Music Monday: The Chillax Edition

Music soothes the soul.

I am a firm believer in this. Music is a powerful thing and without it, life would be very very different. For me, music is a lot of things, but lately, it’s been my reprieve, an escape from life’s craziness where everything slows down…even if it’s only on the drive to work. Without even realizing it, I’ve been trading my toe-tapping, knee-slapping, get up and DAYance beats, for melodies that help soothe my tired toes, warm my knee bones, and make me wanna get down…and sleep! And if I can’t sleep? Well, I’ll just stare into space and DAYdream. Lol

There are MANY songs I love winding down to, but today, I’m narrowing it down to the tunes I’ve not been able to get out of my head since I’ve been sampling a few of new playlists on Spotify…

Fade Into You by Mazzy Star

I know this is an oldie, but it’s definitely a goodie and actually one that I’d forgotten about until I stumbled over it on a Throwback Thursday playlist. That was just last week and I swear I’ve played it at least a half dozen times.

Karma Police by Radiohead

I’ve never really thought of myself as a Radiohead fan…well, except when I was belting out “Creep” as lead singer in my Rockband back in 2007. It’s another one from the 90’s and I know there are probably more than a few of you out there who were just being born around that time, but seriously, just listen to it.

Wait by M83

Now this is a band that’s been around for over a dozen years…but I am only now discovering them thanks to a couple of recent movie soundtracks they’ve been involved in. This particular song showed up in The Fault in Our Stars and has been one of my loves since my ol’ pal Google hooked us up.

Arsonist’s Lullabye by Hozier

Another newly discovered artist. I know EVERYONE knows “Take Me to Church” but have you listened to anything else by Hozier?
Because seriously, his stuff rocks! Love that soulful voice! Oh and FYI, he’s “pretty sure” it’s his name is pronounced “Ho-ZEE-er”…unless you’re in France and then it’s “Ho-zee-AY”. 😆

Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars

Like sweet sweet medicine to the ears. I’ve loved The Civil Wars for years. Let’s just pretend they didn’t break up five months ago and get carried away by the soothing sound of John and Joy.

My Favorite Faded Fantasy by Damien Rice

Such a beautiful song. Really, thre just aren’t any words.

Feels Like We Only Go Backwards by Tame Impala

This song. I nearly pulled off the side of the interstate the other day just so I could figure out who this was on Spotify. Luckily…I had a passenger/DJ assistant to lend a hand…to my ear. Careful, I just realized that video may induce seizures. 😉

Inside Out by Spoon

I came across a couple of Spoon albums while “shopping” for free music at the library a year or so ago, but never really looked into them until they started popping up on some of my music suggestions. No way you can listen to this song and not start bobbing your head. And this video might help calm your visual senses after the last one…though you’ll probably feel like you’re on drugs.

Hunger of the Pine by Alt-J

I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before, but hell, I’ll say it again, I rarely know what dear ol’ Joe is saying, but I would listen to him sing songs about paint drying. This of course is only ONE of my favorite songs off their new album, This Is All Yours. I even forgive them for including some sampling from Miley Cyrus.

Elevate by St. Lucia

While I could go on and on, I think I’ll end it today with this little gem. One of those songs that I fell in love with months ago seconds after hitting play. Hopefully it brings some love to your Monday…and the rest of your week!

What’s one of your favorite “chill” songs?

Highlights from the weekend?
You know I had to work…allow me to live vicariously.

Foodie Friday: The Surprise Edition

Hey hey HAAAAAAY!

So I know I’m just randomly popping in on a Friday afternoon with this post, but after rounding up my collection of foodie goodies that I’ve accumulated over the last few days, I just couldn’t wait any longer to share…especially after I stumbled over a Trader Joe’s yesterday while I was road-tripping to visit some family! Woop WOOP!

But don’t let me get ahead of myself, because the first bit of excitement started with these babies which I spotted at Kroger while prowling the cereal aisle for sales (hey, this cereal killer has a lifestyle to maintain!)…

Foodie Friday - Cookie Butter

Praise be to the cookie gods!!

