The Story of How I Became a Kombucha-Brewing Master

…of the WORRRRRRRRLD!

*insert one-eyed tongue out emoji here*

We all have things in life we want to learn…simple things from sewing on a button to more complex activities such as unearthing the mystery of IKEA’s furniture assembly instructions…but no matter the trade, there’s always a fair amount of intimidation in the beginning….the fear of the unknown. That’s exactly how I felt about kombucha-brewing until just a couple of months ago.

I’d been told that home brewing was incredibly easy and how ANYBODY could do it, but,  well I’ve also been told that it’s next to impossible to kill a mint plant…and we all know how that turned out. Honestly, I never really looked into it (probably the same reason I’ve yet to learn anything about canning), but I was always convinced that I’d just mess it up…or worse, make myself sick! 😯

Delicious Probiotic Drinks Cookbook

So you can IMAGINE my excitement when Julia, my long-time girl crush, contacted me to see if I’d be interested in reviewing her newest cookbook, Delicious Probiotic Drinks (available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble), which contains not only well laid out instructions for how to brew your own kombucha, but also a TON of other good-for-your-gut drinks as well!

Delicious Probiotic Drinks by Julia Mueller
As soon as it arrived, I did what I ALWAYS do with cookbooks: flip through each and every page annnnnd…look at all the pretty pictures, decide I want to make EVERYTHING, overwhelm myself, and put it away. The only thing that was standing between me and the start of my kombucha-brewing greatness was getting my hands on a SCOBY (aka “the mother” as in “the mutha-trucka running this show”…or ya know, a “Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast”). 😉

Kombucha SCOBYMarilyn in the buff! 😯

There are THREE ways to obtain a SCOBY:
1. Make your own from a bottle of store-bought kombucha.
2. Purchase a dehydrated one online and rehydrate it at home.
3. Beg a friend to have sympathy for your timidity and share hers.

Obviously, since I didn’t even think I could successfully make my FIRST brew, starting from scratch was COMPLETELY out of the question. And well, when it came down to it, I was too worried about “wasting my money” (you know all those dolla dolla bills that I throw wildly in the air each and every time I step foot in a Whole Foods) to buy one online. So there I sat…SCOBY-less.

Until something AMAZING happened…

While catching up with a coworker, she took out a jar of pink-colored liquid and took a sip…just before telling me that it was her latest batch of strawberry kombucha! My look of awe and admiration must’ve been apparent because she then went on to tell me (just like everyone else) that it was SUPER easy and that I should do it too. My slight hesitation was met with an offer to have a SCOBY in my hands by the next day. What?!

Scoby in a Jar

I wept tears of fermented joy.

The next day, the clock started. I knew I didn’t have long. As soon as I was off for the week, I reread each line of Julia’s instructions AND because I’m a visual learner, You-Tubed some videos on home-brewing until I felt like I had grown some cojones psyched myself up. I went to the store to purchase the handful of ingredients I needed and back at the house, I went to work. Excluding the time it took for the tea to come to room temperature, the initial brewing honestly took me about 15 minutes…

Kombucha Brewing CollageAnd the rest is history!

As of today, I’m working on my THIRD batch and with each batch I brew, I feel like I’m getting better and better! Most information out there will say that the whole process should take 5-7 days, but it really depends on your personal taste preferences. My first batch was still pretty sweet (my sister thought it tasted like regular tea) so I ended up letting it go almost a whole week more before harvesting, taste-testing along the way until I liked the flavor. And my last batch went 9 days because I got busy. See? No pressure! FYI: The longer it brews, the more sugar “Big Mama SCOBY” eats…so the more acidic/vinegary it will taste. After the week or so, you can harvest the kombucha and put it in the fridge or you can do a secondary (flavoring) fermentation which will only take 2-3 more days. I really like the taste of plain kombucha, but it’s been fun playing around with all sorts of flavors. Just remember to peel those citrus fruits! Lol

So there ya have it folks…how I conquered my fears…an unexpected love story…from zero to hero Kombucha GODDESS in less than 1000 words FIVE WEEKS! 😉 Now that I’m feeling confident, I’m ready to take on the challenge of making more of Julia’s recipes for probiotic drinks…ginger beer, here I come!

