their headquarters! How cool is that?!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Melissa! It was pretty awesome…sometimes it still feels like I dreamed it all up! And thank you so much for the birthday wishes! πŸ™‚

    3. Awwwr, where can I order autographed pictures of that gorgeous girl sitting in the black cardigan? Even though you didn’t ask: yes, I’m voting for more videos/vlogs on your blog :)! Hope I can watch the whole one once I’m back from work because I have to dash now … woops.
Mmmkay, not a baker?! Who told you that? Hellooo do these look awesome – and in a way pancakes should be considered baking, too, so … Baking Queen! However, what about our agreement on egg-free baking? Seems like you let that one slip again ;). But you’re excused today because it’s your birthday [week].

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Nope, haven’t forgotten…just haven’t been able to get back in the kitchen for experiments! I came down with some sort of bug mid week this week and am just now starting to feel better so here’s hoping that after the weekend, I can try a few things for my favorite vegan! πŸ˜‰

Hope you have a great Friday and a relaxing weekend! Perhaps you can sit down and get some WRITING done? I have a new pack of stickers that’s just DYING to get plastered all over a letter to Germany! Lol

        • Sorry! Once I got your letter I planned to reply immediately because … just because [will explain it in the letter :)]. Only I somehow got sidetracked and … Well, it just jumped right to the top of my weekend priority list. Stickers – you know how to bribe me ;).

    4. Now I am officially claiming I know you in person….my cruciferous celebrity! You have an awesome accent- I love it!

Love that recipe- They would be perfect for the morning with a side of eggs. I’m abit of bread so those mini cakes sound like a great replacement!

Once again, I am blessed to have come across your blog and to be present here to celebrate three years!!! Here’s to many many more- whipped, spanked and battered…recipes of awesomeness.

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you Arman!! I’m SO glad we found each other…I look so forward to reading your posts! You never fail to get me chuckling and/or thinking seriously by the time I’m halfway through…really, that is a special kind of talent right there and you should really be proud of how far of an outreach you’ve gotten in such little time! πŸ™‚

    5. Hey you’re famous! πŸ˜€

I’m going to forgive you for hosting this giveaway only open to US residents, but only because this mini kabocha cake looks so good! πŸ˜‰ Also, happy early birthday! I hope you have a fun day planned tomorrow!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Do I at least get some bonus points for asking? I didn’t even think about the whole customs/liquid product thing, but I was crossing my fingers and toes that they could still at least ship to Canada…le sigh!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, beautiful! All I have planned so far is brunch with my family…my mom’s making homemade biscuits, eggs, and BACON! So yeah, I’m kind of excited! πŸ˜€

    6. You’re famousssss! Don’t forget about us little people! And I’m super impressed by this cake. I have had ZERO luck baking with vega. Girl you got the magic touch! Happy early birthday to my favorite sassy broccoli and blog (seriously you really are one of my favs :))

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Reeeeeeeally?!?! Awww, big broccoli hugs!! I love you lady and I’m SO glad we found each other! Thanks for the birthday wishes! I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing, not stressing about the blog weekend! xoxo

    7. Eeee lookit you on YouTube! You’re basically a celebrity now πŸ˜€ Being able to see you live in action was seriously neat, though… makes me wish I wasn’t so shy around the camera 😯 Also, you sound exactly how I thought you’d sound. And try not to be skeeved out by the fact that I’m thinking about your voice when you’re not around πŸ˜‰

Sprinkles not being optional — fact!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! I’m in yourrrrrrrrr head!! But seriously, I was so nervous the whole time that my knee caps were shaking! I couldn’t believe seeing the final result with the video how cool and calm the other girls seemed…especially Kate! Believe me…they edited my parts a LOT! Lol

    8. Caroline says:

Look at you all famous and everything! My favorite cake I would have to say is carrot cake, but that cupcake looks absolutely beautiful and delectable! Happy Friday πŸ™‚

    9. oh my goodness, that Southern accent!!! I can’t even handle how cute that is.
Happy early birthday and have a fabulous weekend lady!! <3

    10. Julia says:

EEEEEK I just want to squuuuuuuueeze you!! This is such a cool video and you’re just adorable! What a wonderful opportunity to partner with yoplait! You ladies are so fun, I want to sit around and eat yogurt with you all! And your kaboocha cupcakes are gorgeous and amazing! I need to make me a batch of squash cupcakers ASAP!! Have a great weekend! xoxoxoxo

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Ahhhh! Julia, you make me smile SO much!! Thank you! And I’d LOVE to sit around and eat yogurt with you all day…just do me a favor and bring some of that cranberry sauce…but more than just the tablespoon you’re hoarding in your fridge! πŸ˜‰

    11. Chrystal M. says:

I knew the minute I found you were from TN you were going to sound like that! So cute! I grew up in OK were half the people sound like that and the city people have just a hint of twang. That would be me. I am city, so my twang is minimal and it really comes out when I start talking (tawlking lol) fast or I am really tired. This commercial is amazing and that is sooooo cool.