Seriously? Kroger knocked it out of the park with these guys! Totally blows the vanilla cookie and almond cookie spreads out of the water! In ranking order of deliciousness: crispy chocolate, cookies & creme, and coconut macaroon (which I knew would bring me to my knees before even breaking the seal!). Do yourself a favor and grab up one or ALL THREE of these….and then hide them in strategic locations. Like your car? Your locker/desk at work? Your pants pocket?? 😉

Believe it or not, when I ventured out to the grocery stores (yes, that would be plural), I did have a mission. After Melissa used Snapchat-teased me without end of her glorious Greek yogurt finds earlier this week, I knew I needed to get my hands on some of those flavors…

Foodie Friday - Greek Yogurt

Behold the Three Pillars of Yo!

While I didn’t manage to track down the Chobani green tea or the Yoplait vanilla chai (I know, WHAT?!) flavors, I did come home with all of these: Chobani Blended concord grape, Yoplait Greek cinnamon roll and Greek 100 Whips strawberry cheesecake, Siggi’s blood orange, Oikos Triple Zero coconut creme, Oikos Traditional apple pie and caramel macchiato, and two Oikos Caramel on Top (bananas foster and caramel macchiato) which are not new per se, but I’ve been eyeing them for a while and finally decided to break down and get ’em.

I haven’t tried any of the flavors just yet because I seriously can’t decide which one to try first! Also, and I say this with a very bashful sideways glance to the floor, I still have a couple of pumpkin flavors to try from my last hoard!

Foodie Friday - Pumpkin Yogurt

I know, I can’t help it…it’s like, what if it’s the best thing ever and I’ll never be able to find it again?! #foodieproblems

Anyway, moving on to things I HAVE tried…

Foodie Friday - GNC - Bar Sale

Remember these guys?

Well, I toted a Combat Crunch Bar and that GNC Lean Bar with me for yesterday’s road trip and oh my god you guys, the cookie dough Combat bar tastes like CANDY! I got more of a caramel than a cookie dough flavor, but believe me, I’m not complaining. The consistency reminds me of the crunch layer inside a Pure Protein Crunch bar if you’ve ever tried it…if not, kinda like a cross between Rice Krispies and Grape Nuts cereals. As for the Lean Bar, I was a tad disappointed. At first, it had that blueberry muffin flavor I was imagining, but then it kinda turned into, “did I just like a Yankee candle?” A little waxy and with an aftertaste of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Foodie Friday - Quest Chips

I also tried the cheddar and sour cream Quest Chips a couple of days ago. The flavor is pretty good, but the texture is definitely “different”. Unlike air popped/baked chips I’ve had in the past, these are SUPER thin and almost could dissolve on your tongue…kinda like rice paper. I dipped them in some hummus to up the satiety factor and called it done. Definitely more of a combination food than a stand alone snack. That being said, I’ll give you two guesses as to how I’m gonna use those BBQ chips!

I’m bringing sexy strange back! 😉

Foodie Friday - Trader Joe's

Now, let’s talk about my boyfriend Joe!

I didn’t think we’d have time to pop in with our schedule running a bit tight, but with a fifteen minute window of opportunity AND a chance to use the bathroom (because even with being in the car all day, I still managed THREE of my camelbak bottles of water!), I practically jumped out of the car before it was in park!

After consulting the running Trader Joe’s list on my phone (what, you don’t have one of those? See it on Instagram, drool over it, add it to the list!) and noting that I didn’t need any of my TJ’s essentials, I knew what I needed to do. First, I grabbed up a package of Turkish Smyrna figs (the BEST dried figs they sell and were out of the last time I visited). Then I went back for another while I contemplated wiping the entire shelf clean. I spotted the cookies & creme cookie butter but since Kroger already fulfilled my cookie fantasies for the month, I decided to hold off. I looked for peanut butter baking chips, but sadly they were out of those. So next, I made my way over to the refrigerated section…but only after I got “squirreled” by those Kumato tomatoes. They’re brown you guys. Brown tomatoes. I couldn’t help my curiosity…even if they were four bucks.

