The Trials & Errors of Intuitive Eating

Hey guys!

So seriously, you all are the BEST EVER! It’s taken me over THREE days to read all the comments on my “coming out” posts and I just have to say your support, empathy, and commiseration regarding my struggle with calorie counting and my commitment to intuitive eating has meant the WORLD to me!

Before typing those posts, I was SO nervous about being judged…afraid that I would be thought of as a fraud in respect to my relationship/approach to food…ashamed to admit that I had let the numbers on a nutrition label dictate so much of my life. Now I see that not only did I have nothing to worry about, but I’m not as alone as I thought I was. And it has thrilled me to NO END that so many of you are interested in hearing more about my journey in intuitive eating!

I’ve mentioned how the last few weeks have been a bit of trial and error so I thought
I’d use today to share a few pictures to explain what I mean.

And well, since I’m about to throw a whole lotta food your way…

WIAW - Trial & Error

Why not hand out a few noise makers, hang up some streamers,
and call it a party?!

Be sure to hop on over to Peas & Crayons, thank our gracious hostess, and then crash a few other foodie parties while you’re over there! 😉

So let’s get to it, shall we?

Chobani Apple

First up we have a beautiful Cho-nochromed breakfast!

I hadn’t had an apple Chobani in MONTHS…after I started getting more strict on my macros, it was hard to find “room” for a yogurt with added sugar…especially since I love to pair them with crunchy (and sweetened) cereal.

So yeah, I was set! I had my yogurt, some apple granola mixed with puffed kamut, a side of coffee…all things were a go!

WRONG!

The yogurt was sooooooooooo sweet! It literally felt like I had just popped a handful of sugar cubes in my mouth! So, I made a quick swap…

Chobani Pear

I also made a cereal switch…because for some reason I thought it was wrong to have interfruitial activities going on so early in the morning! 😉

Funny, the pear has the SAME amount of sugar, but the apple seems so much sweeter to me…and I it USED to be one of my favorite flavors!

Spaghetti Squash Lupini BeansNext up, a marinar-astic lunch!

Spinach, spaghetti squash, steamed carrots, lupini beans, jarred mushrooms, marinara and a little nutritional yeast.

It was so unbelievably salty! The only reason I was able to finish it was because I went through and fished out all the beans (and drank a crap-ton of water). I was SO excited when I found these at the Atlanta farmer’s market…they were FULL of protein, low in fat, and the sodium content was something I felt was low enough to be “worthy” of a
meal of mine.

WRONG!

After I finished my plate, I tossed the entire jar of beans in the trash!

Spaghetti Squash Mushroom Marinara Salad

A few days later, I made the same thing with a few alterations…spaghetti squash mixed with hummus and nutritional yeast topped with sautéed FRESH mushrooms and onions.

Not only did it make for a gorgeous photo, but it was absolute
foodie HEAVEN!!

Pumpkin Peanut Flour Blueberries

And last but not least a pumpkin-ified dessert dinner!

Pumpkin puree mixed with peanut flour topped with cereal, thawed blueberries, pepitas, and “healthy” chocolate sauce.

Not sure what happened here…too much pumpkin or just too much “roughage” in general, but after this bowl that was only sort of enjoyable, I had the WORST stomach pains for the rest of the night! So again, I was…

WRONG!

I thought for sure I’d have to swear off my precious pumpkin from here on out…omg, shoot me for even muttering such words! :O

Pumpkin Peanut Flour Strawberries

Luckily, a few days later, I got brave enough to try again…this time with strawberries and a cereal with  a little less “oomph” to it. 😉

And I was PERFECTLY satisfied!

I guess it just goes to show you that a nutrition label doesn’t tell all. Sometimes, no matter the number, a certain thing might just not be right for YOU and the only way to know for sure is to try. Not every meal is going to be out of this world amazing. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error (read: guessing) to figure out the flavors/combos you are truly craving, but honestly, that should only help you to appreciate those moments where you DO get it right!

What’s the last flavor/combo craving you got wrong?

What’s the last flavor/combo craving you got RIGHT?