I’ve used greek yogurt in baking/cooking and as topping. But not Yoplait brand and I haven’t used it as a frosting. I am going to have to give that one a try. I have been using protein powders for my frosting and glazes and as you mentioned it can be quite a challenge. But the final result can be pretty amazing when you nail it!

That photo is amazeballs (yeah, I said it.) And that is definitely desertstalker material girl! Its beaauooooootiful. Can’t believe they are made out of squash. Look at how perfect they are. And Vega One rocks my socks. I’ve used them in the past. Yum yum in my tum tum.

      • kissmybroccoli says:

You are too sweet, Chrystal! Thank you!! Yeah, I grew up in the country so I’ve been told that I have a pretty good southern accent, but I honestly don’t hear it…unless I’m tired…or I’ve been drinking…not that I would EVER do such things! πŸ˜‰

I was so happy with the way these came out…and it totally shocked the man-friend too that they had squash in them! I call that #winning! Lol

    12. karen says:

on my birthday I treat myself to Choc layer cake

    13. jodie says:

      You rocked that!!you’re adorable.

    14. Carolyn says:

Favorite cake: chocolate with loads of frosting!

    15. LOVE that video and LOVE your accent! πŸ˜‰

This little cupcake is SO cute, too! I think you need to start up a bakery where you serve all baked goods that are frosted with chocolate frosting and that have sprinkles. The cupcake is just as cute as my favorite donut! πŸ˜‰

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you Hannah! I could totally do the frosting and sprinkling, but I think I’d have to hire a baker to make the business work…and ensure I didn’t burn the shop down! 😯 Lol

    16. Kate Clark says:

Oh my goooodnesss the mini cakes look amazing, and how creative to use the squash! I MUST try the recipe when I get home. I love Greek yogurt! It has become so much fun to use in so many different recipes for me, I bake with it a lot and it brings such a great moister. Happy Birthday and thank you so much for all of these wonderful opportunities!! (:

    17. Eric says:

      You’re famous!

    18. You are too cute for words! Love that video! I miss yogurt…

The cake looks perfect! I need that now!

    19. Nicole M. says:

I always thought I was a red velvet girl for the longest time, but now I’m OBSESSED with anything spiced. So carrot cake or spice cake it is! Yummy!

    20. Alex says:

Love the pictures! and i like chocolate cake πŸ™‚

    21. Caitlin says:

I love CARROT CAKE! When I was little I used to order slices of it at my fave deli and then only eat the icing. Yeah, annoying kid I was. Now I love it ALL.

    22. Kelsey says:

      I love CARROT CAKE! MMMM…

    23. Jada says:

These giveaways are killing me. So good.

I am a chocolate cake girl. I also love vanilla/yellow cake with chocolate frosting!

    24. Rachel says:

Cute video!!!! I would love to try the coconut greek yogurt!

    25. Do you peel the kabocha, or leave the skin on?

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Good question! I need to add that to the recipe…I left the peel on! Since it’s thin enough, it broke down just fine in the food processor! πŸ™‚

    26. Dolly says:

      Carrot cake for sure!

    27. JessW says:

      Ice cream cake!

    28. Kaylin says:

Favorite kind of cake is vanilla bean bourbon cake. πŸ™‚

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow, that sounds delicious! I think you should come make it for me tomorrow! πŸ˜‰

        • Kaylin says:

Haha, thank you! Wish I could bake it up and ship it to you! And congrats on your famous-ness in the video! Very exciting opportunity for you. πŸ™‚

    29. OMG you look and sound SO fabu in that video!!!

Cake? Um, yes please. Can that be my answer?
Coconut cake. Or any cake. Please!!!

And I want and entire case of the coconut yo please!

    30. Amy says:

      Chocolate for the win!

    31. I love kabocha, Greek yogurt, and cake

    32. Happy early birthday!! Cakes look delicious!

    33. I was so hoping that when you posted the happy birthday pic for KMB with the cupcake that you were going to have a recipe to go with it.