Ok, onto the cold stuffs! The beet hummus and a LONG time fave, chicken dogs were the last things on my list so after that, I was left with five minutes to loiter in the cheese section. You guys need to be proud of me right now. Like for reals. Because I wanted FIVE but only came home with two: caramelized onion cheddar and Italian truffle cheddar…because I can never say no to truffleNEVER!

Disclaimer: I was not paid to review any of the products mentioned in this post. Hell, half of the companies don’t even know me.

What foodie goodies have surprised you this week?

Where did you go on your last road trip?

Thinking Out Loud: Why So Blue??

I don’t always think of myself as a writer.

Heck, if you told High School Heather…or even College Heather that she would one day start a blog and spend a big percentage of her life writing…for FUN…she’d have slapped you silly. Still, most days, I consider myself more of an artist. An artist who cleverly arranges and REarranges words until her little perfectionist eye is content. I’m sure there are a lot of bloggers out there who can just sit down and pump (I seriously just started to type pumpkin) out paragraph upon paragraph of enlightenment, and there are very odd occasions that I get a moment of clarity like that, but I confess that most of my ideas are sparked by my visual senses.

Whether it be a recipe post (what are THOSE??) or a random update post, I like to look through my photos for a bit until all of a sudden…

EUREKAAAAA!*

*Please tell me I’m not the only one with the theme to Eureka’s Castle stuck in my head. Please tell me at least ONE of you know what I’m even talking about!

Work Selfie

Obligatory sassy selfie after registering for Blend 2015 on Sunday Night. I may or may not have been on the clock when I did it. I may or may not have illegally worn my Blend 2012 t-shirt instead of a scrub top. I may or may not give a shit about any of that because…

I’M GOING TO BLENNNNNNND!!!

Who’s coming with me…to the land of mountains, microbreweries, and minor changes in your ability to taken in oxygen which I could swear make you get drunk faster…even though it’s all just a myth (ie, high altitude)???

Camelbak Water

My faithful Camelbak. Ya know, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day I wake up with it permanently affixed to my hand. I’m more than a little proud of myself for upping my water intake in recent weeks…I’ve been averaging FOUR of these a day! 😯

Park Sunset

The AMAZING sunset that I got to witness after a fantastic walk at the park in SIXTY FOUR DEGREE (that would be ~18ºC) weather! Oh if only every week could start out this way. I woke up a bit earlier than planned on Monday afternoon (remember, I go to bed around 8am), but after seeing how beautiful it was outside, I had my SHORTS on and sneakers laced within minutes.

Book - Park Reading

And hey, I finally…excuse me… I FINALLY finished my book! Yep, and I only had to check it out THREE times…the last time selecting the large print copy to help boost my slow reader self-esteem a bit. I swear I flew through the last half of the book. Hmm, maybe I’m onto something here… 😉

Quest Cookies & Cream #chunkporn

A moment of awe. Yep, I’m talking about that moment when you unwrap a Quest bar and are face-to-face with some mouth-watering #chunkporn and there is no one around to help you appreciate it. No way you’re not sharing that! The moment…not the bar…
get cho own, beeeeetches! 😛

Scrambled Egg Sandwich & Veggies

A simple dinner at home after a lonnnnng day of errand running. May not look like much, but I’m telling you, I’ve been craving this scrambled egg (with lettuce and mayo…yes, you read that right) sandwich for over a WEEK! There’s just something so mentally and physically satisfying about squashing a craving after that long. Amiright?

GNC - Bars & Quest Chips

The fruit of my labor. Hey, just because I said I had a lot of errand-running to do, doesn’t mean I can’t get a little something out of it. GNC must’ve known when they lured me in with they buy three get one free sale. Yeah, I know…I really needed more bars. And those Quest chips. And that cute little PINK pill box! But hey, I gave myself props for getting out there under $40! 😀

Thinking-Out-Loud

Now be sure to hop on over to Spoons, give my girl Amanda (who is going to Blend!) a shout, and see who else is indulging in a bit of randomness this week! Maybe it will be Purple Yellow Red AND BLUE! 😉

If you could assign ONE color to this week, what would it be and why?

Who’s coming to Blend with me?!