Darnit! I hate when you’re expecting something to be freaking fabulous, and then you go to take a bit and BAM.. your hit with the unexpected…. the terrible feeling of wow this is flat out awful!

…I’m quite sad about the apple chobani. I mix mine with coconut flour & it’s delicious that way. Give a try!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I know, right? ESPECIALLY if it took you a good amount of time to put that something together AND your absolutely starving! Oy!

Hmm, good call on the coconut flour…it’s been a while since I’ve done that. I’ll have to try it again! 🙂

  2. Lucie says:

Oh I feel you!! I think I need to throw out my beloved Almond-Butter-Cocoa-Pudding since my stomach acts crazy about it. This is hard to handle. And I realized that Sunwarrior Blend made my pancakes all gooey and dry – no go. I need to stick with Perfect Fit or Oatbran! What ALWAY works is spinach with eggs! My body loves it!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah! I honestly can’t think of a time where eggs have disappointed me…oh, except for that one time when I overcooked some egg whites in the microwave and ended up with a chewy sponge for breakfast! Lol 😛

  3. I’ve never heard of lupini beans before. Interesting that you didn’t like them. Te best flavor I was craving and got it right was last night at dinner…..I added peanut flour and peanuts. Usually I only have peanut-type things in the morning or afternoon–hardly ever at dinner. It was delicious and totally hit the spot. 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Alright! And I bet it tasted even better since it’s not a normal occurrence…your body enjoyed it as a little “treat”! 😀 Peanut flour/peanuts are just too darn good to only reserve for part of the day anyway! Lol

  4. I love the idea of using pureed pumpkin. We don’t have peanut flour here but I’m thinking of trying to buy some from the US and bring it over.

Thanks for sharing your good and not so good eating experiences of late. You’ve got me inspired to not entirely try IE but try and let go a lot more about tracking every calorie and not worrying about weighing out vegetables. At the end of the day they are vegetables!

    • Jamie says:

You can order peanut flour online! iherb.com is a great website for foods like that, and they ship internationally.

Also, if you use my coupon code you can get $5 off less than $40 and $10 an order more than $40 🙂 it’s MTV123

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh Jan, that makes me SO happy to hear SEE you say that! 😉 It’s so true…they ARE just vegetables…and if you get so caught up in being exact, being perfect on every little measurement, it will for sure take over your life! In the end, it’s just not worth it…give yourself back those extra minutes and do something…enjoy life!

I usually order my peanut flour online at netrition.com. I’m pretty sure they have international shipping! If you’re interested, there is a link in my sidebar! 🙂

  5. Its definitely horrible when you make something that you think is gonna be absolutely delicious and then take a bit and realise its not what you expected at all and it pretty much all goes straight in the bin.
That happened the other day when I tried a healthy peanut butter & banana bread recipe I found online and literally couldnt wait to take it out of the oven..I took one bite and it all went straight in the bin..it was so dry and tasted disgusting!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ugh!!! It’s even WORSE when it’s a baked good or something that takes a lot of time to make! And I normally have such a hard time throwing food away…I always feel the need to “save” it (read: cover it in nut butter!) Lol

  6. katie says:

Boo that it didn’t taste good! It looked good if that counts 😉

Hope you are doing well girl!!! <3

  7. Wow. You weren’t kidding with a lot of trial and error 🙂 Kudos to you for keeping to it! Sounds like you’re figuring some things out and it will be a little more smooth sailing now 🙂 And awesome-looking meals as always!

  8. Fran@BCDC says:

So glad the intuitive eating seems to be working for you, Heather. I need to read up on this to see if I can work this out. I sometimes I think that I “think” my food out too much. Have a great day!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah…sometimes just giving yourself a minute to NOT think before a meal can really help you to hone in on a true craving instead of eating something because you THINK it’s what your body needs!

  9. I have never heard of a lupini bean before. I think its funny that the one yogurt tasted wrong and the other tasted just fine, it must be more of the flavors than just the amount of sugar. I love pumpkin mixed in with yogurt and topped with strawberries and granola, so im sure it would be good without the granola too!

