WIAW: A Perfect IE Day

Hello my loves!

As I promised on Monday, I’ve got a day of eats to share with you,
but not just ANY day of eats…

What I Ate on a PERFECT IE Day

A PERFECT day of eats!

A big thank you goes out to Jenn, our soon to be mama to a baby chickpea GIRL!!!!, for throwing the most fabulous foodie party to hit blogworld,Β What I Ate Wednesday!

And now, ONTO THE FOOD!!

As I mentioned in Monday’s post, the man-friend was unexpectedly called into work early Saturday morning. Not really having anything big on the agenda to do anyway (think chilly windy weather), I decided it would be a fine day to just lounge around at his house Β in my PJ’s while catching up on some blog reading…and that is EXACTLY what I did!

What I didn’t realize until the end of the day was that since I was so relaxed and caught up in the lives of so many of my blogger friends, I never ONCE stopped to worry about macros, obsess over my cravings, or even check in with the Clean Your Plate Club!

Nope, I went ALL day only thinking about food as my body told me I was hungry and within minutes I just KNEW what I wanted!

And THIS is how the day went…

Egg 'n Oats

Oats cooked in almond milk, topped with a sunny-side up egg and cinnamon

Mmm, love me some sweet and savory!

Wheat Crisps w Mustard & Snap Peas w Ranch

Wheat crisps with mustard, snap peas with yogurt ranch dressing

Actually, it kinda all got mixed together as little mustard ranch pea bite thingies! πŸ˜‰

Orange Greek Yogurt

Crispbread dipped in yogurt that tastes just like a frickin’ creamsicle pop! πŸ˜€

Although the toasted coconut is still my fave.

Earl Grey Latte

Earl Grey almond milk latte x 2

Is it just me or does Earl Grey taste/smell like Fruit Loops?

Quest Bar w PB

Baked chocolate brownie Quest bar topped with crunchy peanut butter

Aka…HEAVEN!!!

Egg 'n Injera

Sunny-side up egg over leftover injera

Note to self: Buy teff flour and make injera…LOTS of it!

Un-pictured peppermint tea x 2

Whole Foods Salad

Whole Foods salad bar with everything but the kitchen sink.

Seriously, this thing was like ELEVEN BUCKS! 😯

And it actually fed me TWICE! I sat down to dinner, got my fill, and then a couple of hours later felt hungry again so I finished it off…which was about the time the man-friend FINALLY walked through the door…poor baby!

There was also plenty of water throughout the day…not sure how much since that’s not something I’m tracking anymore either, but I felt like my body had enough.

I was SO proud of myself at the end of the day! Not only did I feel like I was 100% in tune with my hunger cues, but I also felt completely satisfied with all of my meals! But before you go proclaiming me as Heather the Magnificent Intuitive Eater, you should know that the next day, I was utterly confused after breakfast! Lol! ALL a part of the process! πŸ˜€

What’s the BEST thing you ate yesterday?

What is your 3 must-have salad toppings?
A salad just isn’t a salad without some black olives, tomatoes, and CHEESE!

  1. All of your eats look so good, especially your salad! I love that your salad was more than $10, too! One of my weaknesses is making HUGE costly salads from Whole Foods’ salad bar. I love adding all kinds of toppings, especially artichoke hearts, roasted bell peppers, tomatoes, sprouts, marinated mushrooms, pearl onions, beets, chicken and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds or nuts. My husband always gives me a hard time for my expensive salads, but I love them!

  2. Woo hoo for an IE win! And OMG! I thought I was the only one who thought Earl Grey smelt like Fruit loops! I always get out the box of Earl Grey at work and walk around asking people ‘does this smell like fruit loops to you?’ and they just look at me weirdly! I’m finally not alone :’)
My must haves in a salad – Carrots (I eat so many of the things that I have an orange tinge in my hands – and yet I still eat them!), spinach and olives (preferarably the green ones with the little red thing inside). But I also love me some beetroot, pumpkin, the list is endless!

  3. Lucie says:

Wooot!! Yay for a great IE day! I am a fan of your oatmeal with the running egg. I am waiting for my Whole30 challenge to be over so I can re-include oats to my diet!
My salads need goat cheese, giant prawns and cherry tomatoes – as for the first 3. I could go on and on! πŸ™‚ (Ok. chickpeas, artichoke hearts, shredded Parmesan – yes twice cheese – sugarpeas and olives).
The BEST thing in this blog is that decadent looking Questbar! I definitely need to order a batch of the babies!!

