FOOD Things

Hey guys!

I hope you are all having a fantastic week!

The other day, I was thumbing…er, clicking? through some pics on my computer and I realized that there have been quite a few things that have slipped under the radar lately…I also realized that it’s been a while since I’ve done a “things” post…hmm, how convenient that it’s Thursday! 😉

1. Ethiopian Food

A few weeks ago, I met up with Allie in Nashville for my very first Ethiopian food experience. She suggested I try one of the sampler platters (which was a great idea since I was having such a hard time choosing) so I ordered the meat and veggie sampler…which came out on a platter HALF the size of our table!

Starting at the top, left-right:
Salad, cabbage, beets with goat cheese, ground beef, lamb, chicken, split peas, chicken and carrots, and some of THE BEST collard greens I’ve ever eaten!

And a big mess of bread to gather it all up with!

Pretty sure Ethiopian is now one of my TOP favorite cuisines…I’ve been dreaming of it since that afternoon and can’t WAIT to go back!

Hint, hint…wink, wink, Allie! 😉

2. Weird Food

If you’ve been reading my blog long, you already know about my weird food tendencies, but do you know of my LOVE for BBQPB&J?

The latest #weirdfoodclub submission:
Steamed spaghetti squash mixed with peanut flour and topped with BBQ seasoning, FROG jam, and fresh figggggggggggs!

3. Mystery Food

On a trip to the Nashville farmer’s market a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a little label-less melon/fruit/thing at the international food store and well, I figured my chances of understanding the man behind the counter should ask my dumb American questions were pretty slim, so I just took my chances…

It was DELICIOUS!

Soft and squishy and sweet with hard (but edible) seeds…any ideas?

4. Kryptonic Food

I had my first Pinkberry experience a few weeks ago…chocolate hazelnut and gingerbread swirl topped with dark chocolate drops, granola, and gingersnap cook
ie crumbs.

Tasty AND pretty (thank you Mr. Fro-yo man) but I still prefer my Sweet Cece’s and their wall-to-wall, help-yourself-but-break-the-bank toppings! 😉

And as of yesterday, the battle is on…my co-workers have officially started in on the Christmas baking…and if there is ONE thing that breaks my willpower, it’s a FREE cookie!

Let’s hope there won’t be as much  “swinkling” as there was last year! 😉

5. Pictures of Food

Just aren’t happening!

My work schedule has been CRAZY this week, so unfortunately, Nikki and I just haven’t had the time to properly bond. I have tried snapping a few pictures, but they’re just not coming out right. Eventually, I’ll have time to sit down and really get to know my new little girl, but until then, I have a 4 hour training seminar (on my day off), a hot date ;), and a fun-filled birthday weekend planned…

So you’ll forgive me if we post-pone Pancake Sunday for another week?

Promise I’ll share at least a few details from my date! 😉

And speaking of birthdays…be sure to enter KMB’s birthday giveaway if you haven’t already! A FULL case of Chobani to ONE lucky winner!

Giveaway ends at midnight tonight!

Have you had any new, weird, mysterious, or kryptonic food lately?

  1. I LOVE Ethiopian food too – it’s in my top 3 fav cuisines. That weird little fruit looks like a guava! Was it kind of sour/tart like a pink grapefruit?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well, it’s been a few weeks, but I think I remember it being a little tart but not as sour as a grapefruit. I’ve had a guava before that was as large as a grapefruit and was green on the outside…or at least I thought it was a guava. Hmm, maybe not!

  2. I remember eating those little fruits in Mexico and loving them! I think they’re guavas, but I could be wrong.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Nope, sounds like that’s what everyone else is thinking too…wait, yep, I just Googled yellow guavas! That’s what it was! Good to know because I’ve had a green one before and wasn’t really a fan :-/

  3. Hot date??!! Exciting!! 🙂
I saw a vegetable in the supermarket a few days ago it looked like a dark parsnip. Uh? No idea what that was. I am jealous that you guys have a cookie battle. I work in a ‘men-team’ so I can forget about free cookies except I bake them myself, haha! 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hmm, was it still white? Maybe it was a daikon radish? I can’t bake cookies…they never make it to the oven! Lol

  4. That fruit kind of looks like yellow passion fruit. Not sure of that actually exists though.

You have to try Bangladeshi food next!