  10. I’m loving these posts, Heather!!! And I’m so happy for you on this journey! I’m on a similar one myself, and I have to keep stopping myself from mentally adding up the days calories. It’s hard, but so worth it!

  11. I don’t know when I started liking plain greek yogurt more, but after I did, I find flavoured yogurts too sweet as well! And I have a mega sweet tooth hahaha.

I hope you’re doing fine hun! I just got back from Melbourne visiting my brother yesterday, and today he called to tell me he missed my (your*) pancakes so much! I made them for him almost everyday 😉

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, Shreya!! You just made me smile SO BIG!! I’m so glad he liked OUR pancakes! Lol 😀

I started eating/liking plain yogurt more about a year ago…I actually normally prefer to add my own “sugars” in the form of jams or fruits and stuff, but I when I saw the apple on sale at the store, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my flavored yogurt days! Guess I ended up just putting it on a pedestal though.

  12. Both breakfasts and both pumpkin bowls look delicious to me!

  13. Love the look of all the food but I’m sorry it didn’t taste good or the combination is odd. Same here, I like to do trial and error and see what works for me and my belly. 🙂

I like peach, mango granola and PB2 all together! 🙂 Try it sometime. 🙂

  14. If you don’t like the apple cinnamon Chobani…does that mean more for me? :-p It’s my favourite!

  15. I’m glad the blogging world shares the same obsession with pumpkin as me! Just topped my breakfast bowl with a generous sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice and peanut butter of course. There must be a pumpkin pie spiced PB out there somewhere other than my dreams….I enjoy reading about your journey with intuitive eating. I am an avid calorie counter but I feel like I eat MORE when I count since I am scared of going over my “limit” when I don’t count. You are some inspiration to give it a try though! : )

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, tooooooootally obsessed! I’ve got orange palms to prove my pumpkin love! Lol

I’m so glad you’re taking a bit from my IE posts…I really just want to share as much about my journey as possible…and not sugar coat anything. Because yes, it’s a whole new life on the other side, but it’s one that you have to work for if you actually want it…especially if, like me, you’re thoughts have been skewed for so long when it comes to food/nutrition. I think it’s best to take baby steps in the beginning and always ALWAYS remember that it is a learning process! 🙂

  16. Mmmm still looks like you had some good eats in there anyways! 🙂 I HATE it when I screw stuff up! I made a really bad peppermint Iced Coffee a while back – too much peppermint! Buuuuut one of my current favourite snacks is mixing Plain greek yogurt with coconut flour, a little coconut extract and lime juice – it tastes like a tropical vacation in your mouth!:)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah! It is SO easy to overdo it with the peppermint! I’ve definitely been there before!

That combo sounds great! Like a key lime coconut pie! Mmmm!

  17. So glad you are learning what works for you and more important, makes you FEEL good!

  18. Honestly? I’m – not only in this post but generally – impressed by how well you can feel your cravings and come up with whichever complex combinations are needed to satisfy many of them at one swoop. Personally, I hardly ever come up with creations like that chocolate-peanut-sauce/pretzel/apple bowl you had recently – yes, I’m still thinking about it ;).
Over the years of having an ED I’ve lost touch with feeling what I really want to eat at any given moment. So I often go with what I know hardly getting creative and as of recently often ending up unsatisfied. Writing this out makes it sound ridiculous so I hope you can sense what I mean …
One of the last – likey strange-sounding – cravings I got right was my usual banana-coconut flour Greek yogurt (sweet) bowl throwing in some random chickpea (salty/creamy texture), drizzling almond butter on top (always good) and adding popped amaranth (crunchy). Certainly odd but it hit the spot :D.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I totally get what you mean…it’s so easy to lose sight/sense of what our bodies actually want after so long of thinking we “knew better”…and getting that trust back is hard…especially when you have to go through some trial and error to find it. But rest assured that it does all come with time…just start small, take note of flavors that you REALLY enjoy and that seem to “pop” out at you when you include them in your meals. And don’t be so hard on yourself…hey, that chickpea combo sounds pretty damn genius if you ask me! Now how about throwing on some chocolate sauce? 😉