  4. Yummmm. Some serious yolk porn going on in that post haha!
Looks so good; I am in love with baked quest bars as well..safe to say I am addicted and will be pretty distressed when my stash runs out lol.
Best thing I ate yesterday was easily my baked protein cheesecake I made..after it being a disaster on Monday it tasted even better when it eventually worked out yesterday! Yumm!

  5. Nanna says:

Hahaha the Earl Grey and Fruit Loops observation cracks me up! Top 3 salad toppings are CHEESE (like you, I reckon it’s a must!), nuts, and avocado… Go fats! Mmmmm…

  6. Sloane says:

So proud of you! Its so awesome the first times that you realize you’re “just” eating, and its a huge accomplishment! Yay for you πŸ™‚
Best thing I ate yesterday was a spoonful (or 3) of coconut butter straight out of the jar. GOD I love that stuff. And salad toppings…hmm…avocado, goat cheese, and pineapple salsa. Done and done. Thanks for sharing honey, and have a great day!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my gosh, I swear coconut butter straight up is better than any fudge in the world! Have you ever tried the cacao bliss? I’m not even a huge chocolate fan, but I love that stuff!

Thank you so much, Sloane! It really felt great once I realized I’d gone all day just eating and NOT thinking! I Can’t wait to see more days like this in the future!

  7. I must say this again. Yolk Porn! Yolk Porn! Yolk Porn! And the crowd goes wild.
I love a runny egg for breakfast, but I really only eat them on weekends. I myself, displayed some minor yolk polk, a veggie platter, and a Peanut butter covered chocolate brown today, and they were also all consumed on Saturday. Now that I think about it, it’s a little freaky.
Confession: I have never had a whole foods hot salad bar, so I’ll make a deal with you. You take me to WF for salad, and I’ll make you huevos.

Salad toppings: cheese, roasted sweet potato, onions, olives, cheese, hard-boiled egg, cheese, salt and pepper.

  8. I’ve never had injera but I’ve always wanted to try Ethiopian food! I’m glad you had such a great IE day, a glimpse of what every day will be like eventually!

  9. Fran@BCDC says:

Everything looks delicious, Heather! Especially that salad. I love eggs and should eat them more often when I need dinner or a snack and just don’t know what I want. They always satisfy and taste good!! Have a great day!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, and definitely a good quick meal when you’re hungry and don’t want to wait for anything else! I think that’s why I have breakfast for dinner so much! lol

  10. YUM! This looks SO good!! And I’ve been wanting to try making injera bread, but I haven’t been able to find teff flour!! Let me know if you find it!!

Love your IE day of eats πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I heard that Bob’s Redmill makes it, but I couldn’t find any at Whole Foods. I’ll keep ya posted! πŸ™‚

  11. I love the looks of your snack plate and quest bar concoction. Yummy in my tummy! πŸ˜‰

And of course some WF salad bar love. Haven’t had a salad in months because of the raw veggies, but when I did have them, my favorite topping combo was tuna (or chicken), cucumber slices, and grapes! Amazing.

  12. I agree I love a little cheese on a salad but no tomatoes! For me they ruin a perfectly good salad! I love olives, jalapenos and some meat in my salads.

  13. Well done on the intuitive eating! That wholefoods salad looks epic I want to dive head first in to it! πŸ™‚

  14. Yay! Doing my you-know-how-awkward happy dance for you :). It’s amazing how much progress you made on your IE journey in a comparably short time. Remember how you said you wondered “where’s my pony?” after diligently plugging calories with a food tracker? Now here’s your prize: Freedom when eating. If that’s not just as good as a pony I don’t know … that’d make you one spoiled girl ;). Sure, it might still take some time until you can proclaim yourself Heather, the Intuitive Eater but how about Heather, the mostly-Intuitive Eater?! I’m proud of you in anyway.
Not fair the man-friend was called into work for hours on end. I hope Sunday made it up for him – and that you shared some of those blueberry muffins :).

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Would you BELIEVE he got called in AGAIN the next morning?! I think I saw him for like 5 hours all weekend! But he’s not on call next weekend, so I’m hoping we get to make up for it then…of course, it’ll be cut short since I go back to work on Sunday night…oh I’m soooooo excited for that! :-/

I left him with some muffins on Sunday and he texted me that night: “Muffins are good. Make more” Bahahaha!