  5. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ethiopian food!!! We don’t have a restaurant where I live, but any chance I get, I dive face-first into one of those platters. The fig/spaghetti squash combo looks surprisingly tasty too. I love all the components, so why not?

And the mystery fruit! I’m pretty sure Sam is right, it looks like some variety of guava, which are some of the BEST fruits out there! Jealous!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Really? Most people think I’m a freak with the BBQ seasoning, but I just love the sweet/salty/smokey combo! haha! And yep, I Googled it…it was a yellow guava! I didn’t think about it because I only tried the big green ones, but good to know since I wasn’t really a fan of those!

  6. Caitlin F. says:

I just tried that fruit last week! No idea what it is, but it tasted like some sort of guava/passion fruit hybrid. Yum.

  7. They are definitely guavas. 🙂 In Texas I could get them frozen!

I have had my camera forEVER and still hardly know how to use it. I’ve pretty much given up on my lighting situation.

My little sister and I were finally going to go get Ethiopian food when we were in DC a few weekends ago–it is the BEST place to get it I hear–but because we are who we are, we forgot to bring change to pay the meters and couldn’t park and, well, there was just a comedy of errors. I have always wanted to eat it, especially the injera bread.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh nooooo! But you were so close! Oh my gosh, the injera is AMAZING! I swear I could make a meal off of that and the sauce the chicken was in! Lol

You have a Canon, right? I was always really comfortable with mine because it was so much like my point-and-shoot, but the Nikon is like completely backwards! And for some reason, every time I take a picture, it comes out with a reddish tint that no amount of photo editing can correct! Grrrr!

Oh and yep! Definitely guavas…just Googled it! 😀

  8. Lou says:

    Hot date!?! You go girl!

  9. I’ve always wanted to try Ethiopian food but I’ve never had the chance. I don’t even know if we have an Ethiopian restaurant in my city… I need to try to track one down!

I haven’t tried any new or weird foods lately, but my candy cane chocolate chunk ice cream is definitely kryptonic!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow, sounds like it! I was never a big fan of peppermint until just recently…and it is the one thing (other than peanut butter) that can get me to like the taste of chocolate!

  10. No new, weird, or mysterious foods in my life lately (I live dangerously 😉 ), but chunky homemade applesauce and Hershey’s kisses have definitely been my kryptonite. I think I’m going through about 3 apples a day in how much applesauce I’ve been eating, and bags of kisses have been vanishing faster than I care to admit.

  11. Julie says:

    I had Ethiopian food. Wasn’t a fan.

  12. bb and I have a special ethiopian place here in the city. Come to NYC and date with me! The teff bread is sooo good for you. Reminds me of my former love – sourdough but so much better/healthier.
We even have this awesome $30 all you can eat vegan ethiopian dinners complete with coffee ceremony and music. It is awesome. Rivals our restaurant. They have the best red lentils and this avocado, tomato, and sunflower dish thats incredible – all served with bread.
    Have I convinced you yet??

weird food front – I just posted a cranberry orange white bean hummus recipe – sounds kind of weird to most but it came out banging. I brought it to work at lulu and everyone liked it 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Convinced? I’ve practically bought my plane ticket already!!! Holy Hay-seuss does that sound delicious! And I had no idea that the teff bread was so good for you…oh yeah, I’m TOTALLY convinced! 😀

Cranberry orange hummus? Omg, marry me!!

  13. Lol…yep guava. My grandma mails me them from Puerto Rico >.<

  14. I haven’t had any weird or exotic food recently, maybe I should change that!

  15. I have been dying to try Ethiopian food for the longest time! I just need to find an Ethiopian restaurant near me…

  16. Allie says:

You KNOW we’re going back–and soon! I don’t need much of an excuse to get myself there 😉 I want more beets, fish faces and injera!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Heck yeah! And I may even order my own fish face this time…as long as I get some of those beets and collard greens! 😀

  17. Yep Ethiopian food is sweet. Some of the best seasoned dishes.

  19. I actually don’t like Ethiopian food that much, but I have to admit that, whether I like it or not, it is pretty cool! There’s not really any other cuisine like it.