  19. Nik says:

so glad to see you eating intuitevely! I’ve also struggled and am just now getting comfortable! Just curious, it seems you’re avoiding fatsb though? Not Assuming I promise, just want to make sure because when I first ditched calorie counting I became stricter with higher fat and sugar foods thinking I was free just because I wasn’t literally counting numbers! Now I eat much higher fats and feel better listening to my body (and nutritionist!) Did you know wmen eat about 600 calories less than they used to, but are 33% bigger? Crazy stuff! Also…I love you and think you are HILARIOUS 🙂 Good luck in your journey!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you SO much Nik!! You’ve seriously got me grinning ear to ear right now! 😀

And actually, you’re right on noticing less fat in my meals…thank you for the concern…but that is due to the fact that over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed that my body doesn’t really respond to healthy fats like most everyone else. I used to be obsessed with making sure I had a good balance of calories/protein/fat in each of my meals (carbs for some reason never seemed to really worry me), but I realized after some “trial and error” that I actually respond more (feel more fulfilled) with a higher protein meal versus one higher in fat. I’m definitely making sure to get some fats in, but they aren’t really the focus of my meal…that marinara sauce was basically tomato sauce and olive oil, I’m still loving me some nut butter, and I’ve actually just started to notice that cheese seems to satisfy really well so I’ve been experimenting with that lately. Slowly but surely, I’m getting there! 🙂

  20. I’ve been finding surprising good combos with sauerkraut lately, my favorite was with roasted sweet potato. I need to catch up on your post, but good for you for making the switch to intuitive eating. It’s been a gradual process for me… I did the calorie counting in college (12 years ago!) and would still occasionally catch myself tallying up numbers at the end of the day… but it’s finally mostly behind me, and I really love not worrying about it.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my dear precious sauerkraut! Is there nothing you don’t make better? I’ve been loving it with eggs lately…or straight from the jar! Lol I will DEFINITELY have to try the sweet potato/kraut combo…mmm, maybe with a little sweet and spicy mustard!

  21. I haven’t branched out too much on the flavors, so nothing wrong lately, but I mixed zucchini with parmesana and fresh mint, which I thought was weird, but so delicious!

  22. Taylor says:

I have had the same experience with chobani.. I sometimes feel as though they are a little too sweet

  23. Those lupine beans are much better if you rinse them. I rinsed the write jar and the. Re-jarred them with plain water to make them edible.

I completely know how you feel. Once you are used to eating a lower sugar and sodium diet, packaged or restaurant foods are wayyyy over-flavored.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I DID rinse them! That’s the reason I was so disappointed with them and ended up tossing them! Boo! 🙁

  24. Sloane says:

You’re amazing! I’m so happy you opened up about your calorie counting stuff and your journey to intuitive eating! You’re such an inspiration, and I’m so glad you’ve received some awesome support–don’t you just LOVE the bloggy world?

I’m with you on the apple cinnamon–it used to be one of my favorites, but I started just eating plain CHO for a while, and when I tried to go back to apple this week I couldn’t finish it. It hurt my teeth because it was so sweet.

All eats look FAB. thanks for sharing, and keep up your journey!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh my gosh, YES!!!! Thank you so much Sloane! It really means the WORLD to me to have so much support through all of this…because it has NOT been easy, that’s for sure! And I’m just happy to be able to help others in any way that I can! 😀

  25. I am doing much better at eating what I actually WANT instead of just eating what fits my calories and macros and all that crap. I am also getting better at honouring my hunger, no matter what time of day it is. Calorie counts still have a bit of a grip on me, but I am slowly easing away from them. It is hard!! So good job for ditching it completely 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It IS hard, especially when you’ve been focussing on them for so long, but GOOD FOR YOU for getting in touch with your body’s cues…that is the FIRST step (and the hardest, in my opinion) to getting to a point where you have a healthy relationship with food!