And yes, I will more than gladly accept the title of Heather the mostly-Intuitive Eater! πŸ˜€

  15. Glad you had such a successful day! I’ve never tried Ethiopian food, but I definitely want to give it a shot sometime. I’m so intrigued by the bread (or whatever category you would put injera in)

three must have salad toppings: chunks of sweet potato, chicken, and some sort of cheese – probably feta or goat cheese. amazing.

  16. Jessie says:

Orange cream flavored yogurt.. say what!!!!!! YUM.

Mandatory salad toppings: Some sort of protein, mustard (don’t judge), and tomatoes/cucumbers/veggies (they all go together)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Girl, who you think’s judging here?! You know me…I am a mustard ADDICT!! I freaking love “hamburger salads” topped with pickles mustard and ketchup…best served warm of course! πŸ˜€

  17. I want ALL the yolk porn! I’m a going to have an obscene amount after this competition. Obscene.

Must-have salad topping: something spicy. Red pepper flakes, sriracha, cholula… all of the above…

  18. Way to go! That salad looks great! I don’t have any “must-have” toppings since it depends on my mood and the salad at hand, but I really like black olives, sunflower seeds, and some kind of bean.

  19. Love the look of that oatmeal. I have not tried eggs and oatmeal combination. But looking at that, I might have to try it. Yummm!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It’s so good…almost custard-like once it’s all stirred up together! And it’s REALLY good on savory oats too!

  20. Madi says:

WHERE do you get quest bars?? I want to try them SO badly, but I.cannot.find.them.ANYWHERE. I just have to virtually munch on them through the screen and it’s starting to make my roommates uncomfortable…. Also, your eggs are perfect πŸ˜‰

also, also, my salads always need black beans. weird, I know, but the lady knows what she likes ;)))

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Not weird at all! Actually, I had forgotten how much I like black beans until the man-friend took me out for Caribbean the other night…now I’m convinced I need to recreate them! Lol

I’ve been ordering my Quest bars online through GNC’s website. All of their boxed bars have been on 25% off discount for the last few months so you can get a whole box for like $25! Or you can get a sample box through Quest’s website! If you do that, do me a HUGE favor and go through my friend Melissa’s blog (she works with them as an affiliate so every bit helps her bloggy out!) http://www.treatswithatwist.com/ Just click on the link in her side bar! πŸ˜€

  21. Awesome work on a successful IE day! All of your eats look delish. WF salad bar = win! Must haves on salad; something crunchy, roasted veggies & something sweet to combat the savory πŸ™‚ Have a fab day!

  22. Congrats on having a perfect day! [And I am now singing “Perfect daaaaaaaaaay” from the Clueless TV show. Or was it from actual Clueless the movie? I think it was the theme from the show. Oy.]

It is a good thing I get gift cards for teaching classes at Whole Foods or else I’d never be able to afford the salad bar. It is my favorite restaurant, and my eyes usually get SUPER excited. To save money, I stuff as much as I can into the smallest box they have available. πŸ™‚

I have NEVER had Ethiopian food, but now I want to so badly. I meant to comment a bit more on the last post about that, but hearing about your wonky stomach forcing you to only eat the injera reminded me of when I went to Mexico and my stomach did NOT have the best time with the authentic Northen Mexican food, so I consumed my weight in homemade flour tortillas (also known as the best things ever and totally different from what we know of as flour tortillas in the U.S.—think much thicker, and tasting like homemade baking powder biscuits).

That was a ramble if ever there was one.

I almost had an egg on oats this morning. Still haven’t tried that…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Homemade biscuits?! Dude, I’m sold! When do we leave for our trip?! πŸ˜‰

Seriously, if you ever come to Nashville, Allie and I HAVE to take you to our favorite Ethiopian place (so much better than this one)…you will die over this stuff…and I know say that with 100% confidence since we like share the same tastebuds! Lol

I really wish I lived closer to Whole Foods…I would SO work my way “in” and get my name on that calendar of theirs! Woo hoo, hand over the “free” food!

With your love of oats AND your newfound love for eggs, this is a MUST! I swear, with sweet oats, it tastes JUST like some sort of custard! I kid you NOT!