Moral of the story: Don’t be a weenie like me.

But wait!! There’s a bonus to the story…an epilogue if you will 😉 Julia is offering one lucky KMB reader a copy of her book for FREE! And there are no crazy hoops to jump through. And? She’ll ship to ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!!! Are you excited?!

Marvelous Endings & Beginnings

Happy Monday, loves!

I hope you all had a fantastical weekend full of everything your mind and body needed! Like I mentioned in yesterday’s post, the beginning of June definitely took me by surprise, but as I look back on the weekend, I realize there couldn’t have been a better way to end one month and begin another…of course I’d have to say it was pretty marvelous! 😀

After a successful trip to the farmers’ market (as in I didn’t come home with fourteen bajillion things), I made it to the gym, got another much-needed massage, and treated myself to the best nap EVER! Then…? It was time to get together with the besties!

Selfie with Besties - Ladies Night

And just as we brought IN the month, we rang out May in style!

We used to have the hardest time getting all three of us together, but thanks to a change in jobs for one of them, the weekends are free and clear…and you have no idea how incredibly happy that makes me! There’s already a plan to get together again in TWO WEEKS!

Ladies Night - Wine & CheeseA little after 7pm, we clinked our first glasses. And while bestie #1 uncovered a tray of the most delicious tuna salad (with added sesame seeds!) bites, bestie #2 was digging out surprising us with presents…more coasters to add to the collection! I about lost it when I flipped through them and found the one on the top right…just like the towel I was kicking myself for not buying at wine fest!

As the girls settled in, sipping their glasses of Cajunfest, I set to work on a little cheese spread. Three of the five were part of my Atlanta haul from back in April (I may or may not have had to scrape off some blue parts…eh, a little extra penicillin never killed anyone!) along with a few others from the illustrious “cheese drawer” (clockwise from the top left): Cantealet, mozzarella, blue shropshire, bruschetta Jack, and blueberry stilton (the favorite of the night)! I also toasted up some whole wheat pita bread that I scored off the bargain bakery rack for just 80 CENTS!

We chatted up into the wee hours of the night, reliving old memories and catching each other up on all the latest gossip. Time flew by so quickly (as it often does) that I didn’t even realize it was nearly 2am by the time I said my last goodbye!

Obviously a good night with my girls is JUST what I needed for a kick of motivation to start a new month! I ended up staying up pretty late so I didn’t get started until around 2pm (hangover-free, might I add!), but once I got going, I couldn’t be stopped!

Food Prep - Farmer's Market Veggies & Cauliflower Pizza CrustsKnowing that I leave for Blend in only THREE SHORT DAYS, I knew I’d need to do some meal prep if I wanted to keep all of my fingers get through all my perishables before Thursday, so I set to work…chopping, roasting, boiling, food processor-ing…until a little over an hour later when I had one impressive spread!

I even salvaged TWO MONTH old head of cauliflower and whipped up a few of Laura’s cauliflower pizza crusts…and yeah, I totally cut off the black parts…please see reference to penicillin made above! 😉

Cauliflower Art

There was even time to stop and admire some fine art! I think I see an amoebae! Oh snap, I’m an imaginative genius AND I made a rhyme! 😉

And to top it ALL off, I kicked off the month with one helluva cardio sesh! And guess what? The elliptical didn’t kick my ass! Actually, I went UP in the resistance a bit! Yay for progress…and selfies…and running into my therapist while I was a hot sweaty mess?!
😯 Uhhhh…

What was the most MARVELOUS thing from your weekend?

When’s the last time you ran into someone looking like a HOT MESS?

May: The Month of Music & Merriment

And just like that, it’s the FIRST day of June!