  26. Heather, I’m so happy for you, congrats on coming out and being honest I support you 100%…and don’t even get me started on your eats – YUM. So colorful, your recipes always inspire me. (The cook behind them as well) Way to go!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, Jess!! Thank you SO MUCH!!! You seriously just MADE MY DAY!!!! <- is that enough exclamation marks to get my point across? Here, have some more... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😉 xoxoxox

  27. It kind of makes me sad to hear that you didn’t like the apple Cho. I’ve been wanting to try it forever now, but we don’t get it up here in Canada and all of my searches while I was down in the States proved to be unsuccessful. Boo-urns.

Anywho, I’m loving this post because I think it’s SO important for people to realize that going back to intuitive eating results in a LOT of error. I know I already mentioned this to you, but a lot of people get turned off from IE when they keep making mistakes because they believe it’s not for them, but what they don’t realize is that it’s a harsh learning process that takes a lot of time, persistence, and patience. What you’re doing is amazing, lady, and I love ya <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“it’s a harsh learning process that takes a lot of time, persistence, and patience” <- SO true!! That's why I'm trying to do my best and share the steps I'm taking in my journey so far...so that people can see that it's NOT easy...it takes work...but hey, that just means it's worth it, right? 😀 And actually, before I stopped eating the flavored yogurts, the apple was one of my favorites. Don't be discouraged...especially with your love of applesauce...I think you'd love it! Wish I could send you some! xoxo

  28. Omg babe, I can’t get over your creativity! LOVE what you do with the WIAW buttons! HA! WAY too cute my love! WAY TOO FREAKING CUTE 🙂

What did I tell you that first day you published the IE/calorie counting post? 😉 You’d be BLOWN away from all of the support!

I’m happy you’ve finally gotten through all of the comments 😀 I still have sooooo many to read! YIKES! I’ve felt far far farrrrrrrr behind this week, but I really needed to take the time to focus on ME. So I did 🙂

Loved seeing all of your eats at the rights/wrongs 🙂 Good for you for reeeeeally listening to those cravings girl!!! SO PROUD OF YOU 🙂 Soon enough, IE won’t be so thoughtful 🙂 – I’m posting about THAT topic tomorrow! SO EXCITED!

I haven’t tried any of the chobani yogurts before 🙁 I WOULD LOVE TO THOUGH! Seriously so proud of you for letting go of that “too much sugar” thought! I am eating so much Greek yogurt now and before I wouldn’t allow it. Same with fruit! Silly silly me!

Love you to pieces! LOVE LOVE LOVE

    • kissmybroccoli says:

You were SO right!! Totally blown away!!

I totally feel you on the “me time” thing…that’s the whole reason I decided to unplug this weekend…yes, I may be frighteningly behind in my comment responding/blog reading, but in the end, what does it all matter if I’m only living life through a computer screen? Ya know? Gotta get out there and LIVE! I spent hours yesterday just laying in the front yard with the man-friend and his pooch…doing absolutely nothing…and it was fantastic!!

You are DEFINITELY in for a treat next month at Blend! If it’s anything like last year, you’ll have all the Chobani you’re little heart could want!! 😀

Love you to the MOOOOOOON!! And now I have to go check out your post! 🙂

  29. Kendra says:

I know I haven’t been commenting on your last few posts, but I just wanted to say that I am SO impressed by your honesty, and I can completely related to many of the troubles you had in regards to over-thinking/needing to control what you ate. I am a HUGE over-thinker as well! It doesn’t surprise me that you got so much support in response to your posts–you definitely deserved it:) I wish you the best of luck with your intuitive eating “experiment,” and I hope it helps you feel better both mentally and physically!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, Kendra!!! Thank you SO much!! That really means a lot to me! Just trying my best to take one day at a time and remember that it took YEARS for my thoughts on nutrition/food to become skewed so it’s not going to fix itself overnight!

I hope you are doing well!