Heather, I just wanted to say I loved watching that video. Your voice and accent are so sweet. It has made me love you and your blog all the more. I love hearing bloggers on video for the first time, I think you get a feel for the person more and they never sound like you expect them too. I wonder what people think I sound like?

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, thank you so much, Nikki! You are the absolute SWEETEST!! <3 I feel the same way...and it's so weird to me how, without even realizing it, I imagine everyone to sound a certain way...and they almost always sound completely different in real life! Ha!

    34. Yaz says:

Ah the video from your Yoplait experience is great! The frosting is such a good idea, so easy to make and good for you πŸ™‚

I also love that amazing curly orange candle haha.

Favourite cake… has to be a big, fat, decadent chocolate fudge cake!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you! And I know, isn’t that candle adorable?! It (along with 3 different colored ones) cost as much as about 4 packs of regular candles, but I just had to have it! Lol

    35. well i haven’t made these yet so things might change, but seriously i love fun-fetti cake. it’s always been a favorite and i swear my wedding cake will be that!

    36. Alison Gay says:

I have never been a huge fan of yoplait but after watching the video I think there is potential that I could convert!!! Especially if I use yoplait to make frosting to put on tope of kabocha CAKE!!! Yummy!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Before trying the blended Greek, I’ll admit that I was never really a fan, but seriously girl, their coconut flavor makes me weak in the knees! It even has shreds of coconut inside! And I swear they’re not paying me to say that! Lol

    37. You know what would be good on this as a topping? Your cranberry sauce. Sooooo good!

    38. natasha says:

Chocolate plus kabocha….drooling! Haven’t tried the Yoplait blends but like the light n fit ones so I”m sure these are awesome too (:

    39. Jeanne says:

      Vanilla with sprinkles!

    40. Favorite cake: Carrot, hands down!

    41. Angela says:

Oh my goodness I never imagined your voice like that! You have a really nice voice – you should do vlogs more often!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, really? Thank you! I’ll think about it…to be honest, I’m so critical of how I sound, that it usually takes me like FIFTEEN takes to post a vlog! Haha!

    42. Aw I loved that video! This recipe makes me wish my stomach wasn’t hating on Greek yogurt right now, but at least I have my kabocha!

    43. Emily says:

Love love love German Chocolate Cake!

    44. Katie says:

My fav kind of cake is DEF carrot cake! Love the frosting

    45. Elizabeth Heisz says:

First of all, I love your website and all your weird concoctions. They are so creative and I absolutely love experimenting with food (I want to own a bakery with my cousin after college). Second of all, my favorite cake is my mom’s chocolate chip cake with a caramel glaze and chocolate frosting. Not so healthy, but totally worth it πŸ™‚

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you SO much, Elizabeth! You are too sweet! That is so cool about the plan for the bakery…hopefully you can sell some strange but good goodies! And WOW! That cake sounds absolutely amazing…you had me at chocolate chip, but then I about fell out of my chair after I read “caramel glaze”! Gahhhh! Where is the heart-eyed emoticon when you need it?! Lol

    46. Cassie says:

      Happy birthday!!! xo

    47. Cassie says:

OH and I almost forgot – I love yellow cake with chocolate frosting. But I also HAVE to try your kabocha cakes and donuts… I just can’t find kabocha ANYWHERE.

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Cassie! I’ve found kabocha at Whole Foods but it can be a bit pricey. If you have any international markets around you, those are the best places to look…though sometimes they hide under the mistaken identity of a buttercup squash! And just in case you don’t know, the difference is that kabochas are squatty (with flat bottoms) where buttercups have a little knobby booty! πŸ˜‰

    48. MY MAN FOODIE HAS THE BIGGEST BONER RIGHT NOW?! LMFAO – OKAY now that was the weirdest comment EVER! I saw your donuts last week, PINNED THEM because I AM TOTALLY MAKING THEM – and now this, what are you doing to me!! AH HA HA! I will have to blue balls my inner man foodie though because I need to buy these ingredients FIRST.
**Mildly inappropriate comment – you can certainly delete it if you do not approve!**

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well, I have to say you definitely get the award for the corniest porniest comment ever, but I’m sincerely flattered! I really hope you’re able to make the donuts…I’d love to hear what you think of them! πŸ™‚

    49. heather says:

German chocolate cake is my very fav.

    50. Carly says:

      mmm; fav cake? cheesecake(:

    51. OMG, you are too cute in that video!! I love your southern accent too!! Looks like you had a fun time! πŸ™‚
      Happy Birthday!!!