Wow, how the HECK did I let that happen? I swear I thought we had one more May day left, but well, obviously I was mistaken. Looks like my little “currently” post is gonna be a bit fashionably late this time around. I’ll just blame it on the shoes…it always comes down to the shoes! Which reminds me, I still need some heels to go with my dress for Blend! 😯

But for now, let’s get to recapping some May-ness!

Selfie

Starting things off with a little selfie action! I feel like most of the pics I’ve posted lately have shown me with the curly fro, but I have to say the few days I’ve taken the tiiiiiiiiiiime (because it does take a lot) to actually straighten my hair have been nice…and helped me appreciate how long it’s gotten! Still trying to decide if I’m ready to donate again or wait a bit…

Current Book:

I haven’t really been reading a lot lately…you know, since I’ve been busy becoming a wino, walking to Portugal, spoiling my mama, and learning to fly. BUT since I’ll be heading to Utah in FOUR DAYS for Blend, I decided I needed a little reading material for the flight so I picked up a Nora Roberts book while I was in the library the other day. It’s the first in the Bride Quartet which has been recommended to me several times.

Current Music:

I think it’s safe to say I’ve talked enough about music over the last month! But…aww, what’s one more? I mean, technically, it’s another month now…

And another Portugal. The Man album! 😉

Current Guilty Pleasure:

Hmm…does standing in the shampoo aisle for 2o minutes trying to decide on what brand/scent I wanted, wavering between the cheap stuff and finally deciding on two tiny bottles that cost more EACH than half the ones I started looking at? Yes, yes, I think it does! But hey, my hair smells ahhhhhh-mazing! 😉

Current Nail Color:

Nails - Ouch!

Allow me to be a lesson to ya folks…meal prep can save you both time AND your digits! After coming home from yoga a couple of weeks ago, I was starving! I decided to whip up a quick omelette and in my hurry, almost CUT MY FREAKING FINGER OFF! Oh but can I just say my nails look great, don’t they??

Current Entertainment:

Game of Thrones Season 3

Even though I’m a big…fat…weenie!

Current Wish/Needs:

Manageable heels for a 5 foot 7 inch clutz-burger. Size 9.5 (read: HUGE). Leopard print. Someone get on that for me before Thursday, mmkay?

Current Food:

Besides my current and everlasting pizza obsession (with feta mind you), I’ve become completely obsessed with froyo…

Yoplait Greek Cocoa-Coconut Froyo

But of the cheaper, tummy-friendly, do-it-yourself variety! For the last few weeks, my midnight snack of choice has been coconut flavored Yoplait Greek mixed with a spoonful of cocoa powder that I let freeze for a few hours before. So damn good!

Current Drink:

Kombucha

I think you guys all know the answer to that question! But FYI: Strawberry Lavender has been the best flavor YET!

Current Triumphs:

Becoming the kombucha-brewing MASTER OF THE WORRRRRLD!

Current Bane of Existence:

My garage door. It’s been broken for a month. And now I know how all the commoners feel who have to walk from their driveway to their front door and back every damn day…even when it rains. Boo!

Current Blogger Crush:

Do you guys know Julia? Ok, so I confess that this is more than a crush. I’ve kinda had a thing for this girl since September…when I was Googling pesto recipes and found her amazing Avocado Beet Pesto Sandwich. Her pictures, her humor…oh my gosh, it was love at first site sight! Just a little heads up, the story of our love will continue later in the week! 😉

Current Indulgence:

Frivolous farmers’ market spending annnnnnnd naps! After another trip to the market yesterday along with a few other errands, I came home and took an hour-long and woke up feeling like a whole new person!

Current Blessing:

Love. From friends, from family, from ourselves. It really is ALL we need! 😀

Current Outfit:

Blend Dresses Selfie

After taking HOURS to make a decision on my dress for Blend, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m just never wearing pants again!

Current Excitement:

Please search this post for the number of times “Blend” was mentioned. So excited to see everyone and ready to make some amazing memories!

Current Link:

Blend schedule of events!

Current Mood:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! <- that’s decipherable, right? 😉

What was your TRIUMPH from the month of May?

Who’s with me on the no-pants thing?