  30. Peanut Butter + Vegemite — always!! 🙂

  31. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. It looks like you’ve got that concept down, and good for you for keeping go back at it. I was shocked to see you eating pepitas on your salad bowl. I thought you two weren’t friends. Maybe you’ve made up now? Or maybe they were the reason for the rumbling tummy? In any event, keep after it. You are doing fab so rock on with your bad self.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha, baby steps…baby steps indeed! I’m still too apprehensive to try making your glorious pumpkin cranberry crunch…that stuff didn’t last a DAY when you sent it to me! :-/ Honestly, with this bowl, I think it was just too much fiber (tmi?)…without actually adding it up, I’m thinking the pumpkin, the cocoa (didn’t even realize it had fiber until I looked), AND the high fiber cereal was a bit of overkill. Of course, my stomach seems to be more sensitive in that way too. Eh, trial AND error!

  32. trials and tribulations are the best. you are knockin this IE thing outta the park 🙂 isn’t marinara the best? i put that on everything!

  33. I try really hard to like flavored Chobani, but usually I’m with you – they’re too sweet! Plain all the way for me. 🙂

  34. Even if you got some meals wrong, it’s still good that you’re learning more about your cravings and eating intuitively!

The last craving I got wrong was this chili lime chicken and veggies with coconut bulgur that I’m eating for dinner… it’s not really satisfying my cravings. But oh well, live and learn. The last craving I got right was overnight oats for breakfast yesterday. I haven’t had them in a while and I forgot how good they are!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, sounds like such a good combo! Sorry it wasn’t as satisfying as you’d hoped!

Yay for OO’s! I just made some the other day too after a bit of a hiatus…how could we forget how good they are?! Lol

  35. purelytwins says:

we love your flavor combos, we pretty much love anything together 🙂 well almost

  36. Sounds like you’re totally rocking intuitive eating! I’m a fellow over-thinker, so I know exactly what you’re going through!

  37. I’m so glad you are posting these girl! I def have to eat by trial and error. I sure do hate when I get it wrong! lol I hate it about those beans girl! Bummer!

  38. Yes! I think I got it WRONG last night when I attacked my bowl of Greek yogurt with chocolate peanut butter sauce, Nuttzo, almonds, granola, coconut, and cacao nibs…sounds amazing…left me SO full that I went to bed in tears. EEK!!
    LOVE you!!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yep, I don’t care what they say, there IS a such thing as too much of a good thing! Gotta hate it when those errors are painful…sending you lots and lots and lots of love…even though I’m texting you now and you know that! Lol

  39. Props to you for changing what your weren’t quite feeling in your meals! I often times will get up in the middle of a meal a reformulate it to my liking, haha.

  40. Everything in life is a learning process from food to working to family to friends to life.. it is great that you are searching what is best for you! I guaranty you that it will happen multiple times thru life says this old broad! 😉

  41. Love this post! We are both on the same track 🙂 I’m definitely going to try this- I love how you just ate what you craved. Happy WIAW Heather!

  42. Jacelyn says:

The dreaded trial and error lol! I sometimes keep myself from experimenting just because I am afraid it isn’t going to please my “craving” and just end up being a waste. I’ve got to put an end to that. Ive forgotten experimenting is half the fun! I sure do hope you will keep sharing your adventures in intuitive eating! Ive just started my journey and I feel so free! (and anxious) I love knowing I have a comrade with just a click of the mouse! 🙂

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“experimenting is half the fun” <- SO TRUE!! And you never know, you might stumble upon some life-changing flavor combo that you never knew you'd love...kinda like my BBQ PB&J! Hahaha! I will most DEFINITELY be sharing more! I'm glad to "hear" that you're enjoying the posts so far! It's not been an easy journey, that's for sure, and I'm still learning each and every day, but I've been too excited over all of my self-discoveries to keep them all to myself! 🙂

  43. So happy you are intuitively eating and understand your bodies needs! It can be difficult in the sugar/caffeinated world we live in but you are doing an awesome job! Great eats btw! Have an amazing week 🙂 Love + Shine CourtStar

  44. This morning I wanted creamy and carby…brown rice + bulgur ‘pudding’ it was! However, I neglected to factor in the appropriate ‘crunch,’ and although the papaya and kabocha was a strange but DELICIOUS combination, I should have gone with the apples I originally wanted.

FAIL on the accidental stevia overdose in my coffee. WAY too sweet…