PS, now you have me wanting to watch Clueless! Lol

  23. Top three salad toppers: hot sauce, some roasted veggies, and green onions!

Glad you had such a fantastic IE day! Way to go! I’m off to google injera. I don’t know what that is!

  24. I laughed out loud when I read about earl grey smelling like fruit loops. It’s one of my favorite tea flavors but I have never thought that before, I will be looking for the fruit loop smell/taste next time I make a cup. Toasted coconut vanilla flavor is without a doubt my favorite too!

  25. Looks like a great day of eats! Quest bars rock! My favorite thing from was my beast of a salad that I had for dinner. Three things I always have on a salad….avocado, black olives and some kind of squash or zucchini.

  26. Beaming over here. Seriously so, so happy for you. Some of the intuitive eating stuff being posted around the blog world lately has really been driving me crazy, but I could read your posts on it forever because you’re one of the few who seem to really get what intuitive eating is all about and make it seem natural rather than putting a lot of hyper-vigilance on it. Please never stop being your wonderful self <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, Amandaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Thank you so much…seriously, you just melted my heart! And I know exactly what you mean…some of the stuff I’ve seen lately has made me want to grit my teeth! I would absolutely hate for anyone to think I’m part of “that” crowd!

  27. That orange cream yogurt flavor sounds amaaazing! I LOVE creamsicle pops :).

  28. oh my goodness, the salad bar at Whole Food gets me every time. though not as bad as the first where it was a $20 salad. yes. $20. the husband has yet to stop reminding me every time we walk into WF. lol

all your eats look so good. i love how you had eggs twice in a day. I do that all the time. haha.

I think a certain bald Earl grey loving Star fleet captain may beg to differ on the tea smelling like fruit loops πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! Well…actually in space, things smell/taste completely different due to the air pressure changes and gravity. Completely true…I saw it on tv! πŸ˜‰

$20 salad?!?! Omg, you’re awesome! Lol

  29. elise says:

i know its totally none of my b-ness (great way to start a comment eh?) but i want to caution you against using the word “perfect” as it relates to eating habits. especially in your new IE experiments. food isnt good or bad, and how you eat isnt perfect or imperfect. i know what you meant by the title. i just wanted you to know that subconsciously maybe you still arent cutting yourself a break as you navigate intuitive eating. you are wonderful and perfect every day regardless of how you eat heather!!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Elise! I get where you’re coming from but when I use the word “perfect” I mean it not as in WHAT I ate, but HOW I ate it…carefree and totally intuitive…which is what I’ve been wanting to see from myself for a while now. I actually attribute it to the fact that I HAVE lessened up on myself a lot over the past couple of weeks. Before, I was giving myself pseudo-permission to eat unconditionally, but I was still harboring thoughts on “good” versus “bad”, but now? Now I can honestly say that I am FINALLY starting to see it all equally! πŸ˜€

  30. GIRL!!! Loving all the almond milk lattes! Yes, total Fruit Loop tea there.
And I feel like when we have good days, we eat the exact same thing! Haha. Remember, I basically had oats and egg for breakfast, WF salad bar for lunch, snap peas (totally left this tid bit out, but dipped in yogurt Ranch)…Yup, we should skip through a field holding hands…or just, you know, eat together. πŸ˜‰
    Love your happy day story!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Hahaha! I don’t know…I’m kinda liking the whole skipping idea! Though…I should probably run that by my physical therapist first! πŸ˜‰ She got on to me the other day when I told her I played around with some inclines on the treadmill…even though I didn’t get over like a TWO! Womp womp!

  31. This is awesome Heather – I’m so happy for you! You’ve made so much progress in these past few weeks! πŸ™‚

Your WF salad looks seriously delicious – I love salads with lots of Mediterranean toppings. But my top 3 favourite salad toppings would have to be sesame soy marinated tofu, some kind of winter squash, and toasted almonds!

  32. Okay FIRST, that yolk! Oh me, oh my, I NEED!
SECOND, I must try it over oatmeal!
THIRD, I need to find those Oikos flavors! Toasted coconut has my name all over it!
And FOURTH: my salad toppings have to include tomatoes, lemon juice, and siracha! Love me some siracha!

  33. Sarah says:

All your meals look so delicious! I MUST find that orange creme yogurt!! WOW!!! Congrats on the awesome day of IE!! That is huge!! Sometimes taking a day to just lounge and ‘be’ is the perfect way to connect with yourself! Happy Wednesday Heather!