    52. Anie U says:

German chocolate, carrot, pudding poke, red velvet, angel food….I can’t pick just one!

    53. Olivia says:

You are so cute- your voice is adorable! That cake is also adorable! My favourite kind of cake? I can’t decide between chocolate, carrot, cheese (as in cheesecake lol) or fruit cake (the fruit cake has to be spread with butter- try it and thank me ;)) And I will not include ice cream cake because that is also awesome and will just mudddle up the decision making- it must remain in its ice cream category- also here is a trick for an Amazing ice cream cake: take vanilla ice cream slightly melt it and mix with lots of your favourite candy and even breakfast cereal, (Lindt balls, milky ways, snickers, Caramel chocolates, smarties, and cornflakes are all particularly good additions!) and then refreeze in a rectangular cake tin until set- so very good! Xo cutie πŸ˜‰

      • kissmybroccoli says:

OMG!! Mind = BLOWN!!! You’re a genius…I have to try that with the ice cream!! I love that you put the ice cream cake in a category to itself…haha! And you know, I’ve actually never had fruit cake before. I love dried fruit, but I’m not a fan of those sugary gummy things, but I did catch myself drooling over one that Emeril made once that was DRENCHED in bourbon! What can I say…I’m a sucker for boozy foods! πŸ˜‰

    54. Ellyn says:

Ahhh that video is so cool!! That cake sounds kind of amazing. I really love homemade cakes. Especially microwave mug cakes. Yum!

    55. Laura says:

      I love red velvet cake!

    56. Andrea M says:

My favorite kind of cake is chocolate cherry πŸ™‚

    57. Min says:

You are a natural in front of the camera! So cool πŸ˜‰ I absolutely adore Kabocha (I’ve been eating it almost everyday..simply roasted). However, I’ve never thought of making a cake out of it. So creative you are.

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you, Min! I didn’t feel like a natural…I swear my knees were knocking the ENTIRE time! Haha! And really, I surprised myself when the idea for the cake came to me…and SO grateful that it came out like I hoped!

    58. Fabulous video Heather! And happy birthday girl! Going to blend 14?

    59. Girl. You are gorgeous gorgeous, gorgeous!!! I looove the video!
Paired with these cakes…..oh yes. I just hope I’ll find some more kabocha, it’s slowly flakong from the markets πŸ™
And the frosting – I love it, I always smother my oats with frosting like that.
      Pinned it!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, my friend! I actually thought of you when I topped these with the yogurt since you’re always gushing about your love of “chocolatized quark” πŸ˜‰

    60. AH! I love that video!! And I think this is my favorite recipe you’ve ever made!:) LOVE IT! You’re the cutest thing! My favorite kind of cake is coconut cream:) I love that your cake aired the same day as my Miniature Coconut Cream Cakes I just made:) Obviously, mini cakes are where it’s at, don’t ya think?:) Thanks for the giveaway!:)

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Awwwww! Seriously, Heather, my head is SO big right now! Haha! Thank you!! And your coconut cream cakes sound amazing…as do the peanut butter cookie sandwiches! It’s funny, the man-friend and I were just talking about that monk fruit stuff the other day but this is the first I’ve seen of it on the blogs…I’m definitely curious to try it now!

And ps, mini ANYTHING is where it’s at! #socute πŸ˜‰

    61. Kristen says:

I love better than sex cake!

    62. Samantha says:

You’re so cute! Hahaha! I didn’t picture you with an accent, too funny! I’d have to say my favorite kind of cake is red velvet, yum!

    63. Missy says:

I love chocolate Reese’s cheesecake with an Oreo crust from Cheesecake Factory

    64. Hmmm favorite cake? That’s a tough one as I am not a huge cake fan!!! But your kabocha cake sounds AMAZING! I’d have to go with lemon cake or ice cream cake!!

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, I’m not much of a cake person either, but I could totally get behind an ice cream cake…well, if I had plenty of dairy pills that is! πŸ˜‰

    65. Keira says:

I’m an odd ball and love carrot cake:3 particularly with raisins.

    66. You are famous!! πŸ™‚ So glad that you are my friend so I can say I know someone famous. πŸ˜‰ This recipe looks to die for my friend. Can I come over for leftovers???

      • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks lady! And sure…there just so happens to be two more in the freezer and I think you’re name is on one of them! πŸ˜‰

    67. Samantha says:

Should the winner have received an email? Maybe it’s just someone with the same name!! Haha