  34. I tried that chocolate brownie Quest bar & it is GOOD!!! Baked – amazing!!!! I think as good as the famous choc chip cookie dough! πŸ™‚

  35. I am loving the multiple egg appearance here, and I swear I will try the egg and oats combo soon! There oats will definitely have to be a sweet base though, with plenty of cinnamon involved! I love days when I don’t think about my eats at all, it means I am focused on more important and amazing things. πŸ™‚

  36. Emily says:

This put the biggest smile on my face- SO proud of you, girl!
And if you figure out a good recipe for the injera, please please please share!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Will do! I think I might have to end up buying the teff flour online, but you better believe I’ll be sharing! Hey, Ethiopian party at the broccoli house! πŸ˜‰

  37. All my salads must have some sort of seeds/nuts, carrots, and a little cheese πŸ™‚

  38. Gosh, I SO wish I lived near a Whole Foods! That salad looks incredible!

  39. Taylor says:

Ooo I have wanted to try the quest bars and with pb!
For salads I always have to have avacado, onion, and rasins!

  40. HELENE says:

Omg! I have had to totally ban myself from going into a WF. I am like a person just ending a fast when I see all the goodies in there – no restraint possible. But their salad bars, hot and cold, are things to marvel! I love salads with a base of mesclun mixed with baby spinach topped with the “usual” stuff. But then I have to have a good amount of blue cheese, crumbled eggs, red onions, and kidney (or black) beans. Gosh, can’t forget the black olives and sliced red pepper (roasted even better). You can see how things can get out of hand price wise. But oooh so nummy!

I have missed a few episodes of your blog – somehow the subscription list threw me off. I am very intrigued with your journey into intuitive eating. Unfortunately, MY intuition has an “evil mind” and Lord know where it will take me. So I try to keep the sugar under control, and eat healthy. When I see your food porn you not only make me laugh, but tempted to make what you’ve pictured right away. Thank goodness it is healthy food. However the baked Quest bar with the peanut butter looks divine! Now where are my runny eggs? LOL

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Come on over, I’ll have you a plate of runny eggs ASAP! I swear, I don’t know what it is, but I’ve been completely obsessed with eggs (and cheese) lately..can’t get enough!

Gotta love a fellow blue cheese lover! I’m actually a recent convert! πŸ˜‰ And yes, I agree roasted red peppers are where it’s AT! I kinda love/hate how WF’s has a little bit of everything…everything you could ever want, but unfortunately NOT FREE! Lol

  41. What a great day of eats! Even more so that you weren’t thinking about food and eating during the day. I was just thinking about how I’ve been thinking to much about food lately. Eating it, planning it, cooking it… I’m making a conscious effort to do other things when I start to think about snacking or eating when I’m not 100% sure if I’m really hungry. Today was a better day so far because we were out of the house and busy which always helps πŸ™‚

  42. That quest bar looks too good!!

Also loving the idea of oatmeal and an egg like that.

Well done on another IE win πŸ™‚

  43. Oh my gosh!!!! I’ve said FOREVER that Earl Grey smells just like Fruit Loops! I worked at Starbucks for 3 years and everyone I ever said that too just looked at me like I was an idiot. Huuzah!!! And I’d have to say the best thing I ate yesterday, though it’s tough to decide, is probably the fish tacos and southwest slaw I had for dinner!!! I still need to find me some Quest bars to try!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Mmm, fish tacos are one of my favorites! And southwest slaw? Yum!! Did you go out to eat or did you it them yourself?

Seriously, had the man-friend not agreed with me on the Fruit Loop thing right away, I probably wouldn’t have even mentioned it thinking people would be like, “whaaaa?!” lol

  44. Allie says:

Oh my gosh, and here I’ve been wasting my leftover injera by eating it PLAIN. (Okay, okay, or sprinkling it with cinnamon + sugar–weird, but a delicious tangy-sweet combo.) Next time? Fried egg palooza! And by next time, I mean I now need to get myself to Ethiopian STAT. Like, this weekend.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Oh man, I need to try the cinnamon and sugar combo! Oh and just so you know, we went to Gojo that night…it was ok, but I think Mesob was MUCH better! πŸ˜‰

  45. I have to go make a cup of Earl Grey right now and smell it! πŸ˜‰
